enjoying the season. So if you're ready to make smart money moves and avoid that financial holiday hanover.

tune me OK. Here's the.

Hey, guys.

i'm ritual cruise. I'm George amel.

and this is smart money happy hour.

Thankful all around. Well, this is the show. We're two friends who happening. Money experts talk about what you're talking about, everything from pop culture, current events and money.

And today we're talking about the gift of gifts were leaning into the holiday year.

So great because today, George, right now, if you are watching when this episode releases IT is thanksgiving and we're .

not with our families, we're here for you that so much we care about you guys. And I hope you're with people that you love doing things that you love. Maybe you're in a car, maybe a avoiding family.

I don't know. Yeah, maybe they are traveling to grandmother's .

house down .

the highway. This seems to like watches in the thank you. Or maybe europe in a Better room, mature in laws. China, just get away from the craziness and you just need a little, a little light hearted cheer and you've turned us on were either way, happy thanksgiving. I'd love thanksgiving to you.

I'm a fan. There's something that's A I don't know. It's not dramatic. It's not stressful.

Christmas feels little more just because we're to get in the Christmas. Someone talk about gift .

giving in this episode. So we have you covered by some food orwin .

a more tail of .

the red sands. Greer, you like to point there .

seems so there's no alcohol ness.

but if you are, this is a great way to make on thanksgiving, honestly yeah so if you need a drink tonight, you're going to get the recipe in the shower notes in the rating, in the cost per glass at the end of the episode.

So delicious okay, George, is thanksgiving. So what is one thing you're thankful for?

Um recently I think my daughter is the most recent thing. I'm great before and watching with me be the most amazing mom I tell all the time you have. I tell me a like you have the most amazing mom who cares about you so much. Every decision has so much thought, and i'm grateful him as a package. Agh.

yeah, pack. Family, love, i'll be the same vein, I think. Family, yeah, the kids winter are like little nuclear. Family, extended families is great to love.

O, I never heard the nuclear that I never hear.

Spoken like that. I just like our little nuclear family, like a little so the little when increase is so great there. Yeah but I would say that you know it's a it's a big deal, things that you take for grand, it's in the day today as well like giving kind caused you to pause.

Like do you guys go around the table and do .

like I here do with raw? And yeah, that's like a share in tradition.

And we're head a boston for the holidays to do my family. So be nice.

How want you to be. Thanksgiving is very historical. IT is around that time .

that it's been said, boston is a very historical place and will be a nice chili new england fall vibe. So good. Another thing i'm grateful for all, especially this year, is when people actually know how to give gifts that aren't a complete waste of money.

And I know that sounds ungrateful, but I just am tired of just stuff for the sake of stuff. Yes, if you're going to do a gift, make IT thoughtful. But also, I don't want to have to read your mind. So we're going to help these people today.

everyone listening and watching because black friday is tomorrow and these shopping starts, if it's not already done, it's getting completed, probed in the next week or two. And yeah, we're going to help you out because gifts are fun. Are you a great gift givers that like a state.

the nurse, i'm a great that if you tell me what you want, I will find you the best deal on that gift budget. So that is my spiritual gift. It's not the thing. It's getting the deal on the things that you don't .

get screw what to give that I think the gift that keeps on giving soulless, you know and i'm not a great gift giver either and I wish I was because people that are and they get you that pain. You said this, you know, like three months ago and .

I just thought you oh my god, you mentioned IT conversation like a step on IT.

I wish I was Better at that. I'm not. I'm not what's like the best gift you've ever received.

Oh, my godness. That's a big question. I think childhood comes to mind because as an adult, there's less know there's less excitement around opening a gift.

It's like, cool. I could about this, but thank you for buying a short as a kid. The two best things I ever got were an electric guitar, yep, and a video camera.

So this was like forth grade and fifth grade. Those really like shape to I M. I mean, the guy was a musician, and I started to bans, and I was in film, and I wanted to go into film.

