He earned his bachelor's degree in 1941 from the University of Missouri in Columbia. From 1941 to 1946, he was a chemist at Mallinckrodt Chemical Co. in St. Louis, where he worked on the Manhattan Project and received a patent for his work on the purification of uranium. He entered Washington University School of Medicine in 1946 and received his M.D. degree in 1950, then took a one-year internship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, followed by an anesthesiology residency in Joliet. After three years of naval service in California, he established his home in Decatur.  Dr. Wibbels was the first anesthesiologist in D. and was in private practice at D. Memorial Hospital from 1957 until his retirement in 1986. He was instrumental in establishing the Inhalation Therapy Department at DMH, as well as the School of Nurse Anesthesia, which continues today. He was a chief of service of anesthesiology, served on the DMH Patient Care Committee, was a patron of D. Memorial Foundation, and president of the Macon County Medical Society in 1983. He was a member of the Country Club of D., D. Club, American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, and American Society of Anesthesiologists. He married Dotty(Gammy) in December of 1943, in Missouri.  Surviving are his wife; daughter, My Mom of Springfield; son, My Uncle Larry of Park Hills, Mo.; sister and her husband Lincoln, Neb.  He was preceded in death by his parents and older sister.  From the Herald & Review (IL)  Wanna try MAGIC SPOON cereal?
