Breakups are hard enough already, losing a person you love is one of the most painful human experiences. There’s a lot grief to be fat and managed, but one of the unspoken difficulties of a breakup has nothing to do with losing your partner: it’s losing their family, too. We get close with our partner’s parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, and even children and when you lose that person you lose everything that comes with them. Sometimes those relationships can be maintained, and sometimes they can’t. Either way, things will unfold the way they do, and it’s up to us to trust the experience as it happens.
