When are getting escape for most of the time?

So um a lot of time I will use IT to defocus uh a text field or something, or cancel a menu or cancelled a dialogue box. I do not use IT all the time or all use IT for auto complete in in text areas or in x code like it's I use IT all the time.

The main thing I use IT for what i'm not like an IMAX, which i'm really in. But anyway, the main thing I use for believe there not is cancelling drags. I don't know you to do this, but i'm very often dragon things around in the find saying all i'm thinking Better of IT and like, no and I just want that drag to be over and I love escape for that.

I do wonderful people who don't know how to do that. What do they do? And they have essentially a handful files. And then I remember where they started, right? The finer, so weird about that.

I didn't know I could do this. This is amazing. Yeah, I just want really, yeah, what I do. I just try to carefully put IT back.

That's that's escape escape that's why .

you your esp people is that escape you don't have that carefully putting your back used to be so much Better and now find when I even when I if I tried to carefully put the back, it's like I don't trust IT. It's like, is gonna move files up on that life like I was a list view window? Try putting files back in the list view window. We have a bunch of folders turned down escape. Escape says bail out of this drag Operation works across the whole Operating system.

And pretty sure, man, this is like changing. So this even like when you, when you told me, like a year ago to like because in order to get to my downloads folder, I used to like click the stupid icon that brings up the stack and then like the and you told me, just hold on command option the and that brings .

up good you can figure .

IT to that on plane click imagine that .

i've been waiting like seventeen years for appelles you you'll be great if you could make that an option or a pea setting your up but nope and so like as engrained in my hands i'm command option clicking on folders and .

doc ever yeah thank god for that.

You still can't dock a folder earliest by the I found that so many times they just keep closing IT as like we don't care, make an allies to fold dragon into the dog, try to dragged something into that Alice to the followers, the thing drag, go into the folder that things and alleys, no, but just bounces back because it's like I have no idea what to do here. IT does not make any sense to me.

Do you dragged the file onto a folder icon? I can't figure that out. Just put the file in the folder apple, or don't let me put allies as to folders in the dock. Those are you two choices. Either one is fine current behavior or imaging and that .

you really feel I filed I filed that .

they close that I should file every five years years I should refile that bug, not that anyone is working the dog.

And that's A A reasonable interval to basically bother again about something .

to watch your feedbacks just descend into the black hole.

We have one final reminder about ATP march. John, can you tell us what should we be buying right now for buying everything?

This is the last time we will be telling you about the atp house storage. I know that seems right because this is only the medal november as well recording this. But I like I were trying to try to push the sale back so you have a chance of getting these things in time for the holidays.

Um the sale ends on sunday, november seventeen s this is your last chance if you've been putting IT off saying maybe i'll get something whatever you gotto do IT now by the time you hear this episode IT may be within the day, are two of the thing closing? Um so what do we have this year? I we say we have our gift memberships.

And by the way, gift memberships are available all year around that. We put them on holiday sale because is the holiday season. You might want to give someone to give membership. You might want someone to get you give membership.

You can do that at any time, like in on the store page, if you're log, then you will see a link um to to give you give you A T P gift membership or you can just tell people to go to atp that F M flash gift really easy. They can do that at any time. That's the one thing that lives past the end of the sales to give memberships.

You should still, you know, get them now by and happy the link now if you can. But anyway, the actual march. So we have our m four stuff, as we have discussed and past several episodes, the m four series of chips that have been released for max are really good.

Um lots people writing in to say hi, I don't have them for mac. I have like an m two mac and I get an m two shirt. It's like just like going going for a job interview or being in a job dress for the job you want.

You now dress for the chip that you want in your mac because who knows when the m four chips will be salt again. So even though you might have an m one or m two or maybe intel CPU like some people, you should still get the m for a shirt. Because by the time you actually get an m four, maybe we will be some m six shirts, right? So if you want a shirt to match your thing, you should get IT.

I can say these this is a great line of chips as we will discuss a further length and follow up. Believe or not, like the third, we can know how great the m four things are uh, and the shirts, they're just ten four shirts. But if you want to represent and show that you're representing one of the really good m chips, not just because it's the biggest number that's available, but this is a really good one.

So m for m four pro, m for max t shirts, long sleep sweat shirts. Your name IT. We've got IT uh in black and also in a whole bunch of colors with a monogram for a logo on them.

And of course the battery T P uh pull over hoodies uh in various colors as well. We got the T P pixel uh product in a variety of different styles that's proven to be very popular. A long A T shirt, shirt to shirt all that stuff.

And we have our plane old T P logo stuff uh with coloured shirts and also the back tus with the rainbow logo on IT. We have a zip tty, which is very popular. My family loves a zipod. When they destroy and or lose them, they make me buy another one that how much they like them.

At one of the few pieces of brand emerged that my children are willing to wear, because the branding is discreet, is just a tiny, a little brother logo, and otherwise it's just a really nice, comfortable, high quality hoodle. And that's what they love. We've got the polar available speaking of dressing for the job you want and maybe dressing for the season you want because it's short sleep, uh, we've got whole bunch of mugs left.

Uh, so if you want a cob alter atp mug, uh, you know, maybe get two. Because people drop them, break them and and they wanted replacement and we don't sell them anymore in that color or style and their sad so get back ups. And we have got the atp had.

So yeah, this is your last chance you're not going to hear about the sale anymore because by the time we record the next episode, the sale will be over and will be too late. So get your stuff while you can. Atp that F M slash store.

Maybe I should mention that that's where you go. Atp that M M slash store and that this is an actual pocket that I would have to read the third time, but it's not. So I won't don't .

forget to go to a the FM slash store that's eighty FM slash store one more time. This is just an exclusive offer for our listeners have flash store.

We need to mention that you remember, if you are a member, you get a fifteen percent off discount code that'll be on your member page. If you already logged in a tap that I think when you go to the store page, IT will fill in an automated get member page. We've make a little copy button. You don't have to try to select text and web road, which is also ridiculous. That's why these copy buttons are all over that time because I hate trying to select text on a web page and like the selection all over the place and you get like a spaces at beginning and and stuff so we will give you a copy button uh and if you want to become member, just kind of the discount, it's totally worthwhile to do. So if you can save more than the one month of membership costs.

So you and I will just pipe in very quickly and do my annual like this by annual reminder, my common reminder that there is always, always like fifty people that say, H, I forgot to do my order but there is also a handful people that legitimately say, oh no, oh no, i'm that person. It's me. I'm the problem.

It's me. There's nothing we can do once to sale, closest to sale clothes. So don't be that person.

Don't be the one that has to come. Hatton, hand put some boot style, looking up at me with your big gigantic sing. Oh, the casey, i've forgot this time. Don't be that person is to be out of him slessor.

I recently learned that was from a pop song, but I have already forgotten which .

artist and song IT was.

what's from the pops and the problem with me, ah, ah well, it's it's active problem.

No hurt IT god.

what's move on? I might have gone to their .

concert depending on what I do.

You would remember?

IT, what are you would do?

you? What would remember? IT, yes. What is this? what? Yes, yes, definitely do that.

So the other thing to slip your mind.

no, I did see Billy elish though.

How was that honestly? excEllent.

Like, I don't really good.

I am assuming that was not at your request.

So correct you you bring up people to fish concerts and eventually you got got to go to payback time.

Well.

I am not surprised. That was a very good show.

modestly. IT was amazing. I would like, I total, I totally get why he is so popular like there is very good reason. It's very IT was very good.

Let's move for everyone writes a email and let's start with Jason sims who writes approaching wasn't deed developed from scratch by apple? I guess one of us so john, I suppose.

has said said that IT was a child. Remember apples, uh various pro apps, uh, many which were purchased from the outside like logic and shake and stuff. And I said APP er chi could not remember that was a purchase or developed in house. And we got a clarification developed in house they I appreciated and then cancelled in house.

Um with regard to the map pro, eric crook reminded us to point out that the plane m four macapp o now supports two external displays. Add up to six k or sixty hurts over or one sixty sixty hurts over the boat in one four k hundred and forty four hurt over HDMI the m three macro pro by comparison the plane m three macro pro not the m three pro, not the m three max with the plane one supported only what external display with up to six k resolution at sixty hearts and requires you to close the lid to use a second display with up to five k resolution at sixty hearts.

We can remember we mention this on the thing, on the things launch or maybe we just know IT folded into our past discussions the multiple display controllers on the m four. But just to reiterate, one of the big limitations that people didn't like about the plane three macbook pro was it's not very good external display support. You just get one external display.

And then halfway through the life of that product, I said, here's a software fix that you have two external splaying, but you got a close the lid, because we take away the internal one, we give you the external one. All these limitations are gone. With the m four, you get legit to external displays, plus also still the one on in the laptop, which is pretty much uh, what I think should be table stakes for a bottom of the line back pro. And notice yeah honestly.

that you know that baseline macbook pro like that just has the m four and the m for projects. That is now a pretty good option for a lot of people like I think that compete well with the macbook air because IT gives you the you the proscribe, the pro speakers, the port on the right side, the S D card slot on the right, like IT actually gives you a lot over the map c air um for not a ton more money um you do kind of pay for IT in weight and thickness um but that's a really good yeah that's a really good option for a lot of people now and and so i'm actually i'm happy to see that product no longer be this weird astoria that like you tried to give in people not to buy. That's a product now that I could actually see myself buying if the equivalent in the future and .

IT starts to sixteen years of RAM. And I don't know, we emphasize that when we first talked to about, but you just mentioned in in passing, uh, these things in the past have had two ports only on one side, but now is three ports of one of the ports on the other side. You might think, well, who cares? As you know, it's the bottom of the.

Bottom of line one, how many ports really need to is fine. It's so convenient to have ports both sides, because you never know what kind of desk set up you are missing out what which side is convenient to get the power cable from, right? If you have A U, S, B, C power thing, you're not using the mag safe thing.

Is mag safe as little as on one side? Yeah, there's there's no there's nothing that you need to excuse on the baseline one anymore. It's got a great processor.

It's got more ports than I used to. It's got a reasonable display support. IT is really a Better, more expensive macbook are because when the end for macbook are comes out, we'll see how that model shakes up. But for now um is a really press machine.

Yes, onstar, it's great option for a lot of people.

Uh, what's regard to the map? Many we have quite a bit of follow up. And the bomb shell that dropped, I think was sort of mentioned during queen tear down, which I think happening the right before, right after we recorded.

But then IT has become even more of a bombshell. H the new mac mini has quite, quite modular storage. So as IT turns out, there are different like setups and boards.

We'll talk about that a minute, but all the different maines have their sts on removable boards, which is not super dumper. In fact, I would argue IT isn't user replaced unless you are really going spoon. But IT makes IT a lot more replaceable than I ever had been before. So john.

tell more about this. Yeah so the module story, anyone who familiar with the inside of a recent uh apple silk will recognize the quality of module or storage at the same type of storage module is in the mac studio and also very so much of the one is used in the mac pro, including even the twenty thousand nine mac pro, not even the apple of one.

嗯, IT is a car that goes into a slot that has the you know vessey nand storage on IT and that make you think great story is upgraded on these things. And we speaking the kind of is, uh, we'll put some links in the shown note to uh someone demonstrating what IT takes to upgrade the storage on a make many uh dos stood one which I think that name is not quite appropriate, but it's mine. IT is awesome and also that the same youtube r has done upgrades in the past uh, with max studio S S D.

Uh, the short version is, get out your soldering gun the way you you can't buy those little modules. There are not standard models, is not like I M got to module or N V M E T is not standard. All in apple thing, you can buy those apple of right, everything you can find to use the one like an ebay or something and stick IT in.

But then you in that case, thinly IT doesn't work less. The nand is actually blank. So what does does is gets what either takes the one that came with IT and d sorters the nand chips from IT and then buys blank none you know no date and nothing on the nandi PS and resorters them on top of the board.

