Welcome to M, I, T technology review narrated. My name is matt honan. I'm our editor in chief.

Every week, we will bring you a fascinating new in depth story for the leading edge of science and technology, covering topics like A I, biotech, climate, energy, robotics and more. Here's this week story. I hope you enjoy .

IT narrow by noa. Listen to more of the best articles from the world's biggest publishers from the a APP or a news over audio dot com. Adam for peto.

right? Gillis, malicious and bitcoin. Why congo's most famous national park is betting big on the A K forty seven is heavy with extra clips strap together, jungle style. But the man holding IT doesn't flinch as he strolls the heavily forested mountain here in eastern congo.

Whether soviet throwback weapon costs just forty dollars on the black market, militias use its dowa or magic to take land, timber, ivory and the rare mineral set of long bean, this region's promise and its curse. But this man in fatigue is not militia. He's a rare authority figure in a largely law lest region arranger who usually patrols vun gut national park, a place famous for endanger mountain gorillas.

Today, though, his job is different in the very a hamlet just outside the park, he is guarding the world's first known bitcoin mine Operated by a national park, one that runs on clean energy. It's a gamble. It's energize to many who work in and around the park and invited the scepticism from experts who wonder what crypto e has to do with conservation.

On this mugging day in late march two thousand and twenty two, the guard is passing in front of ten shipping containers that are filled with thousands of powerful computers they harm in the midday heat. Suddenly, something shiny flashes over the horizon. He adjust his barry and hustles to secure a nearby dirt runway.

As assessing er circles, the plain soon touches down on a parallel ly steep and short landing strip, an outstep. Its pilot, a manuel M. A road, the fifty two year old director of the park here for a routine inspection.

The monroe grabs the leather strap of his bag with one hand. The other salutes the rangers who puff out their chests and stand, stick straight in the sun, clean, shavin and lightly. Greg, he's the only person in sight without a weapon behind him.

The wings of the section, a pop marked with bullet holes and patched with duck tape. The road strides passed a barking bush dog and into one of the containers, forty feet long and chrome Green inside, surrounded by wiring, laptops and body OTA, a team of technicians in messiest monitors the mind all day. These machines grind away at complex math problems and rewarded with a digital currency that's worth thousands of dollars.

The powered by the massive hydro electric power station perched on the same mountain, making these containers the catheter of twenty first century Green tech, surrounded by Greener rain forest. In many ways, these Operations, mere existence, defines the odds just being in a volatile region known for corruption and rising deforest location where foreign investment is as rare as electrical grids and stable government poses a host of problems, problems of internet connection, climate conditions, which influence production, working in isolation. Lij 2, a graduate to the nearby university of goa who stops the mine.

There's also the threats from dozens of nearby rebel groups. Violence is frequent here in years of militia activity, missile strikes and a shati attacks have left deep trauma. This is a pivotal moment for africa's oldest protected park.

After four years of disease outbreaks, pm down and ludship, the longer badly needs money and the region badly needs opportunities. The congress governments provides around just one percent to the parks Operating budget, leaving IT to largely fend for itself. That's why longer is batting big on cyp to currency.

Bit going, though, isn't usually associated with conservation or community development. It's often known for the opposite. But here is part of a larger plan to turn the lungers coveted natural resources from land to hydro pa into benefits for both the park and locals.

While Operations like this may be unconventional, they're profitable and the Green proceeds from the sailor bitcoin already helping to pay for park salaries as well as its infrastructure projects like roads and water pumping stations. Elsewhere, power from other park hydro plants supports modest business development. This is how you build a sustainable economy tied to park resources.

The road says, even though the mine itself is something of a happy accident, we built the power plant and figured we build the network gradually, he explains. Then we had to shut down tourism in two thousand and eight because of kidnappings by rebels. Then in two thousand and nineteen, we had to shut down tourism because of ebola in two thousand and twenty.

The rest is history with code for four years, all about tourism revenue. IT used to be forty percent of park revenue. IT collapsed, he adds.

It's not something we expected, but we had to work out a solution, otherwise we would have gone fast as a national park. The park started mining in september of two thousand and twenty as most of the world was locked down. And then the Price, a bit going, went through the roof, he says.

