Hello everybody and welcome to AfterBuzz TV. This is the after show for Chasing Live. This is episode 10, Finding Chemo. I'm Heather Joy Smith and with me tonight is... Hi guys, I'm Michelle B. Hey guys, I'm Kristen Strange. And tonight we also have a very special guest with us. Haley Ram is here from Chasing Live. Hi!
So welcome. Thank you. So let's talk about tonight's episode a little bit before we dive in and ask you some questions. Tonight's episode was April checking into the hospital and starting her chemo treatment. Yes. So it was a bit emotional, not like, I mean, all the other ones bring me to tears every week. We tend to do that to people.
But this one more so because I felt like she really looked sick for the first time. I mean, the makeup and everything was on point tonight. I was so jealous at how pretty she looked without makeup. Oh, I know. It's insane. It's actually annoying. Like, she's so perfect. And they're trying to make her look sick. Like, can you not be so pretty? I was thinking the same thing when Dominic comes into her room. And I'm like, man, if I look that good in the house,
It still works. It still works, yeah. Oh, go ahead. Sorry. Oh, I was just going to say our makeup artists, they do such a good job about being realistic. And I just, I love that, you know, it's not a young girl playing cancer who's, you know, wearing mascara. Yeah. Making cancer pretty because it's not pretty. Yeah. Yeah. So I just love that they do that. So tonight we had the return of Dominic. Yeah.
And we all know that I'm a big fan of Dominic. Everyone loves those dimples. I did not care for him returning. She does not like... She's a Leo fan. Big time Leo fan. I love to hear what people are. Love. Love me some Leo. Yeah. Yeah. I do too. Yeah.
I, like, fall for that sarcasm. Yeah. I know. I'm like, oh, you're being sarcastic to me? I love it. I feel like every week, though, I kind of flip-flop back and forth because, you know, some weeks Leo's a jerk and some weeks he's the greatest person that ever walked this planet. And then this episode we had some interesting moments from Dominic. So I really started out the episode loving that he was back and so excited. But I got to say, by the end of the episode, I was like...
See you later. I flip-flopped between the two of them, too, but at the end of this episode, I was also like, sorry, Dominic, you really have to go. He really did win, Leo. He just won. I don't ever flip-flop, but it's just for my belief that she should be with Leo.
So let's talk about this really quick, about Dominic coming back. So he finds out last episode that April has cancer and flies back to, I guess, be with her. And kind of finds out a little situation happened between April and Leo. So he wasn't too excited to hear about that, which I wouldn't be either. I was surprised, though, that he didn't just stay and...
I'm going to support you no matter what because he's all, oh, I'm such a good guy. I could be there for you but you slept with someone else and you have cancer and I'm going to leave. Like, he literally dumped her in her hospital bed like she said. I was not expecting that. I thought he was going to like, it could have waited. Yeah. He was a little
a little harsh. Well, at the same time, didn't she sleep with Leo when they were on their break? They were on a break. And in her defense, they were never that serious. Exactly. They weren't going to move in together. It was clear that they really, really, really liked each other and that there was something there, but, you know, life happens and he moved away. I feel like he kind of lost his chance. If he wanted to pursue something with her seriously, then maybe she would have stayed. Yeah. Yeah.
Now, also with April starting her chemo, she had, maybe you can clear this up, because there was some times where, I'm not sure if it was hallucinations or if she was dreaming these episodes. Definitely hallucinations. They say that when you're going through chemo, you can hallucinate sometimes. So what better way to hallucinate than bring back our dead father? Yeah.
I thought that was sweet, though. It was really sweet, and I love that actor so much. He's so good. I loved him on My So-Called Life. I was obsessed with that show. So, yeah, it's really heartbreaking. I mean, even filming those scenes, I felt kind of bad for him because every time we bring him back, he's in a hospital bed, like...
Yeah. Chained up to, like, all this stuff and, like, could not move or get out of that bed. But he was a trooper. And, yeah, those scenes really break me apart. And it was sad to see Jackson, too. I don't know if he actually really did die or... He did. He did. He did. We like Jackson. I know. I feel like I'm, like, breaking that news in a way. Yeah.
Yeah. That's kind of bad. Well, I think we pretty much figured she hallucinated. Yeah, he died. So that was, you know...
