One of the great ironies of living in the world that fetishizes diversity is how similar everybody, everybody in charge is exactly the same. They have the same opinions. They were the same close, even looked the same physically.
So when you see somebody in the public guy who doesn't look the same, intends to kind of stick out, you don't forget IT. If you've watch professional golf, any time in the last thirty five years, you may have noticed goal for golf, or golf or golf, a guy smoking marborough goal for goal. Who is that guy? And that, of course, is one of most famous golfers in the history of golf, john daily, who doesn't look or act or think like pretty much anyone else who plays the game. And so we thought to be really interesting, sit down with him and find out what he's like. He joins us on such an honor .
to have you here.
Honor to see you. Are you kidding? So you've played got you said you started .
arkansaw like forty years ago.
So you still point .
yeah older but by the champion ter, we have a blast. And it's one sport you can play all your life.
all your life. Do you ever think of yourself as like the one guy? He doesn't seem like everybody else .
on tour kind of fit that mode. No, I didn't have really a potpie when I grew up. So like, and look down there now.
We had at nine holes in ark aransas. We had nine holes. And I wait the pons in the first old and sell the good balls to the club and take the old balls. I wasn't known up to play the course, so on sundays I could go out, play some of the members, let me play with them, but I don't have to play on a baseball field.
This right down from my house. How did you pick golf with your data?
I saw on TV, my dad played a little bit, but IT wasn't his a game sport. But now I just found in love to watching on T. V.
Would you good at IT right away?
I was kind of natural at IT, but i'd learned jack lives, came out with these golfed, digest lesson ties, had a grip and had to hit a car, had to hit a hook. And so when I learned i'd set at home plate a grip on that, he had to cut the right field and hit a straight shot to center. He had draw the left flop shot to the pitches, mount chip, and runs the first base, their base flop shot, second base flop shot over second base. I mean, just I just learned IT from a cartoon that he did back in the early seventies. And I the walk and grew up everything from jack legals 这 in .
grab the country。 No.
no, he was a nine whole course. And then, as I got older, played there. And we live there for long time as as I grew up, just fell over. The place is very quiet, peaceful there in, don't wanted to be.
What does your parents think?
No, I was pretty much played all sports, played you know, football, basketball, baseball, everything. But the one thing I loved about golf, he didn't have to run in IT. Yeah, so i'm very flat for that.
I couldn't run for anything. So want to play footboys of filled kicker and I could throw out a mad is couldn't run. So fortuna, kick foobar to high, high school. I kind of finished maya well, two and half years a kick foobar to high high school in jeff city early and finished up at our console to get in in state tuition in arkansas because I just .
couldn't afford to .
do our three years.
Anyone know yeah, how is that different than for professional offers like the tour?
It's tough. You know, back in IT was all state open. You didn't have the corn ferry.
Tory, you can have these. Tory, you know, I end up plane. My first time that was missouri stayed open. IT was in August.
I think eighty seven and a borrow three hundred dollars from a mom, eight and three, three, one, the time mate, one, sixty eight hundred dollars and never look back. I try to get on the check. He says, you take IT and what you .
ve got to do with this.
you ve never had any other job. No, I cleaned .
cards and stuff and you still like IT. It's.
I love you. I love to play. I love IT. But when you hurt and things you know, you just can buy this game hurt in based the last seven years of had both knees done, both feeds done, have had shoulder problems of her back problems in. Now I got diagnosed Better cancer four years ago.
So right now, but I but you know is part of get note know what I can't know, everybody knows me saying this. They think i'm fully you know what but i'd do like to practice and but when you can that's with sucks I am more about I like to go on a violent rate wedges yeah you know, I don't sit on a driving range. I like to hit in the grains and stuffin. I'm kind of a player practice guy. But when you can do that to your ability, it's tough to compete because these guys on the champions turn all over the world are so good, they're unbelievably good.
Think one of the reasons people are measured, ed, by you and have always been is because clearly you're succeeding through natural talent. Mean, it's not like what are we looking at here? Just to give the audience some perspective. This is right. So this is what you would consume .
over eighteen holes. I used to, I drink a lot of john, a good boys.
