Talk Sport Daily. Hello, happy Tuesday, my friends. Yeah, Tuesday. Welcome to another Andy Goldstein Talk Sport Daily podcast with me, your host, Andy Goldstein. Don't forget to check me out on Drive today, 4pm alongside Fingermajiggy.
Has anyone seen Jason Gundy? Well, we'll get into the game at Stamford Bridge in a bit. But we start with all the reaction to the transfer deadline day as the window slammed shut. It didn't slam shut. It's not a real window on TalkSport. Cue chief football correspondent Alex the Crooky Monster Crook, posse chairman Darren McCantney. I've met him actually, he's not that posh. And Mr. Transfer Deadline Day himself, Jim Fantastic White.
It's all happening out there and we are right across the lot. West Ham are going to be busy today. James Ward-Prowse coming back. Probably the biggest story on transfer deadline day. Matthias Tell looks like Tottenham will succeed where Manchester United failed. Jao Felix from Chelsea to AC Milan has been confirmed on a straight loan basis. These people are useless. They're useless. There's no question about it. Mark Gahee
not for sale in the next few hours. I've had to choose somewhere where I feel like my style of football is suited to and can help them and help me rediscover and improve as a player. Rashford is a good player. I think he'll go and perform at Aston Villa because he has little choice. Aston Villa have completed their own signing of Marco Asenjo from PSG. Evan Ferguson is now reunited with the man who gave him his senior debut as he joins Graham Potter at West Ham. Axel de Sassi to Tottenham is off
Axel de Sassi to Aston Villa, very much on. I haven't seen a forward move this window that I think would have improved Arsenal's forward line. Manchester United's business, despite the desperation for a striker, seems to be all done for January. I just don't know if anybody wants to go to Man United. One of those late ones is indeed Nico Gonzalez. Two Manchester City official confirmation just been sent to me. Four and a half year contract. Tears tell. Joining Tottenham Hotspur, it is a lone...
with an option to buy and that is one of the stories of Deadline Day. We are coming up to the 11 o'clock deadline folks. It's 11 o'clock and the window is now shut.
But there are always bound to be some late ones. There are, and one of those late ones is indeed Nico Gonzalez. Two Manchester City official confirmation just been sent to me. Four-and-a-half-year contract for the Porto midfielder. It's a €60 million fee, so pretty much the release clause. It's a fourth signing in the window for Manchester City. £180 million has been spent. Gonzalez...
has told Manchester City it's the perfect opportunity for him at this stage of his career, 23 years of age, wants to test himself in England, and he says there's no better club than Manchester City to do that. So Manchester City getting the deal done just in the nick of time before the 11 o'clock deadline. Unreal. I'm still amazed by this Manchester City situation. Ben, before I hit the break, tell me. I've got something to tell you. I don't know whether you intended to say tell me, but I've got something to tell you. Should I be shocked at what is it about?
I'M NOT GOING TO TELL YOU. I'M GOING TO TELL YOU. I'M GOING TO TELL YOU. I THOUGHT YOU INTENDED THAT TO I THOUGHT YOU INTENDED THAT TO SET ME UP WITH A DOUBLE TELL SET ME UP WITH A DOUBLE TELL PUN. PUN. MATEAS TELL JOINING TOTNAM HOT MATEAS TELL JOINING TOTNAM HOT SPUR. SPUR. IT IS A LOAN WITH AN OPTION TO IT IS A LOAN WITH AN OPTION TO BUY. BUY. AS ALEX HAS ALREADY ALLUDED TO, AS ALEX HAS ALREADY ALLUDED TO, 55 MILLION EURO. 55 MILLION EURO. THAT DEAL IS DONE. THAT DEAL IS DONE. NO DEAL SHEET. NO DEAL SHEET. HE HAD ALREADY PASSED THE HE HAD ALREADY PASSED THE
is one of the stories of deadline day. Alex, you're coming in on the back of that. There is a deal sheet in at Everton for Carlos Alcaraz, so they're going to get a bit longer to get that deal completed as their deadline day acquisition. Stefan, one observation I want to make to you. I'm keen to get your take on this. All right, it's a £300 million-plus spend at the moment compared to £96-odd million in January last year.
