Leading off today, apple has released its earnings report for the fiscal fourth quarter of twenty twenty four. The company reported ninety four point nine three billion dollars in revenue starting the three months period, up six percent year over year. This sets a new revenue record for the september quarter, but there is a ten billion dollar wrinkle to apple's earnings for the quarter.

Apple earnings this quarter included a one time income tax charge after his order to pay thirteen billion euro and back taxes to the irish government. That number equates to ten point two billion dollars. So with that factor in, apple reported a net income or profit of fourteen point seven four billion dollars for the quarter.

Apple reported ninety seven cents in earnings per share for q four twenty twenty four, but when excluding that one time charge, earnings per share beat analyst expectations at a dollar and sixty four since apple doesn't report unit sales for its products but instead reports a breakdown of revenue by product category. The iphone hit forty six point two billion dollars, up five and a half percent year over year. The mac at seven point seven four billion, up one point seven percent year over year.

The ipad had six point nine five billion, an increase of eight percent year over year. Wearables, home and accessories hit nine billion dollars, down three percent year over year, and services across twenty four point nine seven billion dollars, up twelve percent year over year. Apple fiscal fourth quarter began on june thirtieth and came to a close on september twenty eighth.

This means the earnings report covered the first two weeks of iphone sixteen availability as well as the first two weeks of the launch of new airports and apple watch series ten. So as usual, the fiscal q for can provide early look at the performance of these new devices, but the more important quarter for apple is fiscal q one, which covers the months of october, november and december and therefore, the busy holiday shopping season. In conjunction with apple le's earnings report, tim cook touted that apple is seeing strong adoption numbers of I O S eighteen point one so far.

Apple, of course, were released I O S eighteen point one with the first apple intelligence features on monday, and cook says that I O S eighteen point one is being installed twice as fast as I O S seventeen point one in the same quarter last year. Cook said, quote, we're getting great feedback from customers and developers already. A really early state, which is only three days worth of data, is that users are adopting I O S eighteen point one at twice the rate that they adopted I O S seventeen point one in the year ago quarter.

And quote, I was eighteen point one includes features like writing tools, notification summaries, clean up in the photos, APP. There are also non apple intelligence related features like changes to control singer, upgrades to iphone miring and support for call recording and transcription. Meanwhile, last year's release of I O S seventeen point one included some changes to airdrop standby mode and the music APP, along with a handful of bug fixes.

Regardless of what you think about how useful this comparison from tim cook is, IT dos mark our first look at I O S eighteen adoption so far. Apple, of course, has already started testing I O S eighteen point two with developers with features like image, playground, gin mogi and ChatGPT and aggravation. O S eighteen point two is set to be released to the general public in december.

Apple will commit an additional one point one billion dollars for upfront structure prepayments to global star to crease the capacity of satellite services. Additionally, apple is taking a twenty percent ownership stake of global star in an equity deal worth about four hundred million dollars. The news has sent global star stocks soaring, and that hinted apples growing plans for iphone satellite features, for example, with I O S eighteen, iphone users are now able to send text messages to friends and family over satellite one outside of cellular or wifi range.

Apple continues to commit significant financial resources to providing satellite features while also continuing to offer the feature for free and users. IT has repeatedly signalled that he intends to charge fees to iphone users for satellite negativity at some point, but specifics haven't yet been revealed. Satellite connection activity for emergency S O S first launched with the iphone fourteen in twenty twenty two.

At the time, apple said satellite would be free for two years. That means customers we've had to start paying right around now in late twenty twenty four. But apple ended up extending this free period until twenty twenty five.

So this means apple has until around september of twenty twenty five to come up with a plan for how a plans to charge for satellite connectivity or IT can continue to kick that can further down the road. In the meantime, it's always good to be aware of how these satellite connectivity features work. So if you need them in an emergency situation, you know how to use them.
