Hello, welcome to episode three or five of late nike linux, recorded on the twenty first october twenty twenty four ever. Great.

hello and well, good luck voice to be .

trolling fairly monetary .

mister gate.

let's get straight on without discoveries, then fight him task find a so this is pretty .

much like my fear of the early predictions that we have where it's a fucking in bali because I feel like i've never done my homework on time locally. This was sent to me by Chris Warner from mam, and he said, you look like you might be interest this or maybe i've already heard of IT and I hadn't. So I did check IT out and IT is a nice to e.

Is that the word for that? Maybe I guess IT is to face for a tax system with priorities and soft like that, where you can put simple text files as long as they contained the word to do in them. And then you have a square bracket with with a blank space in between for marking a to do item as done or not done with an accent.

You can have a also a scheduling system built to say when a task is ready to go. And you can have a just a big pile of text files for different projects, our clients or whatever, in a simple folder and room task finder to go through them. And IT ruins on linux, mac and windows as well as got binders for all and you get source go to and is a really simple, but really nice way of doing to do items.

Can you imagine film how much time you'd d have back if you'd never investigate IT? All of these different to do .

list are not taking you. You think that I put a lot of effort of them. It's more like I got to now spend ten minutes try to find the thing and then forget about, uh, but this one is pretty enough that I might actually keep going with a have you got a list of to do lists?

Maybe maybe I even have them distributed in a distributed list of denial across all of my machines in various stages. And next, cloud. The beauty of this one is because as simple tex for as so I got to stick up on a folder index load and do nothing more than just right to as a standard file, and then IT gets up bloated, and then I can get IT on my other machines. Nice and easy.

Well thing.

I think the official pronouncing ation is thin, geno. And let me tell you a story that is as old as time itself. A few years ago, a company called nios were selling smart cameras that you would put up in your home, and then you also installed an up on your phone, and there was a geo fence set up around your house.

And when you or phone went outside that g offense IT would ARM the system, and the cameras would watch for video or listen for sound and went something, trigger them, you would get a push notification to your phone, and there would be a luck, I don't know, a one minute video of whatever IT was that was going on. Now, these cameras were based on wise cameras, which are maybe three or four ignes square, ten A T video quality, perfectly capable I P connected camera, though, selling them for about twenty five quid, something like that, so pretty cheat. They cannot be making a lot of money on the, but then they would have a premium up sell, which was that you could pay I I think I was about eight qua month and you could record longer videos and they would keep your videos for a longer period d of time or something like that anyway.

But obviously, I didn't do very well because this week we had an email from nios to say, well, we shottery, the service is closing down. You've got until the middle november and you now have some e waste. congratulations.

So this is a bit of a shame really, that the free service they were offering was good enough, I think that that ultimately to the problem here. And so this must have been costing them a huge amount of money in s three bills. And maybe they had a kind of sort of plan to work out what to do with the data.

Maybe they could monodist IT, I don't know, but I didn't work out. And so they are closing the service. In the e mail that they sent out, they suggested that you could put an sd card into the camera and then IT could record locally to the sd card.

And so your your E A was not e ways at all. IT was still a useful service of all device. I I think recording video to an S D card in its looping manner, which is just onna overwrite and round and round, round again is a short fire way to kill an S D card in a probably a couple of weeks.

So that wasn't a very, a very good idea. The alternative they came up with IT was you could recycle and that they would begrudging send you an envelope for free, and you could return IT to any waste recycling process. But, you know, we're like, we don't like doing things like that.

So I went looking for some alternative firm, and there is an an old one. It's been around for a long time called the fan, and getting that on the camera was quite involved in the boot of a sd card, and then keep the sd card in there. And as soon as you ejected the S.

D. Card, the whole thing kind of ground to a hot. But IT was okay, wasn't really use friendly.

IT was acceptable. But this weekend, I thought, now is the right time to go looking for a proper alternative. And that is how I found thin geno. I found IT via a youtube video from one of the developers of thin geno, explaining how to install in geno onto the exact camera I had.

And the process is you download a binary, you write IT to an sd card, you put IT in the camera, you hold on a button, you turn IT on, you wait about five minutes, and you take the S D card out and you're done and then think, you know, is installed on the ice out of the box. You gets a web interface, you get S, S A taxes, you get an R T S P stream. You're rather, you get two or T S P streams, and you can configure them independently so you can have a ten, eighty stream and also a much lower rest stream.