But one of the features this year is the age of the players that the clubs are spending on. How significant is that? Yeah, I think it's becoming harder, I think, to trade players over 25. And I think it started a lot with Chelsea's view as to almost ruling out signings when they get to a certain age limit.
And now, if you're not Saudi, you are basically not buying a player over 25. And even, I mean, I think City, even if you take out Marouche or Mahmoud,
Even that is almost an outlier. So most of the signings that you're seeing traded are between 19 and kind of 21. So I think it's becoming harder to sell older players and the value that you're getting for them. We saw it with Arsenal bidding 40 for Ali Watkins, who's 29. And we've seen it in terms of the fixed fee for Rashford. Even if it works, Rashford goes for 40. Now, we know that that's partly because of the size of the wages.
But there's definitely a trend there that says we are not paying big transfer fees for players who may only have four or five years left. Business achievement or sporting achievement? What's top of the list? Sporting. When I bought a football club, it was to have fun. Little did I know it would make me poor. LAUGHTER
But no, sporting, you of course want to be successful. I talk about the product and people hate that word, but it is the reality. It's a product that you want your fans to enjoy what they see. You want people talking about your team. You want to play the right style of football. Yeah. And you've got to pay your bills. Sure. So ideally, you want to be successful, but you want to also play or train.
So another deadline day done. The transfer window is closed until the fun begins all over again in the summer. The TalkSport website has all of the deals and some that you may have missed, including Jeffrey Schlupp leaving Crystal Palace to join Celtic, the Premier League winner with Leicester in 2016.
Southampton loaned out their goalkeeper Gavin Bozzunu to standard Liège. We had Kelechi Iniacho returning to English football. He's joined Middlesbrough from Sevilla after not scoring a goal in Spain. Rob Holding, remember him? Well, he's still playing football. He's moved to Sheffield United from Crystal Palace.
And a name a blaster in the past here, Michy Batshuayi, a Premier League icon for one reason or another. He has left Galatasaray to join Frankfurt. All of those deals and more can be found at TalkSport.com. TalkSport Daily. Now on to this evening's action at the bridge where
where Chelsea were up against London rivals West Ham. Who could have predicted that score? I'm saying that in a generic way because at the time of recording this, no one knew the score. Well, on a night where the transfer deadline takes the spotlight nationwide, a second half comeback from Chelsea steals three points at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea beat West Ham for the third time in a row to go into the top four above Manchester City and we'll hope that they put an end to their worst run of form in two years. It wasn't pretty. West Ham were good.
and arguably deserve something from the game. But it's Chelsea who take three points because of Neto's invention on the right-hand side, Palmer's drive and desire down the left-hand side to get the winner, which was a deflected effort off Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Unfortunate for West Ham United.
who may well have recruited a GP, but hasn't been able to prescribe exactly the right medicine yet. I tell you what, though, they look a much better side today than they did when he walked through the door. Things may be looking up for West Ham, even if results haven't said that,
and this result certainly doesn't because it's finished Chelsea 2 West Ham 1. I think unlucky not to get anything from that game this evening. They played really well, they were leading at half-time and the goals I think were unlucky, we'll talk about the VAR in a second but the second one is a deflection. I think they played well enough to get at least a draw from the game.
I agree, I thought the biggest positive for them is that in that second half where we've seen teams of the past as we talked about drop in and try and protect they actually had three or four great positions chances second half great defending from Chelsea final ball whatever it was but they got men up the pitch they were positive they had good energy good desire
That was really impressive, backing up the Villa performance, to go to Villa and Chelsea and put in... I know they didn't win either game, but they were two really competitive performances, where it caused both the opposition lots of problems, and they've lost to a wicket deflection. Yeah, there's a lot of positives, the West Ham fans applauding the players, the players going over to the West Ham fans, the equaliser for me is a scandal, and it shows that after five and a half long painful years VAR is still rubbish,
and why fans hate it as well. They've decided, VAR, to spend a long time forensically analysing whether there's a touch in the middle which would mean Kukure is offside and the goal shouldn't stand.
