that I love .
IT ah that he always gets the lyrics wrong but why lyrics are always work .

you who song like from her, I shed a great version.
Okay, so it's what the real things are like you said you .
and then and then he just says, are you who are you so .
I thought said, I screen ice cream she's so beautiful but IT doesn't at all but I was think in those lyrics for weeks yeah because I think .
IT isn't that what IT says? That says.
like SHE said you .
ho SHE said you ho, really like guy I said you ho, yeah and then this is like you ho, yeah, yeah you.
you're look.
it's so good. You just what I say every time I here.
and then hold one more. Let me just two on her. And B, B, remember the og, one that I think we realized was walking on a dream? Yes, but in pair of the sun. And they say, like, is IT real now, when two people become one, but I say, this is a grandma.
Is he making pick up? And he .
was so serious.
So you know what? Pekin pie or sme an pie.
that's what I always say.
We have a story detail.
It's always hard when we have to transition out of our redon q speak in the beginning.
I mean, where we speak silly, yeah we just do. Or redstone ces, we've silly little things going on. Little we're gonna talking about some really intense murder. Yeah, so good, serious. So you know this, this is a Baker tail.
Just because of like the people involved, like the i'm going to be talking about FLorence burns in the murder of walter Brooks, we're going to be talking about um this little like they're called like the bedford avenue gang or something like that but is a bunch of like Richard kids in this game who just started like i'm bored with being rich so i'm gona cause trouble who the fuck ZARA here? Like thing i've ever seen like it's just a feels made up here. So the year of this is to jump a it's .
like the early one thousand .
nine hundred and one thousand and one or OK. I know around that time it's always unna here.
the one hundred hundred nine early it's member, I can think of the the game, but we doing a crime count episode and there was like another group of rich kids that yeah got bored of being rich and made again. And I was like the White bronco gain or something.
where to look back on? Yeah.
that's all I had right now. This crime came down. I do to .
every single .
day is max cutler .
is great. yeah. Bring back crame countdown.
Sorry if you give your my eyes.
but let's get into this with let's start off with who FLorence burns is. yeah. So who is works? Tell me. Now, at the dawn of the twenty eighth century, the united states was definitely undergoing a pretty big social and cultural change, mostly because, you know, there was major advances in technology and transportation that's gna cause huge, like sweeping changes all the way around, because that's allowing americans to travel outside of the relatively closed regions that they were living in. What is the face that you're making.
just like in a silly, goofy mood? I started about sportage. You said americans, could I take IT how I can think of with the charcoal? Xc x andris s, let's ride. I don't even.
Know what that is mean, like here. Just look at each other. It's from the party movie isn't IT? No, maybe not. My miki became that rug ogi like, I don't know. I GTA play for something in the song that's .
wrong because .
i'm saying this something like what is happening .
because she's just like, I like .
what's going on.
I'm going to get out of the game you to apologize long time i'll get up for put the data music here.
All of america, all of amErica just going.
I even leaving a bad of loving thing he heard laughing. I don't know why my family is a fucking weird boys. So your .
brain is like A A midnight carnival. It's I like cookie 忘。 了, 妈。
if I was still dating up, I would write that.
Sometimes I think about people in real life that list is that I know what i'm like, go, god. All right, all right, all all right, all right.
all right.
Is all of the america's one flips, right?
That's great. All of. Switch the technology becomes available. And just like what.
Please say at least some .
of man so so as ash was saying let's roll amErica said let's ride but according to Virginia econo, who is a book you should definitely pick up, we are working in the shown notes um this quote gave teenagers and Young adults access to places they might not have had earlier, particularly those living in cities like new york, for instance.
This whole expansion of urban infrastructure like bridges, tunnels, public transportation, uh, that all meant that people living in places like bricklin nony island could now easily access the business and entertainment districts that were in what was once a far away land of manhattan until they really lets lets ride. And this opened up new opportunities for employment, but also for cultural engagement. So everybody d's just being their words are opening up basically for teenagers and Young adults, particularly the wealthy, without financial responsibility, lit, ie.
S are really familiar obligations. This expansion of transportation allowed them to escape what was usually the watch for ly of their parents and gave them easy access to the fun stuff, the dance calls, the speaks, easy honey, the restaurant. So all the other social spaces.
like riding in cars of boys.
withdrew very more exactly like that in this meant that maybe for the first time, they could actually shed the societal expectations of responsibility and respectability that usually kids in those family said, and they were now free to be themselves without any of the adult supervision. And although the idea of teenagers, as we understand IT today, wouldn't really emerge for many decades, it's really Better. Yeah, it's really good. Probably the this early twenty eight century youth culture, youth culture. So IT was still a big social shift from the previous generations because that's the thing each generation of .
teen gets valier and .
violer more confusing for the previous generation. Like that just happens.
Boomers look at Jenny, like what? Oh yeah. Like they thought lenise. They hate the honda honey. But so so at this .
social shift from previous generations was really unlike anything americans had seemed to that point. For Young people in new york, many of them from conservative immigrant families, the freedom of movement allowed them to shed the restrictive culture experienced in the home, an experiment with sometimes new, often rebellious identities.
Now, among those Young people in new york basically seeking to establish their own identity, their own rebellion, outside of the home was fLorin spring. I knew IT SHE was the daughter of strict german immigrant parents, born a April nine thousand thousand nine hundred and eighty two in new york to frederic and Henry ea. burns.
FLorence had a lot of advantages, a lot. And he had a sense of stability that her peers could probably on letter of a Frederick burns was a very successful manhattan surana ker. Uh, he had actually views like kind of locally famous as a popular announcer for the various events held by the amar athletic union as well.
No, FLorence's mother and rida was also elt well respected. SHE was the daughter of William Frederick under bush, one of the light, of course, one of the lead entry engineers and the construction of the bricklin bridge. Oh, fuck, you know, I think I D of her now, given her parents social status and respective Peterels, IT was baffling to friends and family that FLorence seemed to be out of control from early age. He said, girl, you're gone too fast was, by most accounts, pretty lazy.
He is so SHE consistently did .
poorly in school, which is different, because usually IT was like they had, like you're from a prominent family to be held to. And quote, was more interested in boys than in her studies word. Despite her beauty, however, her rapid personality and general lack of curiosity did kind of little to win her over many friends. Or mal suiters should like he was beautiful. SHE was, you know, but he just didn't have a lot of depth of that.
I love the word bid to describe somebody.
And SHE seems like he was the definition of that at that time like just SHE didn't really have a lot of ambition. SHE didn't really have a lot of substance happening. Shouldn't have hot bus yeah and as most people knew her, they thought was pretty boring.
Not you've got a lot of money that's about IT um also a FLorence's behavior was occasionally extreme or inappropriate, especially when SHE didn't get her away oh for instance, when her first serious boyfriend Harry broke up with her after the initial you know like romance in the beginning wore off, Florance exhibited behavior that would today most likely be considered stocking. Oh goody. And there were even rumors that you have threatened to kill him unless he married her. So SHE went, SHE went too far. Usually.
I mean, at least in my experience, that doesn't work.
That doesn't work else was turkey.
My experience yeah to say I think you've ever done that?
No but like an experienced .
that i've heard of, I don't think that work. I don't see automatic s like that really working. Marry me.
I will especially like like, like love. yeah. I wonder if you, Billy would word in her and was like, I think about IT.
