The BYU Cougars improved to 2-0 on the season with their gritty 18-15 win over the SMU Mustangs Friday evening in Gerald J. Ford Stadium and while it was a slog, BYU football saw Jay Hill's defense put on a heroic performance that helped the Cougars secure their fifth victory all-time over SMU and the defensive prowess appears to be Kalani Sitake's program's strength.

Jake Hatch then took the BYU offense to task as starting quarterback Jake Retzlaff reverted back to what he was in 2023 compared to the poise he displayed in the season-opener against Southern Illinois a week ago and the issues on the offense go deeper than just him with LJ Martin on cruthes and the play-calling by offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick being questioned.
