Malaysia held its fifteenth general election on 19 November 2022 after it was called at short notice before the end of the last government’s term. What was this election all about? How to understand its results? Can we consider Malaysia to be experiencing a democratic transition? And what comparative lessons does this election offer for political competitions elsewhere in Southeast Asia? In this episode, Duncan McCargo, director of the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) and a professor of political science at the University of Copenhagen, joins Mai Van Tran, a postdoctoral researcher at NIAS, to discuss his experience observing Malaysia’s GE15 on the ground.
