Chapters

Modern English is technically a Germanic language, but its history is intertwined with Celtic, Latin, and significantly, French influences. Following the Norman invasion of 1066, Norman French became the language of the English elite, influencing legal, governmental, and cultural vocabulary.
  • The Normans, descendants of Vikings who settled in France, introduced Norman French to England.
  • Norman French, a blend of Old French and Germanic vocabulary, became the language of the English court and elite for 300 years.
  • The influence of French is evident in English words related to law, government, military, church, and culture.

The English language is….different.

Unlike other languages, English has borrowed and used words from a wide variety of other languages.

However, no other language has had quite the influence that French has had.

In fact, French was the language spoken by the kings and queens of England for centuries, and the rules of England couldn’t speak any English.

Learn more about the French influence on the English language and what English would look like without it on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.
