President Yoon declared martial law, claiming the opposition-controlled National Assembly had become a den of criminals and a legislative dictatorship. However, after six hours, following widespread protests and parliamentary opposition, Yoon reversed course and lifted martial law.
Yoon faces potential impeachment due to his controversial declaration and subsequent rescinding of martial law. The opposition has submitted a bill calling for his impeachment, and the main opposition Democratic Party has begun formalizing treason charges against him.
For impeachment, more than two-thirds of lawmakers (200 out of 300) must vote in favor. With Yoon's party controlling 108 seats, at least eight ruling party lawmakers would need to support the impeachment for it to succeed. If successful, a trial would be held by the Constitutional Court.
Pete Hegseth, Trump's current pick for Defense Secretary, is facing intense scrutiny over sexual assault allegations, financial mismanagement, and repeated intoxication and infidelity. He is also considered inexperienced for the position, leading to significant opposition in the Senate, particularly among Republican women.
The French government is facing a vote of no confidence due to Prime Minister Michel Barnier's use of Article 49.3 of the French Constitution to pass a budget without parliamentary approval. The left-wing party La France Insoumise and the far-right National Rally have tabled the motion, and Barnier is expected to lose the vote.
Namibia elected its first female president, Nandine Daitwa of the South West Africa People's Organisation, who secured over 57% of the vote. The election faced significant logistical issues, leading to a three-day polling extension in some areas. Her nearest rival, Panduleni Itula, garnered 26% and has criticized the electoral process as deeply flawed.