I think an eye-opener for her to kind of see these people that she really loved, you know, even if it was a hallucination or whatever. Because, you know, when she woke up the next day, she seemed more refreshed. Like, okay, I got this. I'm going to take this on again. It's like they were very encouraging towards her. Yeah. And especially, you know, what her dad said was very sweet and...
Yeah, I think that that's what she would like to imagine her dad would say. And given how we've seen their relationship before in that one flashback scene like a few episodes ago, it seemed like they had that relationship where they could really like talk to each other about anything. Yeah. So that was really sweet. Yeah.
It was also good to see Danny this episode kind of come to the hospital. Yeah. And really have like a breakthrough moment because he obviously wasn't feeling, you know, very good about this whole situation happening. And he didn't really know how to react to it and was awkward. It was so sweet. It was sweet to see him and her talk about it and work through it and make him more comfortable. Yeah. Yeah.
I wish they kind of did that with Dominic. He kind of just came out and was like, why did you lie to me when we first started dating? And I don't know. In her defense, I feel like she didn't tell anyone. And she wasn't very comfortable with telling him yet because they just started dating. Yeah. He overreacted. He really did. For sure. Yeah. They should have talked it out. Especially because in the first episodes...
you know, he kept saying, like, he wasn't comfortable with people having cancer or being sick or anything like that. And so what was she supposed to do, you know? I wouldn't have told him. No. He's all, I'm uncomfortable with it. Okay. Okay, well, I guess that would be awkward. Shut the damn down. Okay, so speaking of awkward moments. Oh, gosh. I think I know what you're getting at. Let's talk about Britta and Grew. Yeah. Because what the heck happened this episode? I'm just,
No. Her parents, they're a bunch of a-holes. They're awful. No, seriously. And they don't, you will see them more. And they don't get better. Oh, no. Yeah, so I won't, you know, spoil too much, but you will see them more. Well, aside from her parents, who do you think ratted her out to the principal?
I think it was Ford. Yeah? Yeah, I do. Because she's moody and she was pissed off. She's clearly a terrible friend. Yeah, and she wanted to get back at me. But also, Ford and Brenna may not be over. Brenna and Greer may not be over. You'll definitely be seeing them more. What about Brenna and Kieran? Yeah. They're over. Yeah.
They're over. Relationship-wise, they're over. It doesn't mean that they can't. Yeah. Team Kieran was very short-lived. It was like it was very powerful in the beginning. Everyone loved him. He's a great actor, and he's a really good friend of mine, too. Augusto, he's awesome. But yeah, once Greer came in, she just wiped Team Kieran out. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Well, we liked Greer and Brenna better. Yeah. I think Greer is better influence. Yes. Apparently her parents think that Brenna is not. No. No. They're pretty harsh. I'm not that bad. No. Exactly. I'm really not. I thought
Brenna's mom, your mom on the show, did a great job of defending you. She's so sweet. Every time she said that line, it made me teary-eyed. She's just, she's such a good actress. Yeah.
yeah, just every single time it got me. I feel like Greer's parents kind of lucked out in Greer kind of experimenting with a different type of girl. She could have gotten way worse than Jenna. Yeah. She could have been dating a drug
or something awful. Totally. At least Brenna's joining stuff with her. Right. She's not dragging her down other than getting drunk once in Florida. I'm trying. They just don't understand that Greer has been a good influence for me. And without Greer, I probably wouldn't, you know.
be going down that path. Yeah, because you definitely were headed towards a whole different path. I was partying. Yeah, which I didn't know in the beginning. You know, I didn't know once she found out that her sister had cancer if they would take that route and if she would, you know...
be even more edgy and, you know, maybe get into drugs or something. But they didn't, and that made me really happy. It wasn't the obvious choice. Yeah. Do you like playing, like, the bad girl or the good girl better? Yeah.
I actually haven't had that much experience playing the bad girl. I think I've played the bad girl like twice before and it was so much fun because I never get to. But I don't know. I like playing the good girl. I like being likable, you know? Like a likable character to watch. Yeah, Brenda started out a little edgy. I feel like she became more likable as she was there more for April. Yeah, it was funny because we did the pilot like two...
two years ago. So we were doing this for so long without anyone watching it. So I didn't think about people's reactions so much. And then when the first, like, three episodes aired, people were like, Brenna's awful. Brenna's just not that nice. She's so annoying. And it's true. She is. And she becomes more likable. But...
