SEC Media Day attendees announced GMAC. How much do you ever look into this, read into this, as far as guys who are included, guys who are left off? Does it mean anything to you ever about any real significance of who's on the list, off the list? I usually just look at how many kickers and punters. Because when I see that, that's when I find out whether or not we're going to have a good week or a bad week. Oh, so it's quick for you. Okay. Yeah. It's all it takes.

I actually don't read a ton into it. I used to probably put a little more into it than I do now. But it feels like now it's more, I don't know, like for instance when Arkansas sends Talon Green, that's anointing him as their starting quarterback, right? I mean, we're all acknowledging that. But were we kept in suspense at that point anyways? I really don't know. I don't think so.

Were you? No, not really. But I do feel like it's a little bit odd that you're going to bring somebody to media days that's been with your program for, what, six months? I mean, you're going to come represent our team and our program, and most of the guys at the facility probably don't even really know you that well. Not that it gets him, just that you're going to go be one of the representatives and represent

We don't even really know you. And you haven't put the uniform on yet. Right. That part, I think, is a little bit weird. But that's kind of where we're at. I mean, Blake Chapin's going for Mississippi State. Yeah. It's kind of where we're at, though. It's more situational than it is. It's more circumstantial with where we're at in the times than it is a reflection on

It being weird. I don't disagree, but it makes sense now with where we're at. It's definitely kind of what it is and sort of where we are as far as how things are going to go and how things operate in today's college football. So it's a little different. It's odd. It's a little strange, but, you know, hey, that's...

It's kind of what it is. So your SEC media day attendees for Alabama, Jalen Milrow, Tyler Booker, Malachi Moore. No real surprises there for the Crimson Tide. No. Pretty cut and dry, I would think. I don't even know who else would be an option, frankly, besides those three. Arkansas, Andrew Armstrong, Talon Green, Landon Jackson. Landon Jackson there last year, but as we just mentioned, Talon Green, a little bit of an interesting name. Auburn, Peyton Thorne, Eugene Asante, Keldrick Falk, and...

I don't feel like any huge surprises here. You thought maybe a Jarquez Hunter, maybe somebody on that offensive line. You had a tight end, had a pretty good year last year possibly, but I think you had options. I don't think there's a big surprise there. Anything from an Auburn perspective surprise you? No. Good that they're going to take Peyton Thorne, though. We know he's going to be the guy, but you show more confidence. You can put him in front of the media. He'll get some hard questions.

So, I mean, I think it shows some growth and confidence in him. But I also think, too, I mean, you want someone –

that can properly articulate everything that's going on in the program. So you kind of take that into account too. And quarterback, you just touch every position. I mean, whether you want to or not, you're involved with everybody. So I do think it's helpful sometimes when quarterbacks come because the quarterback can speak on what's going on in the running back room, the wide receiver room, the offensive line room, because you work with all three. I think sometimes when you're at a skill position,

you're kind of isolated in your little skill position bubble without thinking a whole lot about some of the other positions. So I think it makes sense. When in doubt, a quarterback is the most beneficial person to take just because they can speak on more positions.

Florida Grammer, Shamar James, Montrell Johnson. Those are three of your known commodities, three of your leaders on that team. Carson Beck, Mikel Williams, Malachi Starks for Georgia. I don't feel like any surprise there. We all think Mikel Williams is going to have a breakout year. Health has been a little bit of an issue with him. Starks, leader on the back end of that defense. Beck, leader of the football team.

Kentucky, Marquez Cox, loves seeing an offensive lineman go. Had a really good year last year. Probably flying under the radar a little bit heading into this season. Derek Jackson, linebacker. Dion Walker, defensive lineman. LSU, Garrett Nussmeyer, Mason Taylor, Harold Perkins. I did feel like this one was a little bit odd as far as who you're taking here for LSU. Who would you take otherwise?

Well, if I'm not mistaken, Will Campbell wore the patch last year, right? Yeah, but I mean, Harold Perkins is going to wear seven. Nussmeyer is your quarterback.

And I don't know. If you're trying to get more O'Lyman there, I can understand why. There's like two or three that are going in the whole conference. What's the deal with that? Well, there's never usually a ton. I actually think they're fairly well represented. I counted five O'Lyman. But it's – I don't know. I mean, Will Campbell wore the seven patch last year, kind of thought that he's the leader of the football team.

uh just figured you know maybe he was going to be one of those guys but it's listen i'm not mad at it just kind of it is what it is uh old miss jackson dartrey harris jared ivy this was going to be a little bit of an odd one regardless but um

Dart, Harris, two of the best purchasing positions in the league. You mentioned Blake Chapin at Mississippi State, Albert Reese, offensive lineman. There he goes, another one. John Lewis, linebacker. Missouri, Luther Burden, Brady Cook, Christian Williams, defensive lineman. Oklahoma, Jackson Arnold, Danny Stutzman, Billy Bowman. That's about exactly what you would hope for and think was going to go there. South Carolina, Alex Huntley, Luke Doty, Debo Williams.