We were lucky for once during this visit in late march two thousand, and to the congolese miners chat with the director in french about their progress. Bitcoin is trading at around forty four thousand dollars, and the meroe predicts revenues about one hundred and fifty thousand dollars a month, close to what tourism provided at its peak. The looming ing question now is whether their luck has run out nearly a decade ago, a longer rose to fame.

Thanks to a celebrated netflix film that showed the park rapping with a rebel invasion and the threat of big oil. These dangers have returned, jeopardizing everything. Congos government has recently announced plans to auction.

Oil lies in and around the park. It's early stages, but if drilling happens, IT would mean disrupting lives and key wildlife habitat. It's also no stretch to say the health of the planet would be at risk.

The congo basin is the world's second largest drain forest after the amazon and a crucial carbon sink. Meanwhile, a militia called to the m23 is occupying the parks gilla sector and sacking towns as IT battles congos military。 In the past, the m twenty three avoided direct confrontation with the longer, but since the later part of two thousand and twenty two, that seems to have changed.

On top of all that, the collapse of F T X in november two thousand and twenty two in the subsequent earthquake that dropped the entire crypto to industry means demo ade gamble may sound like quite the hale mary, but every day of mining is pure profit, he points out. So no matter how much bitcoin fluctuates in value, as long as it's positive, it's profitable. In the face of these threats, demo d believes the bitcoin mine can still be their race, neither ultra nor cyp to graft.

He's a magmatic st willing to risk everything. If the park can hold on, IT may just work. One of the first things you notice in this slice of the democratic republic of congo is how Green IT is.

Oceans of Emerald fed by heavy rainfall and rich volcanic soil. Ba borders the congo basin on one flank, and uganda and randa on the other is three thousand square miles, are home to half of africa's terrestris animals, including around a third of the world's last mountain gorillas. Around five million people live just outside the park.

Most lack electricity to cook, light or heat their mud blasted homes. On top of that, eighty thousand people live in the park. Many settled here before the longest creation in one thousand and twenty five, while the country was under belgian colonial rule. Others are refugees fleeing more recent violence.

That's why the park is a vital source for charcoal or a and for food, even though farming, fishing, hunting and logging or all illegal park resources are strips with regularity between two thousand and one and two thousand and twenty, bongo lost almost ten percent of its three cover. And the marrow estimates one hundred and seventy million dollars in vongole trees and ivery a lost. But the alternative for locals is being unable to pay local warlords or starving.

These are perfect conditions for corruption. Congo is a weltering place to make moral judgments, says adam, a hook shield, the author of king lee appalls ghost, which clicks the belgian monks hring sixth century rule. Congo is further complicated by its sheer of widness people who speak hundreds of languages, and the colonization which was done for the purpose of extracting wealth.

He says, under those circumstances, it's very hard to have a just and fair society. Congo has nearly as many to spaced people as ukraine and decades of conflict, despite decades of U. N.

peacekeeping. Most stolen profits from the park go to armed rebel groups, which some locals join for lack of Better options. Some a relic of past wars, most notably randal's nineteen ninety four genocide, others may be linked to the issa mic state.

The largest is the end of t three a two c LED group so well armed that the U. N. Says rWanda baxi randa denies this, but its economy relies heavily on congress resources.

As a result, brunger maybe the only UNO site that regularly bears its staff, over two hundred rangers have been killed since ninety ninety six, on average one a month. Sherry bin mulia in beijing, who has spent eight years as a ranger, calls IT the most dangerous job in the world. Rangers, nearly eight hundred rangers, including about thirty five women, often encounter armed rebels in the park and civilians farming or living there illegally.

Many locals don't even know the parks. Bandari at samsung regular, an activist in the nearby town of root shoe. While conservation requires community involvement to solve issues, he says we are in areas which are not secure.

That means maybe rangers can't be in dialogue. The marrow is sympatheti C2Community com plaints tha t ind ividuals are bei ng den ied acc ess to the par k's vas t wea lth. Hundreds of thousands, probably millions of people, suffer what we hope is a short term cost to turn this park into a positive acid.

