I think I'm just happy that it's finally warm outside. It has been warm. Which is amazing because I got so sick of the cold. We've been riding bikes. We've been walking. I bought an electric bike from this company called Super 73. If you don't know what it is, you can check it out. It's not a sponsor. I'm just letting you know what...

What we've been doing, what we've been doing, what company we bought the bike from. It's a super fun. It's just an electric bike. And so we've been riding that around. I've been grilling more. Gosh, you know, it's like sometimes I cook really good and I'm like, oh, my gosh, I'm the best griller around town. And at times I grow and I'm like, I suck at this. So I don't know. You know, I'm just dealing with that.

Just a battle in between my head with that. But I was going to say about the bikes. We share, like I can ride on the back of the bike. So we just both double up on there and then we just ride around. Nothing about my cooking?

You know, he's grilled twice and they've both been really good. Thank you. Thank you. Also something else, Peyton and I have been going to Raising Cane's a lot. I don't know how many of you, I assume everyone knows what Raising Cane's is, but I know that there's parts of the U.S. that probably doesn't have Raising Cane's.

Yeah, I would assume so. I would assume it's not. We just barely got it. That's true. We did just barely get it. Anyways, we've been craving it. Yeah, we have been. It's actually good. I used to be like Chick-fil-A is the best, but I don't think you can compare them. I don't love when people play the comparison game for food unless it's like the exact same food. And I get it. It's both chicken, but I don't know. It just doesn't feel the same. Yeah, so Raising Cane's is amazing. If you're Raising Cane's fans, then...

I like you because it's actually really, really good. Haven't done anything else to my truck. And the last thing I will talk about is so Peyton and I were in Denver a couple of weeks ago now. Yep. And we didn't tell anybody why we were out there. I

Do we want to say like exactly why we were there or? Yeah, yeah. Peyton and I actually went out there to collab with some other podcasters slash YouTubers. It was Kendall and Josh from Mile Higher or you might know Kendall Ray from her YouTube channel.

and we went out to do some bonus episodes with them, and it was so fun. We got to meet them. We got to talk to them. Sadly, there was some family emergencies, and we didn't actually get to record any content with them, but rest assured, we will be doing that soon. We are going to meet up again, but they were just great.

so awesome and so fun and like also being a true crime fan for as long as I have been and Kendall Ray doing YouTube for as long as she has in the true crime space it was definitely surreal I felt like a true crime fan meeting someone you know that I've listened to for so long and so it was just so fun to like get to meet them they're so awesome they have built this just incredible

machine and they're huge. So if you haven't checked them out, their podcast is called Mile Higher and yeah, they're a husband and wife duo. We really love them. So you could, you should go listen to their show if you haven't. Anyway, so that's why we were in Denver, but we did get to eat at some good places and we also went to the aquarium. Yep. We did go to the

There was two tigers and I've never felt more like a kid in my entire life. Yeah, we watched those tigers. Oh my gosh, those tigers were amazing. Yeah, they were so fun. I was just sitting there just taking videos of them and... Yeah, our camera roll is just full of tiger videos. Oh yeah, it was crazy. I would never like get in there or touch them or play with them or anything, but... Oh, so you're not Joe Exotic. I'm not Joe Exotic, but...

Man, I mean, it did seem a little tempting, but those tigers were super cool. Anyways, that is my 10 seconds slash 10 minutes slash all the time I need. So let's hop in it. All right. So our case sources for this week are lawandcrime.com, WMTV, NBC15.com, WQOW.com, WKOW.com, heavy.com,

channel3000.com, wbay.com, hngnews.com, tributearchive.com, madisoncollege.edu, Google Maps, LinkedIn, and Redfin. And that is it for the case sources. I always feel like when I'm telling them, people are probably just like, well, that's random. Well, that's random. But again, like I said, we link them so you can know exactly why I was on this certain source.

So just recently, actually, Garrett's hometown neighborhood, in Garrett's hometown neighborhood, there was a swarm of cop cars, police tape, roads closed, and helicopters flying above. And Garrett's sister actually FaceTimed me while it was happening and said,

I'm not a professional, but I've told enough stories now to know that all of this happening in the neighborhood most likely meant there was a death of some kind. If they were shutting roads down, the helicopters were flying and everything. So I quickly began scouring the internet and finally found an article for Garrett's family to explain what had happened.

three dead in a family home discovered after over a year before anybody found them and i know how does no one notice for a year apparently all of their family maybe lived overseas or something and everything was just kind of on auto renew neighbors didn't smell anything and it took a long time for the family members that were long distance to ask police for help uh report

Reports are still low. There's honestly not enough information to even know what happened. But from the sounds of it, it kind of felt like maybe a possible murder-suicide. Maybe, you know, one had killed the other two and then taken their own life type thing. So now I know we've heard of murder-suicides before, obviously. But usually coming from a parent, like usually the parent is the one who murders, one of the parents murders the whole family and then takes their own life. Right.

So if the roles are reversed and it's a child who takes the life of parents, I actually feel like normally when we hear this story, they are eliminating the thing that's standing in their way and then just attempt to continue on with their own life. They usually don't end up taking their own life. They just end up killing their parents or killing whoever's standing in their way and then go on like nothing happened. Yeah.

And that is the kind of story we will be covering today. This is the case of Krista and Bart Halderson. So this week's episode surrounds a family, like I said, the Halderson family, which consisted of mom, Krista, dad, Bart, their oldest son, Mitchell, and their other son, Chandler.