Luke Doty, an interesting one. Luke Doty, very interesting. How long has he been in college? 17 years. Seriously, I think he started, I think when I called to South Carolina, he gave it 2016, he was there. I think you played against him. Could have. He was red-shirted that year. He's been here so long. No, but he played anyways. It was one of his four games. That's how long he's been there. Tennessee will take Cooper Mays, Keenan Peely, Amari Thomas. What's the problem with that one? There's no quarterback on the team.

On the roster. But yeah, he's never started a game. I feel like he did start the bowl game. I know, but that doesn't count. He started the spring game. Jackson Arnold's going to, and Garrett Nussmeier's going to, all examples in which you can compare to an extent with what Nico's doing at Tennessee. But there's already, I feel like with Nico, there's so much hype.

More hype with him. Hey, I'll be lying if I'm not reading into it some. Myself, I mean, I'm putting together my top 25 right now and they're going to be in the top 10. I'm really a believer in Tennessee this year. Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe I'm

you know, drinking the tea leaves, but I don't know, man, I think, I think Nico's that good. I think he's got a chance to be that good. So maybe it's a way to just kind of calm things down a bit. Don't want to put too much weight on his shoulders and have him start answering questions about where he's going to leave his Heisman.

I'm not going to go that far as far as Heisman just yet. That's what I'm saying. I am with you on Tennessee, though. I'm gaining confidence. I have some personal momentum for them. And what I feel like is interesting on this list is two of these three, I think if Tennessee is going to make a push for the playoff, are absolutely must-have players. Injuries that they cannot afford to have. Cooper Mays, Keenan Peely. You cannot lose them.

I think the linebacker depth, off-the-ball linebacker depth, is a problem for Tennessee this year. And I think center depth is a big problem this year. And Mays has been dinged up. Is center depth always a problem, though? Who has multiple centers? But there are other teams that could slide a guy down. I think if Georgia lost their center, you could slide Tate Ratliff down there. You'd be okay. But I think Cooper Mays, because of how much he does when they go fast...

And the other guys they've tried to play there, it's just a significant drop-off. And where it becomes a significant drop-off is not how they get guys blocked or what they're physically capable of. It's getting everybody else doing the right things. Right. And handling everything at the line of scrimmage. There's not a lot of guys that can do that. Yeah. And Cooper does that really well. I just think those are two must-have players for Tennessee as far as health. I know there's a lot of them, and we can talk quarterbacks and this, that, whatever, but just –

Those two are critical for that football team if they're going to make a push for the playoff. But I'm with you as far as I think Tennessee could be a really good team. Texas. Do you think the reason why they're not bringing Nico is because they're just trying to calm things down a bit? Yeah, just avoid some distraction maybe. And I also think too, like, hey, Keenan Peely, we need you, man.

Cooper Mays, you are a big part of this football team. Amari Thomas, our defense line should be pretty good. We want to represent that part of our football team as well. And two, I do think a lot of this is what's been happening behind the scenes. Leadership, guys showing up, doing the right things. You want to reward certain guys a little bit. So different coaches look at it different ways. Sure. Texas, Quinn yours, Kelvin Banks, Jadae Barron.

are going to be there. I think people are going to be really surprised with Quinn Ewers. I'm just going to tell you right now, you're going to get a lot of people that are going to say, man, I didn't realize that guy was the demeanor and didn't realize people are going to have a totally different perception of him than what they're going to get. But I think it's good that he's going to be there. Johnny Barron's going to steal the show there. That dude is hilarious. Have you ever met him? Yeah, he's been with us. Yeah, good dude. Fun guy. That dude thinks he is the man.

And he ain't scared to talk about it. He's going to provide some quality clips. I think he will be, of the players that were announced yesterday, he'll be among the most popular with some of the one-liners that will likely come to fruition. Texas A&M, here's another offensive lineman for you. Trey Zune is going to be there. Taron York, linebacker, and Shamar Turner. I'm excited that Shamar Turner is going to be there. I don't think he's getting enough buzz going into the year. Well, given the buzz that Skorton's getting, it's like people forgot that Shamar's even there.

I saw Gordon like in the top 10 of a draft the other day. I don't, he's going to be good. I, I think there's a real chance that he's going to be real good. I think you could look at their defensive line. And if you told me right now, Greg, I think Texas is going to the best defensive line in the sec. I'm not going to push back on you. I'm not, I'm not going to necessarily agree with you, but I'm not going to push back on it with not just what Shamar can bring. Uh,

Shamar Turner, but Shamar Stewart, Skorton, and DJ Hicks. They've got four guys that can go. Back to Tennessee, no James Pierce. Yeah. Interesting. Vanderbilt, Gunnar Hansen, offensive lineman, Langston Patterson, linebacker, CJ Taylor, safety. Okay. We'll move on from that. Those are your attendees. Whoa, whoa. I have some thoughts on that one. I would love to hear them.