Or if you look at the max studio S S T upgrade video from um a year two ago, put the time stamp king there someone made a custom printed circuit board by looking at apples and saying i'm going to make my own empty printed circuit board like that so you couldn't theory find that president france who made that custom circuit board bite from them find those blank mans the dusty found to buy somewhere by those some of the two of them together and while oh, you have an empty storage module that will work in uh, mac studio, maybe a mac pro and a certain mac mines which will get to in a second, right? So IT seems to me i'd like in no point in this processes anybody hacking any security key or fooling some D R M encysted or jail breaking anything right is just a question of how hard is IT to get the part. So it's like if someone wanted to sell third party S S D upgrades for the mac mini or the maxi studio, I don't see why they couldn't do what the person in this video did, which is find that guy in france and like buy his printed circuit or design and mass produce IT.

Find where that guy bought those blank nand modules for because they're not like special apple nand modules, or if they are, he found a place to buy them and then combine them, put them in over retail box and say, hey, guess what would you like upgrade mac many to a bigger reactive will sell you for half the Price that apple sell. IT, i'm not quite sure where the market has been opened up, maybe because of people don't there's not not people of these devices to make IT worthwhile to do what I just described. But technically speaking, you'll see two youtube videos where is literally possible to upgrade the storage on your mac using those little card things, which is good, I guess.

But like I said, since twenty nineteen with the mac pro, the little module things have been upgrade. The ball just hasn't been a thriving luck, legitimate, thriving Normal third party market for a creative storage. You really have to be kind of like to do IT yourself fur, or someone who wants to use a soaring iron, or someone who wants to cruse ebay for use parts and deal with all those things.

It's all how to wear cabyles ts and stuff. So it's not ideal. But apple, look, if you're not going to do IT to the board eh, you should sell them separately yourself at your own ridal Prices because at least I gives people an option of upgrading.

You know, if you could buy an upgrade from apple at ridiculous Prices, at least you feel comfortable that I know this is going to work and be IT would be great if you just let third parties build these things and sell them. Remember, one third parties you spell to sell parts that you can participle max to make them Better. Every casey, when you could buy third party RAM and stick at in you're magnet, there were no problems whatsoever.

Did IT make a Better though? All for years for people who are you are mac uses for years and years for a good good sort of middle portion of like the the recent mac era. Um IT was standard practice to tell people you are technical OK by this mac, but by with the minimum everything, the minimum RAM and the minimum.

And then when you get IT by a third party gram upgrade and a third party storage upgrade and your total costs, we will still be less than if you had bought those up. Great from apple. This whole expensive of great thing is not new for apple.

Oh yeah, that was how I thought my first few max because I would never able to afford the apple upgrade. Prices like this is one of the things we very much lost going to the modern everything started on the board kind of era um that like used to be able to just buy the base model and go on new ager amazon and buy some components .

and stick IT was fine yeah and entirely apple being super evil. The board, like lots of things, used to be replaced. Cl phone batteries all used to be easily replaceable.

There are not really any more. Laptop batteries all used to be easily replaced, not more. It's not just apples. The industry, there's reasons for this is more reliable. Smaller is more power efficient when apple does make something like A A test stop computer where they have enough room to make a removable storage and they choose to do so, like the mac studio, like the mac pro and now also like the mac many.

If you're going to make module storage, apple like give consumers the benefit of module storage, you can even if it's only apple selling the upgrades that their own ridiculous Prices, apple will not be losing any margin. IT just makes IT more flexibility. One of the benefits of this top computers, as they can be larger, take more power.

You have enough room for removable stuff inside them. They didn't do with the S. O C. They didn't do with the rain. The all make sense given the way the apple silicon on works, but they did to hope with the storage.

And it's kind of a shame for to remain the realm of uh, people who are comfortable disordering chips in everything because it's it's not easy. Watch these videos. It's not you just doing two seconds. IT takes skill and care and you problem up.

yeah. I think this the benefit of these S S, D modules being socked now is not really for us to change them. It's to make IT cheaper and easier for apple to change them in the case of service. So like you know, if in four years U S S D dies, this is probably going to be a cheaper repair that apple would have to do to repair IT, then replacing the entire logic board .

because what they would have to do before yeah, David, I points on the chat for the mac pro. You can, in fact, by apple branded as as the upgrades at apple, ridiculous Prices. So is is not .

unless grif.

Yeah no, I think they cost what you would think that they cost exactly the same as, if you can, to figure with the shame that was just same six, seven, eight times the real cost. But you can buy them and you can be sure that they will work because .

they're from apple gratious twenty eight hundred dollars, two thousand eight hundred dollars for an eight terribly S, D, A.

or eggs are two terribly for a thousand dollars. That's so much storage. thousand. Thank you. really. God, no.

Is that not yet more reasons why the mac pros trash and I right and right.

Thousand dollars for your terribles .

that rose trust. We can all agree. I mean.

that module really does look very similar to the one that's in them. I think it's probably exactly the same modules. And the max studio and some mac are IT.

So from our friend paul haddad, who is the author, one of the authors of tweet pot, and made a rest in peace and ivory. And so and so fourth, paul got a couple of minutes, I think, with the intention of returning one, if not both. And so paul had some toutes about this paul rights.

The m four mini pro eyes to see is faster comparable sizes compared to the m four mini, the m four plane. Many, if you will, and there's some weeks will put and shown out with different tudes of his that demonstrate this. Paul continues. I use the SSD SSD benchmark results from tom's hardware for the five twelve gig and for mac mini and compared to to my m four pro mac, many at the same size as sd. Uh the m four plane at five hundred twelve gigs from tom's guide is three thousand four hundred and thirty seven megabytes per second read three thousand seventeen point three. Right in comparison of the m four pro that paul has, which is at also five hundred twelve gigabits five thousand eighty five point four megabits as compared to thirty four, thirty seven and for read and five thousand three hundred and ninety seven for right as compared to three thousand seventeen so again, fifty eighty five instead of thirty four thirty seven and fifty three, ninety seven instead of .

thirty seventeen yeah and so this is the difficulty of like we're trying to suss going back and for mass and it's like benchMarks are weird because you really kind of want to run the benchMarks unlike the same machine or at the same time or in the same environment at the same temperature, shouting be that big of a deal for storage.

But i'm not entirely sure what explains this are very often you see different as is these sizes have different species because sometimes very larger sizes will like four chips instead of two, and you can read and write them all in parallel. And these speed tests are always like, what is the most fastest that I can shop on there. It's only kind of a realistic test if you're transferring individual very large files because of the wise the overhead of you doing with all the individual file.

Meddle a will swap the transfer rate. But just like what I know, what if you care about like copying huge video files, are reading and writing huge video files, uh, you know, in a video editor, something that's where you might care about this. And black magic, this speed test, try to measure this.

Why would the same size S, S, D, though, be faster on an m four pro? And IT is on an m four. I'm not sure what explains that.

Is IT a different nanda? Uh does the m four pro have more have a wider path uh, to nan than the plane? M four? I would love for somebody who is more intimately familiar with these to explain this.

I could just be that, you know, all that benchmark test was run with, you know the the the benchmark set up was different or, uh, they ran a different part of the test or something like so that's why put links and to show these two results, this is the best we could do. Because no one had these two machine sitting there. Someone had an them for, someone had for collecting the results.

You know three thousand to five thousand is a pretty big difference. And so if you care about that, maybe you like benchmark in the machine you're planning on buying before you buy. But practice the speaking if you're just if you're not doing anything that cares about the absolute fastest sequent al read and right, they probably don't care too much about this.

All right. Then I fixed to their tear down, which is only like five, six minutes long. And you can see in here, and what I was alluding to earlier, that the S S D modules are different between m four mac mini and the m4 pro mac mini。 In fact, the m four um module looks very, very similar to the mac pro module that you were talking .

about earlier, john.

and is okay. And but the m four pro looks quite a bit different, but you can see the differences in their uh tear down. Additionally, there's actually and this is super cotton.

No sarcasm. This is super freaking cool. Maybe this is always existed for other machines that I didn't realize IT, but there is an actual support document that talks about how a user could replace the S. S. D. module.

And of course, IT says, before you begin, remove the following parts, bottom covered in international plate and fan, which is not in in significant process, but they link to the instructions reach of these things, and then they tell you exactly how to do the ssp. And I am here for this again. Perhaps this, there was something that existed in, I, I wasn't war, but this is super cool. IT is worth looking at this right up on .

apple's website, just to see how well documented a little bit watched at this point. The bottom, which is plastic, which for the power button is that bottom plastic cover IT has four like little, you know, pin clip thing is that you have to unclip and also glue, because why not? And I have seen at least one youtube r crack the plastic bottom while trying to pride up with those little guitar pic.

Sort of like, little thing is like that I fix that uses IT, is a thin plastic bottom cover or is a glued. The things not waterproof doesn't like, do you need to glue IT? Like they could have just screwed the bottom, but have visible crews.

So I do. They use little pin things are the pin things is not sufficiently strong. They have to glue. When you put IT back, you're not onna glue IT. No one like no one's going to buy a little stick of the special apple glue and put IT around the room to grow the thing back together. If you're doing IT at home, maybe if they repair apple pay center, they would do that, but you're not going to.

So getting the bottom of these things is, I feel like, needlessly unfriendly, I think, is that even make too much of a man, because there are so used to prying apart things that are glue together. And this is actually easy one compared to opening up phone, ipad or something. But cheese, like it's a it's a liminal square with the plastics thing in the bottom, just something to screw the bottom and take IT off or make IT waterproof for for something I know something something to defending against casey and strings that is yeah so that's kind of a shame.

But IT isn't nice to give the instructions, and it's pretty easy to get to once you pulled out all the other stuff. One of the reasons I think the m four pro module is different is because if you look at the the images from apple repair guide or of the tair downs, you'll see that the m four pro mac mini is different on the inside. The m4 pro S O C is just playing bigger than the m four, right? And therefore has a bigger heat spread around IT and a bigger heat pipe.

And the bigger heat pipe leads to a larger copper heat sink with more fs, kind of like the max studio. When when you got the lesser models, you you get a smaller aluminum heat thinking when you got the ultra, you'd get a bigger copper one same deal here. Um and the bigger S O C takes up a little bit more room so that the place where the the S S D goes on the plane and four is a little bit too narrow.

So they put a kind of on the side in the skinnier little card. The connector is the same, like the connector is exactly the way that was. But it's just it's in a different place and it's narrower, right? So um I fix that, actually tried swapping them.

And first they just took uh like A S S D from one m for mac many and put in into another m form many and networked. So if you have two mac mini and just one SSD, you can swap up betwen them that will be fine. But then they try to put a plane m four assy into an m for pro mac money and IT sort of fits like you can.

The fact is the same. You can IT in there, but they couldn't get that to work right. So maybe that's not supported for some reason or maybe the connector was just not connecting all away because I was on an angle IT wasn't clear that the detail, their experience. But uh, these are two different modules. And if and when apple does sell these modules, make sure you're buying the right one for your specific mac money.

Hi, so we have a couple of the things we need to mention. Um first of all, there are two nand chips on the two hundred and fifty six gig model. I guess there two hundred and twenty eight gigg chips one would assume. And additionally, the wifi and bluetooth are on separate on a separate pcb, which is a little bb circular one, which was kind of interesting and is that that's the one that's mounted like in the center of the fan.

right? Very bottom. So the two nand ships is important in it's a it's commonplace now, but for a while back, uh, in the earlier apple silicon things, uh, they would ship the lowest and storage with a single two fifty six gig nand ship instead two one twenty eight and there would be roughly half the speed because you can read, write to both the chips at the same time.

And they they backtrack on that and fixed IT. And just let people know going forward. The mac many also does not do that terrible half speed S S D things. So because if you get the base storage, you get two, one twenty eight, so IT should not be a half speed drive. You will still be slower than the five in the one terbium other stuff, but IT won't be half as fast as I could be that great.

