TalkSport Daily. Hello, everyone. Happy Monday. Welcome to the TalkSport Daily podcast with me, Cain Reeves, in for Andy Goldstein, who is still celebrating that very rare away win in the Premier League for Manchester United. He is back on drive today from 4pm with Darren Bent, and he'll be back on the TalkSport Daily tomorrow with the fun boy, Jason Cundey. Let's start with the fallout from that game at Craven Cottage, where United scraped to a victory against Fulham.
And well, Ruben Amorim, he made the headlines again with his post-match comments aimed at Marcus Rashford. You'll hear those very shortly. The Manchester United fans have been chanting Ruben Amorim's name. He celebrates his 40th birthday tomorrow and that is indeed...
This is not Man United that necessarily turned a corner but it is a first clean sheet in 14 games all competitions for Man United and it is a wow when
What we're doing is, and I don't know if this is the right or wrong thing to do, but you can't help it, you judge Manchester United, whatever season it is, in the context of their history, of winning titles repeatedly and going deep in Champions Leagues, and maybe that's unfair on subsequent managers, but that's the way it is, because it is... But there's also, Adrian, you know, there is also the amount they spend...
they're right up there. It's not like Ferg has left and now they spend less money. They're sixth in the list or they're seventh. They're still top of the list or second. They're right up there. And it's their recruitment which has put them in this situation. It's nothing to do with the managers that have come and gone. Most of it is to do with the quality of individuals that they've selected to bring to the football club on contracts, by the way, and on money that is way above their station.
way above their station and this is the problem that they now find themselves where they got players look at Rashford's situation where he has this excess wage that nobody else in Europe can afford really even PSG probably can't do his money and they're gonna have to suffer that so they're still gonna loan this player out who could possibly be their best defensive player and pay another club for him to play for them it's crazy football's crazy though isn't it from a Fulham point of view
I was going to say to you at half time, will Marco Silva possibly regret the fact that he didn't get, his team didn't get an advantage in that first half because they dominated, I felt, the first half. They had all the chances. United didn't really have any, but they couldn't get a goal from those chances. So I just felt that they may regret that and so it proved. And I don't know why things were different. Was it because of things Man United did that stopped Fulham being as good in the second half? Yeah, I thought Man United were quicker
quicker to the ball, you know, and they were faster to situations that Fulham were creating. They certainly blocked up the right side where Robinson was coming down, sorry, Fulham's left side and Man Utd's right side. They managed to curtail that. So, you know, Amarillo done some good jobs at half-time. He sorted out a few issues that were going on. But this, you know, I've seen Fulham win here a couple of times this year and that by, they wasn't at their best tonight. And I'll be interested to see Marco's interview after because I
I think he will say we weren't as good as we normally were tonight. I think they were just off it. Talk Sport Daily. The headlines again made, though, by Ruben Amorim with his post-match press conference comments. It's not good news for Marcus Rashford because here Amorim suggests that he would rather put his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach on the bench than their 350 grand a week player. It's the same situation for every player.
If you do the maximum, if you do the right things, we can use every player. And you can see it today on the bench, we miss a little bit like pace to go, to change the game, to move some pieces, but I prefer like that. I will put Vital before I put a player that don't give the maximum every day.
I will not change in that department.
Tottenham lose again, Spurs 1 Leicester 2, Spurs day 15th and have now lost incredibly 13 league games this season. Loud chants against Daniel Levy throughout the second half and it just gets worse and worse for Spurs and oh my the pressure now is going to just mount on Ange Postacoglu, another terrible day for Spurs but what an afternoon for Leicester City, they win, they
they end a streak of losing seven games in a row in the Premier League, and the victory takes them out of the bottom three. They're now 17th in the table, a point above Wolves. Spurs took the lead in the first half, a wonderful cross from the right-hand side from Pedro Polo, Richarlison heading home from close range, then Leicester scored twice,
in four minutes in the second half Jamie Vardy tapping home from close range and then El Canoose who was Leicester's best player throughout the whole game with a wonderful strike from just outside the box a beautiful curling finish into the bottom corner Tottenham 1 Leicester 2. The reality of sport and football at the moment is that you know the judging is you know
constant and it's now and you know where we are in the league is obviously nowhere near good enough and that's a reflection on me and my coaching and what I'm doing but you know I keep saying that I am you know really positive about the future of this group of players I just really think that you know once we get some players back and they get some help that's even this year that I
Some chance there at the end of the game, some boos as well. What do your message be to the Tottenham fans that are driving home from the game now listening to Talk Sport? Hard for me to put it this way. If I was a supporter of Tottenham, I'd be disappointed with the way we're going at the moment as well. But my role within that is to try and change that mood and, like I said, try and support the players to make sure that come Thursday night again we're at home, that we can create a good game.
create an environment where hopefully, like I said, the opportunities that still exist this season, we can capitalise on. And Pastor Coghlu remaining defiant. He says there is still a togetherness at the club, but they are 15th in the league. They've got only 24 points from 23 games. They failed to win any of their last seven matches. That is their longest winless run since 2008 in the Premier League.