I'm excited to see him. I want to hear what they have. It always makes me a little uncomfortable when they get the players from Vandy and they're like, what's your GPA? Burns will pull them to the side set. What are you studying? Dude, ask a football question. What's the hardest class? Do you walk or bike to class? Burns, ask a football question. Do you have a motorized scooter? Are they allowed to ride motorized scooters anymore as players? It depends on the place, I believe.

Some yes, some no. They probably need to with all the construction on campus, at least the stadium. Especially there. Yeah. Also depends on the heat. We know Alabama heat and humidity can be brutal. Don't let it affect your home and family. Keep them comfortable with an affordable train cooling system. Train is our official partner here at JOX. They've been recognized as America's most trusted brand 10 consecutive years. Find a comfort specialist near you at train.com. All right. We got John Williams coming up at 8 o'clock.

Oklahoma podcast. He has an interesting thought on Oklahoma's most important game of the year. We'll talk to him about that. We'll get to our top three at the end of this hour. We'll get bad about it at the end of the second hour. Chris Vanini with us at 9 a.m. Group of five teams that can compete for a playoff spot. We'll discuss that with him. Also, this Blake Anderson situation at Utah State continues to be odd. He'll give us the latest there on what's going to happen as they have informed him that he will be terminated. And he and his attorneys say, no, we will not.

So that back and forth has been happening. But I want to take a couple of these names that we've been talking about that are going to attend SEC media days and ask this question. We hit around it and hinted around it a little bit yesterday. But if we just flat out went, and like Greg has brought up before, I'm not talking about the Heisman Trophy and who's going to win the Heisman or a Heisman favorite because that thing has become something totally different. It's a popularity contest for the three or four best teams in the country. That's not what I'm talking about.

Pound for pound best football player in America right now.

I mentioned it a little bit on Paul's show yesterday when I filled in for him. We didn't get to the discussion yesterday. There's an interesting reason why I bring it up, and I'll share that with you also. Share with our listeners, if they need a golf cart, though, exactly who they should call. It'd be Iconic Carts. Iconic Carts will get you taken care of in one of their new Evolution Ordinago carts. Tons of options in these things, man. I mean, touchscreen controls, killer sound system. You got the lithium power. They got so many different upgrades that you can go with.

that you'll really enhance your experience at the beach, the lake, around the neighborhood if you go and check out one of these brand-new golf carts from Iconic Carts. They also have some that you can rent, so you can kind of test drive it before you buy and see whether or not you need a 4 or a 6 or if you just want to go with the regular 2. Plus, to make it easier on you, one of my biggest concerns with a golf cart is where do I get it taken care of? Where do I get it maintained? Well, they have master technicians everywhere.

who are qualified to work on all makes and models of carts and off-road vehicles. Two locations to make it easy on you in downtown and in Chelsea. You can check them out online at iconiccarts.com. Who would you have as pound for pound the best college football player in the country entering the 2024 season? We'll discuss it next on Mac and Cube in the morning. Catch up with all things McElroy and Kublik in the morning by subscribing to the podcast. Mythically, he's grown. He's almost like a little bit bigger than...

A player, right? Like the myth of Bo Jackson. Like, rate, and download the show from the Jock Cup or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, welcome back in. McElroy and Kubrick in the morning, Tuesday, July 9th, 718, right here on Jocks 94.5. Saw a tweet over the weekend and wanted to sort of have this conversation because I think, number one, there are different ways you can look at it.

It's going to have different context for a lot of different folks and different meaning for some different folks. I think a lot of people immediately, they're going to look at it one of two ways, Heisman trophy or NFL draft, a number one top five pick, whatever that's going to be. And we know not only the best player gets taken number one overall, because there are different needs for different teams and certain guys have to go. And we know that different positions have different values. But when you think about the best player pound for pound in college football, uh,

And I do think there have been a lot of years, Greg, when it would be a pretty easy answer. Like, I'll take that guy right now. No questions asked. What position do they usually play, though? Defensive line, quarterback, receiver, I would say, are probably the top three. I don't know. It's so funny for me. Best football player to me is always middle linebacker or safety. Like a hard-hitting safety. Like Bullard last year would be. Like, if I need a pound-for-pound football player.

I always think safety or middle linebacker. I might have taken one of his teammates over. You know what I'm saying, though? Like the way he played. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Like I just think like. Here's what I think about. Specialist players I don't think about. I think like if I want to take that safety and make him play slot, running back, linebacker, I can probably make him play all these different positions. When you say best football player, to me, the first thing that comes to mind is you got to do more than one thing really well. That's it.

If you're a guy that, you know, you're kind of a go-ball specialist and you've got speed and you catch the ball down the field, like let's go say an Anthony Schwartz at Auburn. I know he would have never been in the discussion for this, but just because you run past people doesn't really allow me to say, oh, okay, you're the best. And even just as a receiver, like that's why Luther Burton is going to probably be ahead of a lot of other guys is because what he does without the ball in his hands, it would put him ahead of a lot of other guys.

