Fairies, or fair folk, are an important part of Scottish folklore. Fair folk are said to be metaphorical mirrors, being either good or evil, reflecting human nature back to itself. All waterways, mountains and lochs in Scotland are said to be protected by a fairy. Celtic mythology is steeped in historical tales of fairies, dating back to prehistoric times.