At first, I was kind of taken aback. I was like, what? She's not that bad. Just wait. Trust me. I feel like, though, because she's on the good path right now, we've kind of forgotten about her being so bad in the previous episode. She's redeemed herself. Yes, absolutely. But later on, you'll find out why she was the way she started out. Interesting. Interesting.
Now, have you guys already filmed the whole second half of the season or season two? Yeah, we have. So they do like season one A, one B, and we've done the second part. So I think that we were on our second to last episode when the pilot aired. So we were like 20 episodes in when we first aired. Yeah. I'm excited. So I know...
that happens for a while. Oh my gosh. Can you tell us if we'll see Leo again? That's my only question. No, I have a feeling that someone would be really pissed off at me if I spilled that one. I'll just have to wait and see. You'll have to keep watching. If we don't see him again, I'm just going to re-watch the first season and then make my own second. Sorry.
I'm just going to make my recap. You'll go into Chasing Life fan fiction. I'm going to start editing videos and make it so it looks like April and Leo live happily ever after. How about a cartoon version? There we go. Animated. Yes. So, Michelle, do you want to ask some of your Twitter questions? Oh, yeah. Okay, so I had one Twitter user ask, what was your favorite episode of film in season one?
That's so hard because, like I said, we did like 20 of them. So it's even hard to like think back on the favorite. I think episode 10, just because we knew it was the finale. And there's something about like knowing that you're filming the finale. It's so much fun. It's exciting. So I think that that was my favorite one. And also I got to do a scene with Beth and April. Yeah.
And that doesn't happen much. And it was a really cool opening scene. It was a very cute opening. Yeah, a lot of fun to do. And then we had more scenes in the hospital. So I think that that was my favorite episode. Yeah. Yeah. So when you guys are filming, because you said you don't film very many scenes with Beth, do you guys kind of film those all separately? Or are you guys all there at once? I don't know. It depends on how they schedule it. But a lot of times, like...
will be first up in the morning and she'll be there until like the third scene and then I come in at the end of the day so we overlap a lot and if we're in the same scene together then obviously we're there at the same time but yeah it just it kind of depends we usually all see each other almost every day yeah yeah and if it's been like a week since I haven't seen Richie which we do go a week without like seeing each other at work because we are never in the same scenes together yeah it's like oh my god you're here
This is exciting. Because we all hang out outside of it. So it's like a bonus to get to see your friends at work, too. Yeah. So you guys started filming two years ago then? Yeah, two years ago. I was 20 when we did the pilot and...
If we get picked up for a third season, I'm going to be 23. Wow. Playing in high school? Yeah, playing in high school. I'm like permanently in high school. I have a question here from Pamplemoose76 from Twitter. I like the name. Yeah. And they want to know, is April's cancer going to affect Brenna even more now that she knows that she's not on a bone marrow match? Yes. Yes.
It will. It kind of tears her up inside because, like, knowing that you can't help your family and that there was that option that you might be able to. She was, like, holding on to it and then finding out that she couldn't. It's like you want to be able to help and you'll do anything for your family and just knowing that you can't, that it's not an option is, yeah, really heartbreaking for her. So she has...
you know, scenes coming up where she just kind of loses it and yeah, it's sad. Well, do you think Natalie will be a match? I don't know. Maybe.
When Michelle and I were watching the episode, there was a moment between Sarah and George where they were kind of talking about, like, you know, years ago. Were they dating? Was that what that was referencing? Yeah, I think that that's what they're implying. They've never said it, but yeah. It seems like...
Sarah dated George before my dad, you know, they're brothers. And yeah. Totally caught that. Yeah. It is kind of awkward. It makes me think like, I really want there to be a flashback scene, like how all of that happened. Yeah. Like him at like George asking my dad if he can date my mom. Yeah. How awkward. And like, how long did they date before? I mean, my dad asking George. Yeah. Wrong way. There was, um,
A few aftershows ago that we did and we were like, I wonder if April is actually George's daughter. Oh, yeah. Oh, my God. When that relationship first started happening, we're like, ooh.
