Welcome to FireDEV Episode 45! In this episode, we dive into the world of game development and middleware technology with our special guest, Parker Won, the founder of Abstract Middleware.

Parker shares his journey of founding and launching Abstract Software, Inc., also known as Abstract, a video game middleware company that offers a powerful scripting language designed to optimize gameplay development workflows. He discusses how Abstract provides near-C performance seamlessly integrated into any game engine, without sacrificing efficiency or customizability.

We explore the unique features of Abstract, including support for hot-reloading, visual scripting, and text-based scripting, all working harmoniously together. Parker invites listeners to check out Abstract at abstractsoft.net and get in touch if they or their teams are interested in working with them.

Prior to Abstract, Parker had an impressive career in the game development industry. He spent four years at 343 Industries as a Game Developer (Software Engineer), where he played a crucial role in the development of Halo Infinite. Parker was responsible for designing, implementing, and shipping core systems that drove the AI characters in the game. He shares insights into the Encounter Behavior Tree System, Action System, and other essential components that brought the AI characters to life.

During his internship at 343 Industries, Parker worked on developing a groundbreaking system that allowed AI characters in the Halo game series to interact spontaneously with synchronized animations. He overcame performance constraints and improved readability by introducing a novel location-to-event multi-map. This innovation revolutionized the way AI characters interacted with each other in the game.

Parker's passion for technology extends beyond the gaming realm. He also had the opportunity to intern at SpaceX, where he utilized his skills in data analytics and IT. As a Supply Chain Management Data Analytics/IT Intern, he conducted thorough data analysis using Python, SQL, and Tableau. Parker's work helped evaluate team and individual planner performance within the Supply Chain Management Division.

Join us in this episode of FireDEV as we explore Parker Won's incredible journey in the game development industry, the birth of Abstract Middleware, and the impact of his innovations on the gaming world. It's an episode filled with inspiration, technical insights, and a glimpse into the future of game development. Don't miss it!
