Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Cube. Mat starts things off with an interview with novelist and comic book writer Kevin Given of Karl Vincent: Vampire Hunter fame). They talk vampire movie franchises like The Lost Boys, different incarnations of Dracula on the silver screen, and how the original Dark Shadows TV series was ahead of its time.

Cube is a Canadian sci-fi indie darling that garnered critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Inspired by an idea director Vincenzo Natali had while in college, it re-uses one practical set through invententive lighting and shot composition. A handful of people including cop Quentin (Maurice Dean Wint) and medic Dr. Holloway (Nicky Guadagni) wake up in a metallic room full of arcane symbols. They soon realize they are in a cube of indeterminate size. Some rooms have traps, others don't. Not everyone will survive.

A mixture of horror, drama, and science-fiction, Cube elevates a dry script and flat acting with its innovative premise. Inspiring elements of both the Saw and Resident Evil movies, Cube stretches its budget with enough clever world building that there's still a sense of wonder. It becomes a bit more typical the closer it reaches its climax, but this is an entertaining movie that gives viewers a lot to think about.

Mat has been enjoying the quasi-autobiographical novel Green Shadows White Whale by Ray Bradbury describing his experiences making the 1956 film Moby Dick in Ireland with director John Huston. Thrasher caught up with Solo: A Star Wars Story and found it to be a fun swashbuckling adventure in a galaxy far, far away.