And the wifi, bluetooth being on a separate, tiny little adorable circular printed circuit board just really highlights how what a shame IT is that this thing doesn't have five seven, right? Because it's not like they need to do like uh, a bigger vision to the board like at any time they could have just you know, they could have design the whole mac many logic board and had IT already to go. And that just question of what little circular wifi, a blue true thing to be attached to IT.

And I could have been the last minute i'll put a wifi seven in there, but it's not so I guess that IT means that the next version of this IT should be easy for IT to get wifi seven and blue hues five point four whatever because IT is entirely separate. Like it's little adorable, like quarter size is printed circuit board that has all that stuff in IT is just connected with antenna wires, everything. And I think it's the bottom so can get away from the other components because all of the wireless stuff in this aluminum little cube thing is comes out the bottom of plastic, transparent.

So the wireless st stuff is, and nestled into the luminous, there is no like plastic lines, like an old iphones on the top. All the wide stuff has to come out of the bottom. That's what the circuit ard down there. But that doesn't IT very modular.

right? And then we had some questions with regard external storage, Peter alpin rights in an effort to buy pass the silly over Price storage upgrades.

The obvious move is an external sd, but I never really understood that is, what is the best set up of files and libraries eeta between an internal fifty six and a larger external drive? How would you choose which data to put there so you could get the past best performance? And additionally, denot's ley rights. You have recommended best practice for how Operator act the base level of store in a much larger, larger secondary disk. Do you make similar between file system and folders on the secondary disk, or you just turn the secondary disk into the boot drive?

So is always tRicky. Um it's kind of a shame that apple doesn't sell the market mini with an internship so small that the only thing you really put on as the Operating system.

wait, please don't advocate for them to ship smaller as as as easy.

That would be an interesting thing that they could do a little bit of the trouble. This is that um some applications I like IT when their stuff is not on the boot drive. And some apple applications historically have not liked that when their stuff is on the road drive.

And you may be asking yourself, which applications is that? How do I tell? Is there some webpage I can go to where apple will tell me that I shouldn't put my photos? Library, an excEllent driver, is supported and I can do that. Where do I find these answers? I don't know, wish apple was more afraid about that at this point.

Its apple has done IT so much and so often IT should be like going to get in full screen on the fine of that says, just F Y, I, this thing really wants you to have its stuff on the boot drive, otherwise it's onna flip out, right? Uh, I think most applications don't care about this, but it's worth looking into, in particular, photos of the one you probably care about if you have a big photo library because that's one of the biggest things a lot of people have on their max. And if you want download original problem I called for to library.

Um you d Better make sure that IT is supported external drive. I actually actually know the answer because mine is on the boot drive. But I believe IT is currently supported. I think IT maybe is not supported to have IT on like A A as or something, but I think it's supported on an external drive.

But anyway, that's that's one thing to look into this look at the applications that you use and how much data they have and see which ones you would like to be an external drive and then check whether that is supported. But with the application vender, worst case, you could probably email support or something and find out for each application. Hey, can I put your library, your data or whatever on the external drive? Keep in mind that some applications do stuff like have cash folders and things that you don't get to pick where they live if the program is not very configurable.

So they're just going to go in your root drive, whether you wanted or not, and those might be big. So you really do have to figure out how much stuff you're onna have on your international drive. But in general, I would say, is in the scenario you're going to have like boot drive and then bigger external drive on a test top that's permanently connected.

I would try to put everything on the external one, if I could, just so I ouldn't have to guess where things are, and only put things on the, on the boot drive that have to be there right now. How do you accomplish that then? This question, should I make simple links? Should I make allies? Should I make hard links to directories? How should I weave these things? So should I do the weird overlay mount thing or whatever? It's gonna annoying.

Don't use simple links. You'll be sad. Lots of programs don't handle them correctly. Uh, that you're not going to get an answer from support about whether they do that or not. You just have to find a way.

You just have to hope your programs that you care about let you put your big stuff on the external drive. It's going to be annoying because your documents filter is gonna on the boot drive and you like you don't try to move don't try to move your home director to the extra drive. Yes, you can do that, but you've sad.

It's just not well supported by apple and you're gonna to like visual stuff. So this is one of the reasons why people who have the money to pay the stupid apple tax to get the giggling tic internal drive because dealing with an extra drive is annoying. Um the best case scenario is just data files that are there, right? So you in that case, you can nothing is ever going to be reading them except for yourself.

And you can you can put an allies in your documents, solders to your external drive. Or every time you save, you can just save and select your extern drive from the open save dialogue. It's all just like data files, like video files or whatever, that should all be fine on an external drive.

But if it's like libraries are things that belonged to stuff like I my itunes library, for example, is not an next nal drive, but it's also not in my home directory. And so far that he hasn't blown up on my face. But every individual APP has a different attitude, let's say, towards you trying to make a start stuff somewhere over than where IT wants to.

And you just have to make sure IT to all supported. So I I don't mean to discourage people from doing this. I can be done, but IT is going to be annoying. There is no seamless magic way where you can just have these margin and just that looks like one big desk. I'll just make a like transparent fusion drive out of my eternal is the like. Lots of things are technically possible, but they're just not well supported enough to recommend to somebody unless you're a nerd and you just want to do IT because you think it's fun.

Yeah I don't know. I understand the motivation behind this, but I I don't think I would recommend IT. I really don't .

yeah the problem is like you are if you if you're doing this, you are entering territory that the vendors of all your software mostly don't test or even use themselves very much. Apple is one of many, like you can tell if you try to do this, you can tell that like, oh, no one or apple does this IT becomes very obviously quickly um and there are some things that do work well.

You know what I mention the itunes library that I I have found whenever going to do that, that does work well. Photos, you can move your photos library. But I did have that problem a year or two ago when I started taking up huge amounts of space on the internal drivers, kind of like unclaimed.

They're like unallocated their untracked space usage IT was really weird. Um so like IT seems like you can do again, but like you're just you're gna run into a lot of little annoyances and bugs and untested or or under tested conditions. And so you know you have to baLance that with like how much do you want to do this? How much you need do this? OK IT will IT will cost you something. Uh, so you know you you get a way all .

that when you're deciding speaking of course, some other people also asked about, uh, performance. Uh, is the extra zy gona have worse performance and national one? And I thought I had an obvious answer to that, but then I just started to do some more research to get the numbers.

And it's really weird, right? So the internal S S on max are can be extremely fast. We read before some numbers about internalized the five twelve internalize the having three thousand megabit per second read ride. But m four pro five thousand read ride you'll see them pushing up to six thousand neg bites the right on, the bigger ones right internal can be real fast.

And so first you may be wondering ing, okay, so internal can could be up to six thousand, eight, five, three, right? If I get a fast internal one, can I compete with that? An internal, uh, so thunder able three and four top out at forty gig bits per second.

That's five thousand ea bits per second. So in theory, if you had a five or six thousand and they go by per second, internal in theory, an external one. If I was the only thing contending for your could match the speed of an internal like the bus wouldn't be the bottle neck. But keep in mind that these and four things these destroys have thunder, able five, and that's eighty giga bits, and that's ten thousand negative tes.

Second, so the bus, the wire connecting your mac main to the S S D is not going to be the bottle neck most likely, right? But the now the question is, what do I put at the other end of that cable that can achieve those speeds? And at first of that, well, you probably can't find an necessity.

Is gonna as fast as as little Nancy that are real close to the the CPU with those proprietary nectaries with the religious, have a wider brussa, whatever. And I looked up lots of benchMarks and you'd see people benchmarking in the external alias these and they would be happy to get like twenty seven hundred megabits per second, radiate three thousand megabits second red, right, where the internals we're getting up to six. So like wall, the x trones are like half the speed.

That's a bomb. But then I found some reports of extra ones that were faster that seem to be close to the enter ones. So I don't know, like again, the the bus is not the the the bottle that here IT may be the so when you buy an external S S D, you should buy a thunderbird one. If you buy a product that is A A thunderous S S D, the cons thunder boat cable and uses thunder boat like protocol connection stuff, you can buy that as a stand alone product. You can also buy enclosures that support thunderball that you plug in, uh, an nbm and standard none thing into.

But then you're like which enclosure do I buy? Which enclosure has the best performance that doesn't overheat, that doesn't threat all of a certain perier time? And what S S C do I plugged into that? There's a lot of its kind of like buying an external back in the day when you buy the hard drive mechanism in the external case that IT goes in, it's tRicky.

So if you care about the absolute fastest speed, IT is easier to just find benchMarks for the building one on the act that you care about and decide whether that uh, is fast enough, but you can get very fast fees and external ISIS, just maybe not the maximum you can get on the entrance ones that I wish I could give you more concrete answer. But what what is the source of the limitations? Again, a hundred, about five.

The limitation is not the bus is something else. Maybe it's contention for the bus if you have a new stuff going on. Um so that I know is not a satisfactory answer, but just like the the answer is find benchMarks for the external S S D thing.

That you are thinking of buying whether is a standalone product or an enclosure and uh thing and decide of the benchmark satisfies what you think your needs are. And after saying all this, you maybe thinking, this is like you saying, it's so great you can do external l storage. You can upgrade the rapper.

You can do extra story. Now you extra story is useless. It's totally not like for Normal stuff where where your disk storage y is, I have huge files like say, your video editor, you can feel like any disk or storage with just huge video out, go out shoot footage at four k once one, you will fill anything.

And those files can live on an external d that just three thousand megabus per second and you can edit four k footage at that speed. Now i'm an expert video editor. Maybe the'd tell you that yeah, but you'll run into problems when you do X, Y and z with very large products of very large resolutions or whatever.

But for data files, if you just need a place to store huge dat files, a big externals, great. You and if you need every year as to the speed, maybe you can put your current project on the boot drive and IT then put back there. But yeah, like IT for most storage, what you care about is having the space to keep your stuff, not that you're constantly going to be reading all of your stuff at six thousand five per second that you can't do external storage ital.

Uh, and then of course, if you really want to spend the money, i'm sure some vender i'll tell you some insane external storage device that you know puts a bunch of assists in parallel and does get speeds that rival or exceed the loan single internal s day because you can can do that, you know. But whatever the thing is, the M K B H D bought first neck pro. It's like A P C I E carbon, like A S S D stuck on IT.

Uh then you yeah then you might run in to bang with limits. But the good is that a goal and ten thousand megabit per second and theory on three hundred five. So external start is still very useful. But IT is an uh an additional complication, which is why is a shame that for apple charges so much for the international start.

Yes, I think that's becoming my number one bug. A hair is now that the base RAM is at least reasonable. These s sd Prices are just from a different planet.

They really, really are. I mean, well, and I guess I should also be thankful that they have been raised. Prices IT seem in a lot of ways, you know, things that that should be more expensive because inflation haven't gotten more expensive.

So there is a lot to be thankful for, but war men, are they ever making IT up with these as as deep raises? Gracious, right? Let's talk. The m for west campaign did the lord's work and compiled a whole unto data on uh, single core big geek bench scores per gig hurt for the m series chips.

And is giga hurt at the singular form of that united mission?

Sorry, digger.

hurt.

Just one urt one giga hurt. That's IT one pink only, please. anyway. So yes, there's a very fancy chart in the shown notes and as well or there's a table as well a chart um that the details I had to make .

the chart when people don't post table whole numbers, no one can look at that and know that is you got a visualized that that's a charge of forts are visualizing numbers. Humans are much Better at looking at a bunch of bars or different heights than looking at numbers. Even though it's like all the information is there in the numbers is just harder to see.

yes. So I may I had the chart and you may be wondering who cares about single car performance? Preggers is just another way to demonstrate how good the m four generation is. Um so woman per giga is like so these these chips score certain score on the ee bench, single core thing. We just looking at this individual course at this a point here.