LSU puts a hype video out with kind of highlighting Will Campbell over the weekend and Jacob Hester. He quotes it and says, he's the best football player in the country, not just the best left tackle, but the best player in general. Which, of course, listen, I'm fine for an O-lineman getting some love. And there have been many years when I have felt like an offensive lineman has been the best football player in the country.

I thought at times before his illness, I don't think his last year he was, but sophomore year I thought there were times Trey Smith was the best player in America. There was a full season that Quentin Nelson was the best player in college football. Orlando Pace was the best player in college football. I don't think it was debatable. He was. He didn't do anything in the pros.

like he's got a jacket that would say otherwise. First ballot? But there have been times. It's going to be tough because there's going to be so many other guys that get the football and allow us to see their skill set and do different things. But

Let's just kind of start to group together the list of guys that you allow into that conversation. And one of the reasons I thought it was interesting is because some of the guys that we just brought up that are going to be attending SEC media days, I feel like should at least be discussed or at least be in that conversation like Carson Beck's in that conversation. Right. He's really good. He's up there.

He is he's going to be one of those guys that's discussed as one of the best players in America. He's going to be there. Luther Burton, pound for pound. Got to be in that conversation. Right. Best best just football player. Really good football player. Malachi Starks. I mean, you brought up you brought up Bullard last year. I think Starks, if you're talking about versatility, doing a lot of things really well. He's probably in the discussion. Yeah. To be on that list. I got a problem with that.

Trey Harris, Ole Miss receiver. Good player. I don't know if I'd have him in the discussion. Probably not there, not on that list. Yeah, like best player. Shamar Turner, is he in that discussion for you? Really good player, yeah. I mean, he'd be top 15. I'd have him in the discussion. All right, so one other in the SEC that's interesting. Right now, right this moment, do you have him in the conversation for pound-for-pound best football player in America, Harold Perkins?

Yes. Pound for pound, I think he could be very easily. You've got to go on talent and explosiveness and capabilities. It's there. He's got it. He's got to put it together. I'm not saying he doesn't, but your list loses credibility if he's not at least under consideration. One of the problems with me with Will Campbell, and I love Will Campbell. I think he's great. But you've got an argument on your hands if he's the best tackle on his team. Emory Jones is a really good player, too.

And I think we mentioned Marquez Cox at Kentucky. Ernest Green at Georgia, I think when it's all said and done, is going to be talked about as a top 15, top 20 pick. He might be the best left tackle in the SEC this year. If you're just going offensive lineman, I think Armand Mimbu at Missouri is going to take a massive jump. Probably wouldn't have him there just yet, though. So outside of the SEC, Mason Graham?

Oh, yes. On that list? 100%. No doubt. Caleb Downs, safety Ohio State on that list? Yes, 100%. In the discussion for pound-for-pound best player? Especially now that he's playing running back. Versatility, that's what I call it. There was a guy that called in to Paul's show yesterday and said that. Wow.

You've got to put Caleb Downs on that list. I mean, with the reps he's been taking at running back, and I was like, can we stop this, please? When I need quality football takes, that's the show I listen to. You did say that he needed to do more than one thing. I did. If you want to win awards, it's so dumb. Just goes to show you what's wrong with our award system. It's like, golly. If I'm going to have Mason Taylor as one of the best tight ends in America, I'm not going to expect you to put him at left tackle over Will Campbell to pass block.

You have Quinn, Sean Judkins, and Travion Henderson. Stop with the Caleb Downs are going to carry the football. Now, if you want to put him at guard, now we can start having a conversation because that's where Ohio State actually needs some help. Point guard or offensive guard? Because I don't know about the basketball program. Because that basketball program has plummeted in the last five or eight years. Some other guys that would make my list on the outside. The linebacker at Iowa is really good, Higgins. He's solid, very, very solid. Good football player.

Comparable to that of a Barrett Carter at Clemson, I don't think they're that different. Their numbers are probably going to be statistically padded just by the way things go. The Michigan tight end, Colston Loveland, would be probably in the mix. Last year, if you were to ask me the question, Brock Bauer is the best football player pound for pound in America. He could have played seven different positions. I don't care. It wouldn't have mattered. He would have been great.

would not have made a huge difference to me. Danny Stutzman at Oklahoma. Stutzman or Bowman? I would lean Stutzman. Bowman, very opportunistic last year. But yeah, I'd lean Stutzman. It'd be close. It's not like it's a huge gap between one or the other.

You know who we're forgetting? Travis Hunter. Yeah, well, Travis Hunter should have been towards the top of the discussion. He just got out of the SEC. Yeah, he would be in my top three if we're talking about it. I'd probably go top three, Mason Graham, Luther Bird, and Travis Hunter. If you're just talking pound for pound best football players in America. I don't know if I'm in that order, but those are the three. Cam Ward, I know he's a quarterback, but you want to just talk about playing ball and just watching him play ball at Miami? Yeah.

Now, it's a little different because we're talking about blocking, tackling, running, catching. Cam Ward plays football like it's basketball, and it's kind of...