I think about IT.

Well, flower in his parents were equally at a loss as we are when he came understanding FLorence. They'd given her literally every opportunity in the world. Everyone SHE had anything at her fingertips, yet SHE seemed determent to defy them at every turn.
In fact, as far as FLorence was concerned, her parents were more like jellous than parents. They were outdated disciplinarians who had no idea what I was like to be Young. They just didn't get IT mom, not a and in reaction to what he perceived as parents that were too rigid and overly restrictive, FLorence acted out a lot, getting kicked out of school, getting kicked out of local businesses for smoking. At the time, I was illegal for women to smoke in public. Fake.
nobody is bad for you, but yeah.
stupid love. But running away, SHE would hang out with a bad crowd is just, you would do no kinds of things. That was the classic.
Sounds like the beginning. There was all that also on ane like beyond scared state.
yeah. Doesn't IT honest? Like that's true. Now, in response of this, fred the dad disciplined his daughter in ways that would no longer be considered acceptable.
This included physical abuse or no, confining her to her bedroom and on more than he would, just didn't roll her in a boarding school outside of the city, including one in montreal. Oh, good. I H, though he always right away and made her way back to berkeley on her own. Now by the time he was seventeen years old, old FLorence had dropped out of schools. SHE hadn't gone further. Eighth grade at last point seemed just completely directionless when he was finally when he finally found a group of friends um he felt super comfortable finally, and SHE felt like he was accepted by these people and they didn't want anything more of her than who he was and this group was called the bedford .
open gang oh no.
So he joined the gang. So i'll go. I'll give you a little more inside into this so gang okay. So given her lack of interest in things like school or creative pursuits, IT shouldn't come too much of a surprise that this is the kind of group that you fell in with IT was a nineteen no one in this um this is this gang was mainly, I say gang like and could that's what they were called yeah ah this good gang was comprised of what her parents would almost certainly dem bad influences. yes.
The bedford avenue gang, as they called themselves, was named for the bedford divestment neighbourhood of brooklin, where many of its members lived, and IT was comprised of boys and Young men, mostly for mostly well off, if not affluent families. interesting. Now, according to the the gangs quote, main goal was to get money from unsuspecting citizens, primarily shopkeepers.
But like you don't need .
IT so that the other there is just their assets who are like we're board. Our parents are mean because like we can just like lazily roll around all the time and just get money. So we're just going to steal that from people who work.
Yeah, let's still money that we can already have. That's good. Of course, this was not like we said, like like ash just pointed out, wasn't for lack of having their own money to spend right hello or given to them by their parents.
But instead the shop lifting, petty robbery and pick pocketing were committed just for the thrill limit. They were board Richard wild. Their secondary interest, however, was women. And for this group of wealthy, wealthy sed bad boys, I got to them up. Would you know they relate the the boot legis of bad boys, you know, I mean, hundred percent are like coming from boarding schools and like you, they have all the everything in the world that they could ever want. But they're like, we're belling against mommy .
and daddy y it's like that one kid that we always knew who that had to rich dad in school and they were like, they thought they were rich because .
their dad was there. The kids that say my dad a lawyer so that these kids, my dad is lawyer, but I get fine if .
you're dad is a lawyer. Like cool. That's but if you're flaunting IT, if you're walk in the eight grade like my dad isn't.
if you are any human being in your report to somebody, walk, leave.
walk the other the way. Xy person, walk the other way. Sorry, what is this games name? There's .
been this is a bunch of you know rich boys who are rebelling. They're they get everything they want and they're probably well quiet, you know like they're put together and so they had no shortage of girls and Young women who follow them like groupies of course of course because it's like the it's like bad boy light yeah like diet bad boy so it's like a diet bad .
boy so if you're not ready .
for like the full the full thing, you get the diet bad boy and you can be like, well, everything you'll be fine. Can help paying .
the bill and find pictures of them. It's just like, do you want to see these other games that are that are different?
You want to see these they're different. Um but the thing is, maco notes, the bedford avenue gang g of boys was dedicated to seducing the group y girls who followed them. And IT gets worse and darker because this is all like very fluffy and like they're just little shitty rich boy, you'll get yours, you know I mean like sAiling from people work.
But IT was worse. They got darker because they would they were all about these group y girls. They would keep them around.
They were like, you know, he was like an actual, like, like mafia style, you know, like the girl hanging around. Sure, sure. But if they didn't weren't able to seduce them, they would turn to sexual assault. They would just, they would like they were rapist so well, so SHE IT turns from this like, silly, the silly. That's why this. But this game is like, so gross in so many ways because it's it's a bunch of shit heads who have everything in the world at their fingertips, are doing all of this just for a thrill of IT and also taking advantage of women who these Young women, who probably don't know any Better, it's just like the whole thing is so nasty .
layers and layers.
they're just rose yeah. So despite the petty, shallow and criminal interests of this thing they provided, like we are the argument, a pretty attractive lifestyle and kind of social outlet that appealed to rebellious Young people like FLorence. We're looking for just that.
They were easily recognizable because they were flamboyant outfits, which included diamond jewellers. Girls would wear core sets brightly colored with the boys would wear the best in the spite tailed overcoat like barry over the top. And they also Carried heavy canes and baseball bat with them. Well, definitely part of the overall of IT would also double as a weapon if they .
wanted to be. What a widely time to be like the .
bedford avenue game would be comparable to something and this is actually um this is dyve brought this up and its such a perfect comparison I had like brilliant comparison by dave. They would be comparable to something like the fictional drugs in Anthony uh burgess one thousand and sixty two novel a clock or orange. They're very much like that get like IT calls into like you can think of that king when you like you should read IT.
It's crazy, I will. But there are also in these two are also similar to what we would moderate, probably think of Young, middle class White men who engage in writing and looting after certain sporting events. I mean, like that kind of thing where IT has no purpose whatsoever, just just the now their behavior and engagement in violence and destruction, there is not a matter of survival or necessity or even purpose.
You know what you mean? Like there's nothing to back IT up at all, board, rich. It's just a thrilling outburst of bad criminal behavior because they know they're not going to be punished for IT because of that where they sit in the in the class system because they are dad because my dads is a lawyer. That's so that's why now when I came to the bedford avenue gang, there wasn't exactly a hierarchy or organization structure per say, but there was a kind of like informal leader. I feel like that always happens yeah um and this informal leader was theater or ted beus and his best friend water broke ah now by us was the sun, the only sun of a millionaire stockbroker and after graduating from high school in one hundred and ninety eight using his generous allowance given to him by his mother to fund his flashy lifestyle and petty criminal escapees like the others in the gangs, he was known to lash out violently any time he felt the urge targeting anyone from a random pedestrian on the street to the police but ted criminal activities weren't confined only to violence. Beth was a well known thigh, and he he stole everything from money, cars, jewellery and even one stelly prize french bulldog worth a thousand dollar.
He does not deserve that. Fucking the dog.
That's and like, what did you do with the dog?
I want to hell go attacking king in me too.
That's exactly what I wanted do now, although he came from a family far less wealthy than that of ted buis, walter Brooks did fit in with the gang on. Walter was born in bricklin in the summer of eighteen eighty one, and grew up in a very stable households where his father was a type set with one of the new york newspapers. As a child, walter was smart.
