From December 1961 through early March 1962, I participated in the 16th Chilean Expedition to the Antarctic. In recognition of my work, the US Board of Geographic Names in October, 1964, named the geographical feature Cohen Islands, located at 63° 18' S. latitude, 57° 53' W. longitude in the Cape Legoupil area, Antarctica, in my honor. I think the 4 months I spent “on the ice” were perhaps the most exciting—and challenging—of my life. They involved episodes of high adventure, many of which I captured in my book Cold Blood: The Antarctic Murders Trilogy. The instant volume, The Antarctic Chronicles, is intended as a distillation of the trilogy’s more exciting stories, comprising tales of mystery, mayhem, and murder in South America and the Antarctic. Like the making of great cognac, wherein wine is double distilled in an intense process unique to this variety of brandy, I have selected for publication here those stories I think will give you, the reader, the best understanding of what scientists and explorers face when attempting to work on the Frozen Continent.