Krista Rae Halderson was born on January 25th, 1968 in Madison, Wisconsin. She was born to Andrew and Betty Frater. Now Krista graduated from Madison East High School in 1986 and then went on to earn her bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Bart A. Halderson, the dad, was born on May 14, 1971 in Wisconsin to Blake and Cale Halderson. Bart graduated from Balders High School in 1989 and then earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison after studying accounting in 1993.

So Kristen Barr, after meeting, which I would assume was in college, considering they both graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, were married on July 30th, 1994. Two years after marriage, they welcomed their first boy into the family, Mitchell Halderson, around September 1996.

Then two years later on March 15th, 1998, Chandler M. Halderson was born in Wisconsin to the Halderson family. And around this time, they actually lived in Dane County, Wisconsin. But when the boys reached elementary school age, the whole family moved to Plymouth, Wisconsin. For Garrett, that is roughly two hours away. I looked.

So Krista Halderson was a stay-at-home mom raising the two boys. And as they got older, she then took a job as a receptionist at a car company because she, you know, was spending less time being a mom. During this time, according to Bart's Facebook page, he says that he's a tax manager at BDO USA. Essentially, he was an accountant who worked on taxes for small businesses. That's what he did.

According to Michael, the oldest brother, during high school, Bart, the boy's father, actually worked a lot and was kind of like slightly absent from the family a little bit. Like he was just gone at work.

Wasn't as involved as Krista was. And we've actually been rewatching Stranger Things, Garrett and I have. And something that we've noticed is how absent they make most of the middle class family dad scene in the movie. Like all of the kids' dads are like completely aloof and absent during all of this. And I know this is on purpose because this was your stereotypical family. They just put on a happy face, a perfect face.

But I think it's funny that this is also now happening in this story and it's around similar time period. So Mitchell described his mom at the time as the complete opposite of his dad, almost the helicopter parent, which again, we see in Stranger Things as well. The moms are like super involved, like caring about everything. According to Krista's friends and family, she was a doting mother whose life truly revolved around her two boys. Like everything she did was for them.

Eventually, as the kids graduated high school, at some point, the Halderson family, who were living in Plymouth, then returned back to Dane County, where they had originally been from, and lived in a home in DeForest, Wisconsin. Now, Dane County, Wisconsin, encompasses the city of Madison, which is the state capital. And as of the 2020 census, the population of Dane County was listed at over 560,000 people. Wow.

DeForest is listed as a village within Dane County, Wisconsin, with a population of around 10,800, according to the 2020 census. So it's basically a suburb north of Madison that sits along the Yahara River. So just so we can kind of get, you know, a good view of what the city they're living in is.

According to Google Maps, the distance from DeForest to the center of Madison is 15 to 18 miles. So I think of it kind of just like neighboring cities and they're just in one of these.

Mitchell had moved out on his own at this point because he's the older brother. So it's just Bart, Krista and Chandler, the youngest brother in the, in the DeForest home, which sat on Oak Springs circle road. All right. So how old is Chandler? The one that lives with the parents and then how old is Mitchell? The one who's moved away. Mitchell, the older one who's moved away is like going through college. So he's definitely like, it's normal for him to be living away from the family.

Chandler at this point is graduated from high school because that's why they moved back. So 18? Yes. Yeah, 18, 19. But he's still living with the family at this point. And did he have any plans at this point to go to college? Yes, he's going to go to a nearby college, which is why he can still live with the family. Okay.

So this family home, according to Redfin, the Halderson home that they had just moved into, was a four-bedroom, two-bathroom house sitting around 2,324 square feet. It has a back deck that looks out onto a large grassy yard and a pond directly behind the property. And this home actually just sold for $295,000 in May of 2022. So just recently. Yeah, yeah.

According to reports in 2018, Chandler, the youngest son, was attending Madison College while living at home. Like I just said, his mother was working a front desk job and his father was doing accounting just as they always been.

Madison College or Madison Area Technical College is a technical college with over 180 training programs and with transfer pathways for students to be accepted to four-year universities. Madison's programs take anywhere from one semester to two years to complete.

no degree that would take longer than two years because the main objective is to go here and then eventually go on to a four-year college. So Chandler first enrolled in 2018 and during his time at college, he had told his parents about

All of his achievements that was happening while he was going to this two-year college, even showing them emails from Madison College staff to prove how well he was doing. He had won awards while studying in the solar program and had even just recently been accepted onto the police scuba diving team.

Chandler Halderson stood at 5'10 and was 150 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. So around 2021, Chandler got a girlfriend named Catherine who he told actually about his future plans after college. He had a job lined up at SpaceX in Florida. Oh, that's sick. That he was super excited about. Everything seemed to be going well for not only Chandler,

only Chandler, but also Bart and Krista by 2021. You know, they were soon to be empty nesters. Like life was going well. But like I said, it only seemed to be.

On Wednesday, July 7th, 2021, around 1125 a.m., now 23-year-old Chandler Halderson walks into the Dane County Police Station. He reports his parents missing to the Dane County Sheriff's Office, 53-year-old Bart Halderson and 50-year-old Krista Halderson. Okay. Which is interesting because...

I feel like it would take a lot for me to report my parents missing. I could be wrong. Not if you were living with them. True. Because at this point he still is. Yeah, I guess so. I don't know. I guess I'm just trying to think like, what would it take for me to actually go in? Like it'd probably take four or five, four to five days. So Chandler tells police that he lived with his parents in the village in Dane County, but he hadn't seen both of his parents since they left the house on Friday morning, July 2nd, 5pm.

