Loft meeting. Loft meeting. Loft meeting.
I still cannot believe the audacity of the title of this episode that we recapped this week. And we get to say it again here at the loft meeting because we are taking your questions on 219. Hardening. Whoa. No, first of all, it's crazy. It is crazy that that is the name. Is it Kalk? It's good. That's what it's crazy. If you say it the way you just said it, the way you just said it, you said quick hardening cock. Kalk. Kalk. Kalk.
Yeah, like Macaulay Culkin. You don't say Macaulay Cockin. I don't think it's pronounced Culk. It's Cock. Well, whatever it is. I'm Googling it right now. You can do pronunciation. Hannah, because I'm anti-pervert, I don't look at it that way. Look, first it sounds like K-A-A-K. First thing when I look at pronunciation, which to me is Cock. We're going to hear it. Hold on. Let's see. Cock. Come on now. No, that woman's a pervert.
She a pervert. Conk. She's still a pervert. That's how it's pronounced. So that's not on me. That's just me knowing how to pronounce the word. I don't trust AI. I don't trust AI with any of this stuff. It's just affirming. So you want to dive in? I want to dive in. Oh, before we get going, though, I do want to share something super exciting. I would say maybe one of the...
Top things that I get asked about all the time on this show is about the wardrobe, the wardrobe, the bird shirts, you know, Zoe's dresses, Cece's cool model clothes like Nick's clothes that just Jake being Jake, all of it. Right. We get asked all the time about wardrobe and the head of costumes was Deborah McGuire.
one of the most iconic costumers in the entire industry. And her and I were texting today. And I think she's going to come and do a loft meeting with us and answer all your questions. So I encourage you, we'll give you the information at the end of this episode. If you have any questions specifically
things like this dress, this shirt, this look, this episode, send them in because we're hopefully gonna have Debra on the show. And she will then be able to share all of that stuff and spill it. She also did friends, by the way. So yeah, legend. She's good. She's good. She's good. All right. Okay, let's dive in. Question number one. You want to go?
go. Sure. Hey, y'all. Okay. I'm not going to mess around with you today. I have some hard hitting questions I want answered because I am a diehard fan, yada, yada, yada. Love the podcast. In season two, episode 19, quick hardening caulk. Do you guys know if Jake and Zoe actually broke that giant fish tank and have water spill all into the loft?
That was hilarious. I also caught Jake in that episode looking at his notes. No. Right at the start. He looks down into the bar at his script. Ah!
You can just see the edges of it on camera at 39 seconds. Get out of town. Lamorne, was Max actually touching your butt with his hand down your wetsuit when you lost your phone down there? Did you improv the joke about just peeing in the ocean? And would a number two help? Because that was hilarious. Naomi from Brisbane, Australia. Naomi. Naomi.
Naomi, Naomi, Naomi. First of all, I love the name Naomi. It's a good name. Great name. Great name. Did they actually break the giant fish tank and have water spill all in the loft?
Well, yes, they did. But what happens is it's rigged. So props, set design, that whole squad, they come together, they build a fish tank that can easily fall apart. And that's what they did there. Much like when you see a glass bottle get broken on someone's head, it's actually not real glass, it's sugar. Prop bottle. Yeah, it's prop bottle. It's like a sugary, plasticky thing that's made to look a certain way. And then when you hit it,
It explodes. Same with this fish tank. I'm not 100% sure what materials they used for the fish tank, but I can tell you it was real water. And they were real fish in there that did indeed get cooked later that day. No, I'm kidding.
That boy was hungry. No, I'm kidding. Sashimi. Oh, yeah. No. So that is my understanding of what happened with the fish tank. And water was spilled. Yes. That's a fact. That is a fact. You caught Jake looking at his notes. I can't believe.
I can't believe I'm going to go back and rewatch that moment because here's the thing. That's when when Cece gets a job at the bar and whatever season that is. I remember Jake telling me this is the best.
because everybody else had to be on the other side of the bar. There's nowhere to hide your sides, which is like your sides are just like your pages of the day that you're doing with your lines on them. And so he was like, but on the bar, you just place them down here. And it's like a, it's like a old Brando trick, right? Like whatever. You're like, you look down like you're thinking in the scene, then you look up.
Say the words. Deliver your lies. So I believe it. I did not catch that, but I absolutely believe it because I am also very guilty of it. Yeah, I'm not guilty of that because I'm professional. But what this reminds me of is an episode of, I forget what show it was or a movie, but Tyler Perry did a movie called
where there's a judge delivering like a verdict or whatever. And just in general, in that scene with the judge, but when they shoot over the judge's shoulder to the courtroom, you can clear as day see his script with his lines highlighted. Get out of town. They kept it in the shot. So yeah, no disrespect to our editors, but they probably weren't looking. They probably didn't think that's what it was because the audacity of Jake Johnson. Yeah.
