Deep Dive

Key Insights

What did Cristiano Ronaldo say about Manchester United's struggles?

Cristiano Ronaldo stated that Manchester United's problems are not due to the coaches. He compared the situation to a sick fish in an aquarium, suggesting that the underlying issues remain unresolved regardless of managerial changes.

Why is Bukayo Saka's absence a significant blow for Arsenal?

Bukayo Saka is out for more than two months following hamstring surgery, which is a major setback for Arsenal. Saka is a key player, and his absence could derail Arsenal's title challenge unless they find a suitable replacement or adapt their system effectively.

What is the controversy surrounding Tamworth's ticket prices for their FA Cup game against Spurs?

Tamworth has increased ticket prices to £42 for their FA Cup game against Spurs, up from the usual £20 for adults and £4 for under-10s. This has sparked criticism, especially for the high cost for children and elderly fans, with concerns about affordability for local supporters.

How does Ange Postecoglou view the pressure on him as Spurs manager?

Ange Postecoglou does not feel additional pressure despite Spurs losing six of their last ten games. He remains focused on building a successful team and believes the current difficulties are temporary.

What is Cristiano Ronaldo's analogy for Manchester United's problems?

Ronaldo compared Manchester United's issues to a sick fish in an aquarium, explaining that simply removing and treating the fish won't solve the problem if the aquarium itself is the cause. He emphasized that the club's deeper structural issues need addressing.

Hello, hello, hello. Happy Sunday, my friends. Welcome to another Andy Goldstein Talks Football Daily podcast with me, your host, Andy Goldstein. Now, there's only one place to start, and that's by looking into a massive day in the Premier League as we bring you two more live and exclusive commentaries across the Talks Football network. It doesn't matter where we are now, but it matters where we are end of May, and we're working towards that, and...

with all the belief that we can do it. It's another game where City have failed to raise themselves to the levels they know they are capable of, but it's starting to feel as if there is no way out. It's Manchester City 1, Everton 1. I will not give up. I want to be here. I want to be here. I want to do it. And with the situations that we have, we have to do it. And now we go to Leicester, which has been difficult. Angles tight. How has he scored that?

I firmly believe that we'll get through this and we'll come out stronger and we'll create the team we want to be.

Over on TalkSport, you can hear Man City's trip to Leicester now on half two, while Spurs face a tougher way trip to Wolves on TalkSport 2 at 3pm. Spurs, of course, will be looking to move back inside the top half of the Premier League after losing six of their last ten matches to increase the pressure on Big Edge.

Let's hear from the Spurs gaffer now who's been speaking to the Moose ahead of today's game. Two weeks ago you said your job was more, or the job of a football manager was more difficult than that of a prime minister. Can I just say with that, obviously sarcasm and irony is lost in this country because people actually believe that I was serious when I said that there are far more difficult jobs than being a manager or even being a

the Prime Minister of the country. I was just going to say that you followed up by saying because the Prime Minister has a phone every five minutes. Yeah, which was the sarcasm and irony. Do you feel that in those two weeks since you've said that, that maybe there is a different way that people would look at you now in terms of the Spurs fan base because you've lost four and five and it's become more difficult, this job?

No, it's the same. Look, I keep saying fan bases. They love their football club, they care about their football club and they obviously want their football club to succeed. And then they make those feelings and emotions. So, you know, I haven't felt anything but support since I've been here. I still feel that support's there. I'll keep doing what I think is the right thing to get success to this football club. That doesn't change anything.

The task is difficult at the moment because of our situation, but like most things that are fairly difficult to traverse, it's only temporary. We'll get through it and we'll come out stronger. Respectfully, do you feel under any pressure? And conversely, is this the most difficult time you've had in terms of results in your managerial career? No, no. It is what it is. That's not what kind of motivates me or drives me. I've...

My motivation to do what I do is to try and create teams that win things and have success and make an impact and that doesn't really change. I'll keep doing what I'm doing and it doesn't add any pressure or I don't feel any extra anxiety about anything.

I firmly believe that we'll get through this and we'll come out stronger and we'll create the team we want to be. We've sat before and I've asked you many times about the winning of a trophy. You've always said the winning of a trophy isn't necessarily the be all and end all. It's the start, the foundations of the house you're trying to build. But does it feel now that if you go on and win a trophy this year now, that it will prove that everything you've gone through over the last maybe six weeks, two months, whether

Only if it's sustainable, if it's not a one-off, yeah, that doesn't change. Like I said, I get where people obviously kind of look at my situation and probably think, well, geez, he needs to do something or else, you know, he's in trouble. But I don't think that way. It's not how I'm wired. I'm not sort of concerned about that aspect of this role. Like I said, what excites me about this role and what I love about doing what I do is the...

the possibilities that you can create something special and that's what I'm going to try and do. TalkSport Daily. And a reminder, you can hear Spurs against Wolves on TalkSport 2 from 3pm with all the build-up from half past two.