Five days earlier. Okay. So it's about right. Right. He claimed that his parents had gone with another couple that he didn't know to visit their family cabin in Langlade County for the 4th of July weekend. He said the other couple picked them up around 6 a.m. and that his parents were, according to the criminal complaint, quote, going to be going up to the cabin to work on a water pump and a fire pit, which had possibly been damaged by a recent storm, end quote.

This cabin is located in White Lake, which is just a few hours north of the Halderson family home. Chandler told police that his parents never came home. He

He said his mom texted him that they had arrived safely and also texted him on the 4th of July, but he hadn't heard from her since. When asked by the police why he thought his parents were missing, Chandler said, well, they were supposed to be back by Sunday night or Monday, which would have been the 5th, and that they still hadn't returned. I'm just trying to figure out what Mitchell thinks about all this. The older brother? Yes, in the middle of this, like...

Well, I mean, he's out of the house, but he's aware that the parents are missing. And so he's definitely like, well, where are they? What's going on? Okay, let me guess. Chandler said that he had been trying to call his parents since then, but his calls were going straight to voicemail. When an officer tried Bart and Krista's cell phones, those calls also went to voicemail as well. When police hear all of this, they decide the first step would be to head out to the Halderson family home.

And this is all according to Heavy.com.

So they walk in and they're like, well, there's sections of the floor missing. There's pieces of the wall missing. Like what? What's going on? What's going on here? Police asked Chandler if there were any guns in the home and Chandler said no, but he thought there was a hunting rifle at the cabin that his parents had gone to.

Chandler said his parents had been planning to do some work at the cabin and that he helped them pack up some tools the night before, including a hatchet, some gas cans for the chainsaw and a pipe wrench. He said his mom texted him on Sunday, July 4th, and said that they were going to White Lake for a parade. And that was the last you'd heard from her. Again, he's reiterating this to police.

Has the police said anything at this point about his behavior? Like, is it weird? Is it strange at all? Or is it just pretty normal? Well, not at this point because they're just barely going to the home. They've just barely received this report. So they're still trying to fill out what's going on. Has there been any like interrogations yet? No, no. Because they're only just now at the house. Got it.

The Dane County Sheriff's Department contacted law enforcement authorities in Langlade County where the family cabin is located. Because they're like, well, if he's saying they went up there, then we should probably contact police up there. Langlade County Police checked the cabin and found that no one was there. So they knock. They're like, no one's answering. No one's home. The police found that both parents' cars were in the garage at their home. And they were like, what?

So is this not weird that someone that they left the morning, but both of their cars are here? And Chandler said, no. I mean, like I said, that couple that I don't know came and picked them up. Oh, come on. And he says, I've driven both of the cars since they left, but he hadn't driven them far. He's like, these have mainly just stayed here. He mentions that he's had,

a concussion in the last couple days and so that's why he didn't drive the cars very far because he wasn't supposed to i feel like at his age i knew most of the couples in my family's life right i mean granted i mean they can make new friends yeah but i don't think very often i was like oh they're with that couple i don't know anything about them well and especially with him living at the same home i mean i feel like if you're living far away it's like your parents can make friends and you don't know or if you're in no contact with your parents then you wouldn't know but he's living in their home you know

So it's kind of around this point where he's like, oh, I had a concussion and I drove the cars, but I didn't drive them very far. The police are like starting to do the whole thing you were just saying, which is like noticing the kind of, he's constantly reiterating what he was doing. And they also noticed that he has some bruises and some scratches on his legs that they can see. Apparently the deputies decide at this point to interview Chandler at the house. They're like, okay, we're going to kind of like take him over here in this corner and interview him. And this is July 7th.

He allowed deputies to look through his cell phone at this point because they asked primarily so they could see the text on July 4th that he got from his mother. But when they were looking through his phone, they noticed many calls coming in from, okay, keep up with me here, his girlfriend's mother's girlfriend. Okay. Okay. So does that make sense? Because I'm going to keep using that term. So I just want you to clarify who that is now. Girlfriend's mother's girlfriend. Yes. Yes.

So when police question this, they're like, hey, so who's this that you keep calling? And he's like, oh, that's my girlfriend's mother's girlfriend. And they're like, okay, well, why do you keep calling her? He tells deputies that his girlfriend and her family actually had a farm in Cottage Grove and

And that's why that like he was just talking to his girlfriend's mother's girlfriend about that cottage up there or this farm up there. Are you just trying to keep her name out of this? Yes. Yes. I just don't always want to name people if you know, because this is still tragedy and traumatic. So if it's not like they've spoken out on the issue, I don't necessarily want to name them.

So Chandler also said he helped his parents pack for their trip to the cabin. He's saying this again, that he, that morning, he didn't hear his parents leave, but when he woke up at 6:15 AM on July 2nd, they were gone. So he's like, I didn't even hear him leave, but when I woke up, they were gone.

He said the door leading from the basement to the driveway was closed but not locked. So that's just what he figured they had used. He said it's normally locked, but that his parents could have kept it unlocked when they left for the cabin. Chandler said his mother texted him at about 11 a.m. on July 4th saying, again, that they were going to the parade and that they'd be home Monday night or Tuesday. He said he didn't hear from his dad at all this whole time.

And that this was the only text he got from either of them since they left. Chandler mentioned that he helped his mother pack her medications and the police are like, well, why would you do that? He goes, oh, well, I was just bored. I was just trying to help my parents pack. Police are asking this guy is, I don't know. Right. Well, saying some weird stuff. They're thinking the same thing. He's talking so much that they're like,

Okay, well, why are you telling us that you helped your mom pack her medication? I feel like when something like this happens, when someone goes missing, I feel like when you overly talk or you know every little detail, it usually seems like you're guilty. Right. Like if you went missing, granted, I would remember a lot, hopefully, but I feel like I'd be more frantic.