I mean, forget all that. There's a blatant foul on Jared Bowen by Levi Caldwell at the beginning of the move that they've decided is too early in the phase of play, so they're not going to include it. I mean, Atwell should have given it, the referee should have given it, but I just think it just shows to me all the flaws of VAR. Do you know what, there's so many reasons or the points that we could talk on. I'm so sick of it. It's so frustrating.
They're going to have to live with it and hopefully they'll get one back, but yeah, it seemed a bit unfair and the deflection was even crueler because that's just...
one of those things you can't do anything about. Enzo, to win a game after being behind at half-time isn't something this Chelsea team is used to. How pleasing was it to get the three points tonight? I think it already happened many times this season that we were behind and we won the game. And at the same time it happened many times already that we were winning and we didn't win. So it's football, it's normal. The most important thing is the performance. Today was...
Graham, not the result you would have wanted tonight, but does it feel like a missed opportunity with the chances you had in the game?
I wouldn't say we missed an opportunity. I thought there was a lot to be really positive about from our perspective. I thought the performance was strong, I thought the spirit of the team was really, really good. I thought we were intelligent in terms of what we were trying to do from a defensive perspective. We can improve a little bit ourselves with the ball, but still created opportunities. And we look at the chances in the game, it was a relatively even game, I think.
Possession-wise, of course, Chelsea have more, but without creating massive amounts against us. We feel a little bit unlucky with the first goal and there was a foul on Jared Bowen leading up to it. And I think sometimes you need those things to go your way. And we still could have a really big chance with Mo at the end to probably deservedly get a point.
Picture this. You're in the garage, hands covered in grease, just finished tuning up your engine with a part you found on eBay. And you realize, you know what? I could also use new brakes. So where do you go next?
Back to eBay. You can find anything there. It's unreal. Wipers, headlights, even cold air intakes. It's all there. And you've got eBay guaranteed fit. You order a part and it doesn't fit, send it back. Simple as that. Look, DIY fixes can be major. Doesn't matter if it's just maintenance or a major mod. You got it.
especially when things are guaranteed to fit. So when you dive into your next car project, start with eBay. All the parts you need at prices you'll love. Guaranteed to fit every time. eBay. Things people love.

Now, Myles Lewis Skelly celebrated his first Arsenal goal by appearing to mock Erling Haaland as they turned the tables on Man City at the Emirates. Ironically, Martin Keown urged some caution when it comes to celebrations whilst his old club is still building. Of course, Martin Keown was the fellow that nearly smashed Ruven Islor's face off after Van Islor missed a penalty. Pot and kettle comes to mind, Martin. It's this tit-for-tat stuff, isn't it? You know, where players...
you know this thing about being humble and then he's copying the celebration of Harland you know what you've got to remember he's got to be able to score that goal first I know that we're driving this narrative to discuss this Jim but this Lewis Skelly is an outstanding player what he did to arrive in that situation to have the confidence to be there to then take advantage of that the skill set the technique brilliant yeah he can probably celebrate how he wants
but obviously Arteta doesn't like that. What do you make of it? The meditation type pose a la Haaland. Yeah, but these two teams have been neck and neck, haven't they, for the last two seasons, the best two teams in the Premier League. But that's a thumbs up, are you okay with that kind of thing? So there's lots of individual competitions that take place, aren't there? Obviously we had it with, back in the day, you know, I was giving it to Van Nistelrooy, wasn't I? So, you know, it happens, you know, people make comments, it's human nature, but
But obviously I think Arsenal just need to put a lid on it and the manager's trying to do that and the media will go after it and it's a shame because, you know, I say Lewis Skelly was absolutely magnificent. Now many eyebrows were raised when Manchester United starting XI was announced for the clash with Crystal Palace with Cobby Mainhew, defensive midfielder, apparently playing up top despite
Despite some odd decisions and post-match comments, Simon Floppy had, oh, I don't dye my hair blonde with a lemon, but I really do Jordan. He's standing by Amram for now. I've seen some bad performances here this season, but this, I think, is up there. It tops the lot. Manchester United, nil. Crystal Palace, two. Amram has a curious conundrum. Clearly he doesn't. I mean, Hoyland was appalling last week against Fulham.