I mean, I guess that could be an option. That would be kind of crazy. Yeah. Well, maybe not. Yeah, I don't think so. Because when they were talking about it, he did say that he left for 26 years. Yeah. Yeah, he said 20. Yeah, and then, like, his brother asked her if, like... That's a really good memory. I don't even remember that. I know, that's pretty good. I'm like, really? I don't remember.
I like hearing about real bone marrow surgery. Thanks for that piece of information. Yeah, you're welcome. I noticed that too. Yeah. I was like, oh, 26 years. My theory about Uncle George and the dad is not relevant anymore. It's so great hearing like a viewer's standpoint because I never picked up on that. Maybe George could still be a bone marrow match. Maybe. Did he get his cheeks washed? Yeah. Why didn't he? I don't know. He didn't. Hmm. No. No.
Next season. Yeah. Yeah. There's a lot to find out. Yeah, I feel like there's so many unanswered questions that we all have about what's going to happen. I'm just like, I can't wait until December. I know. I know. I'm really rooting for Sarah and George's relationship, though. Yeah. They were really cute, and they were like little teenagers. Yeah. When they were talking, and they kissed, and they're like, yeah.
Yeah. And we haven't seen Sarah that happy in a while. Yeah. She's had a tough go with the dating situation for sure. We kind of miss grandma though. Where's grandma? Yeah. Grandma's amazing. I love grandma. Awesome. She's the best. I love her so much. She actually lives in New York.
And she's 85 years old, Rebecca Scholl. And she flies from New York to L.A. every week and a half, two weeks. Wow. And works and has, you know, like 5 a.m. call times like everyone else and has 12 hour days. And so cool. I want to be like that when I'm 85. That's amazing. Yeah. She looks so good for 85. She loves it. Yeah. She has a lot of fun.
Well, really quickly, going back to Grena and... Wait. Grena. Yeah, Grena. Grena. Can you tell us if they're going to be secretly dating? Do you think they'll go? I mean...
Just put yourself in a teenager's shoes who really likes someone and teenagers sneak around. You're right. Yeah. I don't see why they wouldn't. And Grinna's face, too, when her parents were dragging her away. It was like looking at her like, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It's not my fault. But we'll still hook up. Yeah. I'll see you. I'll call you.
She says her parents go out of town all the time. Oh, yeah. Yeah, they do. They're gone all the time. Okay, so speaking of that, when this whole situation in the hallway was going down, my first thought was, you just left your daughter with these people for the whole weekend, and now you're, like, criticized?
Yeah. Like, how rude. I know. We fed her. Yeah. And gave her a bed to sleep in. Right. Yeah. Very ungrateful, those people. But they're just so clueless. Like, they don't know what's happening. Actually, just a fun little tidbit. That scene that we are doing in the hallway is...
We film in this building where a lot of people live there. They're going in and out all the time. There's a lot of older people who live there. And a guy was found dead upstairs and had been dead for like three days. While you guys were there? And the coroner was waiting for us to wrap up. Oh.
so that they could go get the guy. It was crazy. Were you kind of freaked out when you were filming? Yeah, our security guy went up there because he was a police officer and someone said that they had smelled something and he went upstairs and checked it out and he was describing it to me and I was like, okay, that's enough. Yeah, crazy. So that was happening. Wow.
Yikes. I don't know. Yeah. Sorry about that. No. That's kind of a lot. Yeah. Interesting little fun fact though. I had to like say it. That is so scary. Yeah. Yeah. I would have been like, yeah, let's go. Let's wrap it up. Yeah. It was kind of weird. I was really antsy to get out of there just knowing that. Yeah. Yeah.
So, okay, so when you guys film in the hospital area, are you guys actually at a hospital or are you guys, like, on the set? Well, it depends. Sometimes we do film in a hospital, like the opening scene of the last episode when we're all laying on the grass. That was outside of St. Joseph's in Burbank. And then we have... April's hospital room is in our studio in Santa Clarita, so...
That's like, that's always there. And same with the doctor's office. Like that's always there too. So yeah.
