Text BVJOBS to 97211 to apply. Ring, ring, ring, ring. May I please speak with Zoe? Oh, hello, Lamorne. Let's patch in Hannah. God, I forgot what it was like working with you guys. Welcome to our show. Welcome to our show. Hello. Hello, everyone. Hey.

Hey, hey, hey, y'all. Welcome to our show. Episode 23, Backslide. This week's episode is all about knowing when to let go. So the roommates, they're in a bit of crisis, right? Jess, she's fresh off her breakup with fancy man Russell. You know, she is deep in a Joni Mitchell River depression. We've all been there. Instead of Joni Mitchell, I use Wu-Tang Clan. But

It's nothing a stiff drink and a little bit of Paul Genslinger cannot cure. Unfortunately, Paul comes with one major string. Mainly, he wants to propose to his girlfriend. Speaking of girlfriends, Nick and Caroline, they seem to be enjoying one another again. Apparently, enough for Caroline to ask Nick to move in with her. Wow, it's going there. The roommates say to test this idea. Winston and Schmidt, they show Nick a little video that he made after Caroline dumped him for the third time.

Pitiful old Nick reminds current Nick of all the ways Caroline tormented him. But all Nick can hear is it's time to grow up. Somebody else is doing some growing as well. Schmidt and Cece. No pun intended, because with his penis still in the cast, you know, Schmidt can't risk being turned on. He can't grow up. But oops.

So he and Cece visit her grandmother at a place that is least likely to turn him on, a retirement home. Now Schmidt, you know, he gets the grandma's approval. And Cece, she realizes in this moment that she wants a serious relationship with Schmidt, broken penis and all. But all that emotional honesty, it turns Schmidt on. And even though he's in tremendous pain, you know, he still goes through with it. All those emotional thoughts. And it hurts him.

Cece falls in love with Schmidt. Genslinger's love hangs in the balance. Jess incensed that Paul would make her a cheater. She demands he tell his girlfriend about his transgressions. Ugly crier Genslinger may also have the snot bubbles like Viola Davis.

Ugly Crier Genslinger, he breaks down and he confesses fear drove him to Jess when he really wants to marry Jen. Now, Jess, after proposing to Jen for Genslinger, reconsiders not just her romantic situation, but Nick's as well. She rushed home to tell Nick he is worthy of love. Love is worth the wait and she'll wait with him. Nick's already signed a new lease with Caroline and he is moving on out. So that's what happened, y'all. Now back to the podcast.

I love this episode. It's a great episode. It really is. And I'd completely forgotten about it. Oh, I remembered a lot of stuff from it, but not the name of the episode. I forgot the whole episode. Oh, yeah. There are moments in this episode that I for sure remember. And when I was rewatching it, just like you, I thought, oh, my God.

My God, this is the episode that's from? Oh, okay. A lot of cool stuff packed into one. It has a strong start. Yeah, that feminist rants are kind of my thing is what has been a meme that I've seen a lot. And I was like, I didn't remember what that was from, but...

Now I do. Now I know. The fact that it just starts with Joni Mitchell. I was already in. I'm like, I love this episode. I'm in. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And who hasn't listened to River a thousand times when they're sad or going through a breakup, you know? I could tell you I haven't. It's actually a perfect song. Oh, you haven't, Lamorne? No, no, I haven't. In fact, when I saw the episode, I had no idea.

Actually, when we were filming the episode, I had no idea who that was. Never heard it before in my life. Really? Really. Not even like a cover version by somebody else? But now you know, and now you listen to it all the time, right? Next time you get sad, put it on. It is. That's about three times a day. That's about three times a day. Also, you're recording right now in Canada, Joni Mitchell.

She's Canadian. Just ran into her. That's why she knows about frozen cold rivers. Yeah, just ran into Joni Mitchell.

She just looked out any window and was just like, yep, this is a song right here. Because those of us from California are like, you can't skate on a river. That's crazy. Dive in, girl. It's not that bad. You swim. Excuse me. So the name of the episode is Backslide, written by David Quant, directed by Nanette Bernstein. Yes.

Now you're putting it together. I'm putting it together. I'm putting it together because Justin Long is in this episode. I remember Justin Long had done the movie with her. That's right. With Drew Barrymore? That's right. Yeah. Did I just say Drew Barrymare? I said something weird. It's Drew Barrymare. You said Drew Barrymare. Horses on the brain. You got horses on the mind. She's famous and I know how to pronounce her name. I know her. It's just because I'm very tired and I can't pronounce things yet.

