The Big Bang Theory, the longest-running comedy on television and the number-one show in the United States last year, will end after this year. The star of the program, Jim Parsons, declined a $50 million offer to do two more seasons. The show is an example of a situational comedy—a type of show that was most popular in the 1980s and 1990s, but which is less relevant in the age of Netflix.