He was attractive, very popular athlete, very good student. But he was known as, quote, something of a wild Young man, rather fast, addicted to fine clothes, alcohol and pretty women. Now, following is graduation from high school. Walter chose not to pursue a college education, which usually, at this time, Young men of his social standing would definitely pursue all that. So this was different.
But instead he went into business with two friends to um as commission merchants um and the walter shared many interests with ted brusk informal leader there he was less interested in act of violence and destruction and he was more inclined to like move towards like you know schemes and scams like you like to. That part of is a conman. He wanted to earn money and he wanted attention and he wanted adoration from Young woman.
That's what for he was a look and a beat the shit out as someone. He just wanted girls to follow over them for him so he thought scams and scheme, and we're going to do for them. There's other ways to go about the absolutely many.
A walter was incredibly popular with women really, but much to their dismay, he wasn't really in the commitment. He was in one girl kind of guy, in fact, the year before his death, walter was engaged to a Young woman named the lady eaten. I love the name and makes me think the princess and the frog.
Which we watched me because my Youngest wanted to watch her for the first time. And I think her name is charlie and the best friend. But they call her a lady.
I I like lady.
just guys. But walter .
was engaged .
to Young woman named laddie. But just a few months later, ladie called off the engagement because he cited, well to his quote, moral lapses as a reason.
Also, can we just take a second for the name lodi eaten Richard? Girl, in the fucking world.
like none of us should are, we can be in the room with lady.
lady eating like your fucking and heart.
I T belong in the same room as .
lot like I think I do. I don't hold a, what do they say? I don't hold A A candle, a candle book.
Who holds .
a candle? A crazy.
our girl a lot SHE wasn't specific about what those moral lapses were, but we can kind of think think with the thing between areas, things and other troubles. Hey, yeah it's not good. So um there was also a lot of rumors about him um being part of a many uh secretive pregnancies oh go and you know like secret abortions, all kinds of things going.
He was very much being irresponsible with his with his affections. Oh good. Spread too much now and again, you're engaged. Don't be engaged, right?
You if you're .
not to be engaged, if ever there was a woman that was perfect for walter Brooks, IT was floridan experience was that both were Young, they were impetuous, they were shallow, they were reckless. When I came to the emotions and wanted of others in, according to Virginia econo, even the gangs leader ted baris quote made a conscious decision to stay away from floridan experience because he knew he would cause him trouble. That's dead buris like hit ten people on the street.
He's like the most records. And he's like, he's like auto fog with you like that.
That's a lot. So well, ted and the other gang members may be smart enough to steer clear of FLorence. Walter saw something of an iron stable, kinder wood spirit in her, and his desire would ultimately lead to deadly consequences.
Yeah, I felt that way. So in one thousand nine hundred, around the time floor started hanging around the bedford avenue avenue gang. The base of Operations for the group was a ony island dance hall, which I got to say this does not have. The vibes are right. The substances off.
Yeah, the vibes are right.
And like the settle, like thinking of like a colony island dance gang. Like that's that's fun and then you get into the substance of you say, no, no, no, no, no on island, but this tony island dancall was called batter's road house .
that I think do that took like, oh, dance talent colony island, what bats, bats dance or no batter's road house, ders road houses, like in konnie .
island here, I was only a half hour commute from their homes. So, okay. And IT honestly made as well.
I ve been in another country when I came to the freedom and offered the uncle in teller. I mean, they were totally on their own there. Yeah, I was a wild, very anonymous police, away from judgemental eyes and expectations of anyone, including their parents.
The members of the bedford avenue gang there would smoke, they would drink. They shed the Victorian era protocols because, remember, we're in a specific era here, uh, that in those protocols would have kept Young men and women separate at all times. Razer, different and IT would require very elaborate courtship. Ual, before they could even think of getting to the .
more intimate parts .
of a look at each other.
But he was that bears out spout.
Walter and FLorence met for the first time, and walter immediately foundry resistible so good. The two became romantically involved very soon after, and things became physically intimate very quickly. No Victoria .
protocols here, in none of that. All of you in my head as the guy on tiktok that runs around with the red flag.
literally, he should run out and just be like, no. Both of you, to be honest, like, no. So unlike most of the other girls in the neighborhood who either appreciated walter from a far or were put off by his reputation as a member of this king, FLorence liked that diet bad boy image in his rebellious attitude.
He was like, oh, my goodness, is exactly that. I'd look a former whole life. And before long, FLorence was claiming that he had phone in love with walter and SHE loved him, quote, even more than my mother and father um and he generally returned facebook declarations of love m. Florian had been in love before walter, or at least something that resembled .
that I remember he said he was going to kill the go.
going to kill you. A year before they met, SHE had been in a relationship with at least three members of the bedford avenue. Again, before walter, we got a group. All of them burned, very hot, very bright. You know?
You know how these go?
I love that he was able to like sticker around after that. Yes, you just they were like, that's fine. Didn't last very long.
Mostly due to their inability or disinterest in any kind of commitment they live in. And so IT was with FLorence and water, who met quickly fell in love in August nineteen. No one um they already having relationship troubles by october. So they're kind of following right in the writing the footsteps of those previous relationship exactly kind of thing.
There were rumors going around the group that walter had been chasing after another Young woman who hung out on the frenches of the warn found out SHE made her displeasure known, saying, if IT we're true, walter would, quote, suffer for IT. SHE scares me. Ah SHE got that.
He scares me alone. Yeah, this is that not good. Never want to worry much about what others thought, though FLorence made no attempt to keep her relationship with walter a secret, and the two were anything but discard when I came to physical displays of affection.
H, I hate, hate that so much, so much. That usually to me, that's that's a red flag right there. Yeah, right thing. When word of the relationship made its way to feed and Henry and a burns, you mom and he had were outraged. Not only was their daughter, uh, being very inappropriate, sexually active in a time when this was just not okay.
that our daughter is a hot let the hay.
but also he was once again, according to them what they're thinking, a source of embarrassment. And SHE was going to be a source of potentially scandalous rumors about that family, right? In response, fred in henrieta took yet another hard line with their daughter, making a clear, in no uncertain terms that SHE, they disapproved of this relationship.
And they kicked her out of the house. Oh, shit. They told her he couldn't return unless he was .
married to walter. Oh man, yeah. So how she's got a new goal? yes.
So redden, Henry and his reaction likely seems pretty harsh but the burns is had already endured a lot of embarrassed inside from their point of view here everybody has a as a result of fluences behavior and they didn't think they could stand for another. Um and also as Virginian econo points out, quote, possibly there was a pregNancy involved as IT seems to have been a drastic action on their part and they are not drawn such a hard line with FLorence under like similar circumstances before so they think they're must have been something else in here.
I could see that but I could also see IT just being like so many things. I remember .
they had a different style, apparently. Yeah, so, so, yeah. So the possibility of a pregNancy would also explain why floor's began pressuring walter to marry her that fall, something that everyone from, everyone from the other guy members to his parents strongly discouraged.
Ed, oh, wow. So his parents were like to know. And the other other members were like, no or not flow. no.