And, well, is there a togetherness at Spurs? All the anger aimed at Daniel Levy. But Darren, the Spurs fan, his anger is aimed firmly at Big Ange. Wow, where on earth do we start? This football team is in free fall. Can you answer me a question? How can it be the 26th of January and we've signed a goalkeeper with 14 players injured? It's so badly mismanaged, this club. And my biggest fear now is...
that the manager hasn't got the tactical now and i'm sorry to say it the players haven't got the bottle to get them out of get themselves out of a relegation battle there's always one team well there's a lot of time one team that goes into free fall and this is tottenham hotspur and i don't know what daniel levy does tonight but
The unthinkable is thinkable. And everybody's got to stop thinking that one team's too big to go down. We are a complete...
shambles from top to bottom of a football club. And before we get reaction to the other two Premier League games on Sunday, let's hear from the victorious Leicester boss, Ruud van Nistelrooy, after the win for the Foxes moves them out of the relegation zone. You can imagine the excitement, the relief after an away win, an important away win, a difficult away win. After all, what we've been through over the last weeks, on the pitch, off the pitch, etc., etc.,
I think we stayed together, we kept working, we kept our heads down and worked hard, believing that our luck will change. And today I think the performance was strong. It was a lot of heart there, a lot of spirit, and I think it changed our luck.
It's finished Aston Villa won West Ham won the way Aston Villa started the contest it looked like it could have been a rout when Jacob Ramsey gave the home side the lead a lovely bit of link-up play with Ollie Watkins just outside the area before Jacob Ramsey slotted the ball into the bottom right corner but as the half or on Villa lost control
the ball into the back of the net of course coming into this fixture we were talking about how Villa had
had scored more headed goals than anyone else in the division, but it was the visitors who levelled proceedings with that headed goal. It has finished Aston Villa 1-1 West Ham United. Proud of the players. I think apart from maybe the first 15 minutes of the game, I thought we were quite good and got better and better. I think second half we were really, really strong. We played with personality throughout the game, tried to win the ball back high when we could, we tried to be aggressive.
We tried to attack fast and at the same time when we couldn't do that, we tried to be patient and keep the ball and wait for the right moment to attack. So in the end, it was a good point for us. Maybe we were a little bit disappointed just to come away with the point, but that probably tells you where the level of performance was. More or less, we are being competitive. We are starting the second part of the season in the league with two wins, two draws. We didn't lose.
Today, of course, we lost two points, very important for our ambition to be in the top six or top seven, top six. We are eight. But of course, still work to do and still 10 days to finish the transfer window. How we can as well finish the second part of the season when the squad with the players we can have. Finished at Selhurst Park. Crystal Palace won.
Brentford 2, a rare away win for the Bees, just their second of the season, which the travelling support are lapping up. They held on to their two-goal lead despite Palace setting up a really tense finish here. It was Bryan and Bermo who put them in front after a retaken penalty just after the hour mark. Lacroix was the man who fouled Nathan Collins in the box, it looked a bit soft,
Then Bermo missed the first, he hit the post but got a second try after encroaching inside the box and he sent Henderson the wrong way. Kevin Schade then looked to have wrapped it up with ten minutes to go, he powered home Damsgaard's cross with a wonderful header but the Palace new boy Romain Essa made it nervy, he tapped home with five minutes to go. Brentford held on though for a precious win
on the road Crystal Palace 1 Brentford 2 Thomas you said that the encroaching decision was right for the retake of the penalty what about the decision for the penalty to be given did you feel that that was correct yeah I think it was correct yeah and an away win as well a second of the season it's now back to back away wins as well so clearly you don't have a problem on the road at the moment of course not but
We know, you know, if we had two of these, you know, how can I say, in a better order than losing the first, whatever, five on the road, then no one would have talked about it. It's about the good, consistent, solid performance. And there was a good, solid performance today.
Picture this, you're in the garage, hands covered in grease, just finished tuning up your engine with a part you found on eBay. And you realize, you know what? I could also use new brakes. So where do you go next?
Back to eBay. You can find anything there. It's unreal. Wipers, headlights, even cold air intakes. It's all there. And you've got eBay guaranteed fit. You order a part and it doesn't fit, send it back. Simple as that. Look, DIY fixes can be major. Doesn't matter if it's just maintenance or a major mod. You got it. Especially when things are guaranteed to fit. So
So when you dive into your next car project, start with eBay. All the parts you need at prices you'll love. Guaranteed to fit every time. eBay. Things people love.

TalkSport Daily. Now time for a bit of in-house fighting here at TalkSport. Normally we're one big happy family, but we do love an argument like every other family does. And here is the sons, Sean Custis and TalkSport's Henry Winter, who present the Sunday edition. Funnily enough, on Sundays on TalkSport.