Now is, is health drink.
not my sweet little in a voc. I can drink a lot of play, but I drank .
a lot of names. But you still played the highest level.
Yeah, I still by the british, and i'm still in that time, sixty in the P. G. Eight times sixty five, the regular.
I guess what I mean, you see some athletes and you feel like they were trained from birth, almost like the soviet block used to .
do in the olympics. What a great even being he is. And I mean, her pop is honor. I mean, I member, we played at the beautiful uh, lima and William, yeah, jois plays magic eighty phone number.
Unfortunately, when he came out, if we sit along, he was, and that maggy set IT up a kid play nine holds weather. What a great girl bit SHE had bought seven hours before he played my nose with me. I would have to get the stretch that many balls for seven hours. But that's the entity of the game.
Now these guys work and they work and they work and all them have teachers and the cheers and you know who guy, who girl, whatever is you have yeah, I just never argue taking golf series, but not taking the dead series yeah you know, when we fuses elder tom watsand, arne jack and all of us, you know, we go, we go play practice round, we go the barn, have a drink, all these guys go work out, but we hit some balls, but maybe at some pots. But then we go to bar and have a drink, go to dinner, wasn't going to work out all this stuff did. It's a ten hour day job for all these guys. Now that's what they put themselves there.
There is something kind of cool and old fashioned about the man who doesn't do that, who doesn't have a problem, pausing for a cigarette game and still win.
Spent a one, but, you know, I still compete.
Was there ever a point when you thought I get that I can do this anymore?
Yeah, I think a lot of us go to that. You know, you're not playing good. I mean, least last seven years have been tough. I really have not played one champions to one hundred percent and as fortunate to unused.
And I think in two thousand sixteen, but the you know just trying to be healthy, giving yourself a chance to compete really well as is via what you want. But no, i've want to get to have had both knees done, yeah, full replacements. And this will be the first year of actually been over.
I have two good news. So hopefully twenty four without any other crap. Me back actually get through a year without lymph.
No.
I love, I love the game and I love to compete, but I just want to compete the way I know I can. Pete.
so you're playing on tour. Do you like go to gender .
the other players at night? Yeah.
a lot if you're open in your politics pretty direct .
about IT yeah I say is common sense in our country.
Do you think you get the majority of you among offers?
yeah. Thank all of us on the tours and everything we all want. Dad, come back.
really? why?
Because he was a great present and he's a great guy. When you get to annoy me, i'm knowing since early nineties and he was funny, can't member the turn of. He flew his helicopter and we played a program.
We went out back. We talked a little bit. And when he stood up, he is, mark my words, will be president united days one day.
This is back in ninety two, ninety three, ninety four. Maybe I did. I did. Interesting unbeliever, smart individual, that people got to get behind him. We've got ta do something.
So but among professional office, that's like a pretty common view down. I was his golf. How would you like?
I get to work with his chip in a little bit, but he had a good. He puts a good, but is to work on cheaper.
He just got keep time.
You GTA move the body. Everybody, thanks you for your chip. You going to move IT back. You actually you need to move IT up if I don't seem for a while goes back to that bad .
habit again when you .
correa chips like a which you like tiger or fail.
So why not be like full time trump golf coach?
I don't think he has .
time to play that much cause he think he does seem serious about IT.
He loves IT. He's passed in about IT. But when I love by me, he plays quick.
We go up playing off. We go up at eight, seven of them. We're done in three hours, don't mess around .
and cheating off.
Is that true? Oh yeah, I mean, bill, would he would take the club back? The old shit, giving another ball before even hit the first one.
We know another one down, but he never kept score. I mean, did you get play with them? Yeah, had to play within one time.
What do .
you think .
need take of tennis?
really? yeah. What about obama? I didn't play with him. I never, never got to meet him and play with him.
But that bad. But he loved there, right?
Yeah, that's okay. I mean, hey, there's a lot of people that never get IT are never get out, but they love IT keep playing in if it's something love to do and go on to do is a great game. But you know these guys, they don't have the time to really work on their game.