I still love video. Yes, i'm on video today. So this was the most formative gifts that meant the most. And from the word not cheap, like i'm thinking back, I like to buy a kid back then. I was like, seven hundred thousand for video camera.

Was I? I want a video camera.

yeah. How about you?

I'm not getting a boom box. I was a big deal because I had A C. D. Player, anette, but I was like, all in one, and you could just pick IT up with the handle and I would Carry with radio.

And I had recording songs from the .

radio ay in record at the same time. And IT was great. We've got ta puppy for Christmas when there.

oh, that's fun when you were kids, adults, that's circle came in the box and home right now I do.

And actually this week they're going off to their house. No, I know we got we had six puppies and they are now all across the country.

Now you're giving the gift you're getting paid for, but still what a gift that is, what a gift that is to bring him up.

I know. yeah. okay. So George was all these different types of gifts that we can give. And so again, I think it's important to help all of you out there have gift that are practical as one more adults here. There's the sentimental gifts.

When is a good gift giver? He'll do like just like the wedding band for last anniversary. Like there's like sweet gifts that mean a lot.

But there's also the practical gifts that can go a long way with people. And you have different people in your life that value different things, are interested in different things. And we're gonna .

be here for the people, George. We're going to create the best gift less you've ever seen .

in your entire life for free. And we have our own under.

you can tell whose gifts.

So if we just told you what they are, are you ready? We got the wine and cocktail levers. So there is a cocktail shaker. And I will give courtine the cheese gal credit because I follow her and there .

is a cocktail shaker yes.

thank you. Does not uh, freeze your hands. It's like a sermo sermo there's A A protective covering because we have a cocktail shaker. When you shake IT so much of the ice, you're like your hands cape froze because .

it's just a straight up metal shaker. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's right. Stay less.

steal. yes. But this has like a protective covering over so your hands ever get cold.

Do you know what type of shaker you have is like the boston shaker that has two pieces that you sort of stick on top diagonally little bit?

Or is that there has it's the top top. Ly, but the top is also a measuring, yeah, which is great. two. So two and one, it's fantastic. Do you know the brain of.

oh, that's right. We should tell .

the people we're .

going if you got .

wine or cocktail.

This one I think is very thoughtful. And i've given this gift to cocktail levers in my life, and that is a vintage cocktail book. So i'm going ebay and search for, like nineteen fifties, a vintage cocktail book for a second hand bookstore.

Sometimes we will have these. And there's something about like a classic vintage cocktail book and making a drink out of that, that transports you. I think that's what a good drink does. And I think the old timmy drinks are so cool.

Yes, like the be easy days.

even like the fonds were cool.

everything is just like close now when you go back like the weather thirties, twenty years.

So so that's a thoughtful gift. That's not your standard of going to go buy a cocktail .

book on I was on so good are IT nexus for the people who love to cook in your life. My favorite cooking utensil, and I use IT probably twice a week. IT is a meat grinder, is actually, I think, a pamper chef.

But i'm sure there's get amazon dupe. But the way IT is like a spatula, but it's up and that has these like groups in that. But you you spin IT in your ground beef and IT makes me finest .

like talk belphin. Ef, we're going .

IT is what we're going for with real meats. But IT makes you really think that when I do.

spacetime saw or talks or child of.

I don't like.

cancel the gifts.

I got you, a meat ball maker.

meatball maker.

Go to this. Finally grounds your ground. Beef and IT is fantastic, not expensive.

It's wonderful. Questions, why do you like burgers? Isn't that just a meat ball has been free.

that is, George is fair. But I actually like my burgers more thin. I don't like smash addy. Yes, smash burgers all day. I don't like like mom and dad when I cook burgers at their house, it's like, really thick.

And I don't like, I don't like the like it's like a ball of meat, a burger and IT just IT doesn't work. Do you got to push your thumb in? I've earn that trick not too .

high on the top and right .

yeah David sharing hi.

just like like, hey, David, share if you're listening. I want to say i'll be happy to show up in your delicious burger instead of Rachel .

who ungrateful burger I know so I don't like, I like, I don't like when it's stick like that. It's not good, so thin and thin, so I may be I like me, Donald, just then.

then low quality that a White might give for people who love to cook a high quality city squeeze. And right, good one. Because most people have these dicky squash they've had forever.