Yeah, we are taping this. We're reporting this kind of early, early for us. Yeah. I had to get my kids, like, ready for school before this. So that was chaotic. That was chaotic. So let's start from the top. You're listening to River. This is a sad person song, I guess. You know, again, not like me. When you're going through something, is there...

Is there a breakup song that you all actually listen to in your real life? It's called Joni Mitchell, all the songs. Really? Yeah. Yeah. Wouldn't you make a Joni Mitchell playlist if you're kind of sad? Yeah. Wouldn't that be? No, because I'm trying to get over it. Just that whole album. Oh, that whole album is a breakup. She wrote that after, I think it was her breakup with Graham Nash. Oh.

And if you watch her, if you watch like the videos, you can go on YouTube and pull up some like of the, you know, Tony going on, you know, you know, I don't know, not the Ed Sullivan show, but shows like that, you know, doing like kind of music shows on TV. And she looks so sad and she plays the dulcimer on a lot of the songs. And,

You know, you really feel that. You really feel that sadness. Here's the thing. When I watched that cold open and you in that sad vibe, the thing I did remember about this episode, because Schmidt's penis is broken. And so she has to hide her body. And they had had me in these like bodycon dresses and heels.

For so much of this season. And I got to wear flats and hoodies and sweatpants. By the way, you look so good in those. Thank you. I was like, what's funny is I actually like forgot why you were wearing them. Like, I completely forgot. And I was like, I was like, I love this like minimalist look on Hannah. Like,

You know why? Because I was comfortable. Yeah, like you look like my body didn't hurt. You could see it in my face. You look like a vagrant.

You look like the person that you watch when they walk past your house. You just stare at them a little bit to let them know, hey, don't come in here. I feel like I remember Liz Merriweather seeing me just in a sweater and sweatpants. And she's like, this isn't reading. She's trying to hide herself. And so the last second they handed me like, oh, I was going to say a toque, but...

A beanie. It's Canadian for hat. Oh, yeah, Canadian. I'm Canadian. You guys call beanies toques? Yes, a toque. You better text Jonathan right now. He will co-sign the toque. I'm doing it. You won't need a toque when a Chinook comes in. You know what I mean? When you're eating your poutine. Black men don't eat poutine. Ha ha ha.

By the way, you're missing out right now. You're up in Calgary. You better go get some poutine and you better drink a Caesar. Okay? Hell no. How do you spell toque, guys? T-O-U-Q-U-E. Oh, Jesus. Don't you spell it like a...

So much simpler to just say. We got U's and Q's in our hats. Okay. Anyway, I remember Liz saying, you got to, you have to make her look more as the Morn said, like a vagrant. She's got to actually look like she's hiding everything. And so they just like slam this hat on me, like the ribbon hat.

to try to make it look more like I was hiding myself. And I loved it. I was so happy. It looked very like... It actually looked very more contemporary because since obviously these shows are from like 10 years ago, it looked like...

street style now you know what i mean like what what like a cute college student or something would wear thank you i will take right you look great i was happy you're just seeing happiness zoe that's all you're seeing but i remember that scene in the closet so different from the the bodycon wearing cc you like comfort you like travel that's right i know very different

And then when Mary Elizabeth comes in with Jake, when we're sitting there and they do that dance, I'd forgotten about that dance. I laughed out loud on my couch last night.

That was a real committed bit, and it was real funny. I think Jake was twerking a little bit. He was kind of twerking. He was. I will say this. My actually one criticism of this episode is that Mary Elizabeth is underutilized because she's very funny. She's so funny. She's so funny, and I was like, you know, like...

I was like, I wish. Now, it just didn't work for the story. That's why, I'm sure. But she's just so funny. And I'm like, oh, I wish we'd gotten to use a little more of her comic talents. For sure. But she's great. One person we did use a lot more in this episode. Not a lot more than that. But the comeback of Justin Long of Genslinger.

I forgot when they showed that like, just like his arm or whatever. And it's the morning after. And then they kind of pulled out and they were, Lamorne, don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. I didn't say nothing. You said it. You said it. What happened? What did the camera do? What happened? When the camera went wide is what I said. No, okay. What was Lamorne going to say? No.