It's kind of hard to wrap your head. Now, the guy who also did it was Johnny Manziel. Cam Ward is not quite to the same level of improvisation. Manziel ran past these, though. Cam Ward can rip, too, though. I mean, Manziel is a monster. I mean, there's no doubt that Manziel is a monster. But Cam Ward has some of that in his game. And there is no denying who the best player in college football was in 2011 and 12. All right. Here's one that we're forgetting that we probably shouldn't forget.

Oregon wide receiver, Evan Stewart. Good player. I think they're even going to let him wear sleeves. Oh, man. Game changer. The more you need. Imagine how much further the stats are going to go up.

When he's allowed to wear a sleeve. You have a one-nose William Dale, though? He wouldn't be aerodynamic. He's a pin somewhere playing, I guess. I don't know. I'll tell you another one. He's a really good football player. I'll tell you another one that everyone has forgotten about this offseason. I don't think it's easy to do because their team was underwhelming last year. But Zachariah Branch at SC. He's got to be healthy, too. No doubt. But you're talking about a guy that can float. He can do a lot. He can go. That guy is different. Put the ball in his hand. Quint Sean Judkins in this discussion? Good player. I think so. Yeah, good player.

I mean, hold on a second. Hold on a second. I don't have him. That almost felt disrespectful. No, he's a good player. I don't know if I'd have him as like the best football player in America. I understand. Half a pound the best football player in America. But you can't punish the position. You can't punish the guy because of the position. I'm not. But if he's going to enter into the conversation, he's got to do more of the backfield as a receiver. He's a pretty damn good pass protector. I don't care about that. I don't care about that.

It's a valuable piece, Greg. I'm not saying it's not. Do you have your true blue stats or whatever the hell it's called, how many targets he's had? I'd like to know how many times they actually threw him the ball because I don't think it was very many. It's not. But, I mean, I know that if he could catch it, they'd probably get some looks. You get that guy out in space? Yeah. There's nothing more uncomfortable than watching a running back catch that can't catch. It's unbelievable. It's like you are that athletic. You are that good with the ball in your hands and you can't catch? Yeah.

It's like watching an NBA player swing a golf club. He caught 22 for 149 last year. I don't feel like he's a liability. Catching the ball, I just don't feel like they threw it to him. Start throwing it to him. 15 for 132 the year before. Start throwing it to him. He's too busy toting that thing. Don't shoot the messenger. Two years ago, they were just giving it to him. There wasn't a lot of... I'll tell you a guy... He was the leading receiver amongst their running backs. Bentley had 11 catches.

Last year. And Matt Jones had one. Who? Exactly. Not Mike. Matt. And then the previous year, the leading receiver for running backs was also Jenkins with 15. And Zach Evans had 12. So they're just not throwing it to the backs very much. Well, feed the beast. I'm with you.

That would be what separates some of the other packs to me. Like a Devin Neal at Kansas. That dude is lightning. I mean, he's awesome.

Really, really good back. Ashton Jeanty from Boise State. Like, really, really good back. Capable with the ball in his hands. Capable as a pass catcher out of the backfield. Really good. I'll tell you one that nobody talks about. It's just a dynamic dude. Really, really good is Casey Concepcion.

from NC state. That guy can play. Uh, it was a true freshman last year. It was a slot guy. It was by far their most explosive weapon. Uh, didn't even know what he was doing for the first five or six games as a true freshman. But my goodness, like he was different, uh, once you got him going. So he'd be in the mix as well. Um, I do feel like normally, I don't know if this is like this for you, Cole, but normally this discussion would include more defenders. Um,

I feel like more and more have kind of moved to the offensive side, which I don't know if it's disconcerting, but it's just – and it was reflected in the draft last year. I mean, look how many guys on offense were drafted in the top 32 picks. I think it was 21 or 22 record picks.

It's definitely becoming that way in college, too. I mean, guys that have the option to play offense or defense are choosing offense, and their coaches are choosing offense for them in some cases. It's just wild how it's kind of changed. Yeah, we've talked about how it felt like for a long time every school had two, three guys that you were just terrified of on defense, and there's not that many of those anymore. It just doesn't feel like it's there. I did come across a list of the top 100 players in college football. What?

I will let you know the good and one really bad in which I immediately discredited everyone involved with the list. And I'll tell you why next right here on McElroy and Kubelik in the morning. The capital of the sports talk nation. This is Jocks 94.5 and jocksfm.com. Hurry hand. All right, welcome back in. McElroy and Kubelik in the morning. Talking pound for pound best college football player in America.

It kind of started with a tweet from Jacob Hester that said he'll take Will Campbell, LSU left tackle. And he made some great points saying that since he walked on campus, the expectations were high and he's pretty much locked it down. First game was against Jared Verse. T-Mac handled himself there and has been pretty good since. Has never been a liability, taking care of things that need to be taken care of. I just remember one game that he missed was that Tennessee game. Remember he was out dehydration the day before and they showed him get rolled. Now I'm not saying that...