Um and whatever that score is, you can also look at the clock speed that the chip was running to achieve that score into some division and find out for each one bigger hurts, how much of the score that achieved is attribute able to that gig arts, right? Um and that matters because you might be wondering, is the m whatever faster than its processor because he is like a coron code Better chip? Or is IT just clock tired like that? They make changes to the CPU core, the individual CPU core that make a Better C P U core.

Or is that just that changes to the processor? Now let them take essentially the same C, P, U, core and just clock at higher, right? And to be clear, clock higher is great.

Back in the good old days, we used the clock things higher and they would just get faster. And I was like, free money. Those days are long gone, right? So just being able to clock them higher is great.

And we will take every ounce of that that we can get. We would love IT if that C. P, U. Never change. And they just double the clock speed every year. We there's no reason to like demand the C P, U, be quote Better at what they do in each close cycle.

But given that we can't keep dulling the clock speed every year, given the clock speed gains are hard fought and require process changes and just really is like polling teeth to get those little bit of clock speed IT would be nice if the C. P. U.

Could also do more in each turn of the crank and each one of those clock cycles. And if you look at the m one through the m four, m one pro, m one, m one pro max, m two, m three, m four, and look at the performance per giga hurts, IT has been increasing. The m one had seven, thirty eight gibson ch.

Score per g hurt. And then to go forty six, seven, six, seven, five, fifty nine, seven, seventy eight, seven, fifty one, seven fifty eight, seven sixty three. It's going up, right? We went from seven thirty eight to seven sixty three. This is performance per clock.

And by the way, obviously, the clock speeds have also increased across the whole thing, which is why, and and three is fast, right? But now look at in four bars, there are eight ninety eight eighty nine and eight ninety six. IT is a discontinuity.

M one, m two, m three barely eked out small gains in sort of architectural improvements. And all the rest of their improvement has been from cox speed, which again is great. We love IT. And you know .

the m three is certainly faster than the .

m cash increases. A lot cash cases to end on the m three as well, right? This is just cause, by the way, because multi core is very different because these have different number cars.

But just looking the individual now IT could be that all the additional performance bigger to attribute to just massively big cases and for but whatever it's attributor to IT is a discontinue. The m1, M2, m three were getting a little bit Better per clock and the m four gets a lot Better per clock. Um now we'll see you.

Does this continue or do we get m five, m six, m seven? That are also gradual but is just another way of demonstrating how much Better the m four is news. And by the way, the m force also clock up that that is not represented in this graph as graph is ignoring clock and increases.

But yeah, the entire and for generation is a pretty substantial leap over all its predecessor is in many different ways. We don't have a power charge here, but lots of people are testing these are amazed at how low power they are when they're doing nothing compared to the protests, which is also great. So about those shirts, get an m for shirt. You never get an m for mac. This is a good generation.

So yeah, the west also notes that if you look at the iphone pro scores over the last few years, there's a similar major jump of the eighteen pro performance per gigi d whatever we've done to improve the performance of this latest generation and performance course is really amazing. And then can case points out, a fun discovery this week is that an m four mac mini with four performance and six sufficiency course does a clean build up on the focus one and a half times faster than in in one ultra maximian with sixteen performance cores and four efficiency cores.

Yes, so that is a, uh, comparison of two chips that are very unlike each other, the lowest stand, m four and highest stand. And one, doing a real world task can cases only group the way of applications. And doing the thing that you need do is part of your job.

How long does the take to build this application that we develop? And after four generations of the m series chips, the slowest and four is now substantially faster than the fastest. And one that was the result in a real world multiple task yeah that .

this is something I mean, the progress we've made in processor performance just since the apple silicon error even you know even if you only consider the public era within itself.

if you considering how compared .

on a chip IT was amazing. One strayed everything before IT. And even just when you look at what we have done since the m, one we actually immediate was what, four years ago, no, a little four years ago like that. So that was me of not, you know, four years as a long time in computers. But when you compare the gains we've had in the apple silicon era versus what we were getting in the intel era for like the previous fifteen years, you with intel chips, you were lucky if you are getting maybe five to seven percent per year faster, like IT, you are not getting this kind of gain. So this is just an incredible run so far, and i'm sure it's going to know it's going to eb and flow and like how quickly things progressed over time, but we're just in a really great error right now.

Yeah, if you look at, by the way, intel now is getting A T S M C to manufacturer, uh, all are parts of its chips because of its processes is good. So the intel chips are like there was all this noise about them being appetitive. When we talked about the the call on h chips is being competitive, all those intelligible and call on chips and we were talking about them, they were all comparing themselves to the m three.

And we always know the m four was coming. And it's like like I was fair to compare IT to whats on the market because they're comparing their chips to what you can buy now and you can only buy three max now. Well, that time is over.

You can buy and four ones now and they're amazing. so. Too bad for intel l stuff and for cocom stuff.

Uh, they had their brief moment in the sun when they were within shooting distance, within whatever the expression is, within punching distance of apples. Then best line of chips. But the m force are here now and they have jumped out.

I had fairly comfortable ly and all measures than anyone cares about IT. Obviously not just the S O C. Everything has to do with the m vores.

That all the architectural changes, the although IT is the member controllers in the storage stuff is related to the soc as well. But it's everything, these computers um that you know that how far we've come, we wait for four generations of S O C. And the slowest one is faster than the faster the original serious chips.

So we're making good progress, is great to see. Uh, it's still it's hard fought, right? That requires billions of dollars in new process and lots of difficult chip design and lots you know, it's not easy. That was back in the old days. We and get faster. Those days are long gone, but that's why so great to see that it's not like, oh, the mon came along and I was amazing and then I just kind of platov after their nope, there's still making good gains uh whatever brain drain happened from when all the apple silicon people left to form new via and that got bt by calm. Apparently IT has not been enough to uh completely cripple apples ability to make good chips because the m four chips are great.

So we said fits in sports of news over the last months, maybe two months, about some sort of home device that apple was flirting with. And we had the biggest, I guess, like summary in a little bit new ws from of as you would expect, my germin. Ah this was yesterday as we record this, there's a lot to read here and apologize for that. But I think all of this is interesting and is a pretty good summary. And also like I said, some new .

information is not just a summary. This is where that we've talked about this home pot of the screen for, I think more than multiple months. I think it's been a long time. We've been talking about this a lot of time.

We talked about IT um specifically about the robot ARM that's going to make the screen point or whatever and that was all like apples planning a product is like a home pipe but the screen that might ever robot ARM let me tell you about IT. But this dump from german here is like, alright, that time is over where we talk about a ague product that apple has. Let me tell you about the specific product that apple is going to release.

And this has tons of details that have not been in there before. I said that he might well included like a name and a product shot like this. That's why we have included all these details because this is, you know, when you read the Green stories. So it's like apple might be looking at this and looking at that and then you read the government stories is like, here's what's coming out, you know, next week and he tells you everything about the machines.

This like that there enough. So let me start reading. The device has a roughly six interest Green and looks like a square ipad. There's also a camera at the top front over chargeable, built in battery internal speakers. Apple plans to offered in silver, in black options.

The product has a touch interface that looks like a blend of the apple watch Operating system in the iphones recently launched a stand by mood, but the company expects most people to use their voice interact with the device. Hardware was designed around APP intense, a system that lets A I precisely control applications and tasks, which is said today. But in the coming months, the product will be marketed as a way to control home home appliances.

Ces chat with theory and hold into concessions via apple's face time software will also be loaded with apple apps, including ones for web browsing, listening to news updates and playing music. Users will be able to access their notes, encounter information, and the device can turn on this into a slide show to display their photos. Apples ardy planning, a more expensive followed version, because, of course, they are with BOC limb that can move the screen around.

The higher end product could be Priced as at as much as a thousand dollars, which if you follow Jason smells math, which is double whatever you think you should will be then is two thousand dollars. The display only device will be far less than that and approaching the cost of competitors products. And for referencing echo show, eight is Price at one hundred fifty box.

While the echo hub is hundred and eighty, the nest hub max costs two hundred and thirty dollars. Apples design different attachments for the device, including ones that have fix the screens and walls. There will be bases with additional speakers that can be placed in the kitchen.

Or we've got play date docker over again on a nightmare on a desk. The screen device, which runs a new Operating system code name pebble too soon, will include sensors to determine how close the person is that will then automatically adjust its features depending on the distance, for example, of users or several feet away. IT might show the temperature as they approach the interface, can switch to a panel for adJusting home thermostat, is very clever.

During development, I discussed launching an APP stores part of the device, but IT recently decided to exclude this feature, at least in the initial version that sound familiar. The product will be a standard on device. We can Operate almost entirely on its own, but IT will require iphone for some tasks, including parts of the initial set up, apple hopes that can sell multiple units of the device to consumers who will place them around the house and use them several times today.

So that is a product that is the product that is less, I like to say less than one thousand dollars according to this remark because I don't know it's going to be two hundred dollars or hundred thirty, but less than a thousand dollars. No apps, no APP store IT is an appliance in the sense of the home pod. I guess you don't buy apps for home pods, right? They just put them in your house.

They do a thing. They hopefully are inexpensive. And the thing that they're going to do is, is going to be a screen that lets you do home stuff and maybe look at some photos and maybe you face time stuff, uh, and that is, I think, a pretty reasonable Price.

Lots of the rumors are so concentrating on that robot ARM and thinking it's going to be like in your kitchen table, running you on, turning the screen around. But it's like this is just people still always like an ipad. I ham, I will all sow up at first, ipad are super expensive.

And second, ipad don't have software that lets them do the things that this thing is gonna. This is really like, I think of IT is like apples ecb or something similar to that or you I guess the echo show is kind of similar as well. Like I would like the idea that this doesn't have apps initially because IT forces apple to say make this product useful with just the stuff that IT comes with.

You should be able to fit with all your home stuff and see what temperature is and adjust your thermostat and is needed. You can also talk to IT and have a device is system stuff, and they can show pictures of your family. And I guess you could do face time if you had IT on the kitchen counter or something.

But really, I just see this as being sold as like in a fancy house to control house stuff. You'd have a couple of these hanging around and there would be nicer than, and he could be nicer than a nest integrated into apple ecosystem. Uh, and IT opens the door for potentially apple to sell devices that connect to this and do interesting stuff. S of our apple hasn't been interested in that they don't sell the thermostat, they don't sell the smart lights, they don't sell us. So they just, you know, they do home kit and they support matter and thread radios and what stuff, but they don't sell devices that connect to this. But if this is not an APP store play, but is instead just a electrical product, you back from an apple to solve a problem for a single Price one time that this point is actually a novel and refreshing, which is may be sad, but that's how I feel about just like yeah less than a thousand dollar thing that's not a football on ipad that I don't want to be a full blown ipad, that justice home stuff what does IT in a nice way of the pleasant interface with no ads that never asked me if I want to reorder something that is ordered from amazon, I give that thumbs up.

I I have two major concerns about this kind of as presented. Number one, this is exactly the kind of product that apple historically has kind of put out there. And the neck let and then he died.

I think the entire home pod line you can look at and say, um that's the predecessor of this. How's that going? If I kept working though.

like I the biggest I I kind of hope that might I could be that doesn't keep getting updated in doing word self. I just wanted do exactly what he does now forever and not break.

Well, here's problem though. Number two things I worried about is this sounds like IT depends a lot on homework IT and homecourt accessory and the market of home could accessories and how good they are and how health that that equals system is. And that's not a great thing I would depend on.

You know, I have a bunch of home kid stuff. It's a mixed bag. And over time, IT does not seem like it's going in a great direction.

Um IT seems like again, IT seems because of one of the things has been put out there and then just kind of sits around and we see a story play out with home kit that we see a lot with apple, which is they declare a certain standard. That standard ends up being more expensive or harder to implement than people making their own standards or other computing standards. And as a result, there is not much of ecosystem.

