You work hard, play harder in a new chevy silverado.

So I had a thought on how we can make progress on the book.

No, great.

Well, I think what we need to do is cut into much smaller chunks to get done. So rather than saying what's come back in three weeks each having written you know fifty pages, I think we need to go just like seen by scene.

That's good. Yes, that's a good plan endorsed.

Hi, and welcome to happier and hollie wood, the podcast about how to be happier, healthier, saying, or more creative, more successful and more productive, get a back biting, superficial, chaotic, unpredictable, fundamentally insane world. I'm serafin a TV writer and producer living in, oh, right outside of L. A. And with me is my high school friend and writing partner is that's me.

liz craft. On this podcast we talk about being writers and hollywood, how we baLance a career and french, and how to survive the war of the rican, that is life and less Angeles.

Today we're going to talk about the annual hollywood holiday shut down. Then in hits and bombs, we each have a hit.

And Sarah will discuss novembers theme of meaning in the happiness project revisited. Plus, he has an environmentally friendly laundry. Ry, hack.

Finally, liz has a television recommendation, but first we have a couple updates.

yes. So Sarah or book club is coming up or doing a bonus episode book club in december. And the book is, we saw murders by Richard osmond. Yes, and we know that a lot of people .

are reading the book with there is already some discussion about IT on our facebook group of people who excited about IT. I'm loving this book now on my second read. So if you're interested in being involved in our book club, join our facebook group. We're going going to start posting questions for discussion in the next week, and then we'll have a bonus episode in december.

And for anyone who doesn't know, Richard osman is also the author of the thursday murder club series and this is his new series and it's a huge hit. yes. And then, sir, we also want to remind everybody to listen to our bonus gift guide episode that came out this week.

We are very excited about that. We do love our gift guides. I love reading gift guide. Sarah love listening to them. I love doing them.

So do I. And of course, we have links to all of the various gifts. And there are some of our very, very favorite, including our, of course, top is popcorn that will be on every list we ever make. Yes, alright, as it's time for from the tread mill desks of where we talk about what's most pressing in our workpapers es. And this week, IT is the holiday shutdown that happens about this time of year every year in hollywood.

but it's getting earlier and earlier, sera, that's what seems to be the most on my mind. Hollywood is always shut down right before thankful to giving. So if you're on a project, you'll still be working. But if you're trying to sell something, it's always like no point between thanksgiving .

and new yeah there is just this time where you know oh will just be taking a very extended pause. And of course, if you're working on something, the finny thing is for people who are writing pilots, at least in the sort of old schedule of things you were doing, a broadcast pilot IT would be the most intense time for writers. Yes, because you're just like no one cares about you having a holiday. It's more just like get this in by january third. But if you're not already doing that, you will not be doing anything until january.

And what's notable is that IT seems like the shut down on this year started the day after halloween. IT really did.

It's sort of you know like violence theory on the holidays is that november first is when the holiday season starts. October is all about halloween and the november first is basically Christmas for her. We just in our house skip thanksgiving entirely and we're just like right in the middle of OK decorated and by presence. And you know, we're like in IT. And that seems to be the attitude of the whole town right now.

yes. And you and I have a pitch that is almost ready to take out. We're doing some tweak. We're adding some more photos, but basically, we could be ready at any time with this. And IT seems like we're gonna likely take IT out until be getting a january.

yes. IT seems like we're gonna kind of finish IT be like woo and then put our feet up for the next couple of .

months and it's fruiting because it's a kind of thing. Where could we push our ves under some schedules? Probably if we said no, we must pitch. Now i'm sure we could get some meetings and get some pitches, but if it's not a good time to sell, you do not want to be trying to sell. You want to sell at the best possible moment.

And of course, it's that thing where you can't game the system anyway. For all we know, maybe next week is the best possible time to sell this particular project to a specific place, but we don't know that you can see all of the factors all at once. So here we are. We just wait because there is the other side .

of IT where you can say, well, if nobody y's trying to sell right now, because everybody waiting till january, maybe we should try to sell. And these are the circular conversations you and i'll probably have for like the next two weeks with various people and then overwhelm, odds are will wait until january. Now the good news though is that means we can have a much more restful holiday season. So there is an .

upside that is very good news, that is excEllent news, having had many, many holiday seasons where we did nothing but work and then take a break from work to be like, yeah, I am so happy to be here. Okay, bye. I'm going to go work. IT is nice to be able to enjoy that time with our family and friends.

absolutely. So that's the good thing. Hollywood shutting down in the holiday season.

IT definitely has a lot of benefits. So we're getting into IT be interesting. And of other industries have a similar utter slow down.

Let us know about your industry. Us at happier and hollywood gmail are come and tell us if you also are feeling like one. The holiday season is starting november first. And do you feel like work is very slow down basically from now until january, when i'd love to hear from .

people in industries where there is a slowdown, but not this particular season? I bet there are people who work in industries that are super slow in the summer or super slow in the spring. I'd love to hear about that. So let us know again, happy in hollywood at jamil doc.

All right, there are coming up. We're giving two hits. No bombs this week, just hits, but first to spring.

