The first thing to understand about a Google penalty is that it is not a bug in the Google algorithm, or an indicator that your site is in any way 'broken'. Your website is not blacklisted and you do not have to repent for any sins. A Google penalty is simply an issue with the internal linking structure of your website that the search engine has decided needs attention through a message such as "This site may be hacked or compromised."

A step-by-step guide to getting back on track when Google has detected website unnatural link profiles, unnatural link building, blog networks, reciprocal links or other types of penalties.

There are many reasons for getting a Google penalty and they vary wildly. We know this because I coached hundreds of webmasters around the world over the course of 10 years. The penalty could be stemming from duplicate content, links from affiliate programs or link networks, or even from scraping content from other websites. It may have come out of nowhere and it may seem as though its set in concrete. However, there are steps you can take to resolve your Google penalty.