If we failed in that we do more harm and good, he says. But we believe passionately that IT can be turned around this ecosystem, this park. His plans to do that hinges on the three hydro plants.

The park has opened since two thousand and thirteen in my T, V mode. Wanda and level a fort is under construction. If you can pile your home, the theory goes, you don't need to chop trees to cook electricity.

Supports new jobs and businesses like coffee cups and share c production. And of course, the bit coin mine, that's the misconception we most want to correct, that the longer is just about the wildlife. The merode continues.

No, it's about the community through the wildlife. Our role is to try to facilitate that. There's no way to practice conservation in one of the world's most troubled countries without local support, he says. The lavo station, like all of a ungers hydro plant, uses a river run design, meaning that power is generated by the rivers constant flow rather than dance and reservoir, which has a low environmental impact. But its construction was daunting.

From the start, IT required workers to first chop off a mountain top to build an airstrip, then carve roads in the rock with basic handles, sometimes while under attack by rebels, then part way through construction. One of the park's biggest benefactors have a buffet sun of Warren buffet, and IT is donations over a disagreement with the morale about how funds were being spent. Buffet, who co funded other part projects, calls the marrow an amazing guy, but says funds intended for power plants were used to build a network to deliver that power to the provincial capital of goa.

Ad, they're basically right, admits to morrow, who insists nothing was most appropriated and later hustled to occur. Seventy million dollars in grand loans from me. E, U, in the U.

K, to try to finish the zero. When you build an energy project, there's a power plant, but also the network around IT. If you can't deliver the electricity to the community, he doesn't have much purpose.

We made a mistake in good faith. Still, these goals were all a bit more complicated. In remote libero, there were fewer potential customers in the nearby community than they were for the hydro plants in the tb and rona.

The idea was to build the network of power and buyers gradually, but in the meantime, the plant would be creating excess power. And the question was how to find something productive and profitable to do with IT. At the same time, there was yet another problem. By two thousand and nineteen, the liberal plant was incomplete in the park, still didn't have enough cash to finish construction, and then turn the plant on.

Finally, the merode and his colleagues landed on an idea they thought could solve all these issues in one go, buying two hundred thousand dollars in bitcoin riggs, which could potentially earn short and long term profit s and provide a verbal way to use the hydro power over a few weeks. The monroe says, IT don't on us that this was an extraordinary solution. That solution presented itself nearly four thousand miles on a world away from varona, but an imposing french council in the lava valley in family of two thousand and twenty.

The cypher investor sebastian s. Arrived the shadow around midday, expecting a pitch from some show off. It's very common to enter shadow in frogs.

IT costs about the same as a hotel, he explains. Instead, he was greeted at the door by a princess whose family he downed the castle since eighteen century. Minutes later, he went to fetch husban's lunch date fees manual.

The moral Rogers parked director was born into esir to belt an ability at just eleven years old. He spent time with a legended line, grew George Adamson in kenya. Later, he trained as an nan, throws logic, and he came to congo in nineteen ninety three to help gAmber national park rangers and to study the bush me trade for P.

H. D. In nineteen ninety nine, he left for the bones lopa national park, where he worked to habituate gillis and build ecotourism.

That's where he realized you have to be there for twenty to thirty years to really succeed. And I wanted to be in eastern congo. The marae derived in rona.

In two thousand and one, a civil war raged. He quit, recognized the importance of the work. The arrangers, who often went on, paid together with a famous fossil hunter, Richard leakey, would later become his father in law.

He started fund raising to support their sales. He became director of the park in two thousand and eight after a group of gillers were killed, and photos of their execution style murders caused international outrage. In the chaotic aftermath, bonus and director was arrested, and the state officials vow radical change.

There may not be anything more radical. In a belgian prince taking a leadership position in a former belgian colony, the marrow made his mark immediately. Two months into the job, rebels stormed park headquarters in roman garble, and he crossed enemy lines to negotiate and protect staff.

After a gaining control, he fired hundreds of rangers and arrested senior offices. And then we recruit rangers and retrain them. Salary is rose.