So liz, i'm sure you've noticed the days are shorter, but our to do lists are not power through your busy days with factors, no prep, no mass meals from breakfast to dinner. Factor has easy, nutritious options to keep you fuelled and feeling your best. I always have factor meals in my refrigerator unless I know your husband and adam is a huge fan of factor stake. I personally A A giant fan of their salmon. I always try to eat for brain health, and their salmon is unbelievably delicious A N it's cheaper than take out and dining out .

That's code H I H fifty and factor meals dot com slash H I H fifty to get fifty percent off your first box plus twenty percent off your next month while your subscription is active.

If you're spending time with loved ones for the holidays, chances are you're going to hear a lot of stories, the ones you love to hear and the ones you've heard too many times. But if you ever wanted to help your loved ones capture those timeless stories, not just for themselves, but for you, your entire family and future generations, IT can seem daunting to write an entire book of life memories, but story worth makes up fun and easy. Here's our works each week.

Story worth emails, your loved one, a thought provoking question that you get to help pick things like, what's the bravest thing you've ever done, which the farthest you've ever traveled, or how did you use to get to school every day? I love story where, sara, I given IT to many people that question, how did you use to get to school every day? I love finding out that my dad walked to school from the time he was about five years old. wow.

Help your family members share and capture their stories this holiday season with stories worth go to, story worth dotcoms lash hollywood today and save ten dollars on your first purchase that's S T O R Y W O R T H dot com flash hollywood to save ten dollars on your first purchase storage worth not come slash hollywood.

Okay, we're back with hits and bombs because hollywood all about big hits and big bombs, and we have two hits. Sera, you go first.

I am giving a hit this week to my little old shelter dog, jelly beans, canine ops pologies. It's a very specific. So i've had jelly been for like a year.

SHE has dry eye issues. I've been treating IT with multiple medications multiple times a day. It's just been a whole thing.

Finally, I took her to a specialist who gave her this medicine and IT works. It's like it's less difficult to give her. I have to give her the medicine fewer times a day and her eye is amazing. So the hit is to specialist who really hone in on specific and and know how to solve them. If you have as a human, if you have one of these things, it's worth looking into those people who are really experts and things, because IT makes such a difference, which, by the way, I want to add, is not a bomb to her regular vet who is amazing.

And that's a reason we really wanted you to give this hit this week is to remind people that doctors matter and there's something wrong going to. That next doctor can make a huge difference in your health. I know for me there, when I was diagnosed with type one diabetes, I think he was a third doctor I went to for a prom.

I was having that said, oh, well, let's just do of blood panel. And IT came back, but IT was sort of not clear what was going on. And so how I not kept going to different doctors, IT wouldn't been discovered in a timely manner. yes. So it's .

definitely worth doing that.

And i'm glad the jelly beans eyes are a little Better now.

Thank you. Me too or at least you have a hit yeah.

So Sarah, I am giving a hit to Patricia r. Cat, an actor who's part of the famous arctic family. And i'm specifically giving IT to her for her performance in the act on hou. The act is a drama series which is based on the story of gypsy rose blanchard, who went to jail for essentially convincing her boyfriend to kill her mother.

Her mother had months' by proxy syndrome and kept gypsy rose in a wheeled chair and medicated and with a shaped head and with a feeding to be all sorts of things for her whole life. And it's a fascinating story. But Patricia cat, who by the way, was nominated for various awards for this performance, is just so good playing the mother and IT made me just think about particia r cat. And I feel like she's really underrated in general.

I watched the T. V show medium, which he started in for many years. I think she's incredibly, incredibly talented.

You and what's really great about this particular role is this mother is not someone you root for by any stretch. But Patricia kt, gather a humanity. What you still are investing in her is a human being.

And I think that is a tough line to play. And SHE does that beautifully. So I really do recommend this show, the act. I must say it's very hard to watch. Sometimes i'd have to stop IT and then go back to you later because its very hard to watch, but it's excEllent.

Also, I wanted to, as an aside mention, to watch Patricia r cat in the movie boyhood, which he starts, and with eat and hawk, which was filmed over was at twenty years, twenty five years. So you kind of experience them aging and she's fantastic in that as well. So just to be old shadow to patch r cat, the amazing, brilliant Patricia r cat. All right there. Let's move on to the happiness project revisited.

Yes, we've been doing updates as I go through gretchen rubin course, the happiness project we visited this year. I think it's for the fifteen th anniversary of the original happiness project book. She's doing this course that I have been just absolutely loving. And we talked about IT in october, which was mindful investment month unless we both decided we were gone to move every single day of october.

yes. And you know what? I think maybe I missed about three days, but overall, i'd say that was a success.

absolutely. I think I missed about biked for being sick because that happened to be a month where I just kept getting sick. But every day that I was, well, I did move IT was all about investing in your future self, which obviously getting into more healthy habits is a huge part of that.

And what I also really enjoyed about the month, as you know, SHE sends these texts for a week of ways you can do something to accomplish the theme of the month. Who was all about mindfully investing. And I was so gratifying because a lot of them were things that I already do.