No, she said when they pulled out. When you guys were in bed. No, Zoe, I can't trust him. Anyway, I literally went, oh, Genslinger. And then Jess just goes, Genslinger. And I was like, I forgot it was him that was your backslide. I did too. And I remembered like the whole thing with Jen and the proposal and stuff. But I didn't realize like...

I completely forgot that this was that episode and the ugly crying. There are lots of classic, um, my favorite part. My favorite part. One of those things that I, that I think about often that I, whenever I see Justin, we talk about it. Um, his inability to say Winston. And so we all have, you know, we have nicknames for each other. I guess, you know, we call them Mercedes Gans, Genzel Washington, um,

It's the gens of the world as we know, stupid stuff like that. And then he goes, he goes, Hey Schmidt. Hey Washington. If you, if you, during that day, I remember Nanette kept asking him to just say Winston and each take one take, he goes out and he goes, Hey Schmidt. Hey Wimbledon. And then the next take, Hey, Hey Schmidt.

Hey, Washington. Hey. And then finally she goes, I just need one. Just one. I remember. One take of Winston. And he goes, got you. One take. And as he's going out, he goes, hey, Schmidt. Hey, Winston's.

and adds an S at the end. I remember that so well. The thing about Justin is if he committed to a bit, it was like trying to pry a bone out of a dog's mouth. It's just not happening. He decided it.

And he's like, yeah, sure. And then the director would say, seriously, man, could you do the thing? And he'd be like, yeah, yeah, absolutely. And then he would just at the last minute. It was like Pratt Falls in the Christmas episode. I remember they were like, please do one where you walk up normally. And he just...

every time and then would just surprise you like every single time. I mean, he has endless ideas. You want to whisper to a director like please don't earnestly ask him to do something different because the moment you're earnest about wanting him to stop a bit, you've just poured gasoline on the flame and now you're never going to get it. I'd say you have a better chance of him saying the real line saying please never say the real line. Yeah, don't do the real line. This is so funny. Just don't do it.

Yeah, this is great. Just definitely don't do it. Don't do it. Because you won't be able to make it as good as these. Also, I got a very good drink suggestion out of this episode that made me laugh, too. What was it? Remember when he said, do you want a Nick Miller Manhattan straight bourbon in a plastic cup? Oh, yeah.

It's very easy. It's very easy to make. I feel like there's a lot of drink and food suggestions that come over the season of New Girl. I'm going to start writing them down. And maybe when we finally get to our series finale, that's what we'll all serve up. And we can all tape that episode together. By the way, Jonathan got back to me. He said he did call them toques growing up.

That's what they're called. If you went to Canada and said you wanted a beanie, you know what they would think a little beanie is probably? One of those little small caps that have like the little spinning propeller on it. That's right. Like a Dennis the Menace. That's what they would give you. And then your ears would be cold. I would like that better, honestly.

Also, we're back in the bar again. This is the original bar. Or had we at this point converted over to the States? It was the original. It was the original because we actually were in...

that Koreatown neighborhood for a few days on this episode. And we didn't get that bar, I think, until season two. But if you notice, the exterior of the apartment they were moving to was actually a building that was just right around the corner from the Prince. Yeah. Yeah. I see. Yeah.

Also something in this episode that I and we talk about this on the show, how I was I season one is just been so bad to me. I don't know. I just that's your lens on it. Your lens. This my lens. I mean, it's great for the fans and people love it. I overanalyze myself and some of the bits that I had to do and how.

Maybe I didn't capitalize on the bits or maybe I just didn't find them interesting or maybe they were just weird. I don't know what it was. But this earring thing, I was like, what the fuck am I doing? My character had a... So I've never had my ears pierced.

And so I want to say the suggestion was, hey, Lamorne, are you willing to get your ears pierced for this? No. Yeah. They did not say that. Yes. They've got clip-ons and ways to fake it. No. Yeah. So we used a magnet. We used a magnet earring, which if I find the photo, I'll post on my Instagram. When I was younger, I went and had a magnet earring because I wanted to be cool, but I was not cool enough to get my ears pierced. I was too scared to do it.

So in this episode, I have a big diamond earring. Then I have a loop earring. Then I have a... They call it a hoop. A feather. A hoop. A hoop. Yeah. Not a loop. A feather. A loop. I don't wear earrings. Okay? I don't know the jargon. Confirmed. But you know women who wear earrings and maybe some men who wear earrings that...

