Matter 1.4 Announced with New Devices, Multi-Ecosystem Improvements, & More!

Welcome everybody to another exciting episode of home kit insider. You ve got me. Your host is always Andrew hera. Hope all you are doing great this week. Hope is a wonderful, the beautiful, you know, morning, midday, afternoon, evening. Whenever you are relaxing listening to the podcast on your drive to work, whatever IT is, it's going to be a great day.

I know IT well, we have a lot of you to talk about this week if you have have been following the smart home news stuff at all because as a good stuff that happened last week, you know what i'm talking about and we're going to come back to IT. So unfortunately, right. And so again, this week, we had a last minute cancellation because the schedules are are crazy, but I am very excited to tease our next guest on the podcast and we're going to get there in the latter half of this episode.

So starting off with a few update out of the apple camp. Um apple had a big week for things is right? There was updates coming out.

So we had the new version of tvs drug TV as eighteen point two. And now this is still in beta face. So it's a first beta eighteen point do, and there's still nothing really to see.

But of course, some codes fluting has gone on to reveal that the new update will include the wallpapers that apple has neglected to give us yet. This has been expected apples that these were coming by years, and then IT makes sense at eighteen point to going to be the vehicle to deliver them. You are not familiar with these.

Apple has several new wallpaper screen saver. Things coming out that are are a little bit different than what it's done now. Right now, it's really focused on those eros.

We got well, they're still called quote eros, but there is like underwater ones, space ones, city ones, landscape ones, a whole much really cool, awesome areas. Well, now we have ones coming for su by yeah more snowberry thee't. There is one foreign music, I believe that does something and there's a TV and movies, one that's all tightly into apple TV.

Plus apple didn't deliver this with TV as eighteen. We knew I wasn't being the first build. I will be in tvs eighteen point one, but no, so tbs eighteen point to IT is likely the beginning of december like that.

First we can december is where we should see this. Next up, we have vision s two point two, again in beta alongside eighteen point two. So the visions as to point to what's unique here is that if you are miring your mac to your vision pro, there are new ultra wide and wide screen options for your mac.

Can not specifically in the smart home, but I really put airplay into that camp. Airline staff can go there. Visionless technically can be like an airplay receiver for things, but this is just really, really cool.

And I also kind of one dimension IT. I did a whole video breaking IT down, but it's incredible. It's seriously amazing.

IT makes station pro so much more useful for productivity, in my opinion. I really, really like IT. So if you have not seen IT, you're curious at all. It's really awesome to check out. I get a video dening IT up on the youtube channel and i'll link IT in the shower notes for you as well. Moving through the updates macos sa coya fifteen point two once mark for the third time on the beta train, this thing has new screen options bore apple TV so as long as you're TV TV is updated in your mama's is updated to macroyd c fifteen point two you can now opt when you're mirrors to show your whole screen a single window or APP or extended display so this is going to have different privacy implications because you're in a board room or anything like that and you wanted mere something you may not want to make sure you know any hint on your screen.

Obviously, notifications already we're getting tailored when you're connecting to next to display, but now is going to hide the rest your screen for you as well so you can full on, extend your display, use IT as like that second option have different things on both near just an APP window just to space, anything like that or do your whole screen. So I like that this they're doing this to make a little bit more understandable in terms of what you're showing and mirrors. So there's nothing accidental, anything like that going on.

So is a really useful updates from apple on this point to saga when I can get into IT by eighteen point two for iphone and ipad IOS and ipad OS that includes more apple intelligence features like the image generation gene mogi image playground, more enhanced for writing tools, all of that. So just blockbuster releases coming out here, beginning of next month. So outside of apples updates, there is a new APP that I want, dimensions.

So this was sent in by, I believe, the apps to develop or ovie. And I think this was very cool. So it's called a screen canvas and is for the apple TV.

So I going to a bunch of different enterprise things for is on ipad. All that and there actually has been a really cool utilization for apple tvs. And we see him getting used in hotels are lunch in hospitals who are becoming more and more common.

But another little known news cases for signage, for digital signage. And there are apps that do this. You can have a whole m dm.

Solution on board of punch apple TV, and use them for intelligent science connected to tva hdm mind, I actually dumb this. I've implemented this in an actual business to run like a lobby TV who have rotation information and stuff on IT. And that works really well.

Well, this is a new way, using the screen canvas rapper TV APP, for basically anyone to do this that doesn't require any special software, nine bms of no, a design skills. It's just a super easy way to turn an apple TV connected display into a digital sign. You can promote, you know, slides for a business sales, anything.

If it's an office, you could do hour whatever IT is. You need display if you've just ever had a TV or a screen and projector that you like, mean, I ish, I turns into a sign for a minute for whatever IT is or for a longer period of time. You don't want to about the skills needed to do that.

This is the way to do IT. IT has a whole designer, and there we can pick backgrounds and text to do something really easily. Or you can point your images anyway. You want that you've designed elsewhere.

