As of July 2021, there are a total of 153,210 expired domains on the internet. Acquiring defunct or existing (but not currently live) domains can boost your SEO results.

There are downsides to acquiring expired domains, especially if you do it wrong. If it is done right, you can use an expired domain for SEO purposes.

When you purchase an expired URL, you can collect some of that traffic for your site. Many old websites may have the traffic that you need for your current site, including the potentially of many aged inbound links. You don't have to do as much work building links (either directly or through various link building services)) if you buy old domain names from someone who was trying to get a high rank. Existing PageRank, Domain Authority, or Domain Rating means.

Google will treat your site with more authority and rank you higher for specific search terms. Redirecting old links to a new page where there is no content overlap can send that page into the Google Sandbox (at least for a time). An expired domain gives you an SEO head start, so you don't need to build a site on a new domain.