Yeah. Also, I wouldn't I don't know, like the little stuff like, OK, like I woke up at 713 a.m. that morning and then I got up and I walked over and I grabbed an orange juice, you know. Well, and this is going to like further your point even more. He tells police, well, the only reason I'm bringing this up is because she brought enough medication to last her through Saturday, July 10th.

So maybe they're still somewhere and like we just haven't heard from them. And there's no way he knows that. Right. There's no way he's like, I helped her pack her medication and I noticed that she had packed enough to let, you know what I mean? So police took photos of the vehicles and then took a laptop from the home into evidence.

And according to an article in heavy.com, after this, Chandler told WKOW-TV, who were now reporting on the missing parents case, he says, quote, we'll find them. It's better not to listen to the negative theories. They're maybe at a casino. Their phones are off. They have no reception. Maybe they're on a boat having some fun with friends. So this is what he tells the media. Also on July 7th, police interview a woman. So this is the same day that they received the missing person report.

They interview a woman. Now, I'm assuming it's the neighbor. Like, sources didn't clarify, but that's what I'm going to assume is it was a neighbor. And she says she invited Chandler to their home for dinner after police left the Halderson home that day. So after they came that morning and searched and left and Chandler spoke to the media, she invited him over, and now she's talking to police later. She reported to police that several parts of Chandler's story about his parents going to the cabin were very...

out of character for them that they had gone with another couple that chandler didn't know she was like that's weird it's not like they had a ton of friends this is strange she also says that chandler said they had brought a large amount of cash with them and she's like they were cheap they were not the type of couple to just go blow cash at a casino like this is also strange and then he also said that they brought a lot of alcohol with them and she's like they weren't drinkers like it's not like these guys drink every night this she she just told police all

All of these details seem a little weird. She also said it was out of character for the mom to be so out of touch with Chandler because if you remember, she's a helicopter mom. Yeah. She's doting. And even though Chandler's 23, like...

The fact that he's still living at home is because Krista is okay with this. She's a doting mother. Like she likes to take care of her kids. And so she's like, this is weird that he only received one text from them the whole time they were gone. Police at this point speak with someone from Krista's workplace as well, who says,

you know, Krista's very responsible and that her not showing up to work was very unusual for her and that she hadn't actually been to work since July 1st, which matches up with Chandler's theory, except for the fact that if Krista and Bart were going out of town, she would have let her work know, hey, I'm going out of town and I'm not showing up to work. Instead, she just literally didn't show up to work like without even telling anybody. Yeah.

Police began canvassing the neighborhood and asking neighbors if they noticed anything suspicious over the last few days. One neighbor mentions noticing that the small windows on the garage door were open, which she'd never seen before. She's like, those open, I guess, and they've been open, but I've never seen them open before. And it's not clear when this was, but this was presumably around July 1st while the parents were at the cabin. Okay.

On July 7th, the police also interviewed Chandler's girlfriend, who said that she'd been with him many times from July 1st on. So since the parents have been at the cabin, she's spent a lot of time with Chandler. By July 8th, the investigation was in full swing. And needless to say, police were already pretty suspicious about Chandler. His behavior, his story, what the neighbors had said, kind of

of everything going on, they were just kind of a little on edge about him. They decided on this day after noting that Chandler had been in heavy contact with his girlfriend's mom's girlfriend about the farm at Cottage Grove, that they were going to go around and look at it. They were like, why is he so interested in this farm? We're going to go check it out. We've talked to the girlfriend's mom's girlfriend. We're going to go see what this was all about. I just can't believe that. I know we're going to get to it, but if Chandler killed them, which

obviously all signs are pointing to that he did. Why? Why would you kill your parents? Right. So the police make their way up to the rural Cottage Grove land and onto Chandler's girlfriend's mother's girlfriend's property. Cottage Grove is about 16 miles southeast from the Halderson home, so it didn't take long. According to Heavy.com, police...

While there, saw a slight mound covered with foliage, sticks and leaves, and upon investigating, recovered a human torso. Oh my gosh. They could see human remains that had been mutilated and dismembered, and this did not take long. Dismembered. Like, they barely got there. There was black nylon rope and the torso's waist. So that's what they find. The torso was shirtless and dressed in cargo pants with a black belt. Inside of a tank on the property...

Police find scissors, a saw blade and bolt cutters. The saw blade had a slimy appearance that they presumed to be fatty tissue from a human body. That was according to heavy.com. The Halderson's disappearance at this point just went from a missing persons investigation to a possible homicide investigation. What are the chances that they go up to the girlfriend's?

mother's girlfriend's property that Chandler had been so curious about and they find a torso and his parents are missing. It just seems like an open and shut case. Right, right. One plus one equals two. So after this, still on July 8th, but the torso not being publicly reported yet, Chandler decides to give an audio only interview to NBC 15 about the case. He doesn't know that this torso has been recovered.

He says at this point that his parents told him on Thursday, that would have been July 1st, that the next morning they were going to a cabin with friends. They packed up their stuff and they were going to do some minor repairs on the cabin. They got the tools together. Chandler didn't ask who the friends were and he wasn't sure who they were. Did he not ask for an attorney at this point? No, no. Well, he's not under arrest. Does he not think the police are on him at all then? I think he's hoping they're not.