And I talk about why that's important. In a minute, you get M Q T tailors, you get an N, F S support, you get recording to S D card if you want to, you get F, T, P, S, C, P, telegram, web hooks, email. So when this thing detects motion, IT will send you a, whatever you can figure thirty second video from the device.

And so you can replace this closed neil service, which hosts your recordings on s three with their completely open source and private alternative, is very easy to install. They've got a really active disco channel that theves a super responsive and really helpful. And over the weekend, I was SAT in the disco channel and probably like ten, fifteen people dropped in saying, oh, i've got a nail camera and i'd like to run your software.

Can you help me? And they helped teach them, pointed to the right direction, got the software installed, and they were all up and running. So yeah, if you've got one of these nails cameras, or you've got a wise camp too, and you have got anymore for nails about shutting down the service, then go and check out thin.

Geno is really to get IT installed and is a great service. Now building on top of all of this is another find that i'll save for another time, but I think it's it's quite possible to build a full network video recorder running on a rusby pie that does motion detection on a camera that costs not very much money. If you're interested in building a home camera system and you don't want to spend much money, amazon at the moment have got a camera to sin ado C I N N A D O D one and it's thirteen quit and it's a ten eighty camera with night vision, with I R night vision and pat's ed controls for for third inquit. And it's really easy to put thingy o on IT. So they you if you want to set up some cameras, or you've got some cameras that are otherwise useless, check out in geno to great service, great system, and you can record what's gone on in your house.

So that camera that you've just recommended, can you power IT with pay?

No, it's A U, S, B, C connection on the back.

right? That's not much good for outside then.

and it's not weather proof either. So I wouldn't like to.

right? So this is internal stuff.

okay, yeah, this is inside. May be.

I like run scripts.

I would like to talk to you about motion, the open source motion project, but i'll save that for next time because this is going long enough. But I think you'll able to build something which meets all of your needs for a pretty low overhead and IT will perhaps be a bit Better. Lies.

I love the idea of this world, but is IT worth trying to find a camera now that is no longer supported, or should I just look for something else?

I don't think you can even buy these these wise campus or naos cameras anymore. I think they've stopped selling them. You can probably get them on ebay.

But well, in fact, I know you can because I looked, but they are going for silly money like twenty something. quit. If you want to set something up, get this sinai d one is a current camera you can buy on amazon IT. It'll be delivered right away. It's just over a tena, and it's perfectly using, really easy to flash.

Okay, thanks.

okay. This episode is sponsored by tail scale. Go to tail scale dot com slash L N L. Tail scale is the easiest way to connect devices and services to each other wherever they are. Everyone these days has a VPN as a sponsor, but tail scale isn't like those.

This isn't about hiding your browsing habits from coffee shop owners and its not about watching netflix in another country. Tail scale is a proper V P, N. For connecting your device is security is great for companies and it's great for self host ers.

Tail scale is incredibly easy to set up. I got up running on two machines in just a few minutes without opening any ports. Then I could associate from one machine to another as if they are on the same land, even though they were on different sides of london.

Tail scale is why hard on easy mode, and that's why lows of the late night than its family hosts use IT tail scale personal plan will always be free, so we support the show and try tail scale out for free. right? Well, framework sent me a thirteen inch D I Y edition A M D laptop for nothing and said I could keep. So I talked about this on linux after to dark episodes ty, which are linked to in the show notes. But I thought I I sent me free P2P should probably talk about IT here as well. So A M A, suppose what you want to know .

about IT jme jme pastor is what you are.

Yeah, that is a very much her.

How clunky is that? That does? Does ever think fit together. Does IT feel like it's been made by the correct people, or has IT been coupled together?

Well, as I said on looks after dark, IT feels like a decent laptop with decent build quality, but it's not super premium like an X, P. S.

Well, I have one of those super premium X P S, which has a light soft touch sort of Robert field to a, which is now slowly corroding. And I wish I could just get the .

top part replaced. I mean, a modern express.

Why not your fucking it's not fifteen years. Eleven, apparently, I think, or ten is still gone. Strong change battery.

they build quality is decent, I would say not like top notch, but not shit by any means.

I heard you say as an american keyboard, that's a deal breaker.

That is true, but I could pay one hundred and nine quitting yet. U. K. Keyboard and swap IT out about two minutes.

I would pay twice as much to have that, because I would, I would have broken that laptop by flying .

IT so far through a brick wall. I don't mind the little enter.

