man 1。 Well, for da, forty one has arrived and it's right on time. And like every cycle, there's always something new in here to talk about.

They're always moving things forward a little bit at the top of the list for the standard workstation, spin obviously is good known forty seven right out of the box. That's what you're going to notice. There's visual refreshes throughout the one got the accent colors in there and the new dialogue winders in there. I guess, enhance support for small .

screens to that could be .

nice and I could be the only forty seven experience is top notch. And we kind of talk about that in the bin to twenty four ten review as well. And the west, did you say you've also got some new terminal love?

Yeah I don't know you say that exactly. Maybe protection is, but does a container, I guess, container savy terminal that that plays especially nicely with things like this, your box or two box we .

have talked about this I think is a pic once before .

on the show yeah and it's also has been a news over in you blue land.

Yes, that's the thing the episode we talked about IT. Um so this is this is a container savi container first terminal. So essentially, I think in plane language, that just means each tab could be its own contained environment.

IT is kind of, I wonder how long this last with. You know, we had we've already had some terminal change over genome ecosystem. But from what we've played with, I like IT as a terminal IT is nice. It's probably got more features .

in the new genome terminal that we just switched to recently. IT is strange that were photogen doesn't usually deviate two from upstream like this.

I think there is some other current of just overall you blue influence in this release. And I wonder this might be .

one of those willand is the default everywhere now.

And so I don't want to think eleven gets installing them. sure. X woman does.

And I give you install acts if you or you .

need to upgrade from forty. And I think if you upgrade from forty to forty one kex, which what I did but I never had actually just two ways i'll get to that later um I know what I jumped at, probably DNF five.

right? Yeah that is a big one. yeah.

And I think to me, IT does feel a little faster. I do think some of the output looks a little bit Better. They say, IT, streamlines you is Operation. And I mean, DNF has never been particularly slow for me, but I IT is nice to see them continue chip away. And I know people that use the door very regulate, very exact to see dinner five land yeah .

I think it's um you know it's been in the works for a long time yeah it's kind of like a peace that even if you're not necessarily excited about what's the shiny outside of the box feature for the end of five, I think that lays plume for a lot of stuff to come in future improvement that will see only forty two, forty three attack.

Yes, sort the kind of the same thing with the buttons. Container stuff, you know, for the forty one lays the groundwork for some bootiful containers. Yes, a bootiful container. And dinner five plays a role in that as well, but it's not really fully there yet, right?

Forty two is kind of when you're going to see all of that supposedly land same without the installation and icon a is still the installer for the door forty one. And I believe forty two is the target now for the new installer. And so I honestly was a little nostalgic because I installed for a forty one in a vm, because I also did.

I did my vm install again, and I also did. I have created a system, get into that. And like, this might be the last time I really use in a conduct.

And so I kind of enjoyed IT because it's had a really good spot, especially if you're just kind of go with all the defauts and you know where to look done and all those things, you know because some of the button are in different places that you might expect. And when you're used to all of that, it's it's been a really great installation. And I I hope I imagine that when I install to forty two, i'll be using something entirely new. Well, I think there's .

some exciting stuff happening with the spins this time around. We have a new miracle spin, which i'll get into a little bit later, but that spin is running the miracle window of manager, which gets its day you this time around, I heard friend of the show, neil had something to do with that one. I'm sure we'll hear all about at some point that said, kd plasma spin fetinia I gets the six dot two of plasma which I think is nice and modern yeah .

six two is great.

It's a great plasma. Um I also just thought that I tried to touch on that later but and i'm ready running six two on my current think pad ni test up but just out of the box some about and I don't even like this is pet but I don't even like the default test up while paper this time sometimes I do with but but there's something about the plasma six two doc yeah with the fedora logo and the little bit of .

IT does a good I agree. So this photo feels like it's really setting up for kate big forty two like there's a lot of nice things that occurs an example and this is probably where I have the most formal with this release, we are seeing serious progress on the video drivers. Now you can have the propriety invited driver and use secure boot and you .

can set IT up through the .

ones software yeah, that's like on feda, on fadell, a right. Thank you. Like that's the thing.

That's what you use to go get other distributions to do, right? And h, so they're continuing to push that ford. And i'm just i'm feeling formal because I well, I don't think it's there yet.

I can see within a release or two, you know. So another year, most we're going to have a really smooth wAlland secure boot in video experience. It's like it's it's almost there. It's not there quite yet, but it's there. We're like the leading edge distributions are starting to push for IT, and we saw this with a bone to as well.

And so because as I have been in the back of my mind, you guys know, and I talked about just a little bit on the show, I for now a few months now, i've kind of been looking at pricing a new rebuild of my PC. And every time I get to, like all of the specks and I look at the G, P, U. Prices, I just its way, it's just sits ridiculous.

And if I want anything that can do A I, I kind of stuck in the video world for right now. So maybe in a year, linux users won't be in this weird situation where they have to decide between a well behaving performance, stable desktop or something that can do kuta and other AI workload. Maybe you could have best of both worlds with whatever graph ics card you go with and even a thousand NVIDIA. But you see the beginnings here with the integration with secure. Now it's getting closer to just you don't have to have this funky one off set up when using a video card.

Well, this time around, I got quite distracted with the spins that are available. Again, I know a spin season here for brunch, and the federal miracle spin caught my eyes since it's kind of new and fresh for federal and the dora family, if you will.