And these are things they want to. Lot of were run in the country, you know, yeah, some did a good jobs, some did a shady job. We only who did a great job.
And he .
needs to win .
a pretty guardian. Why this for the satisfaction? Bring our country back together, get some common sense, go on in here again.
And, you know, look what he did the four years. How great was our punching the four years he was an office. And now look at IT, no secure bords licence out the roof.
Mean, what the hell happened? Where did you go? Mean, I was love in the four years of daddy to present. And it's all going to help in two years, three years. This is what happened .
coming.
We all did when that elected. I definitely saw lot of corporate people that were right all the time launch alternate. They also all happened. I think IT was gonna en.
Have they ever lead on you .
to shut up now? Why would free speech.
Workers in every mean, if you're in the N, B, A, you can have your opinions.
let's their problem as stupid they should like, you know, when they were new in national items. Now that was was kind of tell us, you know, tell on america, kiss kiss are s yeah, what what was that all about? You tell me, i'd like to know because I don't understand our football players or indian national anthem. And you know, I never forget one games in a field, there was a the steer guy that that served what you only want to came in a yeah, what happened?
I don't know. I I think IT was obvious that certain people wanted americans to hate their own country. And so they used sports figures to send that message, your countries embarrassing.
It's immoral. Give IT the finger. Hate IT you know .
so much power athletes have you to be able to go that I don't know if it's that left or just that stupid and what they're .
being used yeah .
but then there are the ones who are looking like kate is doing IT that.
But you never felt that in goal at all.
Now, now, with our guys where we believe in the american flag, we believe in our freedoms and we believe in what we, we, we travel probably more than any athlete on the universe, and we have to store our passport. We have to get vies and look at our border there just come in shock clothes and the mind administration done nothing but says all the borders is under control.
Just seven million people whose identities we don't know living here and .
what they say in his term, there's over. I don't know how many that they found that were felons or they were terrorists or whatever more than any other.
What do you think they're that votes.
votes all. They wants his votes.
They just want to stay in office.
You think they are going to make the illegals into voters? I heard they .
given a voter cards on anything. Anyway, they come in. I don't know it's true, but that's what i've heard.
Yeah, I would think that the only why, what what else would they let a man? What is the reason democrats want all these people to come in free? And I got a guy that plays our senior to help with his name, been here forever, one major on the tour and couldn't get a VISA really ah but yet you're letting all these illegals come in even on whatever they want makes no sense to me but there's .
going to .
a reason for votes. I think it's votes. I don't know any other reason.
And that happened like instantly the second band .
got there yeah .
and no one says anything about .
I feel bad for there's onions, the good california and Jackson I made that whole border and I mean, I feel bad for the farmers and everybody and you see everyday, I mean, the stories, these cut their fences, wring their homes. I mean, why? Why would the president states like that? But these people do that to own americans?
Maybe if you hit the country, want to destroy, you would do that.
apparently. But we get up there right now. They must take our country.
You think there's a chance trump could win with a systemic one we have.
I don't know. I am looking at I will. I'm looking at some many states that are changing that I kind of want to vote on.
But all I know is I hope he wins again. All I was back, so I died, is one of the greatest human beings met the families. Once you get to number, just good, hard to people.
And he only wants to help americans. He doesn't want anything out of IT. He wants to protect our country, which I think putin never would invaded the ukraine if you have been. And I don't think almost what attack is really like they did of trappers in office, actually believe that think is .
probably something to that.
I bet you some sugar.
Do you make cigars?
Yeah, my body's in new york, the dominant, the hand made. I got the shorts I call the short game, and I call the long, long game.
Do you think that tobacco helps your game?
He relaxed is me. It's a stress relief.
I mean, that's kind of your sign turn on the course. Yeah is a more well.
that takes us a water place. So using a pack around.
have you ever been under pressure not to do IT on the course?