I do hit the right well.

Why don't you pay me one thousand nine hundred and nine quid so that I can have a laptop that you really.

really want? I will consider this. Have you done anything with the integrated graphics? How actual useful is the graphics in a could you can't play games? I imagine you .

can play games. Is the same G, P, U, or you know, what have you call the A P, U, as in some of the hand tails coming out now, the steam deck, one base or competence, you're not going to be playing trip, play games at four. Kay, no.

it's a laptop. You shouldn't do that anyway.

No, but IT is capable of is the most capable graphics card I own.

But that way that's not really saying much. But yes, okay. Game council said.

that's cool. yeah. Have you tried taking apart and putting them .

back together again? Well, IT came in this. So yeah, I think if not fully taken apart, because they dare.

Why addition isn't like completely in bits? But I did change the S S. D. In IT because they sent me five hundred gig about one.

And then after the top cake pair as like, well, I suppose i'm going to put in a bigger one. So I put in a terrible at, and IT was just really easy. What I love about IT is the captive score. So you unscrew from the bottom and then the keyboard comes off. But where you don't have to find a place to put all the screws because they're captive.

brilliant. Do you mean find what screws go back in the empty hole afterwards? So how is the touch panel that think? Because it's it's a fairly massive phone.

Does that mean IT? IT doesn't any buttons? Or is IT one of those kind of touched the pod itself?

You can't crick IT down, but IT doesn't have specific buttons as IT were. I mean, no laptop in the last ten years as a well.

money doesn't even have button, are rankly. But I just have two eyes to the bottom part of the touch pad area, which make a positive click sound.

yeah. And you can do that left and right, and you do get let and .

right like from that. okay? My think that has got physical click y mousse.

I got a different nipple on IT too. Doesn't not exactly for in terrible for an idea. Don't let me I heard you say the speakers were pretty good on that thing as well. I listen to that show.

They are the best speakers i've ever heard in a non apple laptop.

You haven't heard any horrible winning sort of capture home. I note a lot of laptop stood at which is awful coral wine.

they call that. I don't think i've heard any that, but then I do tend to have head funds on most of the time. So right, don't know.

And what process was in the one that you got was at seven or five.

The top back .

is Christ. You know, I I could try at that two frameworks now just just saying j fox sake, if they send you an american .

cables so you just can complain .

about IT for a long time, but would change IT day you .

have in amErica about of my free laptop fucking them.

right?

But the other thing is, the aspect russia was really weird is three by two that is really tall. It's more detect developers and productivity rather than media consumption. That is ridiculous. Ly high resolution, which excel doesn't like, but good I am is absolutely ine with and I deliberately have not tried plasma just to spite you fail. See I see now i'm going to at some point.

but i'm sure it'll be fine, a bleeding retool both even that I see two here there's, I don't know, wish when you have there's a three boy, two and it's twenty two, fifty six by fifteen or four or twenty eight, eighty by one thousand, nine and twenty. That's a really .

wear display yeah I think yeah.

Something to be see in that detail.

I realize that my eyes are terrible. If they had seen screen shots from my phone, they realized that they properly wasted on me. So could tell me just seven, twenty out a bit. I, yes.

really shy. Black life, you have any idea?

Talk about that on the self to dark. So my test that I do with these laptops is full screen youtube, full brightness. And with sub unto IT, got a hundred ninety two minutes or something like that, one hundred and ninety six minutes with a bunch gomin willand. I got over hand .

a quarter longer than hard, if you do in an office or not, surely, probably quite long.

Then, 喂喂喂, say that again. Yes.

that three, a bit hours with X, F, C, and about four and a half hours with good omen island.

what? why?

violent? Wow, right? sure.

okay. But bye. X, F, C.

yeah. It's really, it's really making me think that, yes, I don't have that specifically. Just video play back. I need to do a lot more with different up tops is something that I intend to do, but i've been really busy going away and stuff s so that's on my agendas. Figuring out the actual power differences between .

the different desktops. And I assume that it's quite easy to go .

to replace some battery for that even if you I looked into, I think it's just a case of a few years and disconnected know the whole aso is not glowing SHE in and sodom SHE in where they possibly can.

It's great at to I will be very keening against something like that because I mean, i've lasted quite a long time, my experience and it's still fine, but eventually IT will break and I don't know I just I don't want to pay the sort of continual galloped to change things every two years. Just no interesting at all yeah .

hence your eleven year old experience that's getting sticky.