Now, if you are not familiar with miracle, it's a telling wAlland first window manager built on top of mere, mere being that modern c plus plus library for writing whaling compositors economically has been working on for a while now. Miracle itself, written by primarily by Matthew cazalet, who works economical and on mere full time with the team there. So someone who knows what they're doing the project does disclose some goals with which I thought was good to get into.

They want to be a thailand window manager at its core, very much in the style vy three or sway for those who are a familiar with the intention to be a compositor that is flash year and more feature rich than either of those compositors. So are likes way effects. Another goal is to be compatible with I three from an I P C perspective.

In the same way that sway is. There's a bit of good compatibility between the different windows tAiling managers, which is nice to see, and to create a flashy, cozy tAiling winter manner that absolutely anyone can use, similar to hypertension, with less focus on expert users. And last day to be a flexable example, a full featured window manager built on top of mere. So a interesting go.

Yeah, fascinate. And it's really need to see this outside the ubon to ecosystem as well, right? For people that don't recall, mere was created as an alternative to whaling by conomo for a period time when IT wasn't clear if wheelin was going to get across the finish line, when IT became obvious that whalen was getting across the finish line, perhaps because of part of competition from mere colonic pivoted to make in mere a whale in client. And so we have seen this in certain areas inside the ubuntu code stem. But this is a fedora spin is .

why were pointing out to, you know, the only get a lot of flag for, you know, not invented here syndrome. But here's the case where they, yes, they explore their own way, but they ultimately switch switched to the consensus.

A really great talk given by a Matthew flock twenty twenty four, where he kindly describes how, yes, he works full time, economical and mere. But this is a side project, a personal side project, which means he could use voice, an expert that, but also make IT applicable a little bit more widely than just economic.

which is nice to see as a dev that that sounds really nice. You get to push forward on the core parts and then use the functionality your implementing your day job in personal projects for some well.

And if IT does meet its goal of being a flagship example of a fully featured window measure on top of mere than I think everybody wins, right? Brings more attention to all the projects.

I'm excited you looked at this, and i'm kind of curious to know how I went on what your .

observations were. yes. So my very first observation is right on the good home page, IT says this is still experimental. Please you know know this in advance, but also please send in you know bug reports in that kind of think.

So it's early days for the project and yet is an official spin, a fedora, which I think is a really interesting baLance. And I wanted to know your feelings on IT. So currently it's it's o dot three, dot seven and they say the goal is for the one doto in about december to be feature complete.

They do have a really nice road map as well where they fine, you know, stage one, we're going to do this and stage, you know uh, so there, I guess, just completed stage three being the zero three with stage for a bunch of things happening, but they seem a little behind on that timeline. So you know was written, I don't think that's going to happen. But I got me really curious because fedor has a bunch of spins.

Uh, some of them move far more mature than uh than miracle. But it's really interesting to me to see a project like this be accepted as an official spin so early in its development cycle. And at first I was kind of a worried about that.

As I say, this is polish at all. What's going on here, but really, it's getting a bunch of new eyes on the project is getting the project to, I don't know, fit into the ecosystem early on its life. And I think actually, I might be a good thing.

Yeah, it's it's either telling that the process to become a spin has become more streamline. And so it's it's more straight forward to do that. And there are a lot of spins now it's getting a little bit much to keep track of or IT.

Could be the people involved with the project see a potential and maybe in a particular use case for this? I mean, this is, this is an interesting beast, right? Using male like this to kind of handle some of the whale and stuff is fascinating.

And we call IT. The miracle spin kind of calls back to the beef y miracle, but also plays with mere i'm really love in the name. I think they nailed that tAiling window managers are very popular right now.

And so to have something that is a little more approach able and ready to go out the box seems like a pretty good product positioning. So like, I don't know it's for me and I I don't know how useful you found IT, but I I know you can argue they have too many spins already, but i'm kind of happy to see IT. I'm glad it's not like a multiyear process and that they can kind of get into that umbrella from the near beginning.

You I mean, we hear from our audience all the time. No, you has got ta try a telling window of you just give IT like a month three and and you eventually be coaxed and and so i've always been interested in like a purely tAiling environment because in plastic and using the tilling functionality all the time. But you know, i'm mousing around and stuff like that in.

But what I found kind of nice in miracle is that right now, all the keyboard bindings are there to move windows around in a thailand. And as you is expect, but like I mentioned in this, in this fourth stage, they're working specifically on using the mouse to kind open up the user landscape, let's say. So for someone who's just coming into a thailand window, manage are using the mouse to do things is a little bit nice.

Or do you learn the ways? So I thought that was really nice for a project like this. I mean that they're not the only ones doing IT, but is essential to on board new users. So chri wonder if you tried something like this, if IT was like a smooth, they are on boarding and you didn't have have to dive into the configuration fast.

get what you wanted. Yeah, absolutely. I became sort of waiting for a for a hyper land spin. But i'd be totally happy to give miracle a spin when you're using IT brand like the file manager and that's of our these gdk applications are the cute applications that what with a taking of the italian aside, what are your data .

applications? Yeah, I saw mostly judging based apps. So you know tuna is is a file manager, you know and love or hofus ly love.

hopefully no. Oh, this using .

sonar time .

is things you read but never say I, lad, there were familiar .

applications that even if I haven't used them you know, recently, I like, yeah I know that the firm agent stuff. So as far as I understand, that uses the N W G shell, which is the gdk three based U I, for sway in hybrid that they are using. So IT feels very congal unity usk and being, you know, having judici three.

