Shownotes Transcript

Baltasar Gracian was a 17th century Jesuit who taught in colleges across the Kingdom of Aragon – he was also the chaplain to the Spanish army at the siege of Lleida.  The Art of Worldly Wisdom was published in 1647 – it’s a collection of three-hundred aphorisms offering "pragmatic, hard-headed and coldly calculated advice" on how to thrive in the cut-throat world of Baroque society.  Julie has a rich discussion with Christopher Maurer who has translated the works of Gracian from Spanish to English.
