Since they tuned into the middle of the Mercury Theater on the Air, playing their dramatization of H.G Wells The War of the Worlds. Though announced properly, many people then were into the habit of channel surfing when their shows went to commercial, and so the show in progress was mistaken for an actual alien encounter.