There is a handful of partner brands and not much else. That's what we see with homework at the end. Homecare adds to IT the the other problem of apple not caring that much about IT.

So the apple home map is kind of a mess. Home cut itself is kind you know spot um here and there. Um it's not nearly as reliable as um dedicated systems like know the phillip's systems are like lutrin caa like rather they can kind of have their own protocols.

Those are way more reliable. You don't see a lot of home kit products being released. You don't see that he was especially thriving. So whatever this product is, the government is talking about the square wall pad thing. Whatever this is, controlling home devices should probably not be a major reason why people would buy this because I think that's going to be disappointing and and probably neglected.

Now the other parts of this from a text point of view, as soon as apple released standby mode on the iphone, we were all saying like, why isn't this just like an ipad that you can stick somewhere, be like an appliance? You know, IT seems like they made this system on the iphone, which is like this whole environment where you're kind of running these blown up but small information density, which gets in kind of this like appliances y kind of mode um that is that is indeed screaming out for like more product to expand what that does. But even that apple put that out there and kinds didn't do anything with that after that, they they put IT out and kind of walked away whistling like a cartoon character.

Are they going to invest more in that? Is IT onna work Better, is not going to have Better capabilities. Is that going to be a little but easy to develop? Fork standby is not supervised to developed for.

Um and then we moving into the apple tent system that this is allegedly based on, which again, that's part of apple intelligence I that's that's part of the plan for like the next year part of apple intelligence where IT will hopefully able to index and then start Operating um on apintment without a APP exposed. but. That first of all is an A P I.

That doesn't exist yet for an area of IOS, which is intense, that history ally has been very limited, a little bit bugging, very hard to developed for. And now you're launching IT, allegedly or developing or kind of relying on that ecosystem, which is difficult bugging and not well supported and largely and existence so far integrating that with apple intelligence, which is not you it's barely existing so far. That's that's into very early days trying to build upon siri, which so far we're still waiting for to get good.

Uh, IT hasn't. Yeah and quick a quick side here. I think IT was a huge mistake to launch the series U I.

Redesign with the colorful border around the screen before IT is the apple intelligence version of theory that they should have pared those in theatres. What people see now is, oh, serious, different. This is the update.

great. And then you ask to do something that still sucks, and then you think apple intelligence sucks. I think that was a terrible marketing move.

To split that off. The colorful border should indicate this is the new apple intelligence theory. And if that series isn't ready yet, we shouldn't be seen the color face ball yet. Anyway, that's an aside. So going back to to the square pad wall thing, IT seems like this is a product in this know mark german conception, but i'm sure is incomplete and missing a lot of the point and way less cool and missing some of the features, fine.

But in this version of what i'm hearing is here's a product that we're kind of not sure where this fits in a lot of people's home's lives and budgets being built upon a bunch of kind of unreliable or often neglected parts of apples. Texas and business, I don't know. I am a little wary of this product the way to described so far.

I kind of like IT because the competitors are so terrible like ample visiting a my brother california, they wanted something in their house. They could just show like their calendar, right? You know they're gool calender, whatever they're using.

But IT was like somewhere convenient in the house, like in the kitchen or on the wall or whatever, just so they can keep track of selves. They don't have to like look on their phone or scroll or whatever, is counters are big. You need to see lots of stuff.

That type of appliance, a relatively inexpensive comparative, like an ipad thing. They can just show your calender and like the weather in the time, people buy those that do literally nothing else, they don't have any apps that don't have any features that don't control any home stuff. All they do to show their calendars, not even interactive, you can even interact, just shows your calender and the events at the time and maybe the weather.

And it's like, you know hundred dollars and it's some weird android tablet and they buy IT and this they're happy with IT. Like the fact that doesn't uh, have apps, I think is key for this product. I hope that never has apps because I just wanted to be a inexpensive and apple land, which problem means like two two hundred ninety nine dollars, whatever.

But still like a thing that's not an ipad, a thing that is inexpensive compared to an ipad that just does a limited number of things and looks nice and doesn't have ads on IT IT doesn't constantly want you to buy things and know isn't doing weird, creepy stuff for whatever has good security. It's not selling any new your information and that just does something boring, right? I think there's a market for something like that I ve always wish that apple would make.

One of these things is a lot of the third party once you have questions of like is is just consulting you've selling me things is that you know listening to here what T V shows are watching at some that information to some data broker or whatever, apple is the company that I trust to do a simple thing that just shows the time in the weather, shows the family calendar, shows the slide show of, you know, photos of my kids when it's idt, right? And if, as a bonus, you can also control my home kit enabled thermes, that are something that's great, right? And you know setting aside how good home kids going, I don't have a lot of experience with home stuff, but seems like there is no what the exception of luck, which like flow this and works perfectly but is not a sort of smart uh like smart APP platform or anything.

I don't think they have anything equivalent. The big thing with the screen, with exception of of instructive stuff, that amazing everything that tries this is something nicer, uh ends up being kind of like flaky or annoying or just sort of not up to the apple standards. So I think apple should have a product like this.

And yes, they should also make the home kit stuff Better. And they need to deal with that and they need to actually use all the thread radio that are shopping ever that rises, by the way, of the mac. Money also has a thread radio, I don't know, mentioned the anymore.

But like apple, everything apple sells has throw radio. Where is IT good for? Where is IT being used for? Who know? Someday i'll be super important. But anyway, apple does need to share that up. But setting all that aside, just a little cheap screen that's not a hand me down ipad that comes with mounting hardware that you can stick somewhere in your house that looks nice and does a simple thing. I think that's a good product.

I questioned why apple i'm a kind of not question I I can amazing and apples building IT because I currently don't see these services revenue angle, and that seems like everything that makes sense to have that angle. But this has no apps, no, you know, a cut of percentage of developers, stuff for IT, presubscribed, scription of them, maybe I cloud they can integrate into. That is just a thing you buy is nice, that does the something in your home.

And I long for products like that, that are not jumped up. And I hope that's what this is now, what this is. And they get all tied up with a robot ARM thing and try to pitch.

This is the ultimate home kit console for a fantastic y house that doesn't actually exist outside of apple's little model home, where everything is control by home Kitty and all works. yeah. Because now in real life, people have ring door bells, people have google security cables, people have all sorts of different stuff in.

This thing is not going to help you like integrate the horizon ous smart home and clarified all and connect with homes like that's not this product, right? But in that case, i'm just like continues to show me account there in o'clock in the weather and maybe I buy like the bar is low is what i'm saying like the bar for stuff like this, the bar is really low. It's hard to fine stuff like this that is actually nice.

Yeah, I don't know. I've never had any of the screen based assistance in my house. We did have the original very tall tubular echo. We have a couple of echo dots that we almost never used, to be honest. In fact, there is one in our our primary bedroom that about the only time I ever gets used is for me to tell you to ignore, clear my notifications after delivery from amazon or occasionally penny will go to sleep in her bed, in bedroom or wear downstairs watching T, V. And so I will do a drop in up to the bedroom to tell her to come downstairs and go be before we go to bed.

We've one of those dots to, by the way, and IT is basically the amazon has delivered something like you and I like IT for that function. I like that I when IT lights up, let me know that there's a package and I may I won mind for free in a work contest. So I didn't even paid for IT, but IT keeps working. And when I tell declar notifications, that does every time. And when I do my little three voice assistant competitions from the the dining room table, IT participates gaming so well worth the year dollars I paid for IT go to.

yeah I don't know. I've never had, like I said, a screen based one in my in my house where in my life and I have some friends or we have some friends that are local and we will be at their house from time to time and they have I don't even know the name of the device, but it's a amazon device that is a screen that looks roughly the size.

Will laptop screen you ever take a little bit? And IT seems to me like it's a rotating billboard of stuff that I am deeply uninterested in. Now that very well could be that that's how they set IT up.

And maybe I would set IT up differently in Better or whatever the case may be. But based on that one experience, no thanks. That doesn't mean that this doesn't have a place in my life, particularly if it's done with little more taste, which I assume apple wood.

But knowing what little I know now, I don't feel like I have a need for IT. But that's also the same thing I say about every freaking device that have ever makes. So here we are.

Yeah I mean, like I think you're experience with you seeing a lot of mediocre in the amazon products with screens that mirrors. I think almost every report have ever heard about them that and I I even had the very first echo show that was the very first echo with a screen that I actually bought one and return IT with him like one day of having IT.

Because, you know, what we very quickly learned with the eco series is that you can trust amazon with the screen. They just use IT to promote stuff at you. You are you're literally paying them money to have them advertise.

And yet in your face um and that's that's not a great product experience for most people. You can turn off some of those things, but then I go to add new ones and up you in because that's a wonderful trick that for summer reason is legal. So what we see is like we see the failure modes of these products.

In amazon's case, the failure mode is they just use that as an advertising channel to to spew ads at you in various forms, whether it's promoted news stories or direct actual. Just add, like whatever IT is their spewing to that you you don't want. In apple's case, the failure mode will be unreliability and neglect. So we have to see like you I think I I will trust apple for the most part, not absolutely, but for the most part, I trust apple not to be as a greece has amazon in spending us with stuff we don't want .

now and room. And as a new apple TV plus show filling, the entire screen will know that they failed in this regard.

Hey, have about a sports team score that I don't care about. You know, you can catch this right now on apple T.

V plus. That is a user interface failure. Apple is not trying to sell. And anyone, the sports cores there just scores there, just annoying us in ways that we could not figure how to stop without extreme effort. So that is not bad, I right.

But the apple TV plus shows, I think, is an example of them being like because they put them in the keynotes. Now it's like while we've got your attention, did you know is a new T V. Show coming out on the service that .

we want to rub or you you know you can also see them in various ways. They have eroded the user experience on IOS over the over the years to do things like harass you with notifications and full screen takeovers and stuff for things like if you haven't bought apple music, if if you aren't that music describer and try to use the music APP. Good look at that.

Um if you don't buy apple care for your phone, you would have the setback up. Good luck with that. Uh they they do advertise at us and and they are getting more, more shameless about IT um and and so I I would expect part with this to not be immune to that, but I think IT would be A A vastly different level lower than what amazon does with their ego show series.

So anyway, so now we see this this kind of product line. The problem with you know google also has their own versions of this, and I don't have any experience with them. John, your google things on of screens, right?

No, I just just looking at the next top max, which looks very much like is what apples competing with. Its the more expensive one. It's like a little uh, android tablet on an angle on a little stand that probably does all the things that and tabs do, but in a more limited hoe version of IT.

That definitely just looks mean google is not going to be advertising you to you as much as amazon is, but it's like a google ecosystem version of this. And I feel like that is probably apple target is the next tub max with its functionality. But IT, it'll be in the apple ecosystem as well. So if you just did want something to show you your gool content or maybe the next top max is the answer, but I hadn't actually use this, so I don't know how annoying ing IT is and how flexible is.

Yeah I mean, you know I don't think about IT. We will see I don't haven't really hearing and think about people who use this. So I don't think there is a lot of them um but I would suspect that might suffer as many kind of you say google projects do probably from a lack of attention, but that's just speculation.

And google google is a little bit more invested in the educ .

system than apple is, let's say sure sure. But but I do think know amazon historical is the the most egregious at spamming you through their elected products, through the echo products like with with extra commentary that promotes some stuff you can do with extra content, extra thing showing up on your screen. Um so you know we know what the amazon products, how that fails. Apple just seems like if they're going to do this again, we don't know much about this, obviously, but if they're going to do something like this, IT seems like a rest on a lot of assumptions about subsystems that work Better than they do, a lot of architecture and infrastructure that doesn't seem to exist.