Walter might not have been interested in marine FLorence, but that didn't stop him from continuing his relationship with her throughout the Better part of november, florets lived in a boarding house in brooklin, but that didn't stop her from being a near constant presence in the brook's households. h. SHE would take along lunches with walter. SHE would lunch with his mother, sometimes even attended church services with them on sunday. It's interesting .
that he really like, became part of their lives .
and even still, and they were still, that should tell you, yeah. But by the end of november, SHE had moved in with the brook's family after coming down with some vague illness that many speculated could have been the unexpected consequences of a self induced miscarriage .
or abortion that's really sad.
Rather than insist FLorence return home to her parents care, walter's father, Thomas Brooks, simply paid for fluences medical care. And he was like, you know what, I am pretty accustom to taking care of my my walters stuff that goes on yeah so i'm just onna take of whatever you need as well.
I mean, IT was like.
all right. And IT seems likely that FLorence was actually pretty ill for a short time. But the factor remains that SHE definitely use the opportunity to force her way into the brook's home and stake a further claim on walter by early december when sh'd finally recovered from whatever was Ailing her.
Because there's no actual like medical records here yeah. FLorence had all but formally moved into the house and once again started pressuring walter to marry her. Each conversation became more and more desperate at this point.
And later, after walter's death, mrs. Brooks would recall the ways in which FLorence would attempt manipulate in control. Walter SHE would claim that he would shoot him with her father's pistol if he didn't agree to marry her.
That's, again, not the way to go about.
And this is his mother. Same as later being like, yeah, like I witnessed. Oh my god.
Yes, I can see why they were like, i'd rather you not marry her.
And this is even, this is such a wild thing that happens. So god very frustrated and very exhausted with FLorence's childish behavior. Waller's mother, eventually, one time when he was like, i'm going to shoot you with my father's pistol SHE just looked at her and said, why don't you just shoot yourself with IT? And it's like lords responded because I love walter too much so .
i'm going to kill him and .
staking and also like this is SHE said.
get out me house said .
that's a moa bear energy, right?
Like boy mom.
Boy.
energy is a jokey.
but this is broke really. SHE had enough. So then i'll tell you how how at the end of their rope everyone was with FLorence that they're just like, what did you just take the so do yourself like like say that got a that's bad because that's a rough thing to say yeah, that you couldn't say that anybody people Brooks, come, I get some decorum rich also flams don't be threatened to kill her son. Yeah, bad on both both things ending I don't in how you .
said got get to here.
exactly. really. okay. I'll be your escape. Oh, good. Now as the year came to a close, the arguments between walter and FLorence continue to escalate to the point that Thomas Brooks, walther's father, p. Ol, went two fred burns, FLorence's father, and beg him to allow flodden to come home.
get her the fuck, auto my house.
And he told him that he had become a major disruption. And in their households he was like.
you ve got to take your back in. Her dad is like that she's a major disruption in our house.
This father was like, no, telling Brooks he wouldn't low her back until a couple had married and Thomas literally was like, that will never happen like he was like, going coming back and they were like, where out a stand still here. Now while the Brooks es may not have been successful at convincing FLorence his parents take her back, they were finally able to rid themselves of a constant presence when SHE moved to a new boarding house at the end of december um and after only a few weeks at this boardings house SHE did get her own parents to agree to let her back in oh, he was able to come i'm actually very surprised by that news IT doesn't IT turned out that fred and Henry ea.
Burns had only agreed to let floor smooth back in because SHE said SHE and walter were getting marry yeah I had a feeling I knew SHE I knew he was doing to and shows he definitely came to a surprise to walter, yeah, that he was getting married. He agreed to note such thing so he didn't understand this. But regardless of all that, the lie had put walter in a difficult position as well.
He either had to agree to very FLorence, or be responsible for her getting kicked out of her house again. Either way, he would be responsible for taking care of her. She's the wildest ledge.
I gotta marry her and take Carrier, or she's going to be kicked out of her house and i'm going up to take server because is my fall. That's a catch twenty two. I heard for some reason, whatever reason. And just before the year ended, walter agreed to mary FLorence, and the two went to the church of the good shepard in berkeley, where FLorence insisted that revert Robert Rogers, marry them immediately, perhaps sensing something was a miss, uh, revd Rogers said. And he said, there's no witnesses here. That's that's a no for me, right? So that was that they didn't get married having once again failed to manipulate weltered to marry her, FLorence returned home and told her parents the truth, and they promptly kicked her out of the house for a second time.
That's kind of sad because.
guys, we have tried to get married and we couldn't. We couldn't know. He doesn't wanna marry me. Don't get once again. Later fired, FLorence would warm her way back in to his households. But fortunately, a friend of his recommended a boring house on west one forty fourth street, where SHE could stay for ten dollars a week, which now would be a little over three hundred dollars in the present.
Oh, oh, on the money.
Now, after nearly a month at the new boarding house, FLorence was allowed to move back into her parents' again, likely with the understanding that SHE and walter were now engaged and would eventually be married man. Despite that promise, however, floor's found herself in the same position sheet. Artibonite twice, either convinced walter to marry her or find herself self out on the street again.
More importantly, at least in the long term, there was a growing chance that if he continued to defy them, that her parents would cut that heart like financially as well, and done that. okay. So he was worried that was the big, that was going to be the big hammer, basically putting an end to her life of access and luxury, which he was just not willing to do.
Of course not. The genre marcano points out that given FLorence in her father's desperation for her to be married, well, there must have been a baby on the way. So everybody keeps pointing out that there they're to have been something here that's like much more over the top.
I don't know about that events. I'm not convinced to that either. That's just what a lot of people thought.
So I wanted to make sure I mention IT. yeah. I also notice convinced.
I think this is just respectability. I agree. And I can a respectability.
I can see why people would think that, but I agree with you.
Yeah I think I think what what Virginia econo is pointing out what many people thought too. So he is going off of like a lot of other things, is that if IT was a pregNancy, IT would become obvious everyone shortly. Yeah, he was pregnant.
And that would another scandal, another moral fAiling for that family if SHE was unwind and pregnant and living with them, right? And presumably he had already may be performed in abortion. So SHE didn't want to go through that through again, despite for obvious desperation.
And you know walter continuing to be attracted to her. Walter remain uninterested in in getting married. He didn't want to tie himself to someone for the rest of his life. He was non committal. He was part of this game at the sport.
It's like you're really not noncommittal because like he lives with you yeah half the time she's always showing up at your door, said you mind as well as fucked .
and marry her and called the day I don't think he's I think he's have in many affairs. I'm sure there there's .
no yeah and it's like you're going to continue to do that.
And also, he was just for the demanding. So I think he was like, i'm attracted to you, but this is a lot you like. I don't want to do this for the rest of my life.
I don't want this to be the only thing for the rest of my life. So by february ninety, no two IT seemed well ahead of, I did yet another one of fluences meltdowns and, you know, crisis. Then this is like two years of this.
yeah. His big half promises to fred burns and his willingness to at least go see a priest about marriage had kept FLorence living in her parents home rather than, you know, a boarding house or the broker. So there's a lot of just like dishonesty here on everyone's part.
It's everyone's so false like this is all just such a facade because it's like fred is like demanding that they get married, not Carrying whether they're love or not you walter is like, I like her. I've attracted to her sometimes we have a nice time, right? I don't want to marry her though and then but he's just trying to keep everybody say ated by being like, okay, i'll just fake IT. I guess i'll just talk to the priest about IT, I guess and i'm like that good but and this .
is not like this is not what you know talking about getting married about life .
is supposed to be no. But as far as he was concerned, he had exceeded the expectations of his responsibility. And he was like, you know what i've given in my I talked to a prize.