So I thought I was familiar enough in that respect, but of course, me being sort of new to tAiling different enough for me to really have to slow down. But that's there's a learning curve for for about anything. So I found IT surprisingly smooth and snappy could on them there are, of course, bugs.

You know there's a bug that since my computer battery he was at zero percent is just so happened that the computer was using didn't have a battery. So there's that. But know it's a small day. I guess that's technically true.

Then zero, one hundred is all the same for that .

IT just didn't need a massive notification that was already. But so if you get around like for now, if you can get around those like small, uh, let's call them min consistencies. Then I thought I was a cool experience that I ve into. I think what the warning that exists on the get hub page is probably pretty accurate that, that certainly days, but they're moving forward. So expect a couple bugs but is called to dive in to try and see where had basically what .

you think about checking like in a year from hours or or maybe even six months yeah with that road .

map suggesting december for a one out. But then me sort of just mapping where I think that I think six months is pretty accurate. Give IT six months, they'll be in a place that is nice, mature. And I wonder if being an official spin now, will I have bring mixture eyes and mixed tra development to know time? So I think six months put on .

the calender. Well, there you go. The miracle spin as a brand look good. Texin room right is this is on the ten. Now, mister west, pay you win a little different direction. You went with a tried true key night, which is, I believe I are the kind of the silver blue but for the plasmodium ah yeah.

that's right. So I also got k plasma six that too. Yeah, uh, look really nice. I didn't and to like my default tail load from the mire was going real slow but I poked around if IT well.

like only thirty meg bites .

a second or I was real slow like one or two .

makes it's so bad.

This was more gas to say a photo a has a lot of is mired widely yeah and I was able to find several options that were .

away fast body.

That's not.

That happens to all I be there. Did I feel bad when I get fired up? You do the same thing, so just wait one day. Now the party .

couldn't speed up. Uh, unfortunately, is the atomic installation is still pretty slow, I think remember this when we were playing with the u blue stuff, you don't get a ton of feedback. Uh, you know starts off very just regular an account ean than IT does the actual, you know different set up for the comic style, but works totally fine.

I will say I did uh the little trick we talked about recently where I set things up using a virtual machine and then k exact uh into and men, they are just as soon as true for all the forty one seps. They're just really set up divergence ze very nicely. I'm using Q M U in the virtual basically for everything, including the graphics and just no issue is nothing to low, not to fuss with just or screen just work super snappy yeah I mean, like using the plasma. I'm morning placed on the host and plays me and there and using other one was basically the same.

I used, uh, for one of my installs. I also do the q mu installed to the rodez thing, just like I did for a bunt. U so I do the initial installation inside of vm, and then I K exact and boot into the physical hardware.

And same thing I was for this test. I was doing work station, and I could resize the kmu window and the resolution would automatic up inside. The government just worked.

Everything worked out. The box like my mouths could move in and out. No problem.

That was nice. Now okay if you don't recall the federal atomic stuff like silver, blue and kini, they use R P M O S tree under the hood ah so O S three is the part that handles trees, Violet stem trees like roof ile system trees um and provides the atomic bits right to let you think of these, not as individual packages, but like a single monolithic tree that you can swap to.

You go from one whole system to another whole system and that's where you get the a rollback functionality and you know atomic guarantees. And then there's R P M O S tree, which leverages O S three sorted for like the base stuff and providing those atomic parts, but then IT bridges over to using like lib D N F bridges over to the R P M side of thing. So you can take all of the R P M packages that obvious art exist for the in a red head and for ecosystems, and then use those to construct of a file system tree in O S.

Street is the output, and then switch between those. One of the things that's interesting about our history is that tries to also enable being able to do stuff you know like at client time, not just in the the image side, like you wanna add on some packages so that say, for instance, uh, there was um them installed already, but I wanted if you want to kill them, you can do um you can ask R P M of us treated to install that for you naturally works. IT is slow.

So I get has to interface with all the OS stuff. So basically that means that goes and gets the package and then has to build a whole new tree and then like stuff that into the O S tree side of things and then render that out. And then by default, that set up to be your next boot.

There is the apply live options you can switch to alive if you want to, but by default, youll just have to reboot to get that. So you probably don't want to install a tonne stuff that way. And you know that's what you expect for this type of set up.

That's what's on the tin can install the core things that you need just as like system level utilities and everything else. You know doing a tour box or just show box or installed via some container system play pack or yep, I did want to to keep playing with that was curious. So one thing can do is mount a writable slash user overly. We'll basically let you muck with the system, but in a way that doesn't change any files on desk and will go away when you read cool.

so you can kind of screw up your running system and experiment, but then you messed up too bad. Restart and go.

And then I was curious, like, what if you wanted to, like ada driver, or, you know, like IT, wasn't including the extreme, needed for one Better hardware? Or like, I do the weird, like memory device thing that needs the driver that isn't often inner him.

Movest wait. So when you say IT was slow, you are running IT from a RAM disk. Yeah, wow.

