You know, making great software, it's like anything else. It starts with a great idea. Like the idea to order cake for a special event. The baker delivers a six-tiered chocolate masterpiece. But did I mention there are only a few guests? They're celiac and they hate chocolate. Or maybe we conceive of a summer retreat. But the contractor built us a treehouse.
Technically, we got what we asked for, but not what we wanted. So what was missing? Ideation. The baker and the contractor should have asked the right questions up front so they could surprise and delight, not surprise and disappoint. If they'd have taken the time, maybe our guests would have enjoyed the gluten-free cupcakes they really wanted, and we'd be sleeping in that log cabin we've been dreaming about.