He was the reason why they lost by 30, but it's a pretty good indicator of his presence being a calming thing for everybody else on the roster. Absolutely. Your CBD store can calm you down. Products that can sort of help you soothe your nerves throughout the course of the day if you have anxiety. Arthritis as well, something they can help out you or your pet with. Gut health, skin care, all at your CBD store, the largest brick-and-mortar CBD retailer in the world.

First company to have USDA-certified organic oil supplements. They have the stamp seal on those products. Weight loss, a trim by SunMed. In stock now at your CBD store as well. Check out one of their four locations. Highway 280 by Bailey Brothers, 150 by the Cajun Cleaver. Trust will just off 459. And now downtown in Five Points, your CBD store, where good health hits home. So in preparing for this topic, I did come across the –

uh collegefootballnetwork.com's list of 2024 top 100 college football players would you like me to start at the top or the bottom uh which ones were compelling to the bottom is where we will completely discredit it and not pay any attention to it and tell these people how psychotic they are we probably should or i can just tell you who they feel like they have at the top to continue our discussion of maybe who should be in that discussion i kind of like starting with the worst and well no starting with the best and

Allowing it to get worse. Starting with the best two guys that we haven't really talked about yet, but probably should be in the discussion. Number one, Ollie Gordon, running back Oklahoma State. Very good player. Number two, James Pierce, edge Tennessee. They would then go Mason Graham, Abdul Carter, Luther Burden, Carson Beck, Will Campbell, Will Johnson, quarterback Michigan, Kelvin Banks, tackle Texas, and then Travis Hunter at 10.

Tetior McMillan, wide receiver Arizona at 11, Greg. Another guy that does a lot of things really well. Yeah, really good player. I don't know if I would go as far as to have him. Tetior McMillan, I think he's a top two or three wide receiver. He's a monster on the perimeter. But he's really kind of just your X receiver. I mean, he's not like...

Not a lot of catch and run. No, yeah, it's not like the juice after the fact. I don't know. When I think football player, I think explosive, athletic, fluid. You know what I mean? And he's all those things, but he's really more of just a monster with the ball in the air. Okay, so the collegefootballnetwork.com's top 100 players of 2024. Number 100?

Burnett, punter, Alabama. Number two, Graham Nicholson, kicker, Alabama. Love that. Collegefootballnetwork.com. You are out. I will no longer read anything you have to say. RTR. You cannot tell me that a kicker and a punter are two of the top 100 players, players, keyword players, as in playing football, the game, in

Not real. Dude, Bama. It's not a real thing. Don't care. I don't care what school that was. It could have been Homewood High School. It's not a real thing. It's not. But Bama. They're not one of the top 100 players in the country. And when I say players, I mean individuals that play football. It's not real. So we're moving on from that. I don't care where. It had nothing to do with Bama. It was not a Bama thing. If you hate Bama, that's fine. Just admit it. I don't hate Bama. But I do hate people that think that...

There are only 99 players or 98 players better than a punter and a kicker in the country. Stop that right now. Well, we've got a problem in the sport if that's the case. 99 players, but this kick ain't one? James Burnham might not be in the top 100 on his own team. And there's only 85 scholarships. But if we're just talking football players, it's a different. I'm reading into all of this. I'm not saying Kalen DeBoer has 100 scholarship players. I mean, I just, yeah. Well, not yet.

Right. He just got there. Give him some time. Give him some time. He might get there. Gray-shirting, blue-shirting, we can get there. 800-239-9569 if you'd like to join this discussion. 205-834-9450. You can text into the show. Also be a part of it there. So, Ollie Gordon, a name we didn't mention. He's in that discussion, right? Yes. He's a great football player. Yeah.

He's tall, so it's a little challenging. You know what I mean? It's a little challenging. He's never going to be a factor in the punt return game. Quick twitch is never going to be his thing, but he's tall and has some...

some elements of his game that are really smooth for a guy that's tall. If you haven't watched him, the guy that he reminds me most of, and I think if anyone that has spent some time watching, he's just Najee Harris. He runs like Najee Harris. Not quite the receiver that Najee was, but has a similar jump cut and kind of runs upright a little bit like Najee does. So that's kind of who he is.

As far as pound-for-pound football players, though, like Ashton Jeanty at Boise State, he would be, because of his versatility in the past game, that's not considered screens. It's not slow screen left, slow screen right.

He would probably be at or near the top of my list among running backs in this discussion for pound-for-pound football players. I will say this, though, and I'm somewhat guilty of it. Like I said earlier, when I think pound-for-pound best football players, I need different things that you do extremely well. There are times, though, and there are circumstances when certain individuals do certain things so well that

I kind of don't care how many other things you do well. Like Derrick Henry would be a great example of that. I don't care how well Derrick Henry caught the football. Honestly, I don't really care what he did in pass protection because I know when he was going north and south, he was that much better than everybody else doing it. So there are times that I think we sort of get consumed with we've got to help on special teams and do this and catch and throw and run and do all these other things. There are certain guys that are just so good at the thing that they do, they're going to be in that list and they're going to be there. Right. Like you think about a Devin Hester in college. Right.