But I don't think he knows. Police haven't like, he hasn't even been officially brought in to be interrogated. The only time they've interviewed has been at his house, which is very like relaxed, casual. They probably weren't very pushy with him. This is not a big deal. Right. Okay. And also I know you say it's kind of, you know, weird that maybe he doesn't have an attorney, but from all of the other true crime cases where it's possible that a child has killed their parents, um,

And not like a child, an adult child has killed their parents. They always do this. Like I've never seen a case where they immediately lawyer up. You get a lawyer, yeah. Yeah. Like they're always just kind of in this same boat from what I've heard and studied. Now I know there's probably a case out there where that has happened. I'm just saying the majority I have heard, they just continue on with life like that.

okay, yeah, it's just, we're just going on now. Unless you're Brian Laundrie. Unless you're Brian Laundrie. Correct. Well, I mean, he kind of did the same thing too. It's just the world caught up with him. So then the media asks what his next steps were in locating his parents. Cause keep in mind, it's the next day. And,

And Chandler says that he's trying to get the word out on their disappearance by talking to the news and making Facebook posts. He mentions that the sheriff went out to the cabin that they were supposed to be at yesterday, which would have been July 7th, but that they found no one there. Chandler says that apparently his parents did make it to the cabin yesterday.

Because he received a text on Sunday, July 4th, from his mother, says they made it and they were going to the parade. So he's like, I know they made it there, but they're not there now. So what about the text? Was this confirmed? Yes, there was a text from her phone to him. Got it.

So then the media asks him, well, when did you start thinking they might be missing? Chandler says that they told him that they'd be home on Monday or Tuesday. And so he started to get a little worried on Tuesday when they weren't home. And then on Wednesday, his aunt went to the cabin and that's when he got worried that

She didn't find him and he decided to make a missing persons report. He said he filed that on July 7th, which would be the day before. The media asks, how are you moving from day to day? He responds, the neighbors got me pizza. My brother should be going to the cabin today to check. We're just keeping busy. As long as we're busy, we're not going to overthink. He says that his parents, again, could just be on a boat somewhere with a few drinks, that there might not be any reception on the boat. So they're just hoping for the best.

Chandler said that reception was not too good at the cabin on busy days. So he clarified that the text he received that he got on Sunday morning, July 4th could have been sent earlier, like when they got there, but it had just come through. Okay. After this interview, Chandler Halderson is brought in for questioning by police because keep in mind, they found the torso from the time he's doing this interview. So they officially bring him in for questioning and they tell him,

we found human remains at the cottage Grove property, your girlfriend's mother's girlfriend's property or family property, whatever. And they interview him about it. And that interview basically ends with him being put under arrest, them believing full well that they,

have found the person who's done this and so they charge him with lying in relation to a missing person's case while they wait for the autopsy because until they know for sure who the body belongs to they're not going to charge him with murder they also don't i agree i agree that i think it's him but is there any other evidence other than that

No, but I mean, that's still pretty good evidence. I would say that's almost even more than circumstantial. I mean, I'm sure it's classified as circumstantial, but he's connected to the property. He's been texting people about the property. And then it is his parent. That's pretty solid evidence. So they tell Chandler at this point, hey, we're placing you under arrest. We think you killed your parents and we know why you did it.

No way. But the public and Garrett has no idea. Nope. So what did police know at this point? Why would Chandler Halderson have even done this? Before you keep going, there's, I'm going to guess. Okay. I'm going to say what I think there is. There is a, some life insurance policy that if they both die or something, he gets it. I mean, that's the only thing I can think of because other than money, I mean, why? Yeah. Yeah.

I mean, it doesn't seem like there's a why. Garrett hasn't listened to enough of these cases of parents who have killed their parents. Or kids who have killed their parents. Money can be the only thing I can think of. Okay. So, it's not money. Okay. I mean, there might have been a life insurance policy, but it's not money. All right. It's because the Chandler that everyone knew...

And the Chandler that he claimed to be was not really Chandler Halderson. And his parents had just found out about it. You mean they like swapped the wrong kid in the hospital? No. What do you mean? We'll get into it. He is Chandler Halderson. He is DNA wise Chandler Halderson. Got it.

According to NBC 15, Detective Brian Shunk testified that based on unofficial transcripts, Chandler Halderson was never a full-time student at Madison College. In spring of 2018, Chandler enrolled at Madison College. In summer of 2018, Chandler enrolled in some classes and then withdrew from others. In the fall of 2018, Chandler completed one class, a design class.

In the spring of 2019, Chandler completed one class and withdrew from three others.

This is the last time he ever completed and received credit for a class at Madison College. But keep in mind, he's told his parents he's been attending Madison College up until 2021. Except 2019 was the last time he ever actually did a class there. By the fall of 2019, Chandler either withdrew or failed all of the classes that he signed up for. And then again in the fall of 2020, he withdrew or failed all of his classes.

during all of this, he's living at their house. They are supporting him and he is like, I'm going to college. I'm getting all of these awards. I'm a part of this. I'm excelling so much. And it was kind of by 2020, uh,

Chandler's parents had become suspicious as to why it was taking him so long to get through school. And then also it was now 2021. And according to him, he was still attending this two year school where no program should have taken longer than two years. So finally on June 29th, 2021, after much back and forth with his parents kind of about, okay, well,

You know, he's like, well, I only have two more classes. I only have one more class. I'm just living off of you guys for now. And they're like, well, what about your SpaceX job? And what about your police scuba diving gig? And he's like, well, it's fine. It's fine. I just need a little bit more time. And they're like, Chandler, college was only supposed to take two years. What's going on? Why is it taking you? Mom, leave me alone. Like, this is the back. This is the atmosphere. So they're going back and forth.