And I got one I believe is on amazon. IT has like a metal extra piece, and you get twenty percent extra. Duce, wow.

And so I like to get the most that mined situs hundred. So this is a great gift. If you're still squeeze lives with, you're like arthritis. st. Riden hands. It's time to upgrade. OK.

Where do you get yours? Zo, yeah.

I was from amazon OK, but I remember that the selling point was after twenty percent more juice.

And like, I got me investment. And most people .

they don't have a good one. And that makes IT a great.

Yes, that's fair. That's fair. All right. Next this for the tech and gadget lovers out there. One of my favorite things, George, is a wireless phone charger.

Oh, where did you just put IT on .

the back of the year? I, my, now we will say there .

maybe are still a wire involved.

but I laid on top. You ve got to wait for the Green to light up because there have maybe like ten times or you think it's charging and it's not and that's obama. So you do have to like watch for IT.

My beef with those is you can't have a phone case that is blocking the back.

I have a phone case.

What is your look like but that's not blocking. Look if you a wallet on the back .

or something like, oh yeah yeah ah yours is clean yeah we just set IT right there and .

yeah so great. Give to that for the tech lovers and an extended phone charger. So we're talking like a six filter, and that is nice. You can get these cheap on name is on.

You get a pack of even I have like a twelve, if you really need a long, if this is going around a couture, something you can get them even longer. But I think it's we live in a world world. Why are you reaching over?

Ah yeah life too short to be rocking in the like three food, food, iphone table. I went home, I saw my dad iphone table. All of the medal was showing from inside.

The robbery was.

like, all coming off. And I went to, do you you need a Better table? So like that Christmas, I got them greater iphone.

K, that is all those things here just like i'm not gonna get new iphone cables, it's working. It's fine. Why you're risking getting electricity over the yeah.

life is too short. That's good. Like that when George, I nexus for your kids guys. So this was a gift.

Both of my girls got a different times and they they just love IT so much so funny to me. And it's so cheap. I can get a really cheap on on amazon, but it's a kid digital camera.

And so like it's just like this, like a little cheap digital camera. And that is terrible quality. I mean, like you would barely see IT, but IT IT has like a unicorn case on IT is just like this cheaper thing. But they they wear around their neck and they'll like little weird out ler, like they think it's so cool and take pictures and I have a screen and really because they don't have like phones and stuff um but they just they loved IT and it's like twenty books. We so if you have a older care.

how do you get the photos? forgive?

No, I don't even think you do. I mean.

I think it's just I don't .

sure there's a part. Sure there's some .

like can .

S D card S D U S asn't .

say U S P S? No, not U S P S.

Whatever that car is in there, i'm sure you can take IT out, but they don't even want the pictures. It's just the idea that they get to like have the since of gratification of their own .

like I get to take a picture and IT shows .

create yeah yeah and they think it's like, so fun so okay, it's cheap.

but yeah, it's fun. I go with a time will give for kids and I this depends on age. This is not for two year old, but as they get older, there's something about a crisp twenty dollar bill that just protect a little IT more.

And I think that older.

can I tell one of my uncles would always give me a fifty dollar bill. And it's so rare, even back then, that I would see a fifty dollar bill. So IT was like life changing to me, both the amount of money and just seeing the bill. I protect that thing with all my life. Where is IT that's most memorable?

I spent IT.

yeah, but probably on a game boy or something back then. You can do this in different wise, or you can put in the piggy bank or the college funder, whatever. But I like this.

One place is aking of just caption money for teens. You know the big thing is gas gift cards.

So as we get to driving age.

yep. And so that's what i've heard of a lot of people.

Does anyone want to spend money on guess? So it's a nice blessing to be like I want to think about IT. It's not coming out of my bank account.

That's right.