IT is barely being deployed in the form apple intelligence into a market of hardware that is not nearly as good as apple proportions to be or wants IT to be with IT, with home kid stuff and relying on the market of software in this year in the form of apps and up intense and things like that, we're like, how do we know after you even going to take a venge of apintment, how many people actually going to adopt this new API? How many actually going to want to be controlled headley ly through syria and apple intelligence without making you go into the APP and see all the apps promotion stuff? It's so like there's a lot of kind of faith going into this product from the way to describe here that i'm not sure I would have a lot of strong confidence in.

So I don't know this. This remains to be seen. I do see the market for a dashboard type of thing, but I don't know that that's this. But I guess we will find out. I mean.

the Price is enough IT. Doesn't all your concerns really don't much of a difference because it's like, well, think of this way, uh, do you currently have an old ipad that you used to listen to music in your kitchen? Well, this is a cheap version of an older ipad that using and to listen music, if you describe apple music and then tell you listen to music you ready subscribed to, currently using an old ipad in your kitchen.

This probably be, it'll be cheaper than the ipad was when I was a new IT will come with a little speaker stand seeing which presume will have Better sound than your ipad speakers and it's designed for this is got a little stands. You don't have to prop IT up on something or maybe it's even waterproof. Now that won't be but you know you can dream right like and you can do face time from that more easily because you will have that you know center stage camera, whatever thing and maybe the robot, like, even if IT does, none of the things you are just worried about, you don't use for any of that.

You literally use that as the the equivalent of the radios that used to be mounted to the underside of cabinet and kitchen are over those like, yeah, i'm rady like that's what this is for the modern area. And IT is one hundred percent of straight up. P replacement for in apple households are button in the apple ecosystem, that old kid ipad that you have in the kitchen to look at recipe, listen to music, right? And that's like if it's, if it's two ninety nine, there you go.

If he does nothing else, its entire life exit for those things. When your old ipad breaks or some kid knocks at over or finally dies or the battery swells or something, your replacement is not to go look for a used ipad or try to take one of your kids all wants to. Your replacement is to buy this thing.

So I guess the bar is really low if this thing really is one ninety nine or two and ninety nine IT doesn't have to do everything under the sun, all of the dreams about APP tense and syria eventually getting good and controlling your magic home kit house, where everything works, doesn't have to do any of that. Still, it's worth the money if IT actually is cheap. Now, thousand thousand dollar went with the robot ARM.

Now maybe he needs to do something more useful. We will see how that goes. But all my hopes are pinned on this thing. Actually being inexpensive and doing the things that an old ipad currently doing in people's kitchen.

I don't think it'll be inexpensive other that on with you, but I don't think IT be inexpensive.

Prices is one of the most difficult to uh, you know get rumbles about because I can change at any time. But a man, this is ball parking in the saying the expensive one as a thousand and the other one is trying to match competitors the cost in the low hundred ds. So we shall say I mean.

I think it's it's very clear that the correct way to Price IT is to be competitive with your competitors or if you're going to do the apple thing and go up market a bit, then you need to be in the in spitting .

distance of the competitors to and I agree.

but I fear that the home people are gonna there and be like, well, we have all the sweet tech.

Well, the speaker stand will also be two ninety nine exactly.

But like even the even whatever on board speakers there are not played dog, if you will, but the on board speakers, you know, the hometowns going to be like, you know, we have all the sweet as tech that we can just drop in their liquid split and it's going to be great and also with us dollars, but it'll be great, great and sound amazing in the kitchen. So I I don't know. I I i'm hopeful that this is cool.

I love the idea. What did he say something like when you're at a distance it'll just show the temperature and very little else than as you approach IT like shows you controls for the age fact that's very slick and that's the kind of affordances and design that that we love from apple. The thoughtful ful is that we love from apple.

That's what every nest and ecosystem son has done forever .

yeah every smart home service that does that. But personally, they have a large high resolution display and stand by mode and which stuff they can do smarter things like my you know my equably does that as well. But like that's why I have hopes for the Price of the things.

My equal thing was not expensive. And IT has IT. I can do voice assistant with IT. IT does apple's voice system. Uh, I has a proximately sensor and may granted all, does this control my pete and cooling, but IT works with a home kid. IT works with its own APP and IT was cheap and IT continues to function. And I am perfectly happy with that as long as he keeps doing exactly what it's doing that my hopes for this product, but that IT will be like that, which I can said unusual for modern apple because everything seems to have a play or an angle or some kind of integration. And this could just be a straight up useful electronic gadget that you can buy from apple that differentiates itself from its competitors by being hard quality and being listening with ads.

I'll see i'm certainly interested even though, like I said, I don't feel like I have a need for this in my life. And our kitchen doesn't exactly have an over buttons of space unless you're mounting IT on the wall. And then if mounted on the wall that you powered to IT, unless you do that, we're charging dance mark A U magnetic.

Take your fridge well.

except our fridge is new stand still fridge. It's mostly not magnetic or whatever whatever the situation is where most of the isn't magnetic. I know IT if it's cool enough, I will find a reason to buy IT.

It's for my work, you too, you see it's for my work. But I mean, i'm interested for sure. And I love the idea of apples starting to get back into home stuff. I mean, as we've all lamented many times, even though I really do like my hero set up and they are past sponsor, I would love to have apple, you know, take a crack at this. At home networking, which I don't think they have any interesting to be clear.

But you know them starting to do stuff in the home at at least IT IT gives me hope you you're saying there's a chance and what we will see what happens, but I don't know. I'm even though I don't think this is something that i'm seeking. I am definitely cautiously optimistic about IT.

We are sponsor this week by tail scale. So imagine you're the kind of person that would listen to a show like the accidental tech podcast, and perhaps you're the kind of person that has a home lab of servers at home or perhaps you've deployed servers to various thing cloud providers like len or something like that. And you wanted to be able to treat each of these different devices as though they're on the same local area network, even though they are very much not.

Well, I have the solution for you. The solution is tail scale. What tail scale does is that gives you secure remote access to anything that you want to place on your tail net.

So any of your devices, this can include senores, gies, among many other things. And IT gives you an easy to deploy, zero config, no fast way of connecting all these devices. It's incredibly, incredibly cool.

The way the tail scale can punch little holes in firewalls is just bananas. They've wrote written a whole bigs way page about IT. You should check that out even if you don't like taye scale because it's that cool.

So again, tail scale lets you've treat all of your devices as are on the same land, even if you're not if you have access to your stuff at home. But then you take your phone out of the house and suddenly you've lost access to your home lab. Not me more, baby, because you can install tail scale across the board and make IT work as though you're always on the same land.

IT is truly bananas. They can't pain me to tell you that this is, I think, my favorite tech discovery of twenty twenty four IT. Really, really, is that amazing? So what should you do? You should do me a favor, but especially do yourself a favor and go to tail scale dock concert, P T A I L S C A L E dock cont p check out their personal plan.

IT is and always will be free. You can get up to one hundred devices and three users for free. No credit are required. They don't try to upsetting you aggressively.

This company is seriously so chill and so cool and I would not have any chill if I wrote this software because it's it's that amazing. So go to tail scale 到 com flash atp and check IT out today。 Thank you to tail scale for sponsoring the show.

right? You won't use mt p him down that a few minutes. I feel like we'll start with Andrew slay or maybe Andrews lay anyways, this person who hates we've all we are all relieved that minimum has been increased to sixteen gig bites ross new mac models.

But we know this is high apple intelligence as a position a purchaser. Should I be concerned that half this RAM is a quote spoken for by A I, and I will still need to upgrade further to get the sixteen gigs to use myself? Or do I have the wrong mental model of how rem works? You know, it's funny.

This is brought up because I can't speak for how works for artificial intellect stuff. And maybe one of you can clue me in on this. But I feel like the thing that gives me even more pause is the coal video RAM because that's also shared.

You know, this seems to be interrupted when you're ready on speaking on truth. But I feel like we're sharing rain between not only the system, not only apple intelligence, but also no video, the the graphics card and that's that is starting to get spread kind of thin. That being said, I don't think that it's really spoken for in the way that Andrews lay, Andrews lay is thinking of. So what's the reality here?

I would think about the unified mary architecture, whether is no dedicated v RAM. I would think of what I hear people say that, well, you don't know, silica, le silk uses less than than hand wave reasons.

right? No, you actually need more.

Yeah, the source of that urban legend is essentially that the original apple silent max were amazing, and the access is for fast. The CPU is fast. And they could get away with swapping in ways that these older, slower into m acs.

With older, slower S S D and older slower RAM could not. And so people started to believe that I also can mac somehow need half the RAM, uh, intel mac, uh and maybe true that the apple silicon mac with half the RAM could run circles around an intel mac. But it's not because there was something magical about apple silicon that said I would doesn't need RAM anymore.

You still need RAM. Yeah, just everything else was so much faster that you would you would overall probably still .

be you would absolutely be faster. And what made business people run benchMarks? And like, how is this a gig by m one macbook air beating this three, two gig? Intel thing is because apple look is amazing.

The S S S are fast. The rain was fast. They were really good. But IT doesn't mean you don't need DRAM. But anyway, in that aside, uh, I wouldn't worry about uh apple intelligence stealing all the and first of all, most of the apple intel gent things that apple has shipped and announced shouldn't be doing anything with your RAM if you're not using them.

So if you're worried about RAM at all, don't fire up those elms and ask them to do a bunch of stuff for you and they are not going to be there like reserving sixteen gies for themselves, which techland they could know. You can wire pages down or whatever. But nothing that apple really does in their Operating system text do something at that scale.

So do not worry about that. There has more RAM so that if IT needs to IT can use the whole bunch when call the bond to do so. But IT will not be sitting there hugging half of your RAM, doing nothing right in second, even you are doing stuff, presuming whatever you do with apple intelligence will be kind of like birthday.

All i'm gonna do a thing now where I want you to generate image for me. You're fix this writing and then you'll be done with that, and then I will go away. And hopefully apple have written these things such a way that you get that RAM goes back into the free pool and that that process exits and is done doing whatever that was doing.

And now you're back to you, you know, working with your mac the way that is. And finally, ago eight gigs is probably too little. They doubled IT. They didn't just make IT nine or ten. So I think they have enough headroom that is not like you remember that you're doing apples how and stuff on phones that their entire RAM is eight gigs and you're worry the apple intel me alone is going to use IT that's not gonna en, right? So I would not worry about this is not the wrong mental model of rain works.

I think it's just not the right um scale for thinking about how much RAM apple intelligence is going to use and how long it's going to need IT and when it's going to need IT. Uh, sixteen gigs is good even like I said, if you worry about at all. First one I think I mean in the current Operating system, you can literally turn off apple until the title switch mean settings.

I don't know that what he does, but IT makes me think that it's like lucky you don't want any this stuff. You don't have to use IT in prison where I would say around. But even when I talk switch on, if you don't call upon IT to do anything, if you don't ask you to revise your writing, if you don't try to generate an image, if you don't ask you a question, it's can not to take a lot of around. And you can convince yourself of that by booting any modern apple silicon c that has apple intelligence and just boot into the finder and then pull up activity modern, look how much RAM is being used and compared IT to, like the previous version, that excess of that apple intelligence. I don't think you're going to see a big difference.

A Henry seven in rights, what's blocking apple from upgrading the studio display with the kind of backlight tech that mac appose have to enable HDR understanding that steers splay has constant backlight behind LCD and macao o has buy zone variable backlight behind LCD. Apple clearly already has the firm where that news had to drive macro, ole, city and back light layer and combination to produce an HDR result.

What's preventing apple from putting a MC style, micro o style, back light and firm where and studio display form factor at the studio display Price point? I think you just answered question, is the backlight plane hard to scale up despite TV scaling minimally backlight to even larger sizes while staying less expensive than to display xr? Are the LCD layer substantially different than the two cases? And that's the hard, less expensive part to scale up? Surely apple wants the entire line up to do HDR eventually.

Why isn't there? Why isn't apple there yet with the studio display? Quick aside, which just made me think about this.

