For two years from 1936 to 1938, over 1,500 Canadians would travel to Spain, often on their own, to fight against Fascists in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Eventually forming into the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion, over 600 never came home. To date, they are barely honoured in Canada.
