And at the time, he was also taking correspondence courses in teaching through the state manual training, Normal school. Look at this bad should just do in IT all. yeah.

Now I thought, and justice marriage in one thousand and thirteen had gotten ough to kind of a rocky start. They were married in an age. And this is going to block your mind where school teachers were expected to be single women.

So ever had to keep her marriage to Jessie a secret for years so as not to affect their income. So I feel like you can't win. No, because because you either single in a sponsor or your married and shunt anyways because you're not supposed to be married.

Isn't that strange that you were a school teacher? You weren't supposed to be married? Incredibly done. Yeah, one thousand thirteen men don't get that.

But despite her work ethic and commitment to providing for others, apple crown believed that kansas was just a desert, and he wanted way more for her children than what they were going to have working the families already struggling farm. I love them. I do too.

And SHE didn't know that at the time, unfortunately. But her near obsession with self improvement and destined for poverty would have a considerable influence, specifically on her daughter in now, unfortunately, tragedy struck the family in one thousand nine hundred and eighteen. One five year old Jesse junior died in the middle of the night.

He choked to death on his own fluid is what they said, oh my god. But today, most likely we would assume that he probably had in a monia and didn't have like the proper treatment at the time. That's horrific.

But the death of her child caused ethel to turn away from her first emotionally and then physically. SHE was just distorted after losing a child, and SHE just had this unrelenting guilt that he thought the the her child's death was her fault in some way. Yeah, I mean, I can understand like IT absolutely wasn't.

I can understand why he thought that. And he convinced herself self that if he had the money to take her son to a hospital, his death could have been prevented. Now so sad and is, in that line of thinking, eventually grew into the belief that the whole thing could have been avoided if SHE was able to get out of kansas.

And i'd never married a farmer. So SHE SHE put on herself, SHE had so much guilt. And then, because of that girl, SHE to started resenting everything and everybody around turn, of course.

And despite friends and family urging, heard think of her husband, they gave her daughter, think of what you do still have, and they desperately need you. SHE was like, I can't do this. And that's when SHE enrolled in the Normal school and moved several hours away to pursue her education.

Oh, wow, SHE just needed to get away from at all. And maybe I was like the best thing for her at that point, because I don't know that he was going to be great at home. I think he had to take that break but at the same time, it's like you kind of care you know it's it's a catch twenty to either way.

Now the extreme poverty and emotional tommee of the early days, that early years sadly didn't improve much. As Andrew older, by the time he was ten, her parents relationship had just completely deteriorated to the point that justice finally did ask fell for a divorce, which back then was huge, like nobody got to, but at that point there had been so many affairs and emotional betrayal s that respectability didn't matter much enough. I was like, yeah, sign up please.

I'm good. Like, so SHE packed up her daughter and their few belongings and moved back to pittsburgh and pitzer g. Kansas in the girls that followed as well met and married another man, whom he also divorced not long after, and SHE and and relocated again, this time to kansas city, where etho actually opened her own taxi business that grew to employ several drivers and a ton of company oil cars.

So she's taken head after hit but he's she's still stuck in a long get him back up the move to kenza city got them out of the crushing poverty of kansas farm life. But IT did little to improve. And our ethos lives like emotionally, I felt, was a way, working day and night to comfort or to support herself and her daughter.

So I M found an escape in the movie houses and film magazines of the day, all presenting this glamorous life in hollywood, hollywood, hollywood. But now SHE was just determined, defined for herself. SHE wanted to be on the big screen. SHE wanted to get out of kansas, wants to be a SHE wanted a me.

Now that determination to find her way out of poverty was only strengthen then by the hardships and just terrible time that he saw her mother go through every single day as a single woman and a female business owner, I thought was subject to all kinds of methods, I and harassment, and most of which came from her male employees, her employees, her employees, because they resented having to work for woman and just too fuck about didn't have any reservations about showing IT. That's absurd. It's like, cool.

You're fired. You're tiny. Bye now by the time he read her twenty first birthday and I crawl had reinvented herself as ann crawl, aspiring model and movie star.

No longer content with the impoverish life in kansas city that he was living, SHE took A A move and decided to go to denver to stay with her own and cousins. And while he lived in denvers, SHE actually managed to secure a few jobs modeling for catalogues before. SHE eventually returned to kansas city, now more restless than ever, because SHE had a small taste of what he had been dreaming of.

Yeah, SHE wasn't content to just dream of wealth and fame more. SHE was like, I gotto make this happen. yeah. So SHE finally made the decision at this point to move to new york city. Just a few months later, the new york in the big city of the bigger apple.

And he figured, you know, I did make some connections, and denver, maybe those will pay off once I get to new york in athole. Obviously hated to see her daughter go, but at the same time, this was what he wanted for him to get out of cancer in term, experience big things and have the life that effort didn't get. yeah.

So SHE talked to him before he left and told her, never talked to strange men, never look at them. Passed day light on the street. I mean, that's good.