Maybe it's fine once I sand the top of every time I open IT.

I think the mistake made there is cleaning IT probably because i've got an old X P. S. And I cleaned IT with disinfectant because IT was second hand. Who knows what's being gone up with there?

And near that went sticky yeah, IT looks like the dogs had a tr, but IT is literally just degrading and chipping out but yeah.

overall, I mean, like a sudden next after dark, what maga say, shit that gave me free fucking up top. Keep that in mind, but it's a decent laptop. I talk to accent t with me and IT was, you know, I forgot to take my ability to speaker with me.

And as people may know, I said with a White noise machine, which is just a script that play and then whatever. And I realized, like, I got there on the finally I got really drunk, went back the hotel, when was like a shit. I didn't bring the fucking blue to speaker.

So what I did was fired up the framework, got the scrip running and cracked that to the max, and then did IT on in ten Marks on my phone as well. And that was my White noise machine for the weekend. I couldn't done that with an expres because the speakers are just too thin. There's no base whatsoever with a similarly size express. So I actually did save the day or the night, indeed, fAiling how project and how graphics cards work.

yes. So tangent tly related. I don't know how how projectiles are doing their work, but what they are doing is they are taking the remastered versions of two thousand and one space policy, and they are improving all the little computer bits in between. So they have taken as best as they could republic as of what's on the screens in the film.

They've taken as many of the digits, and characters that they could get out of IT sometimes haven't to resort to notes from the director, and they have recreated them in beautiful 4k and actually have some screen savers, which is a video which you can download and run on your machine. I don't know there's a Better form up that theyve got off the screen saver, but I guess you could always run A A video on the background, but they look amazing the way they done them. There's even some bits were apparently people who say that you can see the scratches in some of the high definition shots that were used for the blue ray of the film where they assent to use, I think, a sheet of prospects with something floating around in the room.

I was actually a sheet you couldn't see in the old diversions, but with some of the higher death, if you can actually see little tiny cratchits moving across the screen at the time. But this project is really just a sort of, I work a love, but I don't know what to team or a single guy. There's some voice covers of talking, how you did certain various things they want to do, walk, truth of what to do with all the very shots and IT looks really.

really cool. Please tell me you used the aid for this just .

to pass you off. No, he didn't. You still believe or listen to him, but relate to that. Also in the graphic side of things was autographic guards work.

And at a education video that was used blender to do all the renderings of all the cards and processor units, how they broke down and how they work. And I mean, I don't really know how gp is work these days. It's as far concerned that's just outside our council, therefore irrelevant.

But this is done all with blender, and it's a really nicely done educational video. I watched about half of IT or so, and it's quite interested to see how they did at all. And that looks really, really cool.

You're gonna love the last part of a bitcoin mining intensity of cause.

Yes, I particularly didn't get up strong. I might just leave that off the .

end of hm, okay. This episode is sponsored by antro wear go to antro war dot com intro wear sales computers with a bunch and a bunch martire install. I haven't tried this yet, but since discovering IT last week, it's something I have to three d print. It's a modular set of completely open source about C C N, C N S A storage boxes and base platforms and magnetic holders for ideally I think I think would be perfect for like circuit components, resisters capacity.

Although I i've got hundreds, maybe thousands of them all in those different bags that I have to sort through to try and find and ever i'm doing anything like this. I really need a way of organizing them. And gravitation is they say it's like multiples of forty two by forty two by seven millimeters is the kind of general aspect or shape of these boxes.

And there's dozens of them, dozens of them. The world completely open source. And so you can 3 print what you need, whether it's draws or whether it's little boxes or whether it's a can holder, they even make, and they all fit together in this module, way way you can print exactly what you need.

And everything will fit with everything else within the same system. And IT really looks wonderful. And IT looks like the perfect use of a three d printer if you've got one hanging around.

I really like this project from a like an ethos point of view that there's nothing propriety or special about the fact that you can put a container, but the fact that people have come together to agree on a format that means that you can design a particular niche container for something and then share IT with other people and know that I will integrate with the rest of this system. There's something very pleasing about that appeals to the kind of, I guess, the engineer in me that that likes things to fit together nicely like that. Have you ever heard about the modular shed?

No, haven't.