Damn, that is slow. Okay, if it's slow and you're using a RAM this, it's gonna slow folks. That's like best .

can scenario RAM desk .

and fiber. Just saying, yeah yeah yeah and a modern intel CPU RAM disk .

and fiber internet O I guess I know you're right and like the o yeah .

installing me of him, yes, but that's true. yeah. And then again, know you do that what you do a lot of that the beginning of a system. And then once you have your work station set up, it's sort of infrequent .

that you install and even supposed to go. So what you can do is by default, right, like the interim of fast that you built with, and the coral that's all generated upstream comes with the image, the tree that you clown down.

Uh, but you can use R P M S tree in the remove ash dash enable to allow, generate a local one, so they're still at sea slash rock at out comfort d, where you can put like custom communication files, so you can go there and ad say, like I watch to add this driver, make sure these drivers to hear whatever bother stuff you wanted do. And then you can run R P M S E in IT RAM of us dash E T C, dash, dash force sink uh and then that will rebuild you a fresh in term of us. Do all the things and IT works. yes. Um so that's all possible.

Okay, which I thought was .

need I always just seriously like obviously for most the intended use cases as like a you know box solid sort of like just out of the gold desktop aren't even maybe .

a corporate work station, but um and allow .

this is intended to meet these what of like you can build the system in C I once on a build farm and then like push this out and that's great. I like that. But i'm curious about like where the edges are, what kind of thing you can still do, where you can tweak IT. There was also a nice blog post which will link to that was kind of touching on all the stuff that was new in photo of forty one just for the atomic tests. There's some new unofficial al images which is cool kino yt mobile um and cosmic atomic, which I didn't try this time, but I will be trying in .

the future for sure that could .

be a fun combo. There's also other unofficial al images, uh, X, F, C, E atomic and aleut atomic OK. Boy.

you know, those last two, xx, c and l execute. Now that could be great for A V M or a remote desktop session. Yeah, right on A P, S, something really solid, nice, minimal desktop environment that this little stream in a remote session.

Uh, so one new component, h is built up tea OK a boot up. T is a small program that takes care of updating the boot loder. IT currently supports BIOS and E F I systems, but only R P M S tree based systems.

They're not automated, get to get to do yourself. But its eventual goals to be A O S agnostic cross distribution updates system. They can handle stuff like making church slash boot flash if I set up properly, or you know a riding down the um biosphere that you need for boot if you're not on the office system, the r stuff. So it's kind of an interesting .

like they're .

adding more program .

mably around .

setting up the blur stuff. And I have like a specific tool. If you do system debo, you can not do this already, but there hasn't always been great options for you know like not a standard zed way really ah and especially if you're not using right if you're not using like DNF are going about the Normal ways that up your system, where is gonna install some package and that's going to trigger some post install scrip that's gonna some other scripts. It's going to call the right stuff to set up the boot loder, you can need to lean to do a for you.

One of other goals of boot up tea is other architecture support, which is where things get really sideways fast, is when you start going to ARM or risk five or whatever, like IT would be really amazing if boot tea could support multiple package managers, if IT could be some sort of standard A P I. That understood BIOS, ify are architecture and everything could be just interface within a in a way where package managers weren't so brittle.

It's not quite the same. But on the nix of us in the next s universe, they have the idea of a boot spec when you like, build out a system generation to kind of list out all the stuff, like, here's where, here's what the kernel arms are, here's what the inner M F. S.

Lives in the next store, here's the kernel. And that way then different boot load implementations can take that and rendered out for their particularly things. So like I think it's trying to attack this a similar problem um from a maybe a more abroad approach also. Yeah next major evolution for atomic test stops which isn't fully here in four or forty one but is rapidly approaching and you touched on this earlier is .

booted containers.

our little our pal bootsey. Yeah we kind of first started talking about this on the show um back in the spring of twenty four with real image mode.

Yeah from the summit was bootsey was a big deal to summer .

and then we started playing around with the u blue family of Operating systems. They also use football containers and bootsey. So as we've been saying right now, silver blue and can know why they're using R P M S tree, not using suitable container stuff, but they're planning to transition .

to using booty. So the entire day, top is gonna a booted container. Yeah wow, it's so crazy like you're onna live in a container. Soon it's turtles all the way down.

But I haven't looked into IT for this update. When I last looked at boot, sea was mostly still targeting containers images with made from R P M story. I don't know if that been Brown yet, so but right now the basic idea is you know you're still using R P M A story to like leverage the rpm ecosystem.

Build yourself these atomic images, but you can just take that atomic image that you built with the O S story stuff, and then stuff that in N O C I container image. And then you can leverage, like a docker harbor, whatever you go to push the container images and then pull that down. And then once you pull that down, you can just extract IT. And now you have an O S ti image, you know like no directory, just like you have any other way that you get IT. So then all the tooling can just kind of work from there.

And I guess the advantage, right, for corporations or what not as they have these pipelines where they're publishing these things and they're pushing them out to systems. And so to make a boot table means that you could have a fleet of servers where you could push these things out.

and then they switch over and they boot from that image. You r the contains, yes, yeah, if you need is the same, right? So booty kind of just knows how to like interface with the RPMS2 generated images and knows how to like go pull the corneal and inner ama faster run tools from inside of IT to generate those and the entire up with the bull order that's been installed on the existing system。

Yeah, but it's like you were saying earlier, feel more you blue influence here. Like would this even be happening if you blue wasn't out there? Shown them that I can be done and is being done.