That's right. And I mean, gift cards are great in fourteenth because you know that's really what they want. Amazon target wherever their favorite store is. Starbucks, I don't know where they get coffee these days.

These kids are kids.

Here are parents .

and grandparents. You know, it's a good one as a thero gun .

there one they're they're N N. Yeah, i've got one of those. I never use IT, but I need to because I I pulled a muscle on my show sleeping last night.

I went in my parents level so like it's a good it's a good grandparent .

gift yeah and you there's a range of budgetary options here. You can get the cheaper one on name is on. You can spring for the nicer one.

Anything from books down her books down the store? Yes, i'm a sad chairs. Has any I did you know anyone that owns one of those like in their house? No, I was at someone's house once.

was like a, like a friend of a relative and they had like a like one of those forth thousand years. And I was like, I get IT. This is is like what we did get from my mom is like the foot you put is the neck fans. They are like the cooling neck fan thing if you do.

yes, they were a lot at, oh, Kelly is a fan. Yes.

love you seem disney world in the summer time of the games and all that do they work?

They really do yeah I think call just kind wasn't so done and like this yes, but IT when I was so hot that we're .

forth to the weekend and we will do on the whole firework thing and man, love IT. Wow, I want to try IT. But truthful ly, they just look dorky. And i'm not like not like got too cool for IT. And I feel like I just get made fun of if I was a certain .

look when wear next.

how one into the office. I never hear the end of IT.

No, you win. You going to do IT outdoor events, George, thank you. You not go many of those, but it's going alright. So when you are married, your spouse, you guys do Christmas gifts.

We decided, I think, pretty soon into our marriage that we were not going to get Christmas to give for each other. He was already a stressful time, a lot going on. So we decided to just say no to that. Same here.

Yeah, we know. Yeah, do Christmas .

what do get for each other? The occasions .

anniversary will do stuff. Uh, birthday every now then. But we're not eat. Neither of us are like really big gift people.

We versy two for the most part. We decided we'd rather have an experience together, like a really nice meal versus like I bought her a thing or jewelery totally. And so first days are the only one that we really go. I I want to get something .

I did get once on early on, cause I think this was before kids gave grow tickets.

wow. Is that his favorite artist?

He does love Gavin, the piano part of Gavin. He, yes. What is the .

other part of Gavin?

I don't know.

You like piano. And IT was and IT is fun when .

you know there's something that they would love and you surprise them with IT like that's a fun. That's a fn gesture for sure. So the surprise element is so far.

and I feel like the we're leaning toward experiences, is more of them stuff these days. So a concert for an other day.

love. I have a good one, but you can get creative. I mean, in the experiences you know, you can do like a pick ball was son .

or a bus making class, like kill class.

Be fun, yes, but to do something together, I think, is always exciting. And like .

subscription boxes, like a coffee subscription where they get a new yes, you know.

your level of connection actually does go up and you have a shared experience together. Just was perit. What will you do money in together? He would talk about that, that studies show from like even brain activity when you're doing something .

with someone that's why on the battle and yes.

did you say that too?

Yeah drinks make coke.

make coke um but they do this like crazy shared experience together and I bonds .

them what's the crazy thing like experience in winston have done the effect was bonding.

Oh, that's a great question. We've like height and trying that we've done like a like a really high .

thing like the heights thing is always like a yeah theory of heights.

So care for the heights. sure.

You guys. Well, I can think of one for you. You guys went to see atle, to see Taylor swift.

Oh yeah, that's scary though. No, but I feel like .

that's a bonding experience, total investing wearing the t 恤。 He enjoyed IT more than you did secretly.

Yeah, he he, he was confused half the time of like what .

is happening around here. But still, the fans are the continue.

You're so much so, so much. All right. The next one, which I think is always a fun one, is like the White elephant gift.

Oh, I love this. This is just like the Randall m kind of like less expensive. What's the thing that you love?