So the fact is, you either patronise the player to build his confidence up. If he can't score goals, he can hold the ball up. This kid can't do either at this moment in time. And they've got two players standing, sitting on a bench in Xerxe and Hoyland that have cost the club 130 million quid, best part of, that at this moment in time are not worth...
because he can't even get in the side. You're putting a central midfield player up top as some sort of mechanism to create an outcome in a game at home at Old Trafford, and you're scratching your head and thinking, what is that about? Amrim, to my mind, will find his way through this conundrum. He's doing...
everything is for a reason and I understand this reason is difficult to see and it's difficult to see why he wants to put himself in the way of the deconstruct of his control of a Man United and the deconstruct of his authority in that dressing room. Well, I don't think he's a fool. Amarim, you know, I like certain things he does because he wants to put himself up for scrutiny all the time because he says so many things and he's dancing to the tune of the media at this moment in time by saying so many different things because he's a
He's manna for heaven. He'll say whatever he feels like saying for whatever reason he feels like saying it. I don't think they'll fire him. I think ultimately, if he gets, if it's so dreadful that they'll be forced into a situation. But I think that you'll see Amirim, if he is indeed what we think he is, next season. On to a Mahoutif Championship derby in the North East.
Oi, Ghosn, you idiot, it's not a derby. It is a derby, you idiot. It's Barra Host and Sandlin. It's the Tees Weir Derby, if you must know. And it's got the word derby in it. Oh, yeah, point taken, mate. Apologies. Yeah, you should apologise, you f***. And O'Nian moves it wide quickly to Enzo Lefeu's touch. He's great. He's into the area. Can he produce a crossing? Dull! Giles turns into his own near the riverside. Drama here at the end. Enzo Lefeu's magical touchscreen.
He drilled in the cross and there was nothing Giles could do about it. His middles were two, Sunderland three. This touch, by the way, from Le Fay, it is absolutely exceptional. It's incredible the way that he brings it down on the first touch, drives the ball in front of him so he's got so much space and then you're thinking, "Can you pick out a pass?" Well, my word, the quality on the ball in the box

And we finish with Hawksby and Jacobs who have their own podcast, Don't You Know. It's not called Don't You Know, it's me just being a little bit sarcastic. They're talking about the legendary reggae artist Bob Marley, who is also a Spurs supporter. I was watching the documentary when Bob Marley came to Britain. Really excellent. Yeah, I've watched it. You all know this. I didn't realise. Did you know he was a Spurs fan? Yes, I did know. Danny will tell you. That's right. Mad for football, of course, and a Spurs fan. They all are, Andy. Anybody who's any good in the
world I do think Exodus was about people leaving after another disappointing home performance that's right leaving 10 minutes before the end that's what if you listen to the words it is about leaving 10 minutes before the end when you're 3-0 I think you'll find Spurs fans are not like that and they stay to boo they don't vacate get up stand up was originally called get up stand up sit down
That was the original title there. Brackets, stewards remix. Well, that's it, gang. Thanks for listening to Talksport. We'll be back on Drive today at 4pm in Longsor. I bet there will, of course, be another one of these Andy Gostin Talksport Daily Podcasts. That first thing in the morning is to do what you've got to do to get it. Until then, thanks for listening.