Um I went to the upper store the day just to look and i've succeeded and just looking the new mac. Many freaking adorable and very light, but freaking adorable. So cute.

I kind of want one, but the macbook O I brought my m three macapp o and set at next to four macpro and cranked up the brightness and both anger into this is inside apple store. Everything frequent, know it's like a sun is shining in there anyway. But IT was noticeably different.

How much brighter the m for maco pro was. I wouldn't say it's a nineteen day, but you can tell the difference. I just occurred to me just now didn't think to look or ask if there was A A anorexia one, but just the brightness alone made me jealous, jealous enough to spend thousands of dollars to play to replace my one year old one.

Absolutely not, but jealous nevertheless. With regard to Henry's question, I think john, you're probably best to to answer them. Take a stay about IT.

I think IT is expense in no small part. I think the technology is probably to Henry point there. It's just for whatever reason. And I don't know why maybe john can fly in. It's gotta be really freaking expensive. Also, apple seems to forget that they make displays because they haven't updated your bef IT X D R like fifteen years and the studio display and since it's been since been released. So so many should remind them that these exist and maybe we'll will get answers.

They answered a hundred question, what's blocking up from our grading the study display with the kind of backlight and pros? Nothing, absolutely nothing. There is nothing stopping them.

They could they could keep the Price the same. They wouldn't, but they probably make them more expensive. But no, this tech exists. They put IT in their laptops.

They there's it's easier to put IT in a giant display like that because it's bigger than you have my room for all the stuff they could do IT. And that would probably be more expensive because there would be a Better display and you know whatever, but they absolutely could. Nothing is stopping that.

That's not so frustrating. They just haven't decided uptake this place and when they do update them, presume little get all this stuff, but right now, kind of like the mouse and the keyboards, but just not updating them. Like note, it's just we sell the study display.

We sell the X, D, R Prices the same. It's always been they do exactly what they always did someday maybe update them. Uh, if you are a long time level fan, you know that they do not take their displays very often.

They just don't why don't think it's incredibly frustrated, but they absolutely could. There's not some super expensive, difficult to do things. There's plenty of PC monitors that do all the stuff that are way cheap.

Err in the study displaced as their PC monitors. Obviously, apple does IT be more expensive. Nothing is stopping up. That's what's so frustrated.

And we're all we're just out here waiting like, well, they'll updated someday and when they do, we can buy. But in the meantime, this is what they have to offer. Take IT believe .

IT alright ah then ryan tenney write your recent discussion on launchers. Maybe wonder what is the power user hack you can't live without, or customization, which makes all other max feel broken for me, IT is a multiple tt mouse where I have a sign shortcuts for anner copy, paste command tab to move back to the last APP i've arise.

And so I tried to minimize my use of the keyboard, and this lets me navigate through tests with the mouse dramatically faster. I was think about this. I'm sure that they are answers to this question, but i'm struggling to think of what they are.

I am a big believer in hot corners. I've been trying to teach myself to use the gestures on the magic track pad instead for much of the same things that I use hot corners for. But old habits die hard.

Also, i'm an Alfred die hard Alfred person. So I feel like a computers broken without Alfred, and I guess, rockets, which I will probably forget the link in the show notes. But it's the thing where you can basically type out the name of an emerging and it'll just insert whatever your cursor is. Um that's about all I can think of. I don't know, marco, what if you've gotten terms of power user hacks?

I get the ones that trip me up the most when i'm on someone else. This computer, there is two. The second dorst one is the lack of a clippard manager.

Because I will so often, like, you know, because i've been using launch bar clipper management for so many years now. So often I will treat the clipboard like a stack. If I need to copy and paste two different things into two different fields from one place to another, I will cut, I will go.

You know, the first one in commencer, then who'd the second one and IT command see? Because that will stack them up in the clipper manager. Then when I go to the destination, i'll pace the first one. Then i'll use the, the, the, the, the key to invoke clip manager to go down one and pace the second one.

Well, if you don't have a clipper manager, IT works until you go to place second one and then you go, oh wait, this is just broken, just gone like thing you copy before now it's just gone because the the other one also wrote IT. Um so that is one thing that that check me up for sure. But the biggest thing by far, that trip you up almost immediately upon using any other computer during the original touch bar era, when the escape key was in the touch bar, I remapped escape to be the caps lucky.

So when I use a mac, I, when I want to hit escape, I hit caps lock. You can do this there. You don't need a third party APP to do this. You can do this right in the keyboard. Uh, is called the modifier keys section and settings.

Now when I go to any other computer, I constantly hit up slog instead of hiding, escape, nothing tripping of fashion that and I I suppose I could train myself back to the escape key. I just haven't had a reason to yet. And it's so much faster to have your pinky right there heading that key that then you then reaching up to the escape key like it's much like if you don't have a good use for caps lock map ID is something that you use a lot. It's really nice until you use a one of computer. But until that moment, it's really nice and escape is a good .

one and speaking remap in my him, I I understand why you're ride escape, but I always kind of like the fact the escape is in the upper left is kind of like the escape est place. He more looking at the corner, you know I mean um but when I was in college, uh the I believe IT was sun, the sun branded keyboards that they came with your son computer. I had control where cap oxes just like was literally that was the control key on the keyboard.

If you do anything with control a lot like unique. Or are you doing IMAX stuff set inside the medicine, just having control over cap locks? Es, that was so convenient and so natural that I really got used to that for a while.

But, you know, then I stopped using some computers and didn't bother remapping. Uh, and a lot of people do to the stay. I max, like marker said, it's built in the Operating system.

You can go to system setting and remap a cap locks to be control and live my life from the nineties with sun keyboards that had a control key over there. It's really nice. It's much more comfortable than rational control key. It's less important on maxis. One of things I love about max that I do not understand why people don't appreciate more.

I don't hear more people praising IT um for people who are into unix, uh mac uses a command and to lesser stand option for its uh keyboard check that copy is command c pace this command v the command is key, is right next to the space bar. It's great that leaves control essentially free for all the unique stuff. So all these people who are using windows and I go, how do I copy in my terminal mulatter without any control? sea? We don't have to worry about that.

It's such a clean separation, so beautiful. One of those things that you can't fix once it's broken, like in window, is like I have all these hacks about like setting your settings when you hit control see he knows what it's copy verses that knows when it's sending siggins is like it's just such a house that we just don't have to deal with and I love IT right but anyway, if you you do use control a lot, not having control weight down and want to those the scape e corners of the keyboard. It's nice staff at on CPO ks um that that I don't remember my keys uh I think part of has to do with me using up extended keyboard uh for a long time up extended keyboard um that cap locks key was the old style cap locks key that stuck down.

You go click and I would stick half like a pop up. You can't really map that to control. Physically speaking, it's not it's not going to work the way you want to do. So I guess I got into that habit for a while as well ah my answers to the question of things that I can look without maro, I one of them I think probably or managers, my number one, exactly the same thing.

And i've lost data that way like i've yeah copied something and then it's just like scroll away or close the tab or whatever, I copied something else and then I got to pace and realize, oh, that first thing I copy is gone forever. I can even use my classic mac rams new bathroom that I would run in panic they would scan through all of RAM to find a thing that I had previously happy that say my back sometimes memory protection makes that more difficult um that's probably my number one. Quick silver is probably close.

Number two are talking about that in past episodes is in a period of the stability right now. But I like I said before, spotlight is now good enough and fast enough that I can mostly get along without IT. I obviously all my stuff, all my crick server stuff isn't there, but using a just a launch stuff is reasonable.

My the apps that I make so I make, uh, switch class in front and center. Those two apps are there because they make the mac work the way I wanted to work. I want the window learning to work like a did in classic macos.

Or when you click one window belongs to another application. All the windows of the application come to the front that just the one that you click unless you modify, or click on IT, and then just the one that you click comes to the front. That's what I want when i'm on someone's mac.

That doesn't hat that first of all, chances are good if someone, someone else is back, everything is in full screen anyway and some tiny little old top and it's just made this right. Like if my son, the way my son uses a computer, because, like he didn't really use computers at all, he was just an ipad kid until he got his laptop for, like, high school and college. And because is a tiny laptop screen, he does everything full screen.

He uses a spaces. He three fingers wipes between them. That's how he uses a computer. He finds IT very efficient.

Every time I have to do something on his computer, I pull everything out of full screens so I can get any work done. See more than one window at the time. And he thinks it's madness.

And I think he's doing his madness. And I tried to tell him, this is fine when you're on a fourteen intial APP top. But someday, if you're lucky, you have a really big screen. And if you make all your apps full screen, apps full screen, it's inefficient.

but will see how I go someday. If you do all your homework and brush your teeth every day.

you'll have a big screen like me a month looking at the world, this tiny portal, because he went from an ipad to a P2P that was similar size to the ipad. Great means so and make sense. But yeah, front center and switch glass.

I literally wrote those apps, not because there we're going to make me tons of money, and they absolutely not, but because I want them to be on my computer. Because I previously, I was using drag thing for both those those functions dragged that, but stuff, more stuff as well. But James, stand, stop making drag thing.

So I had to replace IT. Uh, and it's not like I can't live without those things that are not really hacks because the front of thing some people don't even want unless you're real to macur, I still think it's useful. Uh, even if you just rung in a modern mode where IT by default, that will works the Normal way, having a modify click to pull the windows ford instead, I haven't go to the door is actually cool anyway.

Uh, that is an invisible thing. The runs in the background, I know that I can live with that I wouldn't want to live with that on my mac. Someone, someone else is I know.

On someone else, I can deal with that. And then switched glass is even more narrow. It's like why you have a list of running applications somewhere else on your screen.

That's what the dog is for. There is running applications. Why in the world would you do that? Well, I have always wanted them to be in the upper right.

I wish I didn't have to use the dock at all. I wish my APP could do everything that dog does. But apple does not provide A P.

S. For that, uh, especially for APP. That's going to be in the mac APP store. So after on the dock and switch class, but switch class, let me pick the other things are in uh just like kind of like the doctors, but in a more regimented way and switch class has to be change his position and appearance and to all sorts of like it's redundant. I get it's redundant, but it's old habits.

I hard and I wouldn't want to use my mac without those things, but when I got to someone else's computer, I know they're not going to be there. I understand how the computer works all the way. It's not as it's not a sort of like like marker with the escape key or like both of us with the copy in pace.

That's the type of thing where you you don't think about IT until you fall into the trap, till you ve hit the wrong key, till you've lost data because you've have in place. So that doesn't happen with those too. But I guess that's my answers. Is good our manager quicks over. And then the two apps that I wrote to make myself feel good on the mac.

I did finally set up my mac mini, so the news broke over the last few days. There's apparently this this big 3 ology security problem that had like some zero day that you like everyone that go go update your sinologist is really fast because there are some big year day thing。 And one other packages is or something.

Do you know anything about that case? Because when I saw that message, I want to look to my snooty that because I have my things that on updates .

and fine you i've only dug into this the tenise little, little bit. And if you are a owner of a snooze, please double check all of my mouth on this, because I might be steering iron by accident.

But with that heavy out a side, and disclaimer aside, my understanding is there were some sort of conference I couldn't tell you what specifically IT was, but there were some sort of conference that happened in the last week to where some of the attendees announced or perhaps discovered some zero day exploits. Um I think one of them was real bad with regard to snooty photos, which is not something I use. But there have been a couple others.

I think one was with snow logy drive, which I swear by. This is how I use dropbox without having dropbox natively installed on literally anything that I own. Um and then I think that the dsm, they are based Operating system, if you will, also have a vulnerability.

And I think as we were sitting down to record the D S M update might have been released. But the email that we all got was, hey, if I there's some bad stuff out there. We haven't fixed all of that yet.