Yeah, the hospital stuff is kind of all over. We also, like, filmed in an abandoned hospital downtown once. That's kind of scary. It's a bunch of different hospitals just acting like one. The way it's all put together looks so good because you would never know. It looks like the same hospital. I know. It totally does. Interesting. Any other Twitter questions from
No, I think that's it. But I do have one question for the Christmas episode that's coming up. Can you at least give us a hint on what the surprise is? Like, who's coming? Our grandparents. We have the Carver side of the family, our dad's side of the family, comes into town. And it's so much fun because Ed Asner is our grandpa and Marian Ross is our grandma. So it was just cool. Three days, like...
to act against these legends who like my parents talked about all the time when I was younger and like I used to watch the Mary Tyler Moore show with my dad and like happy days too so it was cool to get to you know have them as grandparents for a few days and they're so nurturing too like they are I mean Ed Asner is like hilarious I don't think I'd use nurturing as a word at the time he's just so funny and like fun to be around he's a hoot it's awesome yeah
I was actually thinking about dad's side grandparents with regards to the George and Sarah relationship. Oh. I was like, what do the, what would the dad's side of, this is how deeply I'm thinking about it. I love it. What would the dad's side of grandparents think about this relationship? Like, your son. Your other son. Your other son dating your son that's passed on. Same woman. Ex-wife. Yeah. With their daughters. That's just a. It seems.
It seems like it would be really complicated, but for some reason it really all just works. I mean, she already knows the parents. Like, we got that over with. Yeah, exactly. That's just an easy transition. Everyone knows each other. It's so easy.
Except for Uncle Stepdad. Yeah. That was awkward. Uncle Stepdad. I like how they went straight there. It's like, well, what if we date Uncle Stepdad? I was like, whoa. Kind of a nice ring to it. We just skipped a lot of steps. Yeah. So what has been your most favorite part about working on this show?
Oh, my favorite part is just working with the cast every week. It's wonderful. And I, this is my first time being a series regular on a show and it was kind of nerve wracking in the beginning when we all met, it's like, this could be a thing that we do for a really long time. And what if we don't like each other? What if like people don't get along? Um, but everyone gets along so great. So that's a wonderful part. And just seeing people's real reactions to the show and how they can relate. It's,
Yeah.
Have you found that a lot of fans, like through social media, will reach out to you and be like, I was struggling with, you know, either a family member with cancer or I'm struggling. Yes, a lot of people share their own cancer stories, whether it's them who had cancer or a loved one who has cancer. And I mean, just about everyone in the world has been touched with, you know, cancer, has known someone who is cancer.
had it um so yeah a lot of people share their stories and I do go on the Facebook page and I read what people comment and how people can be so honest on something that is so public is really nice and then you see like people relating to each other and stuff so it's it's a great thing it's cool to be on a show that um is just relatable and relevant and is an important subject that
you know, needs to be talked about and people can, you know, watch and relate. Even if, you know, a girl is in a hospital bed and she finally has a character that she can relate to. And instead of all these other, you know, female characters who, I mean, are also awesome, but you know, you can't really relate when you're in that situation. Right. Yeah. It's kind of, it's kind of a topic that there hasn't been a show that's
solely based on someone going through cancer. Maybe someone on a show was going through cancer, but it hasn't been really centered around it. We haven't really seen a show... Yeah, we're like the C word for younger. But I do love the fact that ABC Family is showing this...
you know, great series that, you know, is facing cancers, you know, has lesbian relationships, you know, Sarah and Uncle George's relationship. Like all these, you know, wide variety of issues that people might be going through that are in their demographic and they really haven't had a show where they can be like, oh, I relate to them. So it's a great thing that ABC Family is doing this.
That is my favorite part. Yeah. Yeah. I have a question. Do you guys, like, play pranks on each other on set? Um, yeah. I mean, Aisha and I will go into the hair and makeup trailer, and she has, like, this...
head of hair, like this great mane and like her curls are insane. But if you actually cut off one of her curls, you would never notice. And we kind of like, we kind of do it to freak out the hair people. Yeah.
And they'll be like, no, no, no, you can't cut your hair. And I'll grab the scissors and be like, really, really? And cut it. And you can't tell. But one time we cut off a piece of her hair and we put it on a piece of tape and we taped it to one of our grips' butt. Like you had a tail, like a little ringlet tail.