We almost got married once. He was ready to end things with FLorence. Finally, without feeling guilty, he was that was the whole thing.
He didn't want to end IT with her and have her end up on the street is. And then he was worried that he was going to have to take her in if that happens. So was like, i'm going to be in this end less cycle.
Yeah so he's like now I feel like i've done my duty. I've tried. It's not working and he's so in fact, by the time the attempted wedding had fAllen through, walter was actually already dating a new girl.
He was just that there. This girl was seventeen year old, roof done, and and he was looking for the easiest way to end things with FLorence and kind of avoid her raf as well. Because remember, yeah, SHE threatened to shoot him with friend's pistol. I hadn't he think he was going to be avoid her. Raf, though, I don't know.
I think dating another girl would be like .
the rather est of fire. A lot of us to be, I think that would .
pack a punch.
Speak from someone who is dated and someone who also started dating another girl while we were dating. Inspires a lot of work, I would think, a lot of work. I would certainly think so much. All the rat, the most last one, can I became less in that moment? So I imagine, yes, yeah.
yeah. I really think of the amErica next to the model .
where they literally we saying, no.

So to lep lip, so walter's relationship with roof began quietly, and so suddenly at the beginning of the new year, and he had spent weeks of sharing roof that he was going to end things with FLorence. He was like, he just gotta figure out how to go about IT without you being in danger. And me being IT like this was actually like a little scary.
You like, i'm scary to do this. So like, I do want to be with you. I am trying. This is, yes. So by the second week of february, walter seemed to be taking the matter more seriously and had started talking with his friends in the bedford avenue, ganging about IT, all of whom, quote, assured him IT was a good move part now, given the gangs penchant for drama, hyrum a very likely that FLorence had some idea of walters and ten ten their relationship. I'm sure one of the other gang members was like, he's going to break up with you girl, yeah like, i'm sure one of like, he's already dating .
someone but there .
was hard of that IT chill must certainly noticed his absence and distance in the recent weeks. Beginning monday, february tenth, SHE began showing up at walter's office every day, demanding the sea walter. But he was typically out of the .
office of the, this is an appealing .
behavior now. And in each time he asked of whaler's office boy, fifteen year old Joseph cribbins is porked found a way to insinuate that walter had received many female visitors at the office, likely intending to irritate her.
Okay.
I was this poor boys and jobs you got to you don't .
know who you're dealing yeah.
Now while this may seem trivial, like, you know, it's just like being a fifteen neural shit, no, walter had in fact never received any other woman other than FLorence in his office. I like that was the true. But by the end of the week, FLorence would come to believe that he was cheating on her with countless anonymous woman, like that anonymous woman who were showing up all.
he was only cheating with one woman.
And whether he was like having other things outside, you know, they won't come to his office, could be said now on the morning of february fourteenth and well turned, his business partner, Harry coin, had a business meeting with a man in patterson, new jersey. And after that they'll had lunch in network uh, that at this lunch they met two Young women. At the lunch side .
is downward you that .
after chatting with the girls for a short time, they all went to a nearby hotel. They all had six, and they all went their separate ways.
They just live the flashes style that the flash it's it's like the party scene in gatsby.
It's all like a think .
of look at us. We're .
literally all like to think of us like, oh my god, like that's that's literally that's IT. Meanwhile, FLorence, while this is going on, had stopped by walter's office. He had, again.
no, just their mumo.
SHE left a note saying he was leaving for detroit that afternoon and had only stopped to say goodbye, FLorence said. SHE actually returned three more times that day, hoping to catch walter girlies.
ed, how you are going to dedit.
And SHE finally caught him on the last visit around five thirty pm. Walter seemed unsurprised to see foreign his office, and they made plans to go out after he closed up the office for the day. And walter was intending to give FLorence a proper send off before he left her detroit.
I don't know if he was like, I guess we'll just fuck more time like that seems like the buy here way. According to maco walters partner Harry co. And who begged walter not to go with FLorence that night and to come out to dinner with him instead oh but not wanting to do anything to upset FLorence just as he was about to you know .
and things and things.
walter dismissed coon's concerns and promised to meet him later that night instead. Even coin was like, I don't know, man, like that sounds .
like he he knew obviously yeah, what he was like but IT sounds like he also had some kind of lake that fear yeah.
he was like, just don't feel good about this. Now, that evening, walter influence checked into the gland island hotel. So you can see why I think what I think, of course, they checked in as john Williams, son and wife of berkley.
just adding insult to injury.
And they were shown to the room by a bellhop named George washington. Shut the food was George washington. And after setting down the couple's bag, washington let the pilot lights on the gas.
Either the asked FLorence whether they would need anything else, and he said, no, thank you, OK. Later around midnight, washington, the smell of gas coming from FLorence in walter's room. Oh, and when he entered to search the area, he discovered walter passed out on the bed.
And FLorence, nowhere to be found. A doctor was called that they tempted to rose walter, who was alive, but only barely conscious at the time of man. Now, this is wild.
This doctor, i'm like, are you? O, K, R? Despite the presence of blood on the pillow case, IT took doctor john swe much longer than I should have to notice that there was a giant wound on walter's head.
why? And even when he did finally notice IT, he assumed he had been from a fall and he was like, it's nothing serious. And at this time, neither hospital staff, staff or doctor sweeney were interested in, quote, causing a fuss.
So they earn out the room and washed the area around water's head wounds been left the room and assumed he would sleep IT off and be fine in the morning. why? yeah? why? So they came in and they were like, wild.
It's weird. There's gas in this room and he's unconscious in this blood on the pillow and he's like, not awake and they were like, oh weird, let's air the room out silly that that happened. Open a window, I guess and then they were just like bbp tube using some anti septic and wash your wound, but not pick your head up.
They literally just washed to the area around the wound, didn't actually look at IT. And he was like, you know, you should do with headwinds, you should sleep them off. But that do in the gas filter of the .
gas fill room, the head wounds of IT. All also the fact that the wife is quite is miss y yeah and man in room yeah think it's a little suspicion, the life that presumed why now.
doctor, this is fine. dr. Sweety, everybody. In the next morning, when hotel staff went back to check on the man with the head wounds in the missing, they walter, unresponsive on the bed, which by then had become saturated with blood from a hole in his head. The fact that IT sounds .
like they probably could have saved this kid's life. Yeah, that's what i'm that is finally fucked up.
Doctor sweeney was called back to the room, and in the light of day, realized that what he had thought was a wound from a fall was actually a gunshot wounds of two, his head. This man was shot in. The head was alive and just left to bleed out.
Oh my god, they could have saved him absolute or at least given a shot. I would say they could have saved him. They could have at least given any kind of shots.
but just the fact that he was still alive when .
they left yeah to believe there was an actual opportunity to save him or try to wow and how awful he just lay there with a bullet in his head left there not able to move or call anyone and just later, wow now doctor sweeney insisted someone call an ambuLance, which like the doctor, everybody uh, but I still had occurred anyone to call the actual fucking police because there was another person in this .
room with him and he a bullet.
Instead, after searching waller's pockets and learning his real identity, someone from the hotel called his office and talk to Harry cohen, his business part, Harry, who in turn called walther's father, and the two rushed to the glass island and up to room twelve, where Thomas Brooks found his son. Ve, but in very bad conditions. So you still alive, responsive, but alive? wow.