No, when I look at women, I don't look at that. Okay, I'm not objectifying them by their loop earrings. Okay, I'm looking into their eyes. There it is. And their souls, not the jewelry. Okay. So can I ask you a question? Do you remember if props or costumes was responsible for picking those earrings?

It's got to be props, I want to say. But, you know, ultimately that would be... There was overlap a lot of times with certain things, like certain things like props would take and certain things. But it felt like it had been props written all over that feather earring. I mean, the peacock feather was like, this is...

I mean, I feel like that could have come from... We had an amazing... Yeah. I'm just going to blame Dallas on that. Dallas gave you a peacock earring. Lamorne, I think this is going to be great. I think it's funny. I think it's a feather. Oh, thanks, Dallas. Yeah. So anyway, that's just another example of some of my...

here's my bad taste in my mouth from from this season here's my question this is what i thought when i was re-watching it i thought it was funny by the way you were very funny you were very funny but here's the thing i was like i bet you lamorne's gonna talk about this on the podcast tomorrow is you are sensitive to anything that can be mildly painful and sometimes those clip-on earrings

can pinch a little or were they for you uncomfortable or did they hurt a little bit no i'm being serious because i've worn clip-on earrings before ask zoe when you wear clip-on earrings they could be heavy and pull and they pinch so i don't like them that's right that's why most people get their ears pierced and so then it kind of like fits a little better so you know i'm not but should we talk about lamorne's pain threshold uh yeah you know i'm not susceptible to pain i

I don't, my pain threshold is high. Maybe in the first episode of next season? No. It's a big topic. I could give birth to a child right now and be fine. Okay? Oh.

The ladies on this podcast are going to giggle now. I can get a tattoo on my eyeball and be fine. No way. I'll have to burn this place down. I'm strong, ladies. What's all the big deal about? I'd love to test it. We're asking if you could handle a clip-on earring is the question. I can handle. I'm not going to lie to you. The first time I put that magnet, that magnet had a little pinch to it. That's what I'm saying. I know you well enough.

But if you know me, if all the fans out there, if you know me, you know that I use that pain as motivation to really get the job done. This is a man who sprained his wrist getting up from a couch. That's right. No, I dislocated my thumb. I dislocated my thumb getting up from the couch. Dislocated his thumb getting up from the couch. I can't control what my bones do. Okay. I guess we can't. That's on my bones. Yeah.

Plowing ahead. When we come back from this little break, I want to talk about the other huge casting that happened on this show that made me cry.

And we're back.

How was the break for you guys? Great. I had some coffee. Yeah? Okay, nice. You had a coffee break. So, the casting that made me cry. So I remember it was the day before we were going to shoot the, what would you call it now? The old folks home scene. Yes. Where Cece goes to visit her grandma. Retirement community. The retirement community scene? Yes. Where did you shoot that?

Is that on stage? Yeah, I think they built a little stage for it. Built a stage. They built a set on a stage for it. And...

It was the day before and I went over. Liz was there sitting in Video Village and Love happened to be there and there was just a bunch of people hanging out. And I think Liz or Brett or Dave, somebody was like, oh, we've cast your grandma. And I was like, oh, who? They're like, don't worry. You know, she's some actress in New York. Apparently she's very good. And I was like, all right. They're like Madhur something. And both love Raquel and I went,

are you, wait, are you saying mother Joffrey? And they're like, yeah, I think that's who it is. We're like, and I started crying and love freaked out. And they were like, why is she like a, like a, an icon? She's like a living legend. She's just incredible.

phenomenal actress at all these Merchant Ivory movies, but she's also like our Julia Child. She's like this incredible chef with the best cookbooks ever. Everybody, at least in our community, really knows her. And worldwide, she's known. So we had a living legend on the show. And you weren't talking about me. We weren't talking about you. And for once, we weren't talking about Lamorne. I know.

And I had this moment because I was like, oh, I can't believe I'm going to meet her tomorrow. This is so exciting. She's like my grandmother. I can't get over it. And then I went, oh, no. Oh, my gosh. I remembered what the scene was. I have to spend my time finally meeting this incredible woman talking about a broken dick.