He was so good just wherever it was when the ball got in his hand. Okay, cool. We're good. We'll take you as one of the best pound-for-pound guys. I don't care what your cover skills were, how many other positions we try to play at. You're just going to be there. Sure. But somebody who probably deserves to be there. It's interesting. I just saw Jordan Reed, ESPN draft analyst. He tweeted out his number one ranked player on his 2025 NFL draft big board. It's a name that we've mentioned. We actually mentioned him in the first segment.

But this is where I think this conversation is interesting because, like I said, it can have multiple layers and it can mean different things. He has Michael Williams, edge defender at Georgia, as the number one player on his 2025 NFL draft big board at this moment. Now, you mentioned it earlier, Greg, you talk about ability, you talk about twitch with size and athleticism. I mean, that's going to be a guy that if you're talking about all those baseline things that are attractive to NFL scouts, he's going to have a lot of them.

I think he's good. The problem is we just haven't seen him at his... How many great games has he had? Two. I mean, and they were great now. Let's not get twisted. I think they were both in the playoffs a couple years ago. The Ohio State. Dominant in one of them. I mean...

Are you talking about the TCU game? No, I was thinking more of that Ohio State game. I don't remember which one was which, but all I know is he took over the game pretty good. One of them. But that was like one of just a couple of really good performances. Like, you've got to give me a little more. He had one sack against Ohio State, one sack against TCU. He does not have a two-sack game in his career.

Yeah, but you could still impact the game and not make sacks. I look at Jerry Verst last year. He didn't have a sack until week five. I don't care. He doesn't have a game in his career with more than one and a half tackles for loss in a game. I'm just trying to share how limited his greatness has been. But like you said, it has flashed at times where he has – it's all about impacting the game, and he's done that on a couple occasions in a great way. No question. No question.

Another guy that we haven't really discussed, we did in the break briefly, was Dylan Bell of Georgia. Like his versatility. Hey, we're short on running backs. Can you play running back? Yeah, I'll run it between the tackles for you, even though I'm a receiver. That's pretty cool. And then one more guy, too, that I think is probably worthy of this discussion because while his accuracy is inconsistent, there's no denying that, right?

Jalen Milrow, pound for pound, is a great football player. Now, you can play him at seven different positions. He'd probably be pretty dang good. He's really, really gifted. Now,

that people will kind of lose their that he won't be in the discussion at the top because of the inconsistencies throwing the football he's not winning the old quarterback challenge at the pro bowl back in the day or whatever it was no no he's not but like get in the ball and let it see what he does with it he's probably running 22 miles an hour i don't know i don't care how fast he's running catching him yeah yeah it's and he can run you over he'll put his shoulder down and he'll truck you

So I do think that when you're talking, like you said, just pound for pound overall football players, he's going to be a guy that has to be in that discussion. So it's a fun discussion. There's a lot of guys out there that I think deserve to be discussed and talked about. And I also feel like it's maybe not as clear as it's been in some other years. Other years, there would be two, three guys we would say, oh, no, this guy, this guy, this guy. Like not even like we were sitting here a year ago. How many people would have just said Caleb Williams?

I don't need to talk about anybody else. I don't need to have a discussion. That's it. He's the guy. Because, I don't know, maybe people forget because the year wasn't what a lot of people thought it was going to be. The hype train for Caleb Williams this time a year ago. It was off the charts.

So he was good at football. So he kind of brought back the whole maybe he should sit out conversation this time a year ago. I remember a couple of people saying that. Well, I believe he probably shouldn't suit up. Well, wait for me days. There'll be someone saying that again this year about God knows who Carson Beck. Who knows? It's like every year you're getting that. Why would you play football? Right. Get better. I don't understand why they're playing. They can just get paid here in eight months.

Because you have to play to get paid. There we go. That's usually why. Why does the first overall pick play in his rookie contract? The second deal is where you make your money. Just wait on it. Just wait for that thing. A player, right? Like the myth of Bo Jackson. Like, rate, and download the show from the Jock Cup or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, welcome back in. Michael Roy, AA Cube Lake in the morning. 7.49 a.m. Tuesday, July 9th, right here on Jocks 94.5. Pound for pound, best college football player in America has been a lot of the discussion, but we'll change it now and go top three, which...

oftentimes leads into no discussion because it's terrible sometimes every now and then it can actually be good it doesn't have to be sports sometimes is sometimes isn't damien what's on tap for our top three today well today july 9th one of the legendary actors of our lifetime was born that would be one tom hanks any guess on how old he is 72 no younger than that 64.

70. He's 68. 68 years old. So we are going our top three Tom Hanks films. And boy, when I tell you, he is. The resume is. It's elite. Just almost too many good ones. That's a good thing. That's a great problem to have. Off the top of my head, I need to look. Saving Private Ryan is going to be one for me. And I don't even think people remember that he was in it.

He was the main character. But I just don't think people, when they think Tom Hanks, they think big, they think...

Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump is one. What's the stranded movie with Wilson? Castaway. Castaway is going to be in my top three. I couldn't remember the name of it. I did enjoy the movie. I'm surprised you didn't like Splash. Well, there you go. That's one that people remember him for. Sleepless in Seattle. That's not going to make it. Probably not in the top three. It's only top three of the only so many spots you got. Okay, I get it. Yeah.

That brother is... That brother don't miss. Oh, he's missed. Oh, yeah. I'll just go ahead and tell you. I'm surprised Toy Story's on there yet for you. Cube? Cube kicks? It's hard for me to put that as... I don't think that could ever be somebody's greatest performance. Oh, God. You're just talking. Polar Express not going to be in there. It's not? No. Here we go. On the outside, look at you. That one missed. All right, so I'm going to go...

Cast Away is going to be there, as I stated. Yep. And then I think I'm going to go Forrest Gump to wrap up the top three. Not bad. Forrest Gump's an easy one. I love that movie. I just always have. Even before I moved here, I loved Forrest Gump. Yeah.

So that'd be one. Catch me if you can. It would be two. I forgot that was, um, and then number three, since you've already done saving private Ryan, I'm good with that. I'll do bridge of spies, which is not that old, probably 10 years old or so. Gosh, that was a great movie. Um,

Did you ever see it? I haven't seen it. Oh, dude, it's awesome. You've got to watch it. So basically they capture a Soviet spy, and the Soviets capture an American spy, and they've got to figure out how to trade him out. It's awesome. Steven Spielberg, Tom, I mean, it's legit. So I didn't miss. Yeah, that thing's a banger. I feel like I should watch Band of Brothers next.

What does that have to do with it? He apparently made an appearance in it. I'm looking at his IMBD. Sorry. Spoiler alert. A lot of people tell me it was incredible, and I feel like maybe that should have been up there. I'd be curious if they make Damien or Save Our Earth's List. I'm going to guess no. But a couple of very underrated movies on his repertoire as well. This will be good. John? John?

Number three is Turner and Hooch. That's a good one. That was a lock. Number two is The Green Mile. There we go. And number one is Toy Story. Number one? Yeah. See, you... I just... Woody! I can't put that up there. A best film. Not his performance. You said best film. Which one? First one. Hmm.

Is there a debate on the Toy Story rankings? I just thought you'd go Toy Story 3, the tearjerker. No, because just because it has one impactful moment doesn't mean it's a great movie. And I'd say it's not a great movie, but just that one moment where, oh, wow, you're actually going to kill everyone. Okay, no, you're not. True. Green Mile is a little long for me. If it were an hour shorter, we got action. Perfect. It's perfect.

Number three for me actually would be the Green Mile. Number two, because I want it to be number one, but I got to go with Philadelphia. Him and Denzel Washington. That was –

That was a great movie. It was a great performance. Yeah. Oh, my gosh. Like, I had to watch it for class, and I didn't, like, I just didn't know. One, I didn't know a young Denzel Washington or a younger Denzel Washington. The brother's just been amazing in everything that he's breathed on. You watched movies and went to people's houses and learned how to cook in college. Wow. Okay. That's what you did.

That's what you shared with us. Those are two of the more memorable classes. I'm wondering if that school survived. I didn't say that. Don't put that on me. That was John Saber who said that. And number one, I've got Sully. Sully's a good movie. It's amazing. Yeah, pretty good. I haven't seen the tape. Oh, man. It's pretty good. A couple like Greg was talking about. Money Pit. I don't think a lot of people have seen that. I'm not saying it's going to be in the top three, but that's a hilarious movie. I've never seen it. Hilarious. That thing you do would be...

one of the movies that I would consider to be very underrated, highly entertaining. It's easy. If you're in a stressed out point in your life, you just watch that thing you do, and it's pretty easy. Same with Bachelor Party. Bachelor Party is an easy watch. I also like League of Their Own. League of Their Own, he was great too. Great movie. Captain Phillips. I can't watch Captain Phillips. It stresses me out. It's not even mentioning Big either. The movie that put him on the map. Big is just not realistic. Yeah.

Why is it not realistic? Because the giant piano? They make those things, actually. No. It's hard for me to envision. You guys think it's hard to get to the moon. I think it's hard to go see. No, you're the one that said we'd be able to see the moon. We and this. I'm Uncle Phil. We? Hey, you can be mad. That's you, man. That's fine with me. I like that you think big is unrealistic, but you like Forrest Gump.

All those things could happen. Who doesn't just run out of the football stadium and right into a run across America? Let's be honest. From that school, yeah, probably. Wow. At least my school is still in existence. Let's not. We didn't watch movies at our school. We did real things. Nobody sleep with us in Seattle, huh? And Greg, I feel like Apollo 13 would have been perfect for you. No, no. I actually really liked Apollo 13. That was a great movie. It's not realistic. Okay. You guys don't go Castaway, though.

Castaway was just a little... Top five for me, but not top eight. I just have a hard time envisioning him as some hard-o that's going to survive on an island for three years. Talk about taking out of context. This is McElroy and Gubelik in the morning.