To do something like that is just plain ridiculous, you know? And I think the fans deserve better. I applaud it. I applaud it. All right. So this is the big question. Lamorne, was Max actually touching your butt with his hand down your wetsuit when you lost your phone? If you know Max, then you know the answer is yes. Correct. Max goes for it. There's a moment in the... He wasn't touching my bare butt, if anyone's wondering. No. No.
But there was a moment where we were doing a photo shoot. I think it was season two, season three, maybe. Season three. I forget. But we were doing a photo shoot and they kept trying to get me to smile. And I just hate smiling in photo shoots, like big group shots. I just hate it. I just want to look how I want to look. But they always go, smile, Lamar. You got to show us your teeth. Smile. Show us your teeth is a terrible thing to say to somebody. Yeah, I'm always like, no. I'll show you my teeth when I say, fuck you. Yeah.
But I didn't feel like smiling. And Max comes up from behind me and starts pinching my butt and tickling me. And I go like this. They snap the photo. And that's what they use on a billboard. Of course they did. Of course they did. And here's why I knew that. Because I didn't know when the billboards had gone up. When my friend Nikki, she called me.
And she goes, because I hadn't spoken to her in a while. And she goes, just saw your billboard over the freeway. And I was like, yeah. She goes, you look weird. I was like, wait, what? Hello to you too. And she's like, I'm just telling you. You should probably talk to somebody about it. And I've over the years have voiced how much I hate that particular photo shoot. Yeah.
It's funny because here's the thing what I bet it was. Remember we were watching that episode where he says dance dummy. Jake says yeah. And I was like that was not in character. He just wanted to finish. And I bet you that was it. The day was going along. We're doing the big gallery photo shoot. They wanted to be over and they just kept shooting you and you wouldn't smile. And Max is just like I'm going to make it happen. And so they lightly assaulted you.
Yeah, they sometimes get fed up of my shenanigans, but they didn't know where I was coming from. And that's okay. I don't blame them. You know, it's my melanated instincts, which I don't like to have people scream at me and tell me to smile. Understood. Understood. Did you improv the joke about peeing in the ocean? Yes. And would a number two help?
Yeah, no, the peeing part was scripted. I think the number two, the number two with the number two help. That was my joke. Yeah. So the original came from the OG writers on the show, which I think still to this day are the best writers in the business. And then, yeah, I just kind of added to it.
Next question. I love Odette Annabelle's character for Shane in the quick hardening cock episode when she was Nick's manager for guys night. How did that character come about? Was she a fan and wanted to guest star or did she audition for the role from Samantha? That's a good question. I actually don't know the answer to that.
I don't know the answer to that either. So here's what we will do. We will reach out to Odette Annabelle. Sure, yeah. And we will try to get that answer for you. Here's the thing I will say is that, you know, I spoke to Satya Baba, who played Shivrang, and he was, you know, a friend of Liz Merriweather's and an accomplished actor himself. And he auditioned. I feel like they auditioned almost everybody to be on this show. So I wouldn't be surprised if she auditioned.
Yeah, it's hard to say because I think at that time she was on another Fox show. Oh, got you, got you. So maybe it was an offer. Maybe.

Well, here it is. Oscar Mayer takes 12 hours to smoke some delicious thick-cut bacon. Most other bacon out there is smoked for four to six hours, but Oscar Mayer doubles that time. Let's put that into perspective. You could drive from Detroit to Omaha, and Oscar Mayer thick-cut bacon wouldn't be finished smoking. You could spend the morning and all afternoon watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy in full. You could even go to bed, get a full night's sleep, wake up, shower,
shower have breakfast including some delicious oscar meyer bacon and then drive to work and to think that the bacon would still be smoking the point is all of these take at least half a day to complete and oscar meyer takes the best cuts and smokes them over real hardwood chips for a really long time until it tastes really good so buy some oscar meyer thick cut bacon now and enjoy for

Text BVJOBS to 97211 to apply. All right. So who came up with the freshwater bitch fish quote? It's the most quoted line for me. Adrian. I want to say that's scripted. Yeah, for sure. I want to say that's scripted. However, it's hard to tell when Max goes off script when you think about it. But that is indeed in the script. Yeah.
The freshwater bitch fish. He just makes it seem so fluid and loose. The best writer's room. Best writer's room. All of these quotable lines. So funny. I have to say, the quick hardening caulk episode is one of my favorites. Schmidt's obsession with the fish kills me every time, especially compared with Winston's reluctant humoring of him and accompanying him on this journey. Who came up with this storyline? Where did you film the beach scene and how difficult was all of this to do?
Mmm.
Okay, first part of that question. Who came up with the storyline? So this episode was actually written by Ryan Coe and it was directed by the brilliant, beloved Lorraine Scafaria. I love her so much. She's so talented and wonderful. So he's the one who wrote this episode with the help of all the incredible writers that we had that season. And where did you film the beach scene? Were you down in Venice? Venice?