Moving across Northunder now, and the Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has confirmed that Bakayosaka will be out for, and I quote, more than two months after surgery on his hamstring. Throughout the day, we discussed how the Gunners could cope without their star man. I said many weeks, so I think it will be more than two months. I don't know exactly how much longer. I think it will depend, you know, how that scar tissue starts to heal, the first week or so, mobility of that tissue.

Let's see. It's very difficult to say. Saka being out for Arsenal, for me, I said it yesterday on the show, it's going to be a huge blow for them. There are a few options. I think Martinelli has proved that he can do it. He did really well against Palace. You know, he's definitely an option. Jesus can play out there as well. Sterling when he's fit.

Look, there are a number of... You could change the system. You could probably go with Havertz and Jesus up front and maybe play a narrow right winger. For me, I think Saka missing for so long. If they don't go out and find a replacement, I think that's the end of their title challenge. I think that's the end of their title challenge. I think the replacement of B is going to be the team, you know, and that unit in particular and...

Having minutes together and asking different things and doing that. There were moments that it flowed really well. There were moments that we can still have some work to do there and improve it and adapt to the qualities of the individuals. I'm certain that we're going to do that. I think that if Arsenal can go into the market, they really should. It would be such a boost to the supporters and maybe the squad itself.

the board, the powers that be, say, you know what, let's go for it here and spend relatively big this month. We have to rely on the team. That's the biggest strength of us. We never rely on an individual scoring 25, 30 goals and we have managed to

be very, very competitive still and we're going to manage to do that. They need something, Arsenal, to try to claw back some of those points that they've lost out to Liverpool. But look, at the moment, Liverpool look an unstoppable force. Well, there are options for Arsenal and I would expect them to chance their arm and try it. And I think if they can pull off a move...

it would lift everybody at the club and maybe give them that little bit of a jolt, a momentum jolt that's the springboard for a pretty special end to the season. Let's see. Let's see what they do. But I would love them to, because it just sends that message that Arsenal mean business and that we have not given up on the title this season. We're going for it. TalkSport Daily.

Now looking ahead to tomorrow's Premier League action, we bring you our final commentary of 2024. Ah, as Man United lose, excuse me, host Newcastle. The only good thing the club have got is their history because the present day is absolutely turgid. And another desperate and damaging defeat for Manchester United. It will be a long journey and this moment will be really tough. Four defeats in seven in the Premier League now.

for the new Manchester United head coach. To a man, they're just rubbish. This is the worst Manchester United team in a generation. The manager of Manchester United cannot be never, no matter what, comfortable. How are Newcastle in fifth and United where they are? How are Bournemouth in sixth and United where they are? There's no time to lose focus on what's really important, so hopefully the lads will keep their standards. Alexander Isak!

In amongst all the league games, we've got the Carabao Cup. Semi-final, we want to do well in that. The FA Cup, we want to do well in that. So there's no respite for us.

Join Adrian Dunne with all the build-up from seven ahead of kick-off at eight. And ahead of the game, United legend Cristiano Ronaldo has had his say on what's going on at the club, saying the problem is not the coaches. Not surprised they'll get their own cars there now, doesn't he? They are currently 14th in the Premier League, and before we hear from the manager Ruben Amram and Tony Cascarino, here's what Ronaldo had to say at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai. Another desperate and damaging defeat for Manchester United. The scale

I say this one year and a half ago, the problem is not the coaches. It's like, I always give this example, I will try right now to see if you're going well. It's like the Aquarius. If you have the fishing inside and he's sick and you take him out, you fix the problem. And if you put it again in Aquarius, they will be sick again. And this is the problem of modern fishing.

Manchester United is the same. I know that if we don't win, I know that every manager is in danger and I like that. Four defeats in seven in the Premier League now for the new Manchester United head coach. Their problems are mounting. It's part of football to have these difficult moments. I already knew that it was going to be tough. In this moment, it's really hard. Like I said, we have to survive to have time

and then to improve the team. Do you know what is one of the biggest obstacles he's had? He can't train his players. There's too much football. There's too many games. So he can't put in the groundwork that needs to be done on the training ground to get these players absolutely spot on. I managed, but I didn't train. So they need time to train. They are changing completely. The way of playing is really hard on them. It's really hard.

on the staff also to pass all the information and then when you don't have results, it's even harder. The problem is not only the coach. It's much more than that. And do you think that is still the case at Old Trafford? 100%. 18 games, minus three goal difference. How can Man United have a minus three goal difference? They've had eight losses, six wins.