I think he went a while without realizing. And then obviously he knew who did it because no one else has that hair. Has anyone got you with anything? Um...
No. No. No one really messes with me too much. Just because you're a tough girl. Yeah. All right. Next time we want to hear about some more. You got to go. I mean, now maybe they will. Go back to work. But actually, yeah, Steven Weber messes with me a lot. Just in scenes. Like, he will try to make me laugh because he's so funny. And he knows that I'm weak. He knows my weaknesses. Like...
He knows that this is so immature, but, like, fart jokes just get me, like, every time. And so he will, like, make a noise in the middle of the scene, and I will just lose it. So he, yeah, he's a tough one. He's, like, one of my favorite scene partners, but my least favorite at the same time, because I have to keep up and, like...
Yeah. It's so hard if you're like in the middle of the scene. You're like, oh, I forgot to do it again. It's so hard. And then when someone's stomach rumbles, like during the dinner scene, that's so like everyone just loses it. I don't think we've ever gone through a dinner scene where people don't end up laughing. And then it gets to the point where it's like, okay, you have to pull yourself together because you are at work and
And you cannot laugh like this. It just like gets out of hand. Especially like two weeks ago when you guys had that dinner scene with like everybody there. Oh my gosh. And Ford and Brenna. Yeah. Or Ford and Greer. Like the whole bunch was there. And Steven Weber was there. So. Like so fun. Everyone's laughing. Yeah. Perfect. Well, we do a thing on here called predictions. Okay. So we'll get into our predictions in a minute.
I know you can't really spill anything, but we'll give you ours. Okay, I wish I could. And now, your After Buzz TV predictions. Okay, so because this is the finale for summer and we don't come back for six months, give us your predictions for the next episode in six months from now. I'm like, you go, you go. Wait, are we including the Christmas episode?
Because that one's going to be at Christmas. Oh, okay. Or after. That episode and the one after. Okay, I think that Leo is... Of course you think it's going to be Leo. Every section I think I have ever made is about Leo. I love Leo. I think Leo will go get the surgery. Because he saw his parents at the end of this episode at the hospital looking at something.
And then he calls April and then we, it ends, which made me very upset. It was a terrible way to leave me for six months.
But I think that he's going to decide to have the surgery and go in and do it for her. Okay. Michelle? I think the same thing. I think Leo will probably get better after his surgery, even though they said he has a small percentage of not doing so well. But I think he might come back. I also think that Sarah and George will start dating, and the girls will find out some awkward things.
Like, they'll just, I don't know, like, maybe they'll walk in on them, like, make me out or something. Like, what happened with, like, Brennan? I was going to say, Brennan and Claire should walk in. Yeah, that would be good. And then close the door and then walk out and then knock. There you go. I'm going to predict, like you guys said, that Leo is going to get the surgery. I also predict that Dominic is going to feel, like, a complete D and come back and apologize for...
being such a jerk to April and even though she did sleep around whatever they were broken up once once once with Leo like like Beth said what happens in a funeral home stays in a funeral home and that luckily for them was in a funeral home where else where else um
I predict that we're also going to see Natalie Ortiz come back and, you know, she could be the bone marrow match. Maybe she'll stop being... Change her ways. Yeah. Those are all really good. I feel like I need, like, a poker face, like, in my sunglasses or something. People are going to be watching this and, like, popping out. I know. I just went with the constant smile. She's like, sure, whatever you guys say. It's going to happen.
Alright, Michelle, let everyone know where they can find you on social media. Well, you can find me on Twitter and Instagram at underscore Michelle Fee. And you guys can find me on Twitter at Kristen Strange and Instagram at Kristen Aubrey Strange. And where can they find you, Haley? You can find me on Twitter. I'm at Hales Bells. H-A-L-E-S-B-E-L-L-S. And that's the same for Instagram, too. So...
You can find me on Instagram and on Twitter at HeatherJoySmith. And thanks, everybody, for the wonderful season. I'm so sad it's over, but I can't wait for six months from now. Yeah, me too. So we will be back here in six months from now. And thank you so much, Haley, for joining us tonight. Thanks for having me. Yay!