Now the tours been pretty good. I mean, there's been places that we go when there's, you know, a draw. Whatever said, you can smoke, but I get these old things. I never go one on the ground. It's a little part. So you put a man, this was a little older, I get some new one, but it's what the fire department where and he just stick in in there though in their pocket. And the when you own a golf course and you see cigars and cigarettes on your grains, yeah and they get the Green mos kind .
of things to pay off yeah believe that you think tiger would be Better if smoke.
I feel badly .
hard to you beat him, hung over once.
I still drunk, actually. Yeah, that was a funny story.
Where went and where I was a sure.
with early two thousands, IT was the region like twelve or fifteen prose, but we didn't played to get the first day. And i'm sitting there with my boys. What is Chris been responsible mind since then? And I was like ninety four.
Nine had been. Ninety four spent a long time ago. And we have the round table.
Sure was. And I got my boat back. And then, and all our guys, I just meet these guys, right?
First leg was a car dealer in ontario, california. We became good friends. He's been, fortunately, since then.
Tiger came, man, and I will see. Come, have a drink with this man. Come two hours later, were still under you come on and come have a drink with.
Now I go work out. And this is going often about five or six hours. We're still there, just pound and get and dark having a good time.
I got a sponsorship about what I was happy. And teda becomes out the suit, the tux, and I go where you going? He goes, I got a good tar on states for you.
Um you got to go to dinner. I don't know anything about a dinner. I didn't even know about a dinner.
He always told me, when there's dinner, you gotto go. I'm still in gob shoes. I get no shoes on.
I mean, got my golf. She's off. I'm barefooted. I got my shirt. After that, I got shit spill all over me and .
breaking of jack animals.
And he's play a try. So the bottom was IT very far as so I stumble over there. There's a chair as guitar, but had nine on strings like Willy place, right? Didn't know you get your phone and you can move a tar tune and turn IT up.
I did not have the doors got standing ovation. I said, i'll see a guys tomorrow. T. L. C, early in the morning, we tee off.
My caddy was drunk wailers, though there's only two times of every drank on the go, of course, want to have a few course lights. We had a long wait. Play the back man at river, we had a long weight down four, five course lights as playing like shit.
And just like four groups, read the tea off on the front. I'd down those, shoot four, five hundred on that side and make the cut again. That finished third.
But the finite about tiger was when I got on the tea, I had my catty bring me a crown or a jack coke and he's Carrying the bag. You would never play sure with the the first one he's walk and walking through all the cactus m that go on the seal not to spill my drink. I grab my three and I go on the tea. Magelone story showed I shoot like sixty five I X body the whole day.
That's incredible.
That's fun.
So what we did wasn't the lesson you should drink more in the goal. Of course.
i'm not saying you should, but you know, I I only done IT twice, but I was only that one drink. So I don't think I think the statue limitations are .
out for find now oh, you to do that now .
like the programs on our tour champions tour, you can have a few in the programs, but now you can in the names.
Would you change that if you could?
Well, yeah, try labor.
Do you play like in your private life? After with a beer?
I drink this. I drink a little bit. I drink our good boy. va. I like to drink a straight with little day cope on the side.
You drink a bad can straight with that coke, like a that coke chaser.
You drink good boy back and change with this.
You make your own bodkin.
Yeah aliexpress knows that we have a lot of great, great friends and investors and we're really earn a lot of stores in hour co walmart circle cages to cuss on lot of local in florida, we started in florida, we're key west all the way to jacks and via circle. okay? Congress, huge.
Duchy, learning about twenty six states. Now, total one. Abc has been wonderful. Yeah, this is going to be my true retirement for my kids.
My kids, you before .
I know of.
I have there been hints that you have others.
No, no, not yet. But what told me?
So your agent keeps track the paternity claims pretty much.
Now I got three beautiful kids blood. And then I get honest child character that she's been with me and he was too. I feel like she's mind. So why even got .
little .
right place? We university arms, we want the P. N. C. A couple years ago. We're going to hopefully get we find a second last year. Hopefully we're going to good this year.
Is IT surprising that arkansas, which was always kind of insecure, like an arkansas now, like this popular state, the property values dramatically higher, and people were moved in dark sol.
yeah. I mean, favor is one of the probable one of the dark favor. A lot of towns and in arkansas voted and that population number one, number two, safest places to live.