And Bart at this point is kind of like, Chandler, you need to get on with your life. Like you've only gone to a two-year college. It's been three and a half years. Like you almost four, you need to be doing something. We need to be seeing something from this. And he's showing them the emails and the letters from the college. And he's like, trust me, I am. So finally on June 29th, 2021, after this much back and forth, Bart Halderson decides to call Madison College himself.

and try to figure out why it's taking him so long to get through school and kind of how close he was to graduating. This was his question. And according to the prosecution in this case, Bart actually had to pretend to be Chandler during this phone call in order to get the information about Chandler's transcript. And I only say this to prove to how suspicious he was because he wouldn't lie and pretend to be his son unless he really was concerned about what was going on.

It was a Madison College service representative named Omar who spoke to Bart on June 29th. This is just two days before Bart and Krista disappear. It was during this phone call that Bart realized just how bad Chandler had been lying to them over the past three to four years.

Omar informed Bart that Chandler couldn't receive his official transcript because he owed the school more than $2,000 in unpaid tuition. He also told Bart, who's pretending to be Chandler, that he was confused because Chandler, who he assumed he was talking to, had never been admitted into the solar program at all. So what award or certificate of completion was he even talking about? So Chandler had told his parents he had won this big award for completing the solar program, and he was like,

And Omar is like, he was never even enrolled in the solar program. This is when Bart decided to ask Omar if a man named Daniel speech and a woman named Alyssa Brandt were employees at Madison college. Cause these were the employees that he had been emailing, um, about Chandler's college when he was starting to get suspicious. And these were the people that Chandler had told him to email.

And a confused Omar told Bart, no, these people, number one, aren't even employees. They don't even exist at Madison. So Chandler had fully made these people up, created emails to talk to his dad with, and

pretending to be other people he's doing more work pretending not to go to school than if he just went to school yeah so it was after this conversation and the reality of the lies that Chandler had been keeping up the past few years that Bart sent his son a text that read I spoke to Omar he followed it up with another one that said I'm ready when you are okay so kind of like hey son I'm

We've got to confront this. Just come clean, man. Just come clean. Like this has been three to four years. You've been living off of us, pretending to be doing something and you're not even close to graduating. I can't believe he wouldn't just come. I mean, I don't know what happens next, but. Well, two days later, Bart and Krista go missing. Exactly. So instead of just coming clean and just.

owning up to it he apparently kills them right that's insane so according to mitchell chandler's older brother chandler did play a lot of video games like all of the time and it was kind of strange to everybody considering he was a full-time student in the solar program and on the police scuba dive team and also a prominent job at spacex coming up he scuba dive team out of all the things right and so everyone was kind of like how does he have time to play so many video games and

And Mitchell sometimes played these online games with Chandler. This was how they communicated as brothers. And according to him, Chandler loved to use a Russian designed gun called an SXS in the game. This is what he shot with in this video game. And investigators learned later that Chandler Halderson actually received a real life SXS rifle and 400 rounds of ammunition in June from a friend that he made while playing online games. Okay.

Okay. 400 rounds? Right. So this friend confirmed to police that he did in fact bring the gun to Chandler in real life and police found shell casings that could have been fired from this type of gun while searching the Halderson home after the missing persons report. So...

We're going to back up and go back to July 1st, 2021. This was the true last day that anyone saw Bart and Krista. So a family member reportedly saw them that day at their home. Later, investigation reveals that Bart's phone was inactive after this date, July 1st.

According to NBC15.com, after 3 p.m. on July 1st, the health app data on Bart Halderson's iPhone showed data that sensed activity. And after that, there was no more health activity on Bart's phone. So basically, this means that Bart's phone was not in his hand after July 1st.

Krista's phone had limited activity between July 2nd and one text exchange that was sent out on July 4th to Chandler's phone. Got it. Which at this point he obviously stole. Right. So note here, their cell phones will be found later hidden inside of the house. So July 1st was Brett Halderson's birthday, who is Bart's older brother. And they, these brothers had their last conversation when Bart called Brett to wish his brother a happy birthday. Yeah.

Chandler was caught on videotape at a quick trip store at 8.23 p.m. on July 1st, purchasing two large bags of ice. According to the prosecution's theory at trial, this is what he would use to keep the bodies cold.

According to channel3000.com, later that night, neighbors would report smelling a pungent odor in the air while footage from a security camera facing the Halderson home showed a flickering light coming from the house's family room where a fireplace is located. So this is just basically saying they assume the fireplace was on, but this is weird because it's July. The evidence clearly suggests that Bart and Krista were killed inside their home on July 1st. I'm just going to say that.

The next day, Krista had not arranged for a day off, but she did not show up for work. Her coworkers said that this was highly unusual for her and she was normally very responsible. No one was able to get in touch with her. According to later investigation, Chandler's phone whereabouts were traced during this time period based on the location of cell towers and also Snapchat locations. On July 2nd, Chandler's phone placed him at the store Fleet Farm at 7 a.m. and around the Halderson home during the day. According to

According to channel3000.com, surveillance video showed that Halderson then bought a six by eight silver and black heavy duty tarp, a similar tarp that later was discovered in a shed on the property where Balt Harderson's remains were found. So insane. The tarp appeared to have multiple bloodstains on it and they were tested for DNA.