You jumped in a can band, actually did something super fancy pool min using this way well, but I was pretty pressed with that as far as they really easy get going up that anyone can use to turn their apple TV into digital signs. So check IT out screen canvas for apple TV last day, kind of summer, up from last week's episode that i'll be a nice transition here is that this was sent by saban, probably pronouncing correctly. But thank you for sending this over.

It's a list and it's a list on the csa website that gives you all of the matter connected accessories ies, right? And you can filter down with the different types of accessory. So for example, we were just talking about matter can get backing cleaners.

Which ones would be on that list? Which one are being certified? All of that, right? Well, this list gives you that gives you that whole break out.

And I was like looking through this year and just to give you an idea, like, okay, the switch, but rob robot vacuum k ten plus pro combs on there, the uv robot vacuum omes one tested didn't even know that was showing up on this. The s ten also from switched by, there is ones under here from robotic c ecospaces on here. Dream is on here.

There's a good chunk of including the ones we have talked about. The problem is, while this is useful, it's also not useful because they may be certified. But IT doesn't mean those updates are out and we have no idea when they will be out.

Like for robot rock in particular, robot rock has had this certificate ation since like April or something like whatever IT was, IT was very early and yet we still don't have IT update out on the robotic vacuum itself. why? I don't know what the hold is.

They literally were certified so long ago, and that update isn't out, so that what makes this very hard to people. So three twenty seven is when this was certified, the robo rock s 7 max vulture a the one that I have that I used。 I would love to be able to use matter with this.

And IT says IT is fully certified here, but that update is not available. Who knows if he will be? I don't know that that's the problem with us. So it's really cool. I'm going to put the link to you if he has want to look through all of the other ones that are listed here.

The only one they don't know is a chemical media mi dea and they have A J fist teen and not going to google alive on the air right now. But that's this be the only one on this list that i'm not familiar with, the rest's dreamy robo rock uf e switch pot. And then that that media group is the only other one that I don't know.

So we've talked about a lot of these. So i'm very curious that when this is actually going to turning to something we can all use. So we'll see.

But again, thank you for sending over that list on matter devices because that's what we talking about for basically the restless episode. So let's dive in because matter one point four has been announced and this is big update. They are sticking with that biannual cain.

So two updates coming out a year. We had one point three coming out in the spring. Now we have one point four, which I believe is technically a little later than last year because one point two came out, I want to say later her.

So where were a week or so behind where we were last year? But I very much apple laud them for keeping these updates coming, and i'm not going to go off the rails complaining the fact that very few companies are supporting them. But let's talk about what is new in matter.

One point for cause, IT is massive. So first up, new device category for home routers and access points. Huge right there, reiter's access point.

So this is going to be anything you use of mesh routers. All of those cannot be matter certified. Any means a couple different things. So first, that means they are going to play nice with any of your matter accessories. So really easy to onboard them, really easy to add them to your house.

You shouldn't have a weird things going on a two point four verses by have their hurts networks anything like that, they should just be able to play nice together is super easy. People get them onto your home network also IT means that they're going to have whatever. Implementations on the matter side of things like when we look at home kit routers, there is additional security things that you can turn on and off.

So I anticipated see something like that for matter enabled routers. They do say they're going to continue to to work on this, but I don't know what else going to be adding to the new router stuff there, but so that'll be there. They also say, that matter, routers will also have the red capabilities built in.

So I think that's going to be requirement from what I understand. So if that's the case, they should actually thread border wouters and you put what needs in your home is going to to spend that through our in newark, that exactly what we want. You know you're looking for a matter rather, they get something you're going to want in your home, but just cover wifi thread, make IT very easy.

So everything's going to work if you don't have a home on you about, you don't have an apple TV don't get to worry about. You can just boom, connect this go. You've get your barter rather. So all good stuff there.

Four routers, they again, they say the ita A P so homeless nexus points road maple continue to add and hands and to improve smart home m infrastructure, including sport of thread one point four, which is coming the thread one point four update coinciding unrelated just happens to, okay, multi admin, they're calling this enhanced admin. Multi adam has been around for a while. And that is what allows you to use one matter accessory across multiple home ecosystems.

So for me, I like A A google home hub, displayed next home, google max display, maxi display, whatever. I don't know what IT is, but we have that. And that's google side of things.

I also have a samsung, a smart hub thing going on. So a smart things have. And then we got apple home kit, apple home stuff. So three different one.

So if I have something like that, analyze lights, rope, which is in my son's room, I can go head and turn them on, connect IT to apple home first. I can put into the peering mode and then go head and connected to the other ecosystems. That's how IT has worked now, but it's had some hick ups.

IT has not always worked that great. There has been a lot of frustration hear from users as well as from developers on the actual implementation of these things. IT is not an easy what they're going to do now is with enhanced multi admin.

It's going to require a single user consent, which means when you up, you can automatically add IT to three different ecosystems all the same time. Very easy to do to add everything at once. Now i'm not sure how that's going to work for me, a guy point of view like what the user and her place is going to look like.