And in fact, I think when that email was sink as I got IT as well, none of them were fixed. And that I believe shortly, like within hours of that email, my snooty drive software wanted to be updated. And allegedly, although I have not checked, there's, I think, a new dsm update waiting for me and presumably you if you wanted to grab IT immediately, my understanding is this is pretty bad, the security vulnerabilities. But the good news is, as far as we know, they haven't really been in the wild. But for a few days, and I think that they were patched you as quickly as can be reasonably expected.

So yes, my thing molt off day when I sleep, my this my synodical is not exposed to the internet time .

not to worry about anyways market, you started to say you setting up your beloved .

mac many basically over the last few years like when I when I moved to the beach we I had the old schnoor gy um at the old house, the old eighteen thirteen plus that was running forever.

买 had that you know hosting much stuff for me but I had mostly if you listeners from a long time recall um I had gotten into ice guzy for this purpose um because the problem I was trying to solve back then was I I had what was ending up being like a ten or twelve terabytes of archive storage。 I wanted backless to back that up. And the only way to do that without like you you you can do back that is b two story.

That's like their blocks storage. You just pay her gig that use and it's way cheaper than next three. Um so that is an option you can you can back up a lot of da to be to to back with b two for not that much money and was built an APP on the synod.

Gy, to do example that but what I wanted was and I I don't even know that option existed when I first started doing this but basically um instead you could if you had an ice guzy driver for the mac, you could treat the sino logy just as a giant ice gas I drive and have have a mac mini, some other mac hosting the ice guy driver for that and then book lays would see IT just as as a connected drive to the mac and back IT up with a regular backpack, an for unlimited space so that if if you had a lot of terrible today to back up, that was way cheaper per month and honestly, way Better than trying to use b two with some third party back of solution. So forever ago, I I had this old mac, many, this twenty fourteen bed model mac mini. I had IT since that was reasonably new.

So around twenty fourteen uh, for various utility functions here and there, I ran plex on IT and some stuff like that. Um and so I I use that to basically host my archive storage when I moved to the beach that I I didn't want to bring that whole big set up. Uh, and I wasn't sure how long I was going to be there.

And so I started some archives storage and some like local time machine server functionality. And so I got a tiny sanom gy, the four bay, uh the D S four J I think IT was something that s in j has four base. And IT was a pretty low end model.

That synergy has been incredibly unreliable. Um IT IT would just fall off the network. Sometimes you have to be revoted frequently for access that would just disappeared.

Ly IT was really unreliable, and I couldn't really figure out why. And honestly, it's not my job to figure out why. My job is to do other things that like making me money and stuff.

And the last thing I ve wanted to deal, what is, is this flicky few hundred dollars and ology like that. I I don't have time for that. So, uh, I decided i'm going to read.

I'm not living to be anymore. I had in my office an ancient psychology fulled of, like, four terrible hard drive, sitting, taking up half my closet. And then this four bay, ridiculous, like unreliable thing with some pretty good harder, you know, it's like these four, like sixteen 嗯, so pretty good stuff.

So I decided, you know what? Screw this. I'm getting out of the snooty business. And this is well timed with the security vulnerability.

But I decided if i'm only using this thing as a big dumb disk, i'm i'm not taking advantage of the other features of an entire mass with its own APP platform and packages and everything like i'm doing any that stuff. I'm just using that as a giant disc. I want to be backed up like I can do that with anything.

So that's why I ordered the most recent mac mini O I was going to order mac many months ago, but know we had heard they were being update. So I figured out away till the update. Um so now I have brand new mac, many that is almost the base model just with a ten to ethernet and the five twelve update because like I can't I can't buy two six. I just I can't let myself do IT, because I I i've done that and regretted that at every .

time I have done in the Operating system.

So you exactly so anyway now I have that and I have decommissioned um and actually recycled both sonos because nobody who has done for the record before .

anyone jumps on your back, uh you had very graciously offered to ship either or both to me and the eighteen thirteen IT is heavy that would have been very expensive to ship to even if you had taken out all the drives.

which I don't think been one hundred dollars to to give you a eleven year olds annotation gy that you don't need exactly.

That's not so you did offer, which is very kind of you and I just as much as I wanted to take you up on IT, I couldn't find a reason for either of them. I've already got a secondary snow logy deployed my parents for backup purposes. I don't need more than one in the house so um before anyone jumps on you, you did you pass the friend code, the friend test and you did to offer I just I couldn't bring myself .

to do IT didn't offer .

from to me you are in the same chat we didn't .

say anything I saying I was off.

I save you from them yes.

probably I already have the exactly that you just got rid of. So right? Exactly another. Actually I had known that you had sixteen terrible hard drives in one of them.

That's what I I kept I kept the hard .

drive weren't offered anybody because .

what I ordered instead was just a afford drive thurnall able disclosure from auto buse like one of the kind of mid range ones. Um and so now I have a disks that are directly plugged into the mac money through that enclosure. Um i'm using just software RAID one with two pairs know because Michael s has built in support for software RAID zero and RAID one.

If you wanted to fancy your music grade five, you had use third party stuff but built into the mac you have read zero red one. So I just I did two RAID one pairs for this bathing. Nice, easy.

And it's running and its backing up to back place. It's almost done already. It's it's doing great. It's serving files to my network. It's I haven't enable time machine survey. I got to go do that um but otherwise it's nice that and by the way for the record um i'm no longer using one of those old dummy HDMI singles that you have to pack them to its butt to make a boot before the new ones don't need that anymore.

Yeah I didn't know that but I I can't remember who was. But somebody said a recently that I believe any of the apple solution max, do not need them here again, check I may have them that i'm not a one hundred percent short.

but that is what I believed to be the case. Yeah well that was little unknown to me at first because the um I had the m one mac mini briefly serving a role like this at the beach and that one did. I had problems getting that one to boot headless but for some reason, I guess those were resolved since the m one era. So the the m four one boots just fine and doesn't need a keyboard or mouse there. Anything about in just boots up and it's nice and easy.

Maybe it's a software improvement, who knows? Speaking of mac minnes and booting an external storage, kind of meant to mention that we are uh, talking about the persons question about like how to deal with a mac mini doesn't have a lot of lot. I have external storage.

Should I boot from the external drive as a way to sort of solve the problem of the by vacation? First, we should have emphasized that, that is, if you want to do that and just forgo the internal drive entirely in boot from that, that solves a lot of the problems who were talking about what like apps don't want their stuff to be on the booths. You just make the extra on the road drive.

But second one ever size, that apple silicon max cannot boot from external drives in the way that you think they can. As if the internal hard drive dies, you can't boot from an external one which may not make any sensitive. Like what do you mean as the whole point i'm booting from the next right care of the international drive torn out IT should be fine.

But the way the security architecture works on all apple silk maxis, they essentially always boot from the internal drive. They just stop during the boot process once they've booted a substantial amount and they say, oh, you wanted to boot from that drive OK, i'll chuck you over there and IT does the stuff beside the scenes. A seure A B.

It's it's a security feature. Is not apple being mean from your perspective is just basically looks like all I can move from next one drive. But be aware that you are always relying on the internal storage functioning and having an Operating system on that works. So if your internal S D goes bad, you can no longer boot that mac that you thought you were called on code to booting from an external drive. So please keep that in mind.

Yeah anyway, that's my many story so far. It's just working just fine. Like IT is IT is I installed in my garage. And the most exterior wall possible, we go. So just mostly for john, started in the garage.

punched a hole in the roof to get the rain falls through onto IT.

But he has to keep IT off cool somehow.

Yeah so you do use like screen sharing to mess with that. If you have to use that.

yeah it's great.

I have to open right now when you do that, what what does IT do for the screen resolution considering .

there is nothing attached to um I believe it's ten eighty to give me a moment all report back.

I suppose you could go into and go to display setting ings and change that and I remember that not exit monitor should .

be for care uh yeah I think so right now it's ten eighty by default. But can I change IT?

no. And by the way, when you do screen share, you just type command space as C, R, E. And I just worked. But keep in mind, screen sharing APP is not in the application folder or the utility folder max, these days it's in I think it's in like system library, core services or whatever, which is annoying. But I think .

that's where IT is. No, usually I guess I go in a finder side bar, I go to the network location. IT says, like many right there, and I just click the share screen button .

from that and there is I actually IT isn't util sorry, I take that back and I think IT used to be in core services but now is in application ssh util slash reen sharing APP it's the same p launches this when you you do the thing the market to described or when you just do open your l whatever like the voice to do that but alright, so would you change dress?

What does he do? No, so turns that you can all hot actually had posted about this the other day as well that if you do plugged in one of those dummy, my adapters that enables more resolutions, I believe up to fork by default. IT does ten ntp one x that's IT. But if IT depends on what you're using this for, like, for my purposes of just administering a computer as as acting as a disk server or mostly that's totally fine.

That's GTA wear though, like they solve the problem, not in the don goals. Strange that they just in matusic. Whatever the resolution you want is not like if I think of breaking a sweat to just have a little bit larger hier resolution display, but whatever. However, you never even need to do screen sharing and just is there in your garage with water dropping onto IT, doing this job exactly, freezing cold in the winter, hot in the summer, your heat pump water, he there .

know whatever .

what's doing, I don't know what's go. It's semi outdoors that should be the name of your electronics channel, mark arment, semi outdoors and teaches you have to take things that aren't meant to be outdoors and kind of sort almost put them outdoors.

In all fairness, that thirteen year, twelve years of living old synodical Operated in a garage for its entire life, and IT was not only was the psychology perfectly fine and one hundred percent reliable, I didn't even lose a single .

hard drive that entire time. Mind is still running right now. It's the last last one, the original hard twenty thirteen, uh, more than ten year old technology, all the original drives that were put in there in twenty thirteen, every single in the mist spinning as we record this mine has been endorses this whole life.

So I guess marker, you provided an excEllent home for spiders and other bugs for over a decade. That was nice. Whatever, whatever mice are living inside there, whatever kingdom they're created for themselves. IT hasn't about synodical.

My I remind me, before we leave this topic behind, what what many did you get to think we covered this? But one more time .

a base model plus ten get ether net and five twelve.

So not a pro or or anything like that. The m four plane .

yeah I so I actually do intend to do some like overcast processing tests on this. So I I have some ideas on maybe how to do transcripts with the overcast and is .

the fastest single core CPU in your house.

Now IT is honestly I really is um and I and I not really near any upgrade cycles for my other max. Like my max right now are my m three max macbook pro and my m two math book air. And both of those are great and fine.

And I I don't think i'll be updating either one of them anytime very soon. I am i'm probably going to do every two years on the macbook pro. So that would be I do the five generation on in the mac air kind of as needed.

This is all savor, marco, saying the phrase of great cycle and applying IT to himself as just as if that's a thing, as if there is some kind of cycle that he had hears to for upgrades.

Well, for my main beef, or mac, I actually did. So I had the m one max macbook pro. I skip the m two generation. I got the m three.

You had first.

yes, but yes, when the pro came out, upgrades the pro and IT was great. And I got the m three. I skip the m two, got the m three.

Now skipping the m four, and I probably get the m five. I will see, but I will see in the magic air that's the portable one. That's the m two right now. I maybe like if the m four map cares come out and they have nano texture, that would be interesting because I frequently use IT on the train and IT is very bright in the winter train so that I actually like I I am tempted by ano texture, but not tempted not to replace the m two yet.

We attempted by the five hundred net macbook air screen.

I mean, yeah, that's not help. Six hundred now I forget, I don't know. But but the honestly, that pic air has been a pleasure to travel with like because that that m two map air is so first of all feels amazing. It's so nice for my like you know light travel uses and and by light I just mean weight like i'm what i'm doing on an apple care sometimes yeah it's just like you know email and face time but a lot time i'm doing over cast development on IT and it's fine like it's not nearly as fast as the map pro, but it's pretty good considering it's you know what two and a half pound allegedly low end model of computer like it's it's a fantastic computer.