Good question. And I am happy to see IT that is not a criticism at all. I think this is this is in fact, kind of a beautiful way that free software can work.

IT was neat that I was so easy to get going to. So like, I was on my R P M O este version, and I and I did the R P M A R install boot. I got that rebutted, got that there.

Uh and then you just sort of tell IT to install and you point IT at a docker repo like just like you would put in a docker compose file, you know like the image, the repo image name, you just tell IT like, hey, make this my system and then he does IT and accused IT up for the next boot your reboot in but then yet a boost system going, yeah one thing stage me, I haven't. There's like a lot. I want to play more.

It's all fascinating. IT does kind of feel like this is taking the image approach, like to the next level. You know what ARP m story added, that kind of a client side stuff.

I don't know how prevalent that is on the boosey side of things. At least now I get the feeling place from the dogs. I could find that it's it's going to push you even more to the like.

But you need if you want a new inner M F S, you build a new container image that has the inner m, you, what you can do locally. So the new version of like doing local changes to address on driver is forking from the image you downloaded and you know rebuild A M M F S on a new layer and biting that which is told fined. And if you are already familiar with containers, that's probably easier to deal with. A lot of other ways about handling that set up.

So this is what I think you and I find interesting about this. This is not necessarily our preferred way to build a system, but the reality is there is a genome's industry of professionals that have been trained on container workload. And it's been the focus of red hatts training now for quite a while.

And one of things that was clear, red hatt summit the summer, is they are just extending container workflows to everything. And what IT does mean is that people who are not linux systems experts are still, at least to some degree, have access to the tane that allows them to assemble linux systems, maintain linux systems, patching systems in a way that they can just use the tools they already understand. Don't have to learn to become .

a linux person. Yeah might feel like a lot of all you've ever done this DNF if your building container images all day and ship and .

those and stuff is easier, actually but for us that that we've come out IT from, you know, the old days where your system ministry or and you build that up and why are you containing all this stuff with all these layers? Because that's the workflow. The red has been training them for the last decade, and now you've got a whole industry of professionals that know what containers are and how they work and snap into their workflow. So it's it's fascine to see them kind of position this to make this available to these types .

of professionals. Well, and I can see a version where you I was complaining about the installer doesn't really man in all in a unch of right to review otherwise would. But I would hope that eventually there be a stream mind process you might be able to do IT today. I just haven't looked all the underline pieces but with that boot up d stuff and boots like could I just you know boot up whatever all live city format myself some the dollar partitions, uh, use boot up tea to put my boot load on there and then use boot sea from the live environment to download the container image and then write out the that for the new system, tie up the boot load stuff and be done you know just like I I think so that .

seems great and you could just buy, pass the slow and dollar. Yeah, that would be the type of insulation you and I would prefer, I think, and I think you could do that. We I don't know. We've actually tried IT. I don't think we have tried IT.

but I think you right. And as these tools develop, I think that the flexibility you like these things will be able to do or just going to increase, which i'm excited about that .

because it's sort of fun because you just boot any other or any other linux away, then you just take over. So is great.

And you know like um I I think part of the thing they're waiting for sea hy to catch up uh because they needed the new images generated with DNA five and with boots I built into them and those were being pushed to some other repo that wasn't the official one. I know the details but it's coming. But like there's a you know you can now once you have got the boozy stuff, you can switch to a evil image, no problem. You can switch to the unofficial cosmic atomic build. No problem like this is just one command that's .

yeah there's advantages to that. I'm really glad you tried out the dug into that west because IT makes me feel really good about where they are gone with all this now, did you have any problems? Did anything break anything not work? Was there any negatives in your in .

Acris we each one directions may be you didn't expect. And of course, west did some crazy stuff, but I know you have some crazy stuff in youtube. What did you get up to?

I did kick around the standard work station version, which is great, of course, this release, but I looked up the assai project and I wanted to see if they had officially released for forty, forty one. And IT looks like it's not actually sanctioned yet. IT hasn't been fully like blessing released yet.

There's still just kind of monitoring ing things. So I went to ended the right thing and just upgraded right to. I saw I forty one and that a boy IT was absolutely smooth.

And this is my second major upgrade of the us because I think I started with the door thirty nine, maybe even thirty eight, but I know I started with thirty nine, brought that sucker up to use that about, you know, two, three times a week, so pretty frequently for the whole release. And now i've brought that up to a door forty one and literally not a single air, not a complaint about any package conflicts. Great, nothing.

And really simple. Clean up afterwards and everything like that. Of course. Now i've got plasma, a six, twenty two or six, two dot two, I should say not twenty two, six, two dot two using wayland of.

I will say, you know, if you are going to be doing the style of them in place. Major version upgrade tnf, probably the package ment sure you do what it's nice too.

because then you can be like, hey, i'd like to review all of the new conflict files and see if I should emerge them, and sure enough, to them. And there were fixing cups problems, and that was really nice to see. So this is on my apple m one max macbook.

It's a sixteen inch from twenty twenty one. It's got to sixty four gigs of RAM, and it's got a the m one max ice storm processor. So it's it's a good amount course.

I don't actually know what IT is. And then with a saudi linux, you using linux six eleven on zero desh four hundred and it's got full graphic support. But even a bigger deal, boys, is I can finally use my speakers.