Yeah, my favorite architects, just, you come see, our campus IT is unbelieving. Our sports stuff is barna just put balls. This is big as nfl. The stuff that we have for these kids are basketball muscle and coach more baseball liming. Every sports ranked we just got to get football .
back happened. What did you make? A live golf.
I think is great. I I would ay IT why .
that has .
still each something I .
was opened at first self. Look, guys, you play your fifteen tournament. We play IT, you know we have to play fifteen on the regular tour and I think eleven and twelve the champions tour.
Want you do that, then let us go play for everyone. You know, I think goes a growing game. You know i'm not good and now I don't get to paid to go play europe.
I get paid a lot of money to go play european events. What's the difference? Is no difference.
But you, I think got after growing game, I think lives looks like it's a lot of fun. Yeah, I would be perfect. They have concerns.
The guys have fun. They can wear shorts, know the problems like we can now they right around the car. I mean, it's almost, I plan the champion store yeah three days ago. F no cut, but will say that lives have a bigger purses and we do chain to win four million dollars, four million dollars to plant fifty four old. That's pretty good .
a and then you .
get your team. If you win your team, I think it's nine hundred, three point six million. You get nine and experts ones.
Is that true? Someone told me that guys on the P. G, A tour can actually went up in the red at the end of the tour from transportation costs, like some people on the tour lose money.
Oh yeah, and that's one thing that jon hand did. I think if you got you two card, you're guaranteed to get five underground, I think. But I think you .
yeah.
I think they give you five hundred grand no matter what. You get your cord. I think now you get five hundred grand, which in pay your expenses easily for a year.
But some of the people are not making big money now.
Now you lose your car in one twenty six to one fifty. You might get a few, but after one fifty, you count on your own.
I read that you lost a ton gambling.
Why have you do that? Had fun. He was .
black jack .
back in the days, you know, you could place seven, play all seven hands, and they change, and I only play three. So i'm glad they did because I quit back and I just place lots.
Have you have .
one and thoughts? How much .
did you lost the butter?
I lost over ninety million employee, one over fifty seven, so forty one is thirty nine, forty, fifty nine.
Seriously, yeah, you don't sound Better.
I did IT got to get over IT too long.
What did you lose?
IT IT everywhere I love vegas. I went a lot of, you know, had this great contract, good market, where many here, million there.
You look right on the hand.
have you around four hundred, four hundred to five hundred fifty thousand. And yeah, I had a split and double .
downs that sometimes.
sometimes a lot more lost than I want.
Think it's .
supose to drill.
That's what people .
do IT twenty thousand, nine hundred forty thousand up right there. So you get double down in split IT has a quick.
did you play the odds like play the the car of me? Or did you go by gut a lot .
times if you get a film, you on the role, sometimes I would hear a hard twelve. I twelve. Yeah, I would.
I hit IT because, you know, you see a bunch of pictures on there and think it's got to be, just give me anything less than ten, right? I care it's IT too. And most time to do that would break, but they say, don't hit. On twelve there was six or less is shown. But this is a nice, but you play .
by intuition sometimes. And do you think that worked Better or not as well?
A body mind, but it's all feel, you know, two decor goes really fast. Yeah so you really can get in horizon. You do a six that you not run a home run, but happens about one at every ten times.
So what's the most one? And one day .
I want three point two three, three point three million on slots. Bali is one night.
Would you do that night .
after I said with a buddy man, I was ripped matter. Tell the time. Modern and IT was mean and share. You get married. And I went to twenty five other machine. IT was a ten time machine, and two tens and red seven ago on seven thousand, three hundred sixty grand, immediately went to the five hundred thousands and kept in eighty thousand, one hundred thousand. And this was the greatest night .
i've had in some value in vegas. And did you cash out and .
walk out paid off markers? I've got either freeze.
I got either that's exciting up for a new credit card to pay off the other ones.
exactly. Robert. Peter, to pay.