Well, the two men waited two hours for the ambuLance to arrive. Two hours. Why did this is new york correct coin? And Brooks searched the room.
They picked up all waters belongings as well as I here come that both men, recognized as belonging to FLorence burn all we knew when the ambuLance had finally arrived in, taken volt to the hospital. Thomas Brooks made the following statement to police, quote, i've expected this for a long time. My boy has been in scrapes with girls before this, and I expected this would happen.
A girl name, FLorence burns, made threats against my son, h. man. Now, the ambuLance transported walter to the hospital.
He was rushed into emergency surgery, and the thirty two calibre slug was removed from his head, but he never gained consciousness and was pronounced the dead at eleven fifteen name. wow. Now, like Thomas Brooks, Harry coin also told police, you should question FLorence s.
Um he was like he was with walter and was, you know they were supposed that's where they were supposed to be that night together like this all it's up and now she's missing. And also Harry was like theyve had a very long, complicated and to multiple relationship when officers arrived at the burn's apartment in flatbush, FLorence didn't seem very surprised to see them. SHE told them that, yes, he did.
No welter Brooks and he had seen him the previous day, but he said after I spoke to him at his office, we parted ways and I didn't seen him since then. Liar, if the officers were suspicious by her initial reaction, they were double suspicious. When, after informing her that walter had been shot, her response was, I wonder, who could i've done? IT, have they found the pistol girl? What curl? what? The officers took FLorence into custody immediately and brought her to the church street station, escorting her directly into the office of captain Helen.
Now SHE had been a informed that he was under arrest and was being charged with a felony, but the police neglected or refuse to inform flows what the charge was or that walter was infected. They didn't tell her that, oh wow. Instead, they asked her to see her hair comes, which he handed over.
And but one of them, he appeared to be missing the back comb, which was precisely the comb that had been discovered in the roman glen island hotel. Remember, he said he saw at the office and never saw him again. Imagine when he was finally informed of the charge against her, FLorence insisted he knew nothing about the shooting.
SHE said, how could I shoot them? I've not seen him since six o'clock. When I left his office, I came right home and arrived at seven thirty o'clock.
My father and mother were at the theater. I saw no one and want to bed. I love, I saw no one, I.
no one, one, no one.
I love the gender, mature to be like no one. Absolutely not one person on planets can confirm this area. And that I went to sleep.
Thank you, and good night. Thank you, and good night. Other than her insistance that he had nothing to do with the shooting, FLorence was generally unCoOperative in an effort .
to get more excuse me.
in an effort to get more information or the catcher er in a lie, the interviewing detective told FLorence that walter had been robbed and in response, FLorence, with one hand bowled into a fist, pounded the desk and said that the bellhop George washington must have done IT well, that little bitch, he also used like racist language to describe when we did IT.
So like, why did I know? Why did I I oh, he is being SHE said.
obviously George washington, he did what I could but obviously George wh. Ingen hadn't taken the money but he did. However, when they talk to a remember FLorence and and when he was brought into the station that day and asked whether he was the one woman who had checked in the hotel with walter Brooks, he's emphatically confirmed that, yes, the bitch was the woman who was in the room.
A remember he was a pain and .
certain that SHE was responsible for the shooting and confident that they weren't going to get much more out of her being very unCoOperative in a dick. Detectives escorted her out of the captains office and took her to a cell in the center street station. IT was at this point that the press got their first look at FLorence burns, and now he was being called an accused murdered you know, he was just getting like the fertile ship and you know, this is the first time that he wasn't really .
liking the attention .
um at one point SHE screamed to her father, father, father helped me. They're trying to take my picture.
honey.
No one is going to help you now. You're Better not yeah. Now, on the morning of february sixteen, th learns appeared before a judge at the center street court and he was wearing dark veil to indicate the chosen morning.
Of course, speaking influences behalf with her defense attorney, Foster backus, a former king's county district attorney who'd gone into private practice after leaving public office. Now as a former da, backus was intimately familiar with the ins announced of the system and knew very well that his clients client wouldn't be court that morning if the authorities didn't have a strong case against. Because of this, he quickly developed a strategy where he would attempt to delay any sentencing or formal charges, giving him time to evaluate the evidence that was against FLorence.
Okay, in the days that followed, the evidence against FLorence came out in multiple pretrial hearings, and IT was likely kind of encouraging the back. This, aside from her hair home discovered in the room and George washington and identification of FLorence as the woman with walter the ninety checked in the case against fluence was pretty like circumstantial. It's true.
The bullet taken from malter head was a match for the calibre of pistol owned by fred burns, but neither the gun used in the shooting or the gun owned by burns could be found. Okay, so that was a problem. So there was nothing for the slug to be compared to, right? Um and I also love that like the fact that that gun was suddenly missing isn't considered us us pretty good proof here.
Like where did you go exactly now? At the same time, George washington and identification had also kind of become a problem for the district. Maybe William je me, although washington was and always would be adamant that flows with the woman who checked into the hotel with walter burke, he'd looked her in the face multiple times.
IT was pointed out that FLorence had been the only woman seen in the hotel that day. And more importantly, washington had made the identification after being brought to the police station where he saw FLorence being questioned. You can do that ah that and I gave the impression that he was a suspect, if not guilty.
The problem with this type of identical is that by asking him to identify flows under those circumstances, he could have naturally assumed her to be guilty. And I contain the I. Exactly the precisely. Now, IT started out as a strong case against FLorence was kind of unraveling a little bit. Although you could have gone to a grand jury to get entitled, he was aware that his arty, shaky case could be completely unna by the unwritten law causing him to lose the case.
According to Virginia ma conal, the unwritten law emerged in the american south in the middle and century, and IT quote started out as a permission for a man to kill a man who had dishonoured raped, seduced or even ruined the reputation of a woman they were related to or intimately connected with. Okay, let me say that one more time so you guys and get back. Because this is a an unwritten law. IT was permission for a man to kill another man who had dishonoured raped, produced or even ruined the reputation of women related to, or intimately connected with that a wild.
And basically, what they're trying to say is that they are going to pin this .
on fred .
burns that they could actually, and he could get away .
with IT because of that. They actually like, say that reputation was dishonoured in some way, so that exactly like that. This is his gun in her name. What now in time, IT was extended to women accused of murder at as well, and was considered a viable defense. So now IT can be like, you dishonoured me so I do and I was, as long as they had committed the crime to protect their decently, isn't this child?
Mama four does not have any decent.
although IT wasn't really a law in the form of legal sense, the unwritten law was more like a temporary and sanity claim OK. And could reason be used to achieve an acquittal? Le, on the grounds .
of self offence. Coco nuts.
but isn't this bananas? Knowing that his case was already somewhat precarious at this time, geo agreed deb cases request for a special session hearing where a judge will determine whether the evidence was strong enough OK. If at any point he changed his mind, he wanted to go to a grand jury back as a surge room.
The D I could go to the grand jy and get in reality, this was just an attempt for book to stalled James investigation and give himself time to put critical evidence or witnesses like bread and henri at a burns out of the prosecutions reach, now agreeing to the special sessions hearing, the first for a woman in new york, by the way, wow. Dream effectively put the responsibility for determining fluences guilt in the hands of the newly appointed judge julius mayor. Mayor's job was to interview witnesses and evaluate the evidence to determine whether he was responsible for walter's death, which meant he had to determine the following one means.