Good advice. Sound advice. And with that advice to spend, SHE gave. And I love this because I was picture, it's like a movie thing SHE gave in this bag of five dollar bills that total out to about four hundred dollars, oh my god.

And one of the cars from the taxi company and SHE watched as Andrew out of kansas. So SHE just handed her daughter this bag of cash that you've been saving. And what to test that? That's a mom shit.

Nobody was expecting her at the agency. You shouldn't have a point or anything like that. He was walking and the secretary was like, okay, like wanting to take a seat until somebody you available to speak with you but by six thirty that night, everyone had left for the day.

The end was like he was asked to leave so he said they're the whole day and no one was came like coming out to talk to SHE was committed. So he returned to the next day. And the next day, the next day, in the same thing, SHE arrived.

Ed, right? When they opened, take a seat, someone will be able to talk to you like when they can. No one. And then finally, on the fourth day of sitting and waiting, john powers agree to see john powers like, has he didn't refuse to hire her, but he did tell her that he would need a nose job in order to succeed with his agency.

He was like, the rest of you fine, but your nose is a little an awful world, truly like, you know what? SHE never really did managed to get the big, glamorous modeling jobs that he hoped for. But he did managed to find success at the power's agency as one of the more popular models for SOS. The tooth pace and like home and beauty products kind of thing.

By september of one thousand and forty, SHE was covering all of ethos medical bills in hospital bills, and he was spending almost all of her time by her mom side to make up, I think, for the time that he was away. My daughter now know like, but the sad thing was because he was spending all this time by apple side all the progress SHE had made in new york and all the connections that he had were slowly slipping away. And now he was faced with a decision to stay in kansas with her mom or return to new york and and was like, I can't stand and can't just like, yes, not what I want for myself.

Too much progress. I've made too much progress. This isn't what my mom wants for me.

So SHE borrowed money from my friend again. And SHE had effect transferred to a special unit at the new york hospital. Oh, my good is. And also these friends I know dam, which makes you think like obviously and had to be like someone have a good person yeah at least he definitely had to you said at least at, at least at this point, maybe he was the only way through I don't know who knows, but again, like you said, having friends like that does tell you who you are as a person but you know people will see you, right? So in the short amount of time that you've been away, unfortunately, legal said things in new york had changed for in the medical bills, had taken a serious financial toll.

Which forced her to give up her pent house apartment on east fifty history and moved to a studio apartment on east fifty six three and most of the personal and professional connections that he had made during her time and set to music. I either moved on to other productions or gone out to hollywood to try the the teacher I there luck in the film industry which is what he really wanted to do ah by the end of one thousand forty and he still hadn't found any steady work and her expenses, mostly due to paying ethos medical bills. We're threatening to send back to kansas if SHE didn't find something reliable soon.

I smell a little desperation here. Well, as luck would have IT in december of one hundred forty two and heard that the monte carlo, the monte carlo, monte carlo, a small exclusive nightclub just a few blocks from her apartments, who can venial? Now, working at the monticola was a far cry from the dreams of starting that and had for herself.

But as one of them, premier nightclubs in new york, I say I was like the nights b IT was. And of course, because I was and attracted a good amount of stars from stage and screen oh yeah so he was still within that circle even though he wasn't quite one of just hang in the fridge that's perfect to describe IT. Now IT was during one of these uh, late night floor shows that am cop, the eyes of a man called William would word senior.

He was a wealthy banker and race horse enthusiasts I I got last night. Race horses just keep making an appearance, so they really love a race horse. Yeah, I do.

And IT was a nurse from the york hospital calling to tell her that ethel had died peacefully ten minutes earlier after he had left, right after he had left, like he probably died, wallin was on her ray home, which, like, I understand why that doctor thought that he was yeah, you should rest. Nobody could ever know. But it's like and it's also that's why it's like don't even tell people to go home and rest k, because you just don't know.

Yeah, that's nothing. So on march twenty years and a boarded a train back to kansas for her mother's funeral, the drab landscape in poverty of her hometown felt IT always felt suffocating to end. But this time, specifically, IT was just overwhelmingly suffocation.

And IT wasn't that he didn't love her family, her and her cousins and everything, but being in their presence reminded her of where he had come from and where SHE desperately didn't want to return. This really is like a movie IT is I know, or like some kind of like many series honestly and and IT will be no, there you go. But SHE ended up spending a total of forty eight hours in cancer.

SHE went to the funeral he gave her mother's ology visited with family and friends the whole deal, but then SHE got the hell out of there. And before leaving, SHE asked her cousin paul to keep an eye on ethos grip for her. Make sure IT was like me tidy all the time, forty five day on right now.

And paul said, well, once you be coming back and like, are you coming back? And he said, i'll be back soon. But this afternoon, SHE bought ted a train for new york.

And SHE never ever came back to answer, yeah, I could told to that there was a nothing in canes for after that I want a terrible last memory to have being a mom. exactly. The U.