Russians and gear improved morale. Sod and animal populations eventually rebounded. But in April two thousand and fourteen, the story almost ended. The marrow had gone to go a to deliver evidence against the british oil company accused to bribe officials. He was driving alone back to the park when gunmen opened fire on his landrover.

He returned fire, sprinted to the forest and head, but the bullet hit IT, his chest breaking five ribs and perforating along another ripped into his stomach through the liver, die frm long and out the back, he says. Eventually, farmers on motorbikes pulled over to help. When he finally made IT to go out, he had to translate between indian and congress SE doctors who liked to common tongue with no x ray machine.

The doctors cut him right down the middle. Two days later, while I was still recovering, a unger premier at the try back a film festival. The documentary later required by netflix, focused on the parks fight to survive a siege by the end two thousand three in soccer, executive produced by the other, the cap ro IT, was nominated for academy award.

IT also turned the morale and his colleagues into international heroes. That's how husban saw the road in that first meeting, shattered this along. The two men wound up talking for four hours.

The morale was in a tight spot. You good to figure out how to use the hong's excess electricity to fund the park, which was quickly losing money. And gusmao was eager to do something that matter on the train home.

I google and saw he's a hero, says this beyond I wanted to help. We used to do mining by buying electricity. IT wasn't efficient.

The money may be goes to oligos in cash. Stan in varuna, we see its saving the park. Husban, who got into crypto after working in real estate investment, likes to call himself the bitcoin inDiana Jones.

Despite making a whip of a daughter, he prefers genes and his bold. He has an adventurous reputation. His company, big block Green services, is known to putting together controversial projects, advising l sov, a door on its bitcoin city, and prepping another crypto project in the central african republic with goose BIOS help.

In early two thousand and twenty, the unger bought second hand service and got to building a bitcoin mind. As with a hydrogen ant, construction was audience getting shipping containers and bitcoin riggs from gma meant two days driving along dirt roads through rebel held jungles. The italian ambassage was killed on the road we take every day, says, guys bio.

When he arrived in the zero, he found bullet let holes in his bungalow. Demo hadn't told him about. I didn't tell my wife either, whose bio equips.

Around this time, the park's body count was rising sharply. Twelve rangers, a driver and four civilians were killed in a two thousand and twenty in the worst attack in vanguard history. Another range IT was killed in october.

Six more in january, two thousand and twenty one, another in october and another in november two thousand and twenty one. The moral describes IT as our hardest year ever yet against these odds. By september of two thousand and twenty, the vero mine guan Operation a local job posting LED to the hire of nine congolese crypto miners who scored well on the question ae competition.

Most of them had heard a bit coin before, but their initial impressions weren't always positive, owing to scams Operating in the area. Now many of them have critter wallet. The field is totally new, says earnest ka, a twenty seven year old electrical engineering graduates from the university of goa who works at the mine.

IT took me A A little time to adapt to the jargon to understand the Operation of a mining machine, and managed to repair and maintain IT. Yes, but I was twisted as a member of the team and not as a simple worker. That responsibility gave me confidence.

The miners work twenty one days straight before getting five days off. The digs aren't classy, says ka, but we'd like what we do, he adds. It's not like in town. Everything must be planned, but it's worth IT.

It's such an honor to work here as many as thirty now a day, sometimes more, because we have nothing else to do in the jungle today, there are ten containers powered directly by the plants for me to turbines. Each container holds two hundred and fifty to five hundred. Riggs bunger owns three containers, with all the proceeds going to fund various park services.

The other seven, the goose mills. He pays vongo for the electricity to run his service, and whatever minds belongs to him and his investors, the male estimates that the mine generated about five hundred thousand dollars for the park in two thousand and twenty two, when the pandemic could shut down most other revenue sources. And catching IT on the popularity of digital apes, park teamed up with the N F T project cyberknife, which auctioned gilla nf through Christies, providing another one point two million dollars for the park.

Some of that money was used to buy two of the three parkland container. That's what got her through code, the monod says a mania was very surprised when he saw the money. I was sure about our success, says gusmao, who speaks rapid fire when the conversation turns to the sustainability of critter.

Not everyone is so sure, and not all congolese are fans of radical development. Even if some do benefit, most won't get jobs. Years of war and foreign exportation also weigh heavily on locals who often praised the park and cut IT in the same sentence.