So we're gona means motive and opportunity. You means wolter books was shot the head with a thirty two caliber pistol. So mayor needed to confirm that not only did FLorence burns have access to a thirty for two caliper pistol, but also that you knew how to use one motive, although motive cannot always be arrived at conclusively.
In order to determine guilt, mayor needed to be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that FLorence had a reason to kill the man he frequently impassionate tly and outwardly exclaimed to be in love with an opportunity. Walter was shot in the middle of night in a room at the glen island hotel. Under those circumstances, mayor needed to be confident that either FLorence or someone acting on fluences behalf had been in the hotel room with walter at the time of the shooting.
OK now, given what needed to be establish judge mayor, had a difficult task. Yeah, the gun used to kill walter was never recovered. So there was no way to connect the back of forces still. IT was a well establish fact that fear burns owned handgun of that same calibre so as possible that forms could have used that gun. And then SHE threw IT off crap POS bridge as far as the ability to use IT, the crap as bridge as far as the ability to use IT.
The coroner had examined the wound on wilton's head and found that while there was burn Marks around the wound, there was no powder Marks indicating that the barrel had been placed against his head when the gun was fired, given that the prosecution could easily convincing, argue that one needed any firearms training to have committed this murder because I was right up against that. Like it's not, like, need to. Another thing, the biggest issue was to be the idea to me that would also mean that you are intimately near this man. Yes, if maybe he was asleep, very able. And that's what I think he was sleep and he just pressed to to his head.
Paton has a variety of workout for wherever you are in your fitness journey, holiday era, predrag off meditation error, dry january era, whatever error of your life you're in, pelton has the classes and motivation you need to get after IT. I mean, my will you just get up and do something error. So i've been really focusing on bradlee roses cycling classes.
I'm really getting into some yoga classes, and it's been awesome because this is little thing on each other classes that you can tell how hard IT is. And we're always running on time on helton because whether you need ten, twenty, forty five minutes of you time to sweat or just get grounded, pelton provides flexibility with daily on demand and live classes that fit your schedule in your life. That has been immensely important to me.
Find your push, find your power with pallet on at one pallet on dot com. Now the biggest issue was gonna the identification, placing FLorence at the hotel with walter. After all, if he couldn't be placed at the scene of the crime, are you going to convince the jersey that he was the shooter in his testimony, George washington, not only scribed FLorence perfectly for the judge, he also describe the exact outfit SHE had been wearing when Harry cohen saw her at the office that morning.
Through out the interviewing process, washington story remained consistent, and he appeared to take the process very seriously. But as a black man, he was already suspect in the eyes of many, and considered at that time by these people to be lower intelligence than his White peers at the lust fuck that is used this to his advantage, taking every opportunity to remind the judge and the press of washington s. Race, referring hit to him as different terms, very loaded and sometimes aggressively racist terms, so disgusting. After hearing washington s. Testimony in the arguments against the judge, mayor decided the identification and the circumstances under which I was obtained were too questionable, and he was unwilling to consider IT.
It's also like, why put this poor man through this? If you're just gonna set, they're pick up. And exactly.
George washington looked this woman in the face several time. yeah. He asked her if he needed anything else.
He turned to look right. Animal said, no, right? He knew who this, he described her alfa exactly. And Harry cohen said, yes, that is the office. I saw her in that day .
at the office. I know that yeah.
he wouldn't that there were others who had seen FLorence with walter on the evening. They checked into the hotel, including john earl, the other glen island employee on duty that evening. Unfortunately, URL was frequently mind in the press and described as not as as stute as the bellboy.
So if the bell boys that was stood in my republican humiliating him.
no, also i'm pair of phrasing that sentence because i'm avoiding same racist terms out loud by the way. They would they just went all in in the press. Ah so his testimony and identification, we're equally unhelpful in the prosecution case.
This through me out, these two men saw this. I could identify her and they were like, no, we're races. So it's now wow.
Now finally, as the question of motive, there was a great deal of here, say, and circumstantial testimony that supported the widely health belief that walter influence had a difficult relationship and that FLorence was generally a difficult person. Walter's mother, mary, testified length about her interactions. Member, member, mrs.
Brooks went to on yourself. SHE testified that length about her interactions with FLorence during the time he lived with them, telling mayor that not only did FLorence regularly threatened to kill walter, but he said, quote, IT seemed to happen every time they met, every single day, wow. But when, for clarification, mrs. Brooks acknowledged that he had been exaggerating when he said the threats were a daily occurrence and that IT wasn't as often as that.
I mean, just the fact that he said too many .
exactly the fact .
that he felt confident enough to say that in front of his parents is fucked up.
Yes, ian mary also had doing acknowledge that despite the frequency with what which FLorence had threatened, her son SHE had never done IT in front of anyone else. So there was no one else who cook corruption's. The final piece of testimony on which germs case arrested was the hair comes discovered in the room, although the comb matched those worn by FLorence on the day were arrest and would have accounted for the missing back home comes of that type ubiquitous at the time of the murder. And there was no way to prove that the coal in the room along the fluence, even though he was missing that exact time.
Did anybody also ever ask her like where you .
go in the middle night? No, no.
He just started to say that I was never there.
I think SHE was just like, I wasn't there. Was that what you think she's like? I met with him in his office.
I left him at six. I was home by seven thirty. No one saw me, but I won't right to sleep. And then the next morning, shoes on, so far as anyone was concerned, he was asleep. Wow, they had to tie.
This comes directly to her and and that IT wasn't really value because they couldn't use like they sound like reason hair and should right point. So it's like and even still that's like tough that even though he was that exact home that he was wearing in her hair when they interview her, I still couldn't use IT. After considering the evidence and testimony, judge mayor came to the following conclusions. One threats, flu had a herd regarding shooting water were relevant because they had happened too long before the murder. And we're set under a specific context to a specific person, and we're never heard by anyone else.
He said that he was gonna shoot him. He ended up shot dead. yeah.
Sh'd also threatened to kill another boyfriend of her.
Other people had heard that right. So it's like pattern. wow.
The number two, the discovery and identification of the hair found in the room at the grand ut gn island was irrelevant .
because IT matched the comes of thousands of .
women in new york. I guess I have to like, except but he was missing the, but IT was her, obviously, but it's just like you, so frustrating. Number three, George washington's identification of fluences was values because the lineup and identification process was so deeply flawed that IT .
couldn't trust. That really sucks that they are .
in a number four, the statements made by FLorence to detectives that were incriminating or suggested he knew more than he was saying were also thrown out because of the circumstances under which they were taken. Detectives lied and with held various facts about the case, like not telling her what felony he was being charged either that walter was dead. So the comments could not be taken as a factual statement.
Those boss, everybody fucked up here. Now, in this last point, mcconnel tes that there is no law prohibiting investigators from using deception to obtain a statement or compassion for a suspect. So the statements made by FLorence to police could very well have been used against her. This wasn't the law. So him saying they use deception against her so that those weren't practical statements, no.
that's not the law. And IT wasn't the law. Then they different if they said, like they bully her into .
a confession and out of going to kill you if but they were like they just didn't tell her access .
to the chess or you know .
like they sent certain things that were could be deemed to deceptive. There's no law that says they can do that so that that being thrown out of the trial is not right because legally IT should have been let back in. But mccane suggests, quote, the judge needed something to hang this had on from illegal same point in order to apply beyond written law.