If I could do this for all Christmases, for all families, I would, I think I would just relieve the pressure. Everyone would be under budget because we're not all everyone buying a gift for every single person. And what do you want to? Two hundred dollars. I'm tired of that pressure. I love the idea of the the White elephant dirty sanda gift swap.

So fun. Okay, so what I would buy is a milk. Brother.

that's a good one. I box, yes.

my kids use its like make chocolate milk, like like chocolate serve in milk and i'll do that when then uses that for like milk for coffee and all of that. It's it's just a great little gadget to have.

I use IT all the time and I use IT for my new thing is instant coffee. Wait g no trader joes has an instant coffee. So at the ground coffee, it's instant. All you just mix IT with water or milk. And I use the little frog and IT firms up.

That's like below you.

I thought so too, but I found a recipe that makes IT budi where you add some Brown sugar. And there with coffee, and IT becomes this very decade. And so, again, a father, my White elephant, go to, this is gna sound, unlike me. Scratch tickets. I don't recommend people play the lottery, but I think for like a fun gift that .

we all do together.

make some yeah I did for the cousins one year because we all like grown adults buying each other gift cards for the same amount. And I like, this isn't fun so I bought the crossed word one that's five dollars yeah and IT takes like twenty minutes to cross off every single letter and see if you ve got any words. And some people want like twenty books of a five dollars ross words so you never know it's .

kind of a little game.

I went to IT. exactly. There's some competition there. So that's a fun one. Maybe you don't you didn't think of ramsey when you .

thought scratched to go. You did not. No, I did not. All right, I love to take a hint.

kind of a gift.

What's that me? What's second? People like give you like a vacuum clean, you like I know whatever the some extra sponges because yours or growth like whatever the thing is, it's like here is like a little um so there's a couple doesn't mean like the total money make over book could be that.

And the great thing is, George, the total money make over book is one of our black friday sales here solutions and actually all the books are your books, my books. So good to ARM these solutions can make sure to check IT out because we have some great deals this Christmas on all of our products. So they actually make really great gifts. It's not just a hint of like you should do Better with your money, but can actually .

help people and you can pare IT with little twenty doll billion. Chapter one is a little surprise. Maybe it's taken out.

You do you? I've gone on that practical people who lose everything that you love. And that's an apple air tag.

Or any of these tags track things, track your kids, track your phones, track your keys. I've got IT everywhere. Yes, so I I love that.

We put that in our two cases.

Sometimes here's to take the hint gift, but someone a fridge. But because when we go, we go hang out and we'll be a cooler that store everything. And IT was kind of a nightmare to just store everything in this cooler in the garage. So let's just go in and get a fridge so that whenever were over there, a gift store, our crispy boys, you know, I level of Sparkling water.

Yeah, people and a coach, have you realized .

that you cannot drink room temperature Sparkling water?

Yeah, I actually like IT when my topic chicos go kind of like this room temperature does not bother me. why? No, kind of like heat everything out, but he goes down.

Kind of help get you a Better help subscription.

That's a good right. Here's for some gift for the person that has at all. And you've gotta cinema go ta go like the picture .

out the homemade .

calendar. So like a day Green kids. I got my parents, uh, for the likely a yard, like a sign in the yard and had these like wooden errors pointing different ways and once i'd like me use kitchen and at points inside the house property ves dog because that way the dog parks of the big dog is, yeah ah I got off the I like that's a great gift person getting the socks .

with a picture of their gone IT that's a other kids on IT that's a fun one hand written notes, homemade or work a book about something that they're interested in, a photo session with the family, something that's a little more felt personal, yes. Or an experience if you know they are, they're in the art. Let's get on my membership to the art gallery in town, in the museum .

or visit.

That's a good one, guys.

Well thought ful.

for someone who could use A D stressor.

Maybe moms on the moms out there.

I think witney would take a spot gift card. So there is some really thought ful gifts that I don't think you are a waste of money and people will actually appreciate them and not return them.

We've all been there. Hope we help you guys out turn the gift yeah .

and I think gift giving expectations around the holidays, they can easily get out a hand. And the last thing you want is to kick off the new year financially behind resent ful in debt. So please don't do that.