Meanwhile, for the international community, the idea of a bit coin savior has perhaps never been a hard to sell. That criticism is heavily tied to the enormous amount of electricity required to mine coins, electricity typically generated from fossil fuels that directed general of the european central bank recently called bitcoin mining. And unprecedented pollute and connections are often costly.

The seven biggest U. S. Crypto miners for incident tap the same amount of power as all the households in houston.

U. S. Crypto companies are not legally required to report carbon dioxide emissions. Many communities, particularly in developing countries, have also been exploded by international cyp to miners, some of whom sweep in today advantage of weak local regulations or tax benefits, siphon power, damage the surrounding environment, and then disappear for the next hot spot.

The main issue is that the benefit is always extremely limited compared to the cost, says alex degrees, A P H D candidate, a va university time to amsterdam, who studies cyp to sustainability, miners over promise and other deliver. A key, he says, is that recouping investments means running gigs. Twenty four local communities are typically Better off without them, he concludes.

Peter housing, and assistant professor in international development authority university, who was conducted research with the freeze, also argues that congos clean energy could be used more effectively. Bitcoin miners are are competing more productive forms of Green industrial development in the c. He says those industries could have employed combattants, poachers and illegal loggers.

Even the largest biton outfits employ only a handful of people, and those are very precarious jobs with insecure contracts. So is this a good model? No, they should use the hydro path for something useful.

S. M. Ryan, a dutch political ecologist who was worked in congo since two thousand and thirteen, makes a similar point guying. The man is simply conservation and questioning what a gilla sancy has to do with cyp top for all the developments taking place in longa, especially around hydro park, he notes that the park is failed to bring widest stability or employment.

What is the objective, SHE asks, is IT rural electrification so people around the park can actually use electricity to improve their relationship to the park, or is IT to attract business? Jason stones, the founder of n. Yu congo research group and a former U.

N. Investigator who considers the marrow a friend, warns that malicious too can benefit from hydro power, so we'll not necessarily lead militants to drop their guns. I admire manual tenacity in wilderness to think outside the box, he says.

But this ideology that the free market will bring a peace lies in the face at the last twenty years in the congo. Nevertheless, gusmao maintains the bitcoin mining can be a force for development. In fact, he is the project in for longer as a potential model.

People say it's bad for the environment, but here it's clean energy. It's a formula that could be replicated. There are no fossil fuels here, since the mine relies on rivers. And the lack of customers in the zero means no power is being safe.

Ed from local needs, Michael sailor, the cofounder of the investment firm microstrip gy, agrees, calling the ingas model the ideal high tech industry to put in a nation that has plenty of clean energy but is unable to export a product to produce service with that energy. To this end, the marrow is speaking to other state national parks about turning their waterways into hydro power supplies. Peter war, the CEO of argo box chain, which runs hydro powered minds in quebec.

Note that eighty five percent of our minds Operating cost comes from power, meaning even a low power mine can be profitable. I think the wronger mine is the first. He says, i've not heard of any national parks.

Mining, ultimately, you need three things, power machines, capital a longer has all three still all critter minds, including those in the zero need to grapple with the currencies cratering Price bitcoin alone has fAllen over seventy percent since its height in two thousand and twenty two. And then there's the F T X tobacco, which wiped out thirty two billion dollars overnight. All this blast crypto s track record of pollution may turn off the crucial donors that places like vronde rely on, but it's still an incredibly good investment for the park.

The monroe says. We're not speculating on its value. We were generating IT. If you buy a bitcoin and IT decreases, you lose money.

We're making bitcoin out of surplus energy and moitie ing something that othe wise has no value. That's a big difference. Even if bitcoin dropped to one percent of its value, the ten containers would remain profitable.

He says it's a system demo hopes can essentially sustain itself, which is one reason the park is building so much infrastructure. When I ask what would happen to the mind if something would happen to him, you keep smiling if I crashed. The digital wallet is managed by our finance team. He replies, it's unlikely we sit on bitcoin for more than a few weeks anyway because we need the money around the park. So if something happened to me or A C fo lost the password, we'd given a hard time, but wouldn't cost as much.