Even though the burns case didn't fit the typical narrative of of Annie, Young woman seduced in abuse by a scheming man, they've going to use IT anyway. Given walter's history as a member of the bedford avenue gang and the number of times he'd been arrested for fraud schemes, IT was very easy for any defense torney to use the unwritten law as a self defense claim, especially when the evidence against the accused was flimsy and circumstantial. It's not that fsi. It's really not .
circumstantial. sure. Yes, not so much.
Now without new evidence, they've been little point in indicating and trying FLorence for waters murder and Jerome new IT jero told the press, I still believe that flaunts burns killed walter books, but I have not got at the evidence to prove IT. We presented every bit of evidence we had.
Drum signalled his intent to keep the case open and see additional evidence saying, quote, to bring the one who did the killing to account is still one of the unfulfilled ties of this office. We will try to get more evidence now, despite his insistence that they were gone to continue pursuing this justice for walter Brooks judge mayor's decision in the special session essentially brought the case to an end. A corners inquest followed a few weeks after the hearing, during which the coroner and jury heard more or less the same testimony presented in the special session.
And after reviewing the evidence and testimony, the jury concluded that the said walter's Brooks came to his death on the fifteenth day of february in one nine hundred and two at hudson street hospital by a penetrating pistol short wound of the head inflicted on the fourteen th day of no a february one thousand and note two at the glen island hotel by a revolver in the hands of some person. Unknown to the jury following the outcome of the inquest, Williams Jerome gave a statement to the press saying, for the present at least, the cases closed, of course, no murder cases actually closed. I shall be on the lookout for new developments all the time, and the slaying of Young books may yet be found. Now, although the hearing had come to an end, the public lx interest in FLorence in the burn's family continued, but fred and Henry at the burns were modified. They thought he had shamed them before.
modified by the .
attention and furious with Lawrence for once again, bringing shame to their family. And for her part, FLorence hardly ever left the house. And rather than take any responsibility for her situation, SHE just grew resentful of everyone else SHE believe was to blame for everything that has happened.
Her like, girl, you shot of me. As far SHE was concerned, if her parents hadn't been so strict, or if the bad road avenue gang had been such scoundrels or Harry coin hadn't tried to interfere with her relationship with walter, none of this happened to fuck Harry coin u. He tried to gether.
He tried, get well title, like not me with her yet. He was pissed about IT. And he shouldn't have exactly by the fall of nineteen or two, FLorence had grown tired of being a prisoner in her own home.
And he had a op ed with Charles wildering, about ten years old, living her had doc. Like the members of the bedford avenue gang, wildering came from a prominent family. Rather than take a vange of the opportunities afforded to him, he chose a life of leisure and petty crime.
A year before the marriage, wild rer had been arrested for passing bad checks at hotels. It's like money. You literally come from rich family. After hearing testimony from wilder k's friends and girlfriend, all of who lied for him, the judge dismissed the charges. Deming him a gentleman, and hard luck would fall in among bad association, please.
A few months later, in an attempt capitalized on her notoriety, FLorence accepted in an offer from a vod vill company willing to pay her fifteen hundred dollars to appear on stage. And that was a lot of money, maco points out. Most people believe Florance had killed walter Brooks, and most did not mind that you got away with IT, but making mind off of IT was crossing the lines.
IT surely didn't help that the theatre company built her as the most persecuted in most beautiful woman in america, I don't know. But not surprisingly, forms stable on the stage was a disaster. Oh god, he had no talent.
SHE had no determination. SHE refused to rehearse and was generally very unpleasant to everybody around her. Critics called her a dismal and pitted ble pedia failure would even do. And they called her unGraceful in her movements. I did, but he won't reverse.
So SHE just fucked me to everybody.
So SHE just everybody hated, they probably really go break a leg, literally erly break a leg. Fla stage career ended after three years, just around the time her marriage to wilda k began falling apart in december nineteen.
Notes just i'm so the fact that lasted three years.
three in january nineteen, seven, back in with her parents claiming that he know her husband had been unfaithful then he began sending postcards to his employer, claiming among among other things, that he was a more feed feed, hoping the accusations would .
rule in his career jesus .
could SHE SHE doesn't stop after the collapse of her marriage, fluences life continued downward spiral, living mostly on money sent her by her father. SHE began drinking heavily, frequently caused drunken scenes in public. Whenever he was recognized around town, people were often surprised that he was um no longer what they had seen in the papers but instead he was in shambles at this point carmon's A A dirty, rumbled clothing, just not taking care of herself.
In the fall of nineteen thousand ten, FLorence and her boyfriend Edward Brooks, which is no relation a, were arrested for running a scheme known as a badgered game in which a woman tricks an unsuspecting person into a compromising position, then extorts money from them in exchange for their silence. Ck, the victim in this case was a man named Charles hurlbert, and he had for months been giving FLorence money under the assumption they were involved in a romantic relation. Eventually, burns and Brooks forced her heroes t to sign a declaration of being in.
He had been guilty on various occasions of degrading practices with women. wow. Now FLorence in books were both arrested and put on trial good, after which he took a jury only twelve minutes to find both guilty twelve and eight, sentenced to seven to fourteen years in prison.
Good FLorence was released from prison in August one thousand and eight and continued that downward spiral. Al, in one thousand nine and twenty two, SHE pleaded guilty to violating the Sullivan act, which required new york anode owners to Carry a license, and was sent back to prison. How future this woman get a gun.
And was paroled two years later, in march one thousand and forty four firefighters, nineteen and forty four, wow, I know firefighters responded to a house fire at the home of FLorence and her fourth husband, john stack, of each. After forcing their way into the home, they found FLorence unconscious on the kitchen floor and director of the house into a hospital where SHE was revived and sent on her way. This was the last time FLorence's name appeared in the newspaper until her death in August nineteen and forty nine.
No cause of death is given, and she's described only as loving wife of john. what? And that is born burns in the murder of water books.
Wow, wo I think I said, wow, at least forty nine times.
seventeen, forty four. There's just a fire at our house. They find FLorence and conscious on the kitchen floor.
They drag her us out, bringing through hospital revival center on their way. And no one hears from american until SHE does that so early. what? Like five years later, four years later. yeah.
And nobody even knows .
how SHE die. No, no cause .
of death is given. That's chilling. Isn't that .
bunker chilling? what? What a woman question mark. truly.
Then that was a crazy case.
I was very captivating. IT was it's a wild case that just got a lot of like what the holes .
go on here yeah I feel so bad for for his family. I know that's just the fact that they could see IT coming .
and that they were trying to, you know, kind of save him from IT yeah .
and all of these friends .
and everything yeah just I know I feel it's it's not like any of the bedford avenue gang were like good and people one .
deserves to die like it's trying .
to away from this situation you know, just like .
that's crazy.
That could be a movie I really could like a really could you could see this being like of such a visually wild movie to watch. absolutely. SHE really got away with that.
SHE sure did. Well, that's grazing. And we hope keep listening. We you keep IT well.
but that's .
not whether you do anything fall instead in this case because why we cause how we wow 喂。