How did IT where you super? Or choosey on what you played first?

I think I, I think I went to you to and searched for music, and then I went, and I listen to some pockets. I just kind of do a sample. And then I installed some games.

So I was like, I wanted to hear the range of IT, because while this has been around for a minute now, I felt like the forty one time period was when I was safe to finally install this, because when they first started developing, this had turned out that they could destroy the speaker, that you could drive IT way beyond what you should be able to, and blow them out. And some of the first, a development test, they immediately blew out the speakers on their mack books. Yeah, unlike, I guess.

some of the other ways the em systems work. Like this time you'd like a really raw interface to just be able to do whatever you want with the speaker. And then he turns out that there's like Michael s software running that's actually handling making sure things E, Q, ride and transit answer, don't go for too long and too loud.

And so turns out that there is a lot of lift being done in software to massage the sound. And so it's not fully working yet for all of the map box, but a lot of the m1， m two serious, you're pretty much set and mine was as well. So there was just a package called I saw I audio.

I saw the dash audio that I had to install and they took care of everything. IT sets up the wired plumer dsp profiles that you need because it's an array of speakers in this stupid laptop. And IT installs a couple of dependencies that are required to do some of the audio processing.

And this is where you can have a weird experience because you can have the same machine when you're in matos, and then you put in the linux. And the two sound different is the same hardware, but they sound different. And IT comes down to taste.

And the team that writes the assai audio driver writes on the get tab here. While IT is evidence that apple put immense amount of effort into ensuring these machines have good sound, they tried a little too hard on top of being tuned for an exaggerated human curve. Macos makes you of psycho acoustic about base enhancement dynamics, range compression and specialization tricks to spice up the acoustic profile of these machines.

Unfortunately, not only does this color the sound in a way that is reminiscent of early beat headphones, apple actually has a bug in their psycho acoustic base processor that causes audible art effects. So this whole set up is is quite simply unacceptable for anything but the most casual of listening. We aim to deliver a mostly flat response curve with an audible range that will faithful reproduce source material without adding excessive amounts of color.

Well, you know it's a difference of opinion, but you might think that the trillion dollar company that literally has a team of audio scientists maybe knows what they're doing because vocal stink now like the vocals are motier. They're not as crisper, clear and IT doesn't sound as good. IT works though, so i'm very happy and it's still Better .

than most laptop speakers. I will say IT does like the the beats thing in the that I like listen to yeah but IT also strikes me that like probably consumers want that like just probably putting on good headphones or like your mind speakers, if you're going mix and you need flatter.

all right? I developer looked at this and a developer said this is technically not accurate. And apple looked at this and said, we're going to send this out to consumers, and we're going to study what their reaction is, and then we're going to find tunes in an acoustically defined space that is meant to monitor this and hear and listen how humans here, and then we're going to tweet this until just get just right. And what of a team of people working on this for a year, and then we ll send that feedback, duck back to the audio people. And since they have no idea what we're going to, what kind of conclusion we're going to come to, they're just going to build the systems that we can define IT any way we want and we can missa's IT over time.

So what's your saw he for?

Can be got. Yeah, I know. right. I saw he.

What do they call colorful edition? But know what? It's still pretty good. Sound games sound fine. It's really just vocals that I have the biggest complaint with.

And I picking up, right, that this is powered by a speaker. safety. D .

Ah but you heard me say IT and boys, it's real gaming gaming in in a saw I forty one is just a steam package install away. And what's happening on the back end is incredible. They call IT the assai game playing tool kit. IT integrates welcome one out three x eighty six emulation proton for windows compatibility and open C L three auto. And you're just DNF installed steam and it's installing the sex emulator which emulates X D six on ARM like rosea does for matos s it's using wine to translate the windows A P ics in D, X, V, K and of course V K 3d to translate drag dex to walking .

that any of this works at all is magic。

IT gets Better. There's a curve bowl in here. Memory page sizes. Oh, right. So Operating systems allocate memory and fixed size pages.

And if an application expects the smaller page size in the system uses the break, there's like an is the insufficient alignment of allocations essentially. And the problem here is, is that X Y six expects four k pages, but apple m series use sixteen k page sizes. So the nice party is linux can work with either, but I cannot mix them, but I can virtualize them.

So they actually have a tiny, tiny virtual machine called M U V M that's passing through the GPU and your game controller devices, all the hardware. And then that tiny little M U V M is emulating four k page sizes on top of the sixteen k page sizes. There's .

even A V M in here, six to do your translation wow yeah and .

the effects is emulating the actual x ty six to arms.

right? Okay.

it's while that that sounds super .

fragile so it's not fantastic know um things work though surprisingly well. I'll tell you where what's gonna really good is gains in your repo. So like the atic and tux card and anything is in your repo that's open source.

A lot of the flat packs that have armed versions, they're gonna work really good. But a lot of the team games work too. So after you DNF install steam and you get IT all set up, and you turn on protein emulation for all the titles I played no man, sky fall out four works.

I played race the sun, um I played teenage mutant turtle, whatever the latest one is that essentially turtles in time um played all of those with no problem. A couple of games didn't execute that Normally, do execute, just find under proton. So IT i'd say like seventy five percent, maybe even seventy percent, but not like an expert on this.

