The decentralized social media platform BlueSky has teased a paid subscription named BlueSky+ in recent mockups posted on GitHub. Exclusive BlueSky+ features according to the mockup include a profile badge, custom app icons, higher video upload limits, and higher quality video resolution.

The mockup also shows pricing of $8 per month or $72 per year for BlueSky+, though the company warns that features and pricing could change before launch. In response to users pontificating on BlueSky+, BlueSky software engineer Dan Abramov said in a post that the list of features shown in the UI mockup doesn't necessarily match what will be released.

The United States Department of Commerce has finalized more than $6.1 billion in U.S. Chip Act subsidies for Micron Technology to fund new factory projects in New York and Idaho, expected to create more than 20,000 jobs by the end of the decade. The Commerce Department and Micron have also agreed to preliminary terms for an additional investment of $275 million to expand the chipmaker's facility in Manassas, Virginia, which primarily manufactures chips sold in the automotive, networking, and industrial markets.

Ten months after first being teased, OpenAI has launched Soar Turbo, a new version of its text-to-video generation model that can generate videos up to 20 seconds long at resolutions reaching 1080p from a text or image prompt. Soar's ability to generate videos of people is being limited initially, while OpenAI refines its deepfake prevention systems. The platform also blocks content involving CSAM and sexual deepfakes.

Toro Toro is available to chat GPT plus and pro subscribers through a dedicated website, though some subscribers trying to use the tool are presented with a message that signups are temporarily unavailable thanks to heavy traffic.

Amazon Autos is here and you can now buy a brand new Hyundai via the online retailer. Amazon Autos was initially introduced in 2023 with an anticipated launch in 2024, and with just three weeks remaining in the year, Amazon made its deadline. Hyundai is the only manufacturer working with Amazon Autos currently, though Amazon says it will roll out services with additional dealerships and manufacturers in 2025.

Epic Games has begun to refund hundreds of thousands of Fortnite players after the FTC found that the company was tricking gamers into unknowingly spending money on in-game purchases. The FTC has started to send $72 million in refunds of an agreed-upon $245 million to Fortnite players who fell victim to its unlawful billing practices, according to the FTC. The FTC says the additional funds will be distributed at a different date.

Verizon has officially shut down its texting app Verizon Message Plus on Android in favor of Google Messages and has blocked messages in the app. Verizon has been moving towards the shutdown of Message Plus for several months, even extending the end of service by one month. SMS and MMS messages stored on Android devices can still be accessed via a replacement messaging application such as Google Messages. Users trying to access Message Plus are presented with a pop-up asking users to switch to Google Messages and that

all your messaging history will transfer. A switch now button at the bottom of the screen opens Google Messages if it is installed, which prompts users to switch their default SMS app.

A study detailing 747,604 women who underwent mammography screening over a 12-month period indicates that women who paid for AI-enhanced scans were 21% more likely to have cancer detected. Deep Health, an AI firm owned by radiology giant RadNet, presented its findings at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.

Overall cancer detection rates were 43% higher for those enrolled in the AI detection program compared to those who weren't. 22% of the overall cancer detection increase was due to the fact that higher risk patients were more likely to enroll in the program to begin with, implying selection bias. But its analysis concluded that the remaining 21% was due to the use of AI in driving recall rates for additional imaging.

And finally, the language learning app Duolingo has partnered with Netflix to help fans of Squid Game learn Korean ahead of the season two premiere on December 26th. The collaboration brings over 40 keywords and phrases from the show to Duolingo's app, including lessons teaching viewers certain sentences such as trust no one, let's play a game, and you've been eliminated. These phrases are integrated into the regular Korean lessons aiming to enhance the learning experience with references from the show.