Yeah, no, we were in Santa Monica in this, and we had shot there before, but there was this tiny little area, some little cove-like area that we were filming at. And it didn't feel, it felt janky.
To me, it didn't feel like you were in this. What do you mean janky? Janky, like it was like, it almost felt man-made in a way. But it wasn't. It was almost like, oh, let's just set up a camera here in this random location where this little pool of water is. That's kind of how it felt when we were there on the day. But yeah, we were in Santa Monica and I can't pinpoint the exact longitude latitude, but it was in Santa Monica. But you'd recognize if you were brought back there, you'd be like, I know this spot.
Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. The memories, they come flooding back. The obsession with fish thing that they're talking about in this question also makes me laugh because I think I've told you this. I think I talked about it when we did the recap that I get tagged. I get tagged in so many pictures of lionfish. It's wild. Oh, that's right. Yeah. It's a really funny thing. I just, I get it all the time and it took me a while to figure out why until we did the rewatch and I was like, oh,
And now you know. The CC fish. And now you know. Got it. And now you know. And you kind of look like a... A lionfish. I am a Leo, just like you. There you go. People always call me Lionfish Lamar.
All right, last question. It's a biggie. Hello. I have a question and a story. Feel free to share. Well, we're gonna. Don't know what it's gonna be. We're just gonna get. We beat these cold, by the way. Yeah. It's kind of fun. Relating to this episode, at the end of the episode, when the fish tank gets destroyed, was this real water? Just answer that. Yes, it was. How was the scene filmed with a prop tank? That's what. Yeah. And how many takes did they do in order to get this shot?
I would probably say one, to be my guess. One. So what they would do is before getting to the part where the fish tank breaks...
They will shoot the whole scene over and over and over and over and over again. Up to the point before it breaks. Up until that point. And then what they would also do is sometimes potentially move it out of the way and then shoot from like cowboy, meaning waist up, so you don't see the floor. Just the reactions. Their faces, the dialogue. Right. And then come back with a three camera setup, a wide, a medium. All the angles. Yeah.
All the angles and then let it break. And then you go from there. Because you don't... That cleanup is so aggressive. You don't want to have to do that multiple times because the water goes everywhere. And knowing our crew though, such a... I mean, they think of everything. I'm sure there was some sort of tarp on the ground that when it spilled...
they could easily just kind of pull the corners up and get a bulk of that water out immediately to protect the floors of the set. So I'm assuming that's what happened. More than likely, that's what happened on that day. And it was real water, yes. Real water. Since this episode talks about fish, I thought I would tell you about my five goldfish, Nick, Jess, Winston, Cece, and Schmidt. What?
I've accidentally killed at least 20 fish. Oh, God. In the past. Turn. Dark turn.
So I was not expecting these fish to last for much more than a few months. Fast forward over a year later and me and my husband are planning to move across the country for my grad school. We decided the best way to move the fish was to put them all in a five gallon bucket, throw them in the backseat of my car, sorry, and just hope for the best. After packing up my apartment, we loaded the fish into the bucket and drove to a friend's house this day of the night so we could leave bright and early the next morning. Nick died immediately.
We hadn't even left town yet, but Nick knew he wasn't interested in making the trip before it even started. The rest of the fish made the three-day journey from Utah to Missouri in the middle of the summer. Jess died a few months later because the tank was too dirty, so we cleaned the tank. Then Cece died because it was too clean. The only ones left are Schmidt and Winston, which is funny because, spoiler alert, they both have the same name.
They were a little awkward around each other at first. Also very on brand. But they're best friends now. Thank you so much. I love the show and the podcast. You guys are doing the Lord's work every week. Emily Weichman, Boulevard, Missouri.
That's a great story. That is an epic story. That's an epic story. Just winning and winning. But also I want to talk about, Emily, your parenting skills as far as your fish go. You stuck these fish in a bucket.
Everybody knows that Nick don't do well in no bucket. No. That's why he gave up beforehand. He just looked at the bucket and died. He said, nah, this ain't for me. Here's my time, y'all. And then Jess and then CeCe. Well, it's good to know that the most resilient ones are Schmidt and Winston, which is like real life because I'm a pretty tough guy. And I really appreciate you guys out there acknowledging that. It's been fun for me.
being the tough guy on set. And thank you, Emily, for noticing it. But we're just going to not talk about the 20 previous deaths. We're just going to just keep waltzing over that. Yeah, you don't. Yeah. Maybe fish aren't your thing. Maybe we just leave it with Winnie and Winnie and just after that, maybe move on to more resilient animal.
Well, she's probably leaving out that she probably hunts fish. That's why she's killed at least 20 of them. She's like out there like a fish hunter. It's like a shark hunter. Yeah, Emily, thank you very much. Thank you to everyone who sent in questions, your comments, your remarks. And we love that and we want to encourage you to continue to do so. That is our show.