But I believe now with this set up, with this game ticket, there's actually more games available on the m hardware under linux than under macos itself, which is absolutely remarkable. You think about IT, because if sixty eight percent of my proton, seventy percent of my proton games work now on on linux, on the m one well, that crushes they have available is on my oz. Yeah, and it's incredible theyve pulled this off.

Now I think where this really, really, really hits the actual, like full of ninety five percent area is when this is a little more development. So probably gets even Better in for four forty two and even you know probably there in for a forty three. So we're looking a little bit out.

But also, I think when you get a little bit Better GPU hardware, you know, when the assault project starts working on m three and m four support in two thousand and twenty five, which is what i've seen, um is the plan. Then you're gonna even Better, more capable gp s but again, i'm on A M one system here and i'm playing these games and IT doesn't feel any different than when i'm playing them on the next ty six system. Uh, IT was one game I played after a while.

I got a little leggy. And I think if I swapped out the proton runtime, I may have had to Better go at IT. I just use like whatever the latest version was, right. I was just born away.

But and then I would even have thought necessarily to try.

So it's such a smooth system. Wifi works, sleep works, blue tooth works, gaming works, screen brightness. Sound and volume control the hot keys work know all of the you function keys work um and I should have try IT west but I swear IT feels like the snap est version of plasma.

Maybe it's the disk in this thing. Maybe it's the drivers in k win, but everything opens a little bit faster like console and dolphin, they all appear on the screen just a little bit that and it's not just the timing of the effects. It's something different about IT.

It's like that you can you can never throw. It's always delivering the interfaces is always snapp y more so than any of my x six plastic systems. Um so in a way it's more and more becoming like one of my go to linux systems.

Now what does that need to cross the line where IT wouldn't be crazy to buy an am serious laptop with the intention of just primarily easing his eye?

Well, at this point, m three, m four support. If you're spending this kind of money, you know, unless you want to get used and get to them one, you're going have a good time. If you were, say, to buy users right now, save some money just about dinner, everything works.

Which are really lacking are a lot of the native apps. IT may be possible with fax to start emulating day to day day top applications too. I just don't know how to point the tool at that, but that's it's not just for games. So there's you know, it's a lot of stuff i'm doing in the browser and I have a pin tab for a lot of things, which works surprisingly well. So i'm not really actually missing out .

on much and I am doing that a fair man on even on my active machines these .

and I don't think still there's some things that you know, if i'm honest and I was really using this everyday. Why I don't use IT everyday is I don't think I can hook up a thunderbolt or something. I don't think I can OK up a bunch of external displays yet.

Might be different on the mini, but I I don't think so. The macbook promex. So there might be a few things like that, that are still not there. But if you're just looking if you were looking to buy a used m one max on ebay and you just wanted something is going to be a great battery life, incredible performance that never get hot.

You never hear the fan and feel super faster and user and and can play a lot of games that you might already have in your library and you can still do on the mac west if you need to like a checks on those boxes. It's just, you know, the education. You want to start hooking up multiple monitors and you need a bunch x ty six apps.

You want to me and I work whatever might be here. You want to play the absolutely this game came out. It's not quite there yet. But what's really nice about fedoras, a saw I spin, is it's the premium experience, right? That's why I chose use for deora and continuity use for do a and not reload IT with something else because when they got the game kitt ready, IT was just DNF install team.

We're like if i'm on a bunch to where i'm on archer, another distribution, I have to go through a whole bunch of hops and adam repose doing all kinds of stuff, but the team is publishing and pushing stuff in like a saw hei ripple. And so all that stuff that they're working just a DNF away from all the all the fixes. And it's it's really like the premiere way to experience linux on the same one hardware.

You can do other distributions and and still works great. But you really feel like you're getting you're just like write downstream of weth that developers are publishing. So as soon as they figure something out or they makes life easier, it's like, boom, it's right there in the door.

And then the using gets the other distress too. But so that this is one of my favorite ite spins, because IT takes what what is what is really nice hardware, and IT makes linux extremely accessible to them. The installation is really straight forward IT IT is really solid on the mac mini, which could make for a great little headless server at this point.

And plash mr. Six two two on this hardware with Kevin is so smooth and so clean. It's one of the best experiences really, really like IT. Of course, DNF five was fantastic. Little bit faster, little bit cleaner output.

Um you know it's it's rare that I don't go through this process and leave have some criticisms, but I really don't because what what doesn't work and I would say what criticisms I do have well, that outside the the project, like they don't determine if element makes an ARM version, right? They don't they don't drive that. They don't make a decision of slack makes an ARM version.

It's outside their control. They're just making the best ARM workstation out there right now. I think just hands down, I think they're making the best armed linux workstation out there. And if you ve got access to the hardware, totally worth a try. So if you give the door for you want to try or if you try out one of the spins that we didn't try booted and let us know how IT went good or bad, we want to hear that.

The combination of butterfly snaps, shots with snapp er and transactional updates, micros s and open QA tested images makes tumbleweed one of the most bulk of systems i've ever used. I used transactional updates that timer to automatically update my system around midnight, and reboot manager will trigger a reboot round four A M. If there are any updates, I wake up every morning to a freshly updated and rebooted system and early ever need to run a manual zip.