How can they have such a poor return so far this season? This is a club that's got one of the biggest revenues in world football. In this moment, we just have to survive. I start this job and you start with the team, the new idea without any time to train with a lot of games, tough games. And it's a long journey, like I said,

They need a lot, Manchester United. And I think he probably knows the way he needs to do things, but he's going to need a two-week period of actually working with the team on a daily basis. Premier League is a different beast. It's a different league. It's

They overpay for everybody. They pay wages that are beyond the norm. Absolutely.

Anthony was overpaid for. They've gone down the road of overpaying for players, giving them two bigger contracts, and then clubs can't take them off their books. You have to have a line in the sand with regards to wages and transfer fees, which they haven't. Manchester United left languishing in lower mid-table. Wolves 2 for 10 men of Manchester United 0. I hope the best for Manchester United because it's some club that...

I still love it.

And we end today's podcast, you think, with non-league Tamworth who have come under fire after charging as much as £42 for a ticket for their upcoming FA Cup game against Spurs. A normal ticket is £20 for an adult and just £4 for an under-10. But the club have put the prices up ahead of the game next month. Darren Ambrose and Majestic discuss this on the Saturday session. I think they've made an error. I'm in two minds about this. I think they've made an error in the under-10s. £29 for an under-10 and £10 for an under-10.

Over 66 is maybe could be decreased. There's a few things that they could do. The members or the season ticket holders, if they do that at Tamworth, should get a discount, a discounted price for that.

But then the other side of it is this is a generational game in terms of how often is Tamworth going to get a top Premier League side to come to their place? Why can't they cash in on it? Now that is going to get a mixed reaction. I know that. But very rarely, and you pay for the product. On the flip side, if it was at Spurs, I'd expect the prices to be less because you're paying for the product. Spurs supporters who go there week in, week out are going to go to watch Tamworth. I

I think the other side of it is no replays. So if somehow Tamworth, I say somehow, that could actually happen, by the way, at the moment, take Spurs to a draw, there's no revenue to be made on the replay. There's certain things that could happen, as I said, definitely reduce the kids because that's not right. You're a family, you want to take your kids to watch a top Premier League team, do it for free. Put the kids in for free under 10s, even if you're going to keep the £42 for the main ticket, which...

is steep, is probably a little bit overpriced. But I go back to these clubs are not run by billionaires, millionaire billionaires. They run week in, week out, and they're trying to cash in to keep the club running for the next however many years. Which makes sense. And we did ask Tamworth Football Club for a statement

or to put someone to join us. This was their chance to reply. But they told us they will not be providing either at this time. Look, we're not here to batter Tamworth. No, no, no. And I'm not here to stick up for Tamworth. I am. Go on, what's your view? I'm here to say that what could be done and should be done to ensure that they capitalise on this situation as well, and treat their supporters fairly...

Season ticket holders should be unaffected. Yeah. Every season ticket holder at Tamworth should pay the same price for that game. Yeah. You know, does it come with their ticket? I don't know how it works, et cetera. Yeah, exactly. Right? But if there's people going there week in, week out, the old chap, Ron, yeah? 75, he's on his own. This Christmas, he's had to choose whether to heat or eat. That's the reality. Yeah. For a lot of people listening to this station right now, they are choosing between heating and eating. Yeah.

and his one getaway, his one escape, is watching Tamworth on the weekend. He goes there. He knows everyone. Hello, Ron. Ron comes. Hello, Ron. Do you want a pint, Ron? Everyone knows Ron. He goes down there. He's looking at his game. It's the biggest game that they've had

And they're asking him to pay another 20 plus pounds. Yeah, 24. 24 pounds. 23 pound more, yeah. Which could be his food consumption for a week. Or, you know, the heating. I think it's a disgrace in this current... Yes, Tamworth absolutely should and deserve to benefit and reap the rewards of a big club coming to their...

to play. Now, is there something to be said? And this is where we need to support the lower league clubs and all the way down the grassroots. Is there something to be said in terms of how revenue split or whatever Tottenham Hotspur should go? You know what, Tamworth? As a gesture, here's something. Yes. Well, that's it for another podcast. If you think that's for listening on socials, we'll get your podcast on. Make sure you hit the subscribe button.