A few days later, Chandler's girlfriend told police that on July 2nd, she had gotten hydrogen peroxide and a Swiffer from her mother because Chandler had broken the glass on the fireplace and had cut his foot on the glass and needed it from her to heal his wounds. On Saturday, July 3rd, a witness saw a young man matching Chandler's description in the town of Roxbury walking towards the highway wearing a

backpack and walking away from the river. She thought the direction he was walking was odd because normally people are walking the opposite, like to go hiking. And so why was he walking this way? She said he saw him walking, but then randomly he turned around and started walking back to the car. Roxbury is an unincorporated community Northwest of Madison. According to Google maps, it's about 20 miles West of the Halterson home. Later investigation into Chandler cell phone records would show that his phone was in this location that day and

Also in the family home and then also around the portage area. Snapchat locators placed his phone in the town of Roxbury and these pings would tie him later to the case because body parts would be found in every single one of these places. Oh my gosh, he...

Spread them. Okay. Which would explain why only that's originally a torso was found. Oh, that's so disturbing. By Sunday, July 4th, Chandler reportedly enjoyed the day attending a barbecue at his girlfriend's family's friend's house at cottage Grove where the body was later found. Your parents can just go. Yes. Right. Like I,

I did it. And now I'm going to go celebrate. Yeah, I don't understand that. And also on the same day, a coworker was concerned about Krista who hadn't showed up to work and got in touch with Chandler. Said, hey, have you seen your mom? And he said, well, he got in hold of his parents and everything's fine. He said, yeah, I've been talking to my parents every single day. Everything's fine. So he told a coworker this.

And he says they're expected back on Tuesday. By Monday, July 5th, one of Krista's coworkers who'd been trying to get in touch with her since July 2nd went to the residence on Oak Spring Circle to check on Krista. The witness noted that both vehicles were in the garage, which seemed unusual given that according to Chandler, they were supposed to be out of town. The coworker also later told detectives that he noted looking in the front door, there was a table which was on its side.

but it was the coffee table. And so he's like, why is that knocked down? This witness told police that he'd been inside the residence several times and advised that this coffee table was in the dining room usually. And now it's in the family room on its side. This witness and another individual who'd shown up at the house, also looking for the Halderson's knocked out the door and windows for a few minutes. Chandler finally answered the door half naked and looked like he'd just gotten out of the shower. The witness noticed gauze or a bandage on Chandler's foot.

Chandler told these witnesses that his parents had been picked up around 5 a.m. the day they left to go to the cabin, and that's why both cars were still there. When the witness asked him about his foot, Chandler said he'd cut his foot on the fireplace and he'd gotten blood everywhere. I

After this, Chandler goes over to the home of Chandler's girlfriend's mother's girlfriend, the one in Cottage Grove. On Wednesday, July 7th, an AC repairman who had been scheduled showed up to the Halterston home to install an AC unit. The appointment had been set up by BART. No one answered. The AC guys knocks on the door and then Chandler showed up at the house driving a Subaru.

So neither of the parents' cars. And I think it was a car that belonged to his girlfriend's family of some kind. The AC guy reported that there was some weird pauses in the conversation on Chandler's part when he started talking to him. And he said, oh, I know my parents originally scheduled you, but they've changed their mind. The AC guy also noticed that a vent of some sort was covered with tape.

which struck him like that's concerning like you shouldn't cover a vent up after this chandler walked into the police station and reported his parents missing got it according to testimony at trial by wisconsin department of justice criminal analysts chandler made the following google or youtube searches on july 8th after hearing the police were going up to the cottage grove to look around so remember when you asked me is he not like concerned that police are on to him

So while they were going up looking for the torso, before he talks to media, these are the searches he made. At 9.44 a.m., he searched body found in Wisconsin. At 9.44 a.m., women's body found in Wisconsin. 9.44 a.m., Wisconsin dismembered body found. 9.45, dead body found in Wisconsin. 9.45, Googling, body found in Milwaukee River, 2021. Holy crap.

What an idiot. First, what an idiot in general, but what an idiot. Like, I just don't understand how people don't think that your computer is going to be collected. It's like, do you not realize like what? I don't know. And then explain it at 312 PM. So later that day, he searches Bart and Krista into Google.

So he's trying to see if they've found. Correct. Yes. He's trying to see if they have been found and if there's any news on it. Exactly. Also, it's crazy. He's searching other places that the police haven't even looked. Even looked yet. So he's literally giving away where he's hidden body parts. And like I said, his phone pings and his Snapchat locations will later tie him to everywhere where the bodies were found. Got it. So as this was happening, police are obviously discovering the torso at the Cottage Grove property.

At this point, Chandler was losing his crap. Like he's going crazy, waiting at home, trying to figure out what's happening, obviously. So anxious and his thoughts eating him alive, Chandler called the police saying that he found some spare keys for the cabin. I'm only including this because he's inserting himself into the investigation in hopes of them providing details or updates. So he's calling with pointless information in hopes that they'll say we found a body.

He said that the previous Wednesday, which would have been June 30th, the day before his parents disappeared, was a bad day because his dad was watching Wheel of Fortune and got really angry when Chandler broke the glass of the fireplace and that he had hurt himself trying to clean it up. Again, this doesn't make much sense other than the fact that he's trying to find an excuse to fish out information or explain some injuries on his body. He's obviously nervous and desperate. Around 3.30 p.m. on July 8th, Chandler called the police asking about the two police cars that

that were sitting outside of his home. And while on the phone with police, he says, oh wait, there's four now. Police are like trying not to tip him off that, okay, they've found the torso at this point. And so that's why there's police outside. So they say, oh, it's just a shift change. We're just waiting outside to see if your parents show up. But again, this is him trying to micromanage and figure out if he's a suspect. Why are these cars sitting outside? What's going on?