Did you to go to big here?
there? But I I don't gamble like I used to. I love playing the slot.
Become off the road three or four a week. He just tired. I just want to put in front of machine moke cigarettes. Drink john dAllison, hopefully as a jack bottom I got the heart rock and tmp, I hit my machine two hundred forty grand twice. And last week.
and this week.
last week, yeah, two hundred forty.
Seriously.
why? Which doesn't happen often.
Would you put into IT to .
get that proba hundred and fifty and you are Peter to pay for. So what you know?
I said, anyone, what is your agency I look at?
I don't like IT too much. He doesn't on IT marketing. But hey, it's the bad habit that I could get my drilling go on again. Just .
thought about something .
or anything like that. No was like belly fly a paul. I'm good at that, but I don't go to the beats. They don't know wales on the beats, so I don't go there. I'm not gonna AR a speed up with this good.
So even though you know the atrocities against you and in the end you're lose, it's still worthy .
for the it's a bad habit that I love to do, but I don't do. I don't get markers. I don't do that crap anymore.
What happens if I ve always wondered if you're a whale in a casino and you start losing big and you can't pay like what where does that leave you?
That's why I don't give .
a racy what they .
do well that you can do a downpayment as you pay something that they're fine with that back in the day.
No threats.
Now if you don't pay anything, you know you don't know who's going to, not your door. Is that true? I don't want that ever happened. No, it's true.
You can be, you know, people got in trouble a few.
yeah. What is almost the illegal department? They get lawyers now, but can imagine back in the day what, and these would have been pushed up.
So the odds Better in foreign casino. Can you play money, carlo?
Better. It's all the same. It's all stuck to the house, to the casino itself. But you think they got .
so much money .
now never get in to craps a little .
bit .
when I was bored at at that night for some reason all the time I craps and actually they're tty good.
Is there .
anything regret .
from your career? No, we. Are these stupid things, but as part of life, the problem is doing them over and over.
Gen, am I regret on some of that stuff? I, yes, I really done. I mean, I think everything is just part of life.
What we go through, not everybody's perfect. We're gna make mistakes. But one thing i've always done, I ve went up to mind, you've never buds, never had a lie for me. I've never had a life. I've never light on, never line in front of my fans and stuff. Because if I screw up, i'm I meet I screw up not at hide IT as sooner later it's gonna get out and then IT just makes you look like a liter pretty administration .
is around after all these years and all the all the drama, you're still popular. You're still working because you didn't like.
I love people. I love my fans. I love to come out and watch me play and has been disappointing these few years because i've been hurt and have been out deployed in my potential, but they still come out and I love them for. And one thing and athlete, if golfers are athletes, I guess they are not. They work out.
but they are. If they're athletes.
I don't work out, I put out so but .
you don't think of yourself as an athlete.
I mean, the hand .
eye coordination required to hit a small all range just got, I mean, that qualities .
I guess I don't an i'm .
not a god is going to .
work out after around anything like that. I mean, maybe there's been that talk with coppers or athletes, but I will take this, I guess I am because all the swings that we've taken, I never forget playing a program as one hundred and twenty agrees on that if this with bread for and we're on the guy were on the sixteen thousand and five five at the tpc course there that when and it's hot and he he's mission and is this slow, he looked at me this man.
I'd rather have a three hundred fifty pound limit come at me right now than doing this yet. But IT is, you know, we're always we're always bad. Whether we're always playing a different places at the weather is good or bad, you know, it's a tough sport. And the swings that folks that you take on your body takes on, the swings that we do IT catches up on.
Yeah, what's the best course .
in the next states? I'm kind of favourite. August just want up, of course. But four points out is one of my favorite. Byker was always one .
of my favorite.
yeah. Now I was fortunate to and I think it's just a good, classic, long, hard golf course and is public. I've always loved toy pines.
By a government. Is a ton of, but those are my three favorites. I always used to love to play for ari and always love going to be play his tournament.
Who your favorite officiers? Well, he's want to own jack, but he's alerts. Try my best friend ever. He took me on his wing when I accord. Why I don't know.