So IT gave me kind of a little pat on the back of, like OK. I I am mindfully investing in myself. I am thoughts about these things and encouraged .

me to do more. Nice, good for you.

I'll give you a hit too. Yeah.

okay. Well, let's move on to talk about november. So the theme of november is meaning this .

is something I think that flows so beautifully from mindful investment and is something that I had been thinking about a lot because i've been thinking about how I want to spend my time, and I was spending a tremendous amount of time on election stuff that's obviously over. And I have this whole kind of gap of time in my day. And I also was planning to, after the election, kind of take a bit of a break from my social media. And now i'm going to take a really big break, probably for several years. So so I really have a lot of time opening up, and i'm trying to think about how I want to use that time in the most meaningful way.

So what are you thinking? Have you devised to plan? What are you gonna do?

Well, i'm still in the process, but one of the things i'm starting with is a lot of reading of books by women who I admire. Part of the theme of the month is imitating a spiritual master. So i'm gonna imitating some of my spiritual masters on one of him as gretchen rubin.

So I will be reading the five senses book. And then my thing, I think, is gonna acting locally, taking my sort of activism and committing my time to causes in a very local way, whether that environmental action, volunteering, working on reducing food waste, which is a big thing i've been working on for the last year. So, and just continuing those things, and also just trying to be outside more, and meditating and hiking, and just appreciating where I am.

What I love about the idea and tearing locally is that IT will help build community. I mean, you're in a new place is still relatively new. You've been there a few years, but that will build roots. And I think one of the most meaningful things in life is feeling that sense of roots and community. And I have to say, even after all the time i've been in that I still don't feel the community and routes that I do in kansas city isn't .

that interesting. I think so much of that comes from, obviously, it's time. It's just this is where you became who you were. So you feel that sense of connection and it's harder to do that once you are an adult IT just is. So yes, that is definitely part of my hope to feel more community.

And I love that meaning comes in november sort of as the years closing out and then say, what are we looking forward to in december?

In december, I will be evaluating kind of the whole year and seeing what has been the most successful for me and deciding how I wants to Carry those things forward into the next year. And I have to say i'm really excited because actually has another course coming up on building habits. So that's gonna launch me into twenty, twenty five.

No good. Well, we will definitely next month do a segment where you revisit all in this because I wanted hear kind of how IT went. Overall, IT seems very well to me. I think you've had a great year of working on that. Your happiness.

I agree. It's spent a very, very positive, positive year of focusing on things that are are important coming up.

Speaking of environmental action, you have an environmentally friendly hollywood hack.

but first to spring.

Okay, here we are back with a week's hollywood hack. And this, as I said, is good for the environment.

yes. So i'm super excited about this hack because i've been using IT for a while now. It's the ego routes, zero waste laundry detergent sheet.

Going to say that again because it's a mouth ego roots, zero waste laundry detergents ets, because so much, you know, we get all about microplate tics getting into the water, so many not great things, and also just creating less waste. These come in a box that is recyclables and they're just laundry sheet. You rip them in half.

You only need a half of one for an entire load of laundry. They're so easy to use, hardly any waste at all. And they're really, really nice.

They smell good. You want to measure, you don't. There's no mess.

There's no liquid dripping on things. They are absolutely wonderful. And you can use them in hot and cold water, great. And all washing machines, two sums up from me.

So it's kind of what I take IT to be is like a drier sheet only. It's soap. Yes, exactly. It's smaller.

IT seems like, oh, there's a way this is going to wash a of laundry. You know it's but IT totally does. But yes, definitely similar.

I do know that we all use way more soap than we need to in the washing machine. I think you know there's that line on the cap that makes you feel like you have to use this whole big capable, but you really don't at any way this will make IT even easier to use less and reduce all that plastic. So want to order this? excEllent.

And then this you have a documentary recommendation that I have not watched yet. But just to hearing you talk about IT has made me .

very excited about IT. Yes, Sarah, this week I want to recommend a documentary on netflix called Martha. So IT is about Martha Stuart.

And mother start is just a fascinating human being. He is the queen of entertaining. She's also recently known for being very good friends with stoop dog.

SHE went to jail for something related to insider trading. I think ultimately, he went to jail for lying to federal investigators. And he is just someone who always rises.

SHE has a very specific personality for which he is known. She's also beautiful. She's absolutely fascinating and love this documentary.

One quote SHE had in IT there, which he said he had heard somewhere SHE dollar, take credit for IT. But I thought I was fascinated and kind of tells you a lot about her. He said, if you want to be happy for a year, get married.

If you want to be happy for ten years, get a dog. If you want to be happy for a lifetime, plan to garden. And SHE is very into her garden. So I got a big kick out of that. I love that.

Of course, I agree with her on the dogs. Everyone should always have dogs all the time. And maybe that will give me some inspiration for a twenty twenty five finding even more happiness than twenty twenty five blades in your garden that I don't have yet, but will someday.

And the mothers story documentary is so absorbing sarif you're looking just for an escape. It's absolutely vcs ating and just kind of takes you away.