And I was like, this is, and then culturally too in India, I'm like, I don't know how in front of Mother Joffrey, this is all inappropriate. I'm like, you guys have to rewrite this whole scene and we could just talk about something a little more respectful. I was like, this is crazy. I don't know how to do this in front of Mother Joffrey. She read the script.

She was fine. This is my own personal meltdown. So the day comes, the next day comes, I actually, you see me, I'm wearing like a cameo necklace that my grandma gave me because it was a scene about my grandma. So I wanted her to kind of be with me for that day. So I wore that necklace and I show up to meet Mother Joffrey. And I was like, oh gosh, this is a whole thing about a broken penis. And she laughed. And somebody then

showed me with her there a um she did some like crazy uh like rap she got bars yes that was so vile and disgusting and hysterical and i was like oh this is like a pg scene for you compared to um all the crazy fun stuff she's awesome and up for anything

Anyway, it was really great. I can't believe that we got so lucky to have her on the show and she agreed to do such a silly bit for us. For anybody who's out there who's really good with editing, can you make a video of Mata Joffrey with Lil Baby in the background? Or have her lip-syncing to Lil Baby? Yeah.

Yeah, I got to find that YouTube video of her doing this rap because it's so funny. I'm going to send it to you guys and made me feel ridiculous for being concerned about a woman who can make her very own grown-up choices.

I had no idea. Yeah. I had no idea. This is the scene, by the way. I mean, I knew about her, obviously. Because you made it, I remember when it happened, you made such a big deal about it. You were running around like, it was almost like it was Christmas and you were tapping everyone on the shoulder going, look up, it's snowing, it's Christmas. You just, everyone knew about it.

Well, because it was the scene. You remember when Kobe showed up to the set? When Kobe showed up to the set, that was my feeling when I knew Mother Joffrey. That's how I felt, too. So I was like, you guys know who's coming? She's going to be here. It was very exciting. Pretty amazing. This was also the scene, and poor Nanette Bernstein had to watch

me lose my mind because Schmidt had to do that crazy when Harry met Sally kind of scream meltdown guttural sounds that caught me off guard and made me laugh and fall under the desk and cry my lashes off and all my makeup off and they had to just keep resetting and I couldn't stop laughing and poor our poor director was like could you please just like hold your shit together for one take but Max got me every time

That's why you got a clean single. That's right. That's right. Zoe knows. Now, in this episode, and this is something that I've had to do before, or kind of like a decision that in my real life I've had to do before. Nick and Caroline, they go apartment hunting.

Now, now I, I personally know, like I was always afraid to do that. I was always afraid to move in with my significant other. I once lived with an ex for about four months and that put my house hunt on level 10. Like I was living, I said, okay, I got to find, I got to find another place to go.

Now, for you all, did you find that once you do that move in, it's a lot harder to make rational decisions based on your relationship? Or are you now, this is it. I'm here now. I'm willing to take on more. I'm willing to deal with more, even if I'm not feeling it because we live together. Is that something? Because that's what Nick is going through in this moment. He's not sure if he should be with her, but...

She asked him to move in and, you know, now he's kind of, you know, he's kind of stuck.

uh yeah it's definitely not something you want to do if you're unsure about a person uh it's it's a lot of closeness i think a lot of people do like the one foot in before they like you know make the full two-step in like you find a place together and then you just you know you have your place just for an extra month just in case

In case you got to go back to your place. You like have toothbrushes, you know, at. That's right. That's enough. You can float back and forth. For Nick and Carolou, that's enough. Carolee. Carolee. Carolee. Carolee. Carolina. Carolina.

I also found it very interesting that she lied about her age, even though it was just three years. It's still, I forgot about that. I forgot this episode. It's funny. It's like 33. It's like, wait, she's like, I lied about that. Yeah. That was very funny. So here we, we haven't gotten into, uh, the, uh, Genslinger marriage proposal yet. Um,

Oh, wow. Which is, I mean, this is a massive, like, Genslinger cheats on his girlfriend with Jess and then reveals that he wants to propose. And Jen, his girlfriend, who is like Jess's twin, laughs.

It basically has like... She was really good, that actress. Her name is Melissa Tang and she was really great. And I love... They go through like a myriad of emotions because first...

And Jess decides to tell her that Genslinger cheated. She takes in that information. She's going to leave. But then he ends up proposing to her. So she just spans the gamut of emotions. And I thought that was – she did a great job. And Justin, of course, did a great job navigating all those emotions.

