Dr. Catharine Arnston's journey into algae wellness began when her younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her sister's oncologist recommended an alkaline diet, which led Dr. Arnston to research plant-based nutrition and eventually discover the potent health benefits of algae, particularly spirulina and chlorella.
An alkaline diet is important for cancer patients because cancer cells cannot exist in a slightly alkaline environment. The alkaline diet helps build the immune system and move the body into a higher alkalinity, which can be beneficial during chemotherapy.
Algae, specifically spirulina and chlorella, are considered the most nutrient-dense food in the world because they contain a high concentration of proteins, vitamins, minerals, and chlorophyll. NASA has stated that one gram of algae has the same nutrition as 1,000 grams of fruits and vegetables. Additionally, algae is endorsed by the United Nations as a solution to world hunger due to its protein content, which is three times that of steak.
Spirulina is considered an energizing algae because it generates energy at the cellular level by producing ATP (adenosine triphosphate) through the electron transport chain. It is also rich in B vitamins, iron, and essential fatty acids, which contribute to improved brain function and sustained energy without the crash associated with stimulants like sugar or coffee.
Chlorella is called a wellness detoxing algae because it has a hard cellulose fiber wall that binds to toxins such as lead, mercury, radiation, and pesticides, and helps remove them from the body. It also contains high levels of chlorophyll, which kills bacteria and heals cell walls, and promotes healthy digestion and detoxification.
Dr. Arnston recommends algae for people over 40 because the body's production of key antioxidants lik dismutase (SOD) decreases signifie superoxidecantly after the age of 30, leading to mitochondrial damage and chronic diseases. Algae, particularly spirulina, provides a high concentration of SOD, which helps protect and heal mitochondria, preventing the decline often associated with aging.
Phycocyanin, a blue pigment found only in spirulina, is important for health because it has cancer-killing properties. It stops the growth of blood vessels to tumors (anti-angiogenesis) and can trigger apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells by ejecting the cytochrome C molecule. It also improves the electron transport chain, enhancing cellular energy production.
Chlorophyll in chlorella benefits the body by healing cell walls, which are made of lipids, and by killing bacteria naturally. It also helps build red blood cells and can be used for detoxification, particularly for removing heavy metals and other toxins. Chlorophyll is fat-based and can be absorbed directly into cell walls.
Spirulina is suitable for a ketogenic or carnivore diet because it is zero carbs and rich in protein and essential fatty acids. It provides a low-calorie, high-nutrient option that can help fill nutritional gaps without interfering with ketosis or the avoidance of plant-based foods that may contain lectins and oxalates.
It is important to avoid high-heat processed algae products because high heat deactivates key components like phycocyanin and superoxide dismutase (SOD), which are crucial for their health benefits. These components are sensitive to heat and need to be air-dried to retain their effectiveness in protecting and healing mitochondria.
Catharine Arnston, PhD and algae expert, has a moving story about how she fell in love with the wellness properties of algae. This episode of Ancient Health is a crash course in algae; does this ancient natural substance, the first life-form on earth, have cancer-killing abilities? Is it a cure-all for age-related illnesses? Turns out there are numerous scientific studies on the potent health potential in spirulina and chlorella and Dr. Arnston is on a mission to teach North America all about algae wellness.