Crypto demo emphasizes, isn't the solar answer d to save the unger, but part of a larger eco business, the annual GDP impact of the ringg's other agrees investments, which include coffee and chocolate conservation, could be as much as two hundred and two million dollars by two thousand and and two ty five, according to a two thousand and nineteen report by the british economic consultancy cambridge econometrics. What we're trying to demonstrate is that the Green economy implies diversity. The malade says hundreds of different industries can be reliant on sustainable energy over the long term, which makes a healthy society unlike being reliant on just oil.

About one hundred miles south of the zero from the top of the mtv hydro plants to, you can see the plan in action, with power lines sneaking into the town of shou. It's no matter polis, but in many ways, IT has been a success, a place where this vision has been working. Even if that success is incredibly tenuous, this area has become the heart of territory now claimed by the three.

Still, when I visit IT over the spring, five thousand bars of soap were being produced a day at the user soap factory via equipment purchase to the micro one backed by the rona Christoper shaka. The owner smiled ear to ear and said this work was not possible without hydro power. At a maze factory a few minutes away, Alice manner took off his leather coat and picked up a giant calculator to show me how many thousands of dollars he saved hydro power at in ditch costly generators and employee thirty people.

The maroo made this possible, he said, econ, things are much easier now. And the park run chocolate factory and nearby benny gives coco grows a fair Price. And the legal market, IT, produces ten thousand bars a month, also powered red by hydro numbers poised to grow.

Now that version girl is teamed up with ben flex eastern congo initiative n ng o, helping bring part produced chocolate to stores in the U. S. According to demonize power from angers, hydro plants is created over twelve thousand jobs.

Since the average college households has at least five members. One job is an outside stabilizer in a place where desperation drives radi zia. None of the core congress cripe to team R X. Mala, but some of the temper workers who participated in construction were notes to be at the park, said quarters in human gobble the stakes to this experiment on the stark display near piles of compensated charcoal and a gilla cemetery is the grave of the first female ranger windows, make stuff, t animals and rifle straps in the workshop filled with dozens of stars, barring names of the fAllen.

My husband loved this place, a woman named mom, and the eller told me, with five months to feed after he died, SHE toiled as a day labor until SHE learn to trade here. IT gave me value hope. On my last morning in the park, shelling began early.

The next day, missiles strike over the sky as the m. Twenty three moved against the army with the longer staff and thousands of congolese in the middle. Within days of my departure, the morale ordered roman gobs evacuation.

My tb was next. Later that week, the U. N.

Helicopter crashed over a malicious held area and fighting in gulf root shou and the T. V. Through IT.

All park staff stayed by luck or divine magic. The m. Twenty three retreated back up the mountain. The respite, though, turned out to be short lived. By amid summer, fighting had resumed.

Towns fell as the rebels swept toward goma, the government declared its oil ambitions, and in August two thousand and twenty two, U. S. Secretary of state antony y. Lincoln announced a plan to jointly examine the extraction areas. Since then, the hydro plant has been hit by artillery, and a high voltage line to go up has been struck.

The end twenty three is continued its bloody campaign in, and in october two thousand and twenty two seized roman garble, leaving the arrow and staff reliving and occupation that feels early, reminiscent of what captivated viewers of a longer a decade ago. In early january two thousand and twenty three, the m twenty three announced its withdraw from roman gobble, but parks staff warned that they pulled out of other captured territories in recent months, only to quickly return. And the rebels are still being seen in the area.

And even if the m twenty three actually retreats, various other rebels remain. Just a few weeks ago around Christmas, a group called the my mi killed. Two ranges goes beyond, meanwhile, is continued prosody zing about rpt s's future traveling to ghana for the first african bitcoin conference.

And he's waiting for things to cool off before returning to the zero. And the marrow is still waiting. Kyah and uba ja are still hard at work, and the risks are still plugged away in the zero.

After so much luck, good and bad, the director is stuck in place with a small team. I put IT in a late August. What's that call? Just holding our heads above water. This article was published on the thirteen of january two thousand and twenty three and was read by Martin view cannon for.