Thank you for talking about audio bookshelf. I've been running IT since you discussed IT in linux unplugged five, four, seven, and it's been excEllent in surprisingly little time. I had IT running on nexo s and imported all my audio books with lation. And I haven't .

look back. Well done and also very, very, very happy with my audio bookshelf set up as well. Still, I think liberation is the Better way to go because the meta data extracts from audible just displays Better by default in open bookshelf. The android APP for open bookshelf has a couple of really neat features.

One of them being that you can go into the settings and you can say that if I start the book after a certain period time, like nine pm, or for me, I said at at nine thirty, automatically start to sleep timer. Another thing that the android APP does, that the IOS APP does not do, is the android up, while not every single time, but most often will fade out for the last ten seconds. IT fades out.

Where's the IOS APP? Just hard stops. But all of that together is it's just really so fantastic, along the same lines of happy that I am with audio bookshelf.

And I mentioned a one more time, it's a sah TV. And IT gives you your ability to create your own live TV stations essentially from your media collection. So I have about ten channels and they play different stuff.

Like I have a star ric channel. I have channels for individual star trick shows. I have like a ninety TV that's got sign failed in home improvement.

And personal question, do you have a little exaction show channel?

God, no, no, I can not stand myself. But so I just if you're love an audio book shelf, you might love arsa's TV two, because I have been really thrilled with IT.

I do love how every time you talk about assets TV, the number of channels you have got up.

Oh yes, what I realized like i'll be watching the show. I'll be like alto, a channel like I kind of wish what I got in this show, and I can just make a channel for that show. Do you have a great channel? IT.

Over the years I used the first with the S, F, T, P. Than no machine, all while utilizing later I will purpose. The machine is a firework opening ports up for A V, S, F, T, P, and also for no machine.

Throughout this time, I consistently chose suit as my desktop and server Operating system on my desktop, i'm currently running tub just like my mom started using the summer. Meanwhile, i'm running leap on the service side. You know I don't think we had anybody say they were actually using leap right now, but i'm right and leap down costs.

We got one leap um well, explain why we're write in this down next week. He goes on to finish up with, uh, I take the fund and automating my server set up through auto yeast installations. Yes, every new version of leap trigger a fresh autos installed for me, even for fun i've set up some discourse x mine miners, uh, which is a crypto currency mining program on tub wei, accessible via pixi.

Each update prompts and automatic, automated run with my virtual machines. And I do ninety ninety percent of time I deployed with P, X, C installs. That's pretty cool. I wish we were using pixi and network anymore in the studio would be pretty need of these all these machines. And you could just rebuilt and employer a fresh new image after an updates come out as a pretty slake setup.

IT is really cool. And it's been an ad winter for a prolonged period time. I don't think the show would be here without the swarm. I don't think I know without our members and our boosters, the show wouldn't be here and they're doing, you know, kind of Better to add industry like IT. Seems like it's kind of turning around for some folks, but I am not one hundred percent sure that they'll ever fully return to our niche. I think we've just kind of moved on.

especially like the really technically niche ones know. And we didn't do this. We never had this problem. But a lot of pod casters is overstated their numbers by that thirty percent. And they got burned.

And in part of part of me, hoes, that means the value of value model will grow and expand because podcasting is so unique in that no one company owns the podcast platform. It's all R, S S. Feeds there, hundreds of clients that compete in an ecosystem out there and each podcast kind of like its own.

But spoke business, there's not there are not following one particular model like you might on youtube. So podcasting is very still kind of unique in that way. And I think the funding source is best when it's distributed and it's from the audience as well.

So while it's very painful over the last couple of years not to have sponsors, especially with inflation going like crazy, i'm still, still kind of excited about the transition we're making. Let's figure this out exactly. We've got to figure this out.

But what's really great is they also make this tool of available for mac and windows. So for somebody who's getting their eyes so for the first time, it's probably not something you think about a lot as a linux user. It's actually kind of tRicky for them to figure out I gotta get to what, and then I gotto do what to IT, and how do I do that?

And I get some third party tools to install us.

And there are some good ones, but there are little older, little less user friendly. Fedora media writer works some lines, of course, but to have IT on macos and windows, I think is a big deal. And if you try out, uh, any goal based linux, but in particular for door forty one work station, then you might want to take a look at my next pic.

And that is G D M settings, where you can customize your log in screen change aspects about its luck, the background stuff that plasma a has built in settings to do. But genome does not. IT is only a fight packs APP. Two, I believe I think two of these picks on here are only distribute to fight packs. G dm studies .

So if you wanted to tweet g dm or put your own backgrounds, change some of them, you know. settings. There you go.

And then I got one last one for you. And as you heard me say earlier, i've been using a lot of web apps because i've been using ARM. And this next step is just called web apps.

And as you might think from the name, IT allows you to install websites as desktop apps. These common go, this one is a more modern take on IT. And so any APP or any website that you want, you can have a shop as an APP with its own separate window. And um he uses his own internal browser isolated from the system browser.

just don't call lumb web.

Yeah they're not wap, but to this is nice. I played around. I had one that didn't work very well for me in a couple that work just fine.

So three apps for year and hear on ARM or something, I got to be able to take some of these websites that you frequently have to use in the web browser and just break them out into their own window with their own process is really nice. And that's what where BBS does. So three, count tom, three for door, a media writer, G, D, M, settings and web apps, which I will have links for in the shown notes.