No similar idea is like an open source plan of a shed which is entirely modular. And so you start off with with like one unit. And then as you your storage needs h expand, you can add all modules and pay of designed ones for certain purposes. So I think what you should do is build a modular share and in IT, keep all of your modular gravity storage boxes. Okay.

i'm gonna IT and put the 3d printer in there so that you can make its own storage boxes。

Speaking of thirty printers, I repair my very expensive office chair for the sake of a tiny nyon parse that you can buy as a standard person. I think it's something that only the official repair channels get. And I found a three model online by some hero that I sent to a local shop near me that, in fairness, I was sent them one as I need one of these.

And I went, we have a fifty year old million spender. O. I said, I don't I don't really need fifteen and I tell you what, we can do a couple if you want for half Prices yeah for so I got my very expensive chair fix for the sake of a tiny island part, and it's just ridiculous. I need a three print now.

Let's need some feedback then. ben. Rights, microsoft s decision to discontinue windows ten in october twenty twenty five will push millions of functionally devices into obsolescence, unnecessarily generating e waste.

Many users will be unable to upgrade to windows eleven due to the limits of their machine. As linux advocates, we know what should be done. Most pcs begin life as a windows machine. Is this the opening we've been waiting for?

Is an tomato message?

Yes, pen. We are definitely gonna the year of learning on the desktop because that all these millions of pcs onna suddenly be upgraded to linux .

t minus twelve once windows release S A is just activated again.

I think the positive spell on this is, yes, there are some machines that will end up right in the next pot. The sad reality is that almost all of them won't go to e waste. They'll just keep getting used. People just will ignore the updates that they're not getting rather than the updates that they are going. It's not really onna be any different is that people will just use windows ten for another few years until the machine dies.

I hope Young people don't us into this show because I feel like they should feel empowered and they should go out there and they should convert. Those windows shines to the machines, listen to us. And this is the opportunity. Sees IT install firefox and you blow origin on IT. And yes, this will be the linux on this top.

Go for IT. Well, you look at a machine like my thinkpad x two seventy seventh chen, until I five sixteen S M. Absolutely great machine for your standard data date tasks in linux, but that hopefully will be even cheaper this time next year once windows ten is absolute.

That's what I was hoping and was hoping I could grow my collection of classic thinkpad s and my linux s on them. But I just don't think that people are going to actually do that. Get rid of them or upgrade or whenever they're gonna keep easing their own machine as long IT works, they are dare of security updates is just it's not a concept that most people think about like it's like file systems.

Yeah, I agree with the you. I think that's exactly what's gonna en. I've got a windows ten machine for gaming, and i've set IT up in such a way that IT doesn't frustrate me as much as I used to.

The kids have got windows ten machines. When I go and try and fix their computer is so difficult to use windows ten. The idea of the start menu, be searching files on your computer rather than searching for random stuff on the web.

They just accept this. My point is, windows ten is such a disaster as far as basic usability goes. If they are indoctrinated into using windows ten, despite all of its massive fAilings, they're just gonna keep on trucking.

They won't want to learn something new. They're not interested in doing updates. They'll just keep going and windows will nag them Marks of neg and five pop ups and they'll be OK to ignore and then give you another year or two. They'll stop being nagged and they'll just keep going until IT breaks and then they are threat away by new one.

I do think the Price of used hardware that isn't capable of windows that will drop a little bit, but not as much as I had initially thought I would. So I think IT would be a great time to buy. I can all think pad and ronny ics on IT, but that's pretty much I don't think it's this huge opportunity. Unfortunately.

the only thing is I got hold of some old gear that I thought should have been able to run win as eleven fort replacing limbs old machine turned out didn't have a tpm on board. And was the slightly one note below the processor level that they wanted, apparently is a way to get the processor level on the t pm over. But I bought A T pm for twenty year o on amazon but then didn't read the bit work, said the processor also, as is what I discovered that like it's like literally like a eighty seven hundred covers S A eighty eight hundred caves, some stupid like that. It's like the one tiny instruction set that IT doesn't have, well.

be a seventy one rather than eight, a seventy seven hundred rather than eight, eight, eight hundred or something.

something like that. I don't know, I don't know until processors, I was tricked by their inside bits.

Well, if you are deterred enough, you can use roofers .

to hack IT on there. But it's a terrible idea. I'll do. I do. IT should be in kd.

a on like your old man.

You should, yes, yes.

you should. Then you can inflict that on him instead .

of a hacked windows. Ironically did first. But because of some the .

games when right? Well, we're going to get out of here then will be back next week, will not probably be using stuff, but love to see until then.