Did he make up her name? I'm sorry. It was Jen. But at one point he calls her Jennifer Ruth Toyoji. Yes. And I was like, why do I feel like he made that up?

It does feel like something he made up, but it was definitely written in the script. Yeah. Yeah, Jennifer Ruth Toyoji was a good, very good name. And yeah, anyway, I thought she was great and Justin was great. But of course, I think for Jess, it's like, you know what I was actually thinking? I couldn't believe how mean I was to him about his ugly crying. Yeah.

Yeah, you were pretty. Why did I yell at him about it? You were so mean to him about it. They did a montage of it in the episode. Yeah, I was like, I was like, dang, like I was like, why? Like, it's clearly triggering for Jess. Like it triggers something from childhood because like she's irrationally.

mad at him for how he looks when he's crying which like he can't help you know but I love a good ugly cry though yeah exactly that was shocking that was shocking it was shocking yeah out of character um now there are people who can cry pretty well

And look good doing it. Viola Davis is not one of them, though. Viola Davis. She's always got snot coming out of her nose. One of the great actors of her generation. Okay. Keep going. She's in my top five all time. I love her. Oh, yeah. She's definitely in mine, too. But there's always a snot bubble that comes out of her nose. Every time. I was like, if that snot bubble didn't come out. Well, I love it, actually, because it's real. Like, I think...

A lot of times people look too pretty when they cry and like, do people really look like that in real life? Like when you see like somebody on screen who looks like completely pristine while they're crying, they just have like tears running, running down their face. Like I've done it as an actor. Believe me, you and me, I'm like, I don't want to ruin, I don't want to deal with like hair and makeup coming and fixing me like nonstop. But yeah,

But like Viola Davis is a really good actor. Oh, yeah. And that's what makes it real. She commits. That is what makes it real. But the snot, I'm always like, damn, she got another sinus infection? Like Viola. Hey, you got to get that taken care of. No self-consciousness.

Not at all. Which I love. I love it. That's not. Bring me more. She has a new movie out, everybody. Go see it. Woman King. Woman King. Everybody see it. Fantastic. Woman King. Go see it unless you're a five-year-old or something. And you're probably not old enough. I just need to add one thing about the proposal scene when I was watching it. I have to say, Zoe.

Yes. Incredible in that scene. Thank you. It's this moment right between between Jen and Paul. I get it. The proposal and they're doing such a great job and it's so funny. But when you're shoving the engagement ring and you never it was just amazing. You never broke eye contact.

with Jen. You're just like, here. And you never look at Paul, which I think, by the way, is appropriate. You guys had just been together. You know what I mean? I don't know. The way you played that scene was so great. And then it kind of slid into the scene with Jake Johnson where you do that beautiful speech at the end that then feels so heartbreaking when he's just like, kind of shrugs it off and walks away. Ooh, haven't you been there before? Like in that moment where you kind of are vulnerable in front of somebody and then they're like,

Yeah, like, oh, no big deal or whatever. And they don't, they kind of respond like that with no emotion. And you're like, how did I give you so much emotion and you gave me nothing?

Yes, I was. I mean, it was really beautiful. Those two scenes, one where you almost say nothing and then the other where you say everything. But they both had the same like weight of delivery and you really felt it. And I just thought it was like really beautiful. Thank you so much. I really appreciate that. I was pissed when you didn't win the Emmy because I was waiting for you to go up there and

And start crying when you give your speech so I can anticipate that snot bubble coming out. You never get to see it. That's when you truly understand. Yeah.

Future Emmy. Future Emmy. Future... I got nominated that year for an Emmy and then got nominated for Golden Globes. But, you know, I never got to win. I did win a Critics' Choice. Critics' Choice? Yeah, Critics' Choice, which was really cool. And I was not at all expecting it. I had no speech planned. And I went up and...

Just rambled. So there you go. But I probably ugly cried a little bit. Speaking of rambling and backsliding, we should slide all into True American, everybody. Let's go. Why don't we hear some ads, everybody, of some wonderful products that you're going to love. Oh.

True American. Welcome to True American, where the rules change weekly and you leave more confused than when you showed up. This week, we're playing Martha Stewart Weddings. Jen and Paul cannot ever tell anyone the story of how they got engaged. Ain't that the truth? Her friends wouldn't let her go through with the marriage and his family would disown him for the shame of it. That's right. We're each going to make up a story they call their loved ones. And you guys can vote for the best one on IG. Okay.