So after this Chandler gives the audio interview to the media and then the Dane County Sheriff's interview Chandler at the sheriff's office on video for two hours. And at one time stamp, apparently after invoking his right to an attorney,

which means they're no longer allowed to interview him. Chandler made some unsolicited comments about wanting to tell the police everything, that they didn't know the whole story, and that he didn't feel bad about what he did. Detective Shunk told Chandler during the interview, we know your parents are no longer with us and we know the reason why. He also said your parents never made it to the cabin and you know that and we know that.

They then placed him under arrest after the two hours of questioning. So on Saturday, July 10th, the autopsy of the torso begins, which positively identified the torso as missing Bart Halderson's.

It says there is one wound which enters through the abdominal cavity, hits the spinal cord and fragments widely. The hemorrhaging was not consistent with suicide. The fragments found were that of a high velocity projectile from a rifle. The medical examiner determines that this would have been a fatal injury. By Monday, July 12th, Crystal Halderson is still missing.

Chandler appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on the original charge relating to his father. This court is located in Madison. Three new counts, including first degree homicide were filed by the DA's office against Chandler relating to his father's murder. On Wednesday, July 14th, remains are found in the town of Roxbury along the Wisconsin river near old highway 60. By Thursday, July 15th,

The criminal complaint was filed by the district attorney's office, detailing some of the chronology listed above. The complaint charges Chandler with first degree intentional homicide, false info on kidnapped missing persons, mutilating a corpse and hiding a corpse, all relating to his father's murder. Chandler appears in court on Zoom because it's 2021 and it's a bail hearing by Friday, July 30th.

2021 the remains located in the town of Roxbury are confirmed to be Krista Halderson so now both parents have been found law enforcement asks the DA's office to add the same four charges against Chandler for his mother as were previously filed against him for his father at this point investigators say that additional human remains are found on the Halderson's property that haven't been identified yet and then on January 3rd 2022 the trial begins with jury selection on

On January 11th, during trial, Chandler tests positive for COVID. And so trial is delayed. Once resumed,

Mitchell was actually a huge part of trial. His older brother, his testimony almost pointed the finger at Chandler. So Mitchell almost testifies against Chandler. I'm sure he's like, dude, you killed my parents. Right. A huge piece of evidence was that the prosecution put in testimony that Bart and Krista's cell phones and driver's license had been found wrapped up together in tinfoil and a paper towel and hidden in a shoe inside of the family home.

This guy is watching way too much TV. That was horrible advice. Right. So cell phone records for Krista's phone showed that the text from Krista's phone on July 4th had come from...

from Windsor, which is the family home. So not from the location of the cabin. So they, all this evidence is just open and shut. And the prosecution just basically says that this kid had promised all these things that he was going to go on and be an astronaut and SpaceX. And he'd really just been living a life for the last four years. And it had finally caught up to him. And he, the way to handle that was to just murder the two people who had figured out.

The prosecution also put in evidence that a piece of a human skull was found in the family's fireplace. Oh my gosh. Police found a pair of shoes in the Halderson garage that had red stains on them. Additionally, both Krista and Bart's DNA in blood form was found on various parts of an axe found in the family's garage, as well as on the inside of the family's trash can and on various tools, including scissors, a saw blade, and shears.

So everything at the home basically is just concrete forensic evidence that they were murdered there. And the only one who was home during that time, according to his own statements, the night before they left was Chandler himself. I just don't understand how you do this without one feeling bad and to any rise of emotion at all. Right. Whether it's this is gross, whether is this is nasty.

Sad. I'm mad. Like there was zero rise of emotion. It seemed like. Right. According to channel3000.com, DNA testing also confirmed legs and other human body parts found near the Wisconsin River in the town of Roxbury that belonged to Krista Halderson. The jury deliberated for only two hours and convicted Chandler on all counts. Okay.

On March 17th, 2022, the judge sentenced Chandler to life in prison without the possibility of parole, which is the mandatory sentence for first degree homicide. Death penalty is not an option in Wisconsin. Chandler received the maximum sentence on all the other charges, which run concurrently, which really doesn't matter considering that he received the life sentence. Chandler Halderson had turned 24 years old just a few days before the sentence hearing.

At the sentencing, the judge said, I have to, for this sentencing, ensure that the only time Mr. Halderson comes back into the community is to have the privilege of a burial he denied his parents. Holy crap. Good. Good for the judge. According to their joint obituary, Bart and Krista enjoyed spending time with their sons, their dogs, and their many friends.

They liked going to Badgers football games and concerts on the square. They actively supported several community organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, the Optimist, and UW-Madison Outreach. Bart was an avid golfer and was immersed in home remodeling. Krista enjoyed crafts, cooking, and interior decoration. Most importantly, they were devout parents and were a loving husband and wife.

I'm also really sad because he killed his parents who absolutely loved him. Right. Like even their obituary said twice. Even they knew that what he'd like the dad Bart even knew he was lying. He didn't call him and yell at him. He was just like, hey, I'm ready when you are.

Like, dude, just come clean to them and then keep moving on with life. Right. But you kill them? Right. That's just so horrible. So this case is not far off from I've heard at least three other cases that are...

Similar. Where the kids just seem to, I mean, in other cases, it does seem like the parents were a little more strict or demanding, but where it's just like the kids are like, you're in my way, so I'm going to eliminate you. Yeah, it's horrible. And it's just, it is. It's awful. So today we're going to think about...

number one all of the living family who have been affected by this ordeal and then also bart and krista who were brutally murdered by their own child that they loved more than anything in the world okay you guys thank you so much for listening to our episode this week and i guess we will just see you guys next week with another episode i love it and i hate it goodbye
