He looked lean and sleek and surprisingly put together.

Were it not for the shackles at his wrists and ankles, he might have been walking onto a yacht. I noticed, as he made coffee, that his knife rack was shaped like a human body, stuck through with blades at various points. There were only two possibilities. The money had been stolen,

or it had never existed. Subscribe at newyorker.com slash dark, and you'll get access to all of it, plus a free New Yorker tote bag. I must say, the very best tote bag around. That's newyorker.com slash dark. In February of last year, I got an email from a woman in Mississippi. She wrote that there was a man there named Curtis Flowers who'd been tried six times for the same crime. The evidence is iffy at best, she wrote,

The man didn't have a chance. Curtis Giovanni Flowers murdered those four people. There's no doubt in my mind. And I think he needs a fry in hell where he's going. If he was executed, would you go watch? You're damn right I'd go watch. I will stick the needle in him. I mean, it's hard to trust this investigation. It's hard to trust the people who ran it. And it's hard to trust the prosecution trying this case.

Hey, where are the facts? Where's the proof? Mississippi, Mississippi. You know, we all know what goes on in Mississippi. Once we get you in the courtroom, you're ours. If you're black, we got you. The last one was full of empty filing cabinets, and this one is full of records. Just be cautious when you go approaching some white people's houses to come out courteous. Just be careful.

Get out of the store. Don't make, don't, don't cause a scene. Okay, we're going to leave, but can I just, why are you shut up and get out of here? Can you get her out? Get her out. So are you confident that you have the right person that Curtis Flowers is guilty? That I will answer definitely. No question at all. There's nothing weak about this case.

Basically what we want to know this morning, the day that you came in and made this statement, did I lead you to say anything? No. Was your statement free and voluntary? They'll keep going on until they get inside your head to make you think that he really has something to do with it. They know exactly how to get in your head. Don't anybody want to see justice?

Whether they black, white, or other, I mean, it would be anybody. I want to see justice for anybody. Season two of In the Dark, coming May 1st. I'm Dan Taberski. In 2011, something strange began to happen at the high school in Leroy, New York. I was like at my locker and she came up to me and she was like stuttering super bad. I'm like, stop f***ing around. She's like...

I can't. A mystery illness, bizarre symptoms, and spreading fast. It's like doubling and tripling, and it's all these girls. With a diagnosis the state tried to keep on the down low. Everybody thought I was holding something back. Well, you were holding something back intentionally. Yeah, well, yeah.

You know, it's hysteria. It's all in your head. It's not physical. Oh my gosh, you're exaggerating. Is this the largest mass hysteria since The Witches of Salem? Or is it something else entirely? Something's wrong here. Something's not right. Leroy was the new dateline and everyone was trying to solve the murder. A new limited series from Wondery and Pineapple Street Studios. Hysterical.
