Welcome to and for back daily for wednesday, november six, twenty twenty four. I'm your host, chance Miller. We are sponsored this week by hard points ers.
Leading off today, we have more developments on apples continued battle in the european union over the digital markets act. Bloomberg reports that apple is set to face the first ever fine under the D. M, A in the E.
U. As soon as this month. This comes after the E, U. Initially issued its decision that apple was in breach of the D. M. A back in june, it's been reported that apple's fine could be as high as five percent of its average daily worldwide turnover, which is over a billion dollars.
The european union watchdogs are ready in the penalty after apple failed to allow APP developers to steer users towards cheaper deals and offers outside of the APP store. European union competition commissioner marketh vesture is set to leave her error later this month, but bloomberg says it's possible the fine could be assessed before then, so SHE would be involved in the process. The fine could also be accompanied by period penalty payments, which are levied on apple until IT complies with the law.
So there would be an lump s some, plus those periodic penalty payments. Apple unveiled its initial D M A compliance plans in january and has made a ton of changes and adjustments to those plans since then, most recently, I O S eighteen point two, which is currently in developer beta testing, made further changes to the default wsa settings and made more of apple stock apps deleted. The E U.
Commission also this week announced that IT is now formally assessing whether ipad O S, the underlying software for the ipad, is in compliance with the D M A. The D M A requires that ipad O S must allow the choice of a defauts web browser, allow alternative APP stores and support third party accessory ecosystems like headphones and stylus. Apple, meanwhile, has said multiple times that IT is confident its plans comply with the D.
M. A, and that will continue to constructively engage with the commission as the investigations continue. Next up today, I O S eighteen point two shows that apple is working on a new feature that could tell you exactly how long this will take for your iphone to charge. The new feature is not yet enable, but there is a new battery intelligence framework in I O S, A teen point two beta two that can calculate the estimated time to recharge the phone based on the amount of energy being received by the device. Users will have the option of receiving a notification with an estimate on how long it'll take their iphone to reach eighty percent charge again.
Although the feature was found in the code of the most recent IOS beta IT still disabled and appears unfinished, this suggest apple is still working on IT IT could come in a future beta of I O S A eighteen point two or another software update further down the line. It's worth noting to that Michael S R D has a similar feature for the macbook in the battery menu, so it's been a long time coming for apple to bring a similar feature to the iphone. And one of those efforts is the idea of smart glasses. Blue g reports that apple has been conducting an internal survey among its employees about building smart glasses.
According to the story, the initiative is known internally as atlas and started last week with apple employees giving feedback and thoughts on smart glass products. The group responsible for the initiative for an email to selected employees confirming the study on products in the segment, the email says, quote, testing and developing products that all can come to love is very important to what we do at apple. This is why we're looking for participants to join us in an upcoming user study with current market smart glasses.
In, quote, bloomberg details that apple often gathers seeker groups like this. When IT has plans to develop and launch a new product category, the company prefers to collect feedback from employees rather than customers in order to keep its plants as seeker as possible. This isn't the first time rumors have suggested that apple is considered creating smart glasses.
The news comes as meta sees quite a bit of success with its smart glasses built in partnership with ray ban. Ray ban meta glasses aren't nearly as advances as apple vision pro, and they don't even have displays in the lines, but users can listen to songs, answer calls, talk to an A I assistant and capture photos and videos with the glasses. Matter also unveiled its latest hyon project a few months ago, which is a pair of glasses that have micro L, D projectors inside the frames to show images in front of the eyes.
While meta has allowed members of the press to try a ryan, the company is not planning to release the product to the general public and says that the current version in development cost ten thousand dollars to build. Meanwhile, blue berk says that he will be years before apple has a smart glasses product ready to show to the world. And until then, apple reportedly is continuing its work on a cheaper version of vision pro and a second generation version with a faster chip that ups up another episode of nine five mac daily.