All right. Well, challenge accepted. I guess we're all going to have to do this separately. Cool.

Music teacher Paul Genslinger and flautist Jennifer Ruth Toyoji got engaged last Thursday after a whirlwind romance in the school where they met. The lucky fella popped out of a cello case with a one-carat diamond ring, causing Jennifer, a woman of delicate constitution, to faint. Luckily, seventh grade teacher Jessica Day, a bystander, just happened to be there to catch the fall. Talk about a lucky break.

Both were crying from joy and relief that Jen was not injured. Paul was so nervous to propose that Ms. Day had to swoop in and help with the proposal. Luckily, she teaches poetry in her classroom and words come easily to her. What a funny coincidence they all just happened to be there together. And what a memorable proposal that definitely and totally had nothing weird or shameful about it. 100% above board.

This is the story of how Paul proposed to Jen. Paul knew that Jen loved polka dots and feminist rants. Much like someone else he had cared for in his past. So he knew the person very well, their likes and dislikes, because Paul had a type. So he calls his parents and it kind of goes like this. Hi, Dad. Hi.

So I have some really big news to tell you. It's really exciting. You know Jen. I love her so much. I love her more than anyone else in the entire world. So I took her to a cat cafe full of little kittens that all need adoption.

And we sat there and she cried that beautiful, ugly cry of hers. And I cried that beautiful, ugly cry of mine. And watching her with those kittens, let me know that she would be an incredible mother. And I knew I had made the right choice. And then we hear a gasp from his parents. And so right there, surrounded by fluffy little baby cats, I got down on one knee and said, Jen, will you marry me?

And she said, of course. And then she just started sneezing nonstop. And I realized that she was allergic to cats and I'd never clocked it. So it was okay, mom and dad. She'd said yes. We put the ring on the finger and we got out of there. And now we have such a fun story of how we got engaged at the cat cafe. It did make us realize though, that we wanted something little to care for. No cats.

She isn't pregnant. We actually went to the rescue center and adopted a puppy. So you're going to get a daughter-in-law and a little puppy grandbaby. I think that's the story that he would tell. I think that's how he got engaged. So you still have like something fun and cute that went wrong, but it's not...

I slept with my ex and then my ex helped me propose. Because that's a terrible story, you guys. But you still want something cute and fun that went wrong. And the allergic to cats. That's their cute little moment that they'll remember forever. But also for never because it didn't happen like that because Paul made a big mistake. That's my pitch. Got engaged in a cat cafe.

Well, clearly the real way Paul and Jen became engaged is very problematic. They wouldn't be able to tell the family that Paul was out here cheating, just throwing the D around like that, all willy-nilly, no pun intended, just slinging it, you know? And he shouldn't have been. He should have kept that in his pants. You know, you break that out when you're at home. Shame on him. But he can't tell his family, his friends that, so...

You know, I think the story they go with is very clear. You know, one day, Jen, Jen was out. She was at a restaurant. Joey's Joey's in Woodland Hills. Love the place. And, you know, while she's sitting down, she's she's trying to enjoy her steak and ravioli. Bianco, if you if you if you if you never had it, go to you got to go and try it. This is I love this restaurant. You know, I want to I want to own one one day.

Um, so if y'all listening, Joey's, I want to own one, but she's sitting down and she's just, you know, she's kind of, um, just basking in the ambience of being solo. She loves this. This is a thing for her. She loves being alone. And obviously Paul is there, you know, he's across the room. He too enjoys the ambience of being alone. He's at the bar, he ordered himself a Midori Sour.

He turns around and right when he starts to walk in typical Genslinger fashion, he trips over absolutely nothing. And the Midori Sour goes flying over Jen. My, my. Now, what some people might call a terrible freak of an accident, we call fate because Jen's drink of choice is a Midori Sour. Paul happens to be the clumsiest man on earth.

That Midori sour, most of it goes right into Jen's mouth. And she enjoys it. She wipes her glasses off. She stands up. And to her surprise, there is Paul Ganslinger. And they go home. They do it. They do it again. Do stuff. And it's like love. And then Paul gets down on one knee. The one there at the top of Mount Everest. And he proposes. She says yes.

And they ski all the way down. Well, that wraps it up for True American. Hannah and Lamorne, love you guys. Listeners at home,