Yeah I think I ask, why are we doing this right? If you're all adults buying adults gifts in the family, like just .

versatile.

we like really need to be doing this right? Or um if there was a certain dollar amount that was always spent, like question why or is your motivation so people you know could see all of this and how fun of is like like just like getting the motivation. And in chAllenging what used to be the norm, I think is .

setting the boundaries. Today's a good data set them. Don't wait until Christmas.

then get like genuinely like I hope someone else speaks up right and you could .

be the hero just say, hey, can we limit the gifts? No, no gifts. Over fifty dollars.

What we w me and I .

love the question that you have people before they buy something oh.

that if nobody sees this purchase. So I don't want .

IT there IT is yeah that's a good because honestly, a lot of the times around the holidays, i'll buy things for myself. There's a piece of me that's what's a really good deal. I might as well stock up. So there's a piece that we get to also look in the mirror, yes, and stay under control up for yourself.

This is the season to give yeah and that's .

where the budget comes in handy. And I love i'll make a little budget separately for Christmas and go right. Here's what are going to each person and I want to make sure we stay and to that budget.

yes. And every dollar is a great way to do that. This is our budgeting APP. You can set all of your line items for each person. You can have one line items for all Christmas smas one.

And then I go to my notes that and have everyone's there and drag and drop all the transactions into that one. Or you want to even want to be more detailed, list everybody out in every dollar for december. Yeah and you can have all there or november if you're shopping.

And that's what I love about every dollars you you can duplicate november and then you can make tweet to december and all the people and then january delete those categories and then you're and you've moved on without debt. So please don't go to debt for any gifts for anyone for any reason.

Put a link down lows you can check out every day if you have already.

All right, George hit the mostly in the episode and we close out every episode with .

t as .

charged and this is where our producer er Kelly gives the say no guilty to charge question every week and if for guilty we take a sip Kelly, alright, have you ever been given a gift by someone and you didn't have one for them? So you lied about not having IT by saying like, oh, i'll let you give the home that kind of thing so that you don't feel bad yeah, i've done that.

This happens with friends that I realize our gift givers and I am not. And then I realized, oh, like I have to reciprocate. This can be a one way street. So there's been I have do always.

I have learned throughout the years, i'll just receive and just say thank you and not feel the pressure. But I feel like I used to feel and i'd write your name down like I have .

to buy them something well, how in the one of these people? That's the question.

Yes, some of them I think a couple of bit like, oh my gosh, I gift from this .

person. What do you do? You even receive gifts from friends around Christmas?

No, not a time we've kind of stop doing that. I feel like we did that more. We are Younger, just kind of stopped more. But I will feel like i'll really and I get a gift and I like like .

this yeah yeah no i've been there. There's I can think of two friends are particularly who are really good friends yeah but I didn't know .

we were at like that were not like giving gifts .

for Christmas and to and as a child, my parents would give gifts to my best friend's parents when they kept doing this. And so they would give us a gift. So we would give him a gift. So next year, they would give us a gift and then we would have to give a gift even long after me in this guy .

or friends and .

I had been here since i'd even seen the guy, and they finally just, hey, we're going. We're not doing this anymore. Thank you.

Thank you. Someone has to break the chain. I pay forward.

Yes, just to say we to stop IT even very tradition, don't need.

You know, this has me thinking, Rachel, this guilty charge question, if I got you a gift, would you then, oh my god, a good, or this .

is a good relation.

IT happened. I feel you will be like, oh, that's so nice. You didn't have to. I didn't get you anything.

Maybe, maybe I would, right?

Because you can hear my feelings. You don't have that power over me.

yeah. If Michael redish got me a gift, yes, if you .

don't know, Michael is one of the best gift givers i've ever met, so you cannot top his get, that would be very difficult. I usually do a group gifts from Michael because you have to go big and make a very thoughtful personnel.

So oh, he's a high maintenance gift receiver.

He's just it's gotto be something like with some weight bit can't like a and I .