You're adding into apple home. Maybe IT will be a public. Would you also want to add to your Spark things home in this home at the same time?

I don't know because that, that isn't one hundred percent clear yet, but they do say they will be publishing additional documents and and blogs on on how that will all work. So i'm interested to see how that's going to improve. But this is going to one of the biggest sticking points, for matter accessories is doing that.

So i'm a very curious how that's going to play out. But its great news then there's a big push on energy management. We have heard this.

We have heard this from the csa in the past, and now we're starting to see some of those first things here. So we already got, and I think one point, three things like EV charges. Now we're having a bunch more.

So this is all under the osprey of energy management stuff, solar power. So existing power in electric energy supporting matter has been tended to solar power devices, including inverters, individual and panel, or rise in hybrid d solar battery systems. So a lot of stuff there for solar from capturing IT as well, storing that energy moves over the batteries.

So these are battery walls, storage junes, a battery energy storage systems. Best those are in there are anything is capable of discharging energy back to the grid that is possible, creating virtual power plants, and that's in here. They also say they will include support that they'll support load balancing with any controller country serving as the management system is getting complicated, folks, but i'm pretty excited to see this is what i'm looking for, solar battery backup and managing all that stuff that gets to be powerful.

Heat pumps. These are very popular these days. I continuously hear about them. So heat pumps are being added with mat one point form, water heating, water heating. And supporter here, i'm very excited by this.

I with a regular we have a regular water heater and now and you never know how much water you have left, how long you have left. Anything like that also be able to like control IT and adjust your set temperature. Right now, it's a very manual process if we probably do something like that from the apple home APP.

So here's how the csa described water heating, electric water heaters. They can be set to a preset temperature or percentage. Users can monitor how water levels there is, a boost commands that can be added, which will enable rapid heating from multiple energy sources for situations where how water is needed quickly.

Temporary override ed for heating schedules. cool. yeah. And then scheduling on an off. So maybe you don't have to have a heating all the time.

You can heat during off hours based on grade and power idiz, ation, all that kind of stuff. So really meet things there for water heating and then enhancements to E V charges. So now they are adding support for scheduling charge.

So you can actually do this during certain times, building on from what they had before. So scheduling everything is the big thing for EV charges from what we had before. Thermostats, new options here. So clusters add support for scheduling in preset modes, vacation, home, away. All that stuff will now be supported through matter.

So if we have a thermostat like ecb right now, IT has those things and then you don't really use them so much in the home map, there's no real way to set those mode. Now you can they can also be triggered through things like motion detection in in with other devices in automation based on calender events. So pretty exiting out there for thermo stats that definitely a boost lasting a matter one point four is device energy management and mode, basically what this means.

So devices that are allow, like energy consuming devices. So whatever you have like a power out at anything like that, uh, you're able to adjust start times based on energy usage forecasts in power management that needs. So if you're really trying to nail down based on energy usage on solar cells, anything like that you can control when these things are turning on and off.

So if you have things like a smart switch that can build into this, you can kind of control thers think so. I think all that's very good. Other random things in matter, one for there are two new device types.

These are for in wall home devices that control power. So apparently before one point for these were all models, just as lights. But if you heading that would control like an in ceiling fan, or maybe you had one that controlled like a rotating fan for this, like a bathroom fan, anything like that, they will all be muddled as light.

So there are two different device types that gives you a more flexibility and controlling and powering these. There is new enhancements in for occupancy setting. So they're adding radar vision in ambient sensing technologies.

Also, i'm very excited for this one guys. Customizable sensitivity. The apple home doesn't have this.

If you have a device as motion sensing and you want to control sensitivity, you often how to get kicked over to the manufacturer APP. You can do IT there, but you can do IT through the native APP. So now you can, with matter one point for the bad power devices.

This is a big one as well. So anything that is matter that is a switch as Better, Better life. now. So they call them inner, mentally connected devices in a long idle time protocol.

So between these two different changes, we're going to see switches, buttons, censors, all with much Better battery life going forward. I really excited for things like the nani remote. I knew that was something that they were working on, was how I was going to work with matter.

And I feel like this is going to be big for devices like that. So here we are that that matter. One point four hung a new device, sap's routers, a bunch of energy management staff, improvements for erma dats.

There's solar. There is a Better battery. Multi admin is now much Better than there was a lots of things.

The real thing is that we don't have answers to is when we're gonna see any of this, right? That's the big question because we have to wait or the people like apple, amazon, samsung, oodle to all add this to their devices. I don't think we're going to see much right now.

I we're looking probably, in my opinion, a year so away from these to start to be used because because it's kind like the gate start now that now that has announced now companies can officially start building IT in the ones that are part no member organza theyve had some time they to play around with IT. They're are going to still be months away from any device being announced to, let alone being available in that doesn't count. The platforms themselves are being already, we're still, I believe, waiting on apple to support matter one point two, officially one way or the other.

So who knows how long before matter one point or is adopted? Probably gonna a bit. But I think this is all great stuff to see four matter and very excited for this to be released.