Having a pop at Darren Bent, the TalkSport Drive co-host. It's after the former England striker claimed that the press used to have a bias towards Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard compared to other players. Have you had any journos write naughty stuff about you and then you've met up with them? Yeah, of course, loads. Loads in this building. Henry Wintour, uh,
Custis. Really? Yeah, who's the other ones that do this? Oh dear, he's going for them now, everyone. Yeah, all of them, yeah. Probably when I was with the England side. And you speak to him? Yeah, I say, like, what's up? Right. Oh, you went Custis. You really went for him. No, no. You went like this, yeah, Henry Wynner, Custis. Nah, Custis, what did he say about you? Nah, he was alright. But I just think sometimes those guys were more favourable to the likes of the Gerrards and the Lampards. Like, I would have had to score a... 300 goals. I think to get a six...
Do you know what I mean? But no, you know, them guys are cool, man. Good job. Come on, Benny. Come on. You weren't at the Lampard and Gerrard level anyway. He had a really good career. Yeah, but England-wise, he was in and out under Capello, who never quite wondered what to do with him over that period of time. Yeah.
And I thought, as an England player, it didn't really work out. I mean, Darren was unfortunate with the timing because I remember he made his debut, I think it was against Uruguay, before 2006. You know, he wasn't included in that. Obviously, England had some terrific strikers in there. Rooney, Owen, 2008, Steve McLaren, England didn't qualify. 2010, you look at the four strikers who went, Crouch, Rooney, Defoe and Heskey.
And then, you know, I mean, Capello was talking at the time about Darren Bent's sort of all-round game was improving. So clearly he was in the frame. And I think Euro 2012 under Hodgson, he wasn't quite fit enough. So, you know, he was unfortunate. But you know what? I mean, we're fortunate to cover him from a young age. He won the Victory Shield in 1999. I mean, throughout the age group system...
He was outstanding, whether it was under-15s to under-21s. He scored consistently. I think he was unfortunate in terms that there were some very good strikers around at that time. But to make the comparison with Lampard and Gerrard, A, completely different positions.
and B, Lampard and Gerrard were leaders of their teams, whether with or without the armband, and their teams were doing particularly well at the time. I do remember him at one training session, I think it was at Colman, he's sort of ambling on, to have a quick word with Capello, because we'd always wondered whether he was going to play in this squad and then ambling off and going, I think we gave him a bit of stick for that, about the fact he was saying he wasn't fit to play. It was at a time when he was,
sort of forced his way in but it seemed Capello had lost a bit of faith in him I think I probably did write something about that and though he didn't refer to it we were all there when David Bentley crossed and Darren missed his header and Harry said his wife could have scored that as could mine
Yeah, but look what a career he's had. I've always enjoyed his company subsequently. I was quite pleased that I actually got a full name check where you just got very dismissive. No, Andy Gostin. Very dismissive, Gostin. Although you're so well known in football that you just need Custis. My first name. But Darren...
To be fair, we did believe you were a good striker, a very good striker, a top striker in the top five. And a good broadcaster. I enjoy listening to him. But absolutely. Even when he's slagging you off? No, no, but what I would prefer is players actually calling us out at the time. I mean, I've been called out by a few footballers at the time. And I actually quite like that because you can then sort of clear the air and move on.
Now, of course, we couldn't let the podcast go by without a mention of that Lewis Skelly red card for Arsenal over the weekend. And here's big Tony Castorino on the weekend sports breakfast having a go at VAR for not overturning it. Rice swung the ball in. It was half cleared.
And then Matt Doherty was about to break out from the edge of the penalty area and Lewis Skelly has tripped him up probably about five or six yards outside the edge of the penalty area and Michael Oliver has gone straight to his pocket and pulled the red card out. It's not for obviously a goal scoring opportunity. It's so deep inside the Wolves half. It must purely be because of dangerous play. Michael Oliver's made a mistake and that's not a problem. Hmm.
You can rectify that quite quickly through VAR. But then there's been a second mistake. So it's compounded, the first one. Because it's hard to understand if you can watch that and even if you don't really need to slow it down, you can see that Corsi has the intention to foul VAR
And it's a cynical foul. It's no more than that. And we finish with Clips of the Week on Hawksby and Jacobs, which is available right now in full as a podcast. And you can listen to it every Friday afternoon at 3.30 on TalkSport. Yours truly makes an appearance this week. I know, I know it's hard to believe that even I made a gaffe that appeared on Clips of the Week. But I'm still a long way off from having Alan Brazil's record. This was a Spurs corner to the sports bar. You
You've seen tonight that moving forward, it gives you a glimmer of hope. You mentioned the S word. You said the S word, Max. Yeah, I apologise for that. No, no. Not a sack. Not that S word. Sometimes you think you've sworn and you haven't. Staying with Spurs callers, here's one on breakfast. You know, Madison. I love Madison. Why doesn't he start them? Yeah.
Bit of an odd noise. Maybe he was going to go into a no look. Meanwhile, on the weekend overnight show with Martin Kellner, it was quiz time. Monica, give us a number from 1 to 46. 33.
33 is Boris Becker. Boris Becker. Pardon? What have I got to do? There we are. Tremendous. Why enter? You've got to guess how old he is. It's a kind of nod to the birthday spread. Well, I think Martin's been doing it longer, I reckon. Probably has been. Later in the show, Martin's producer, Cain Reeves, engaged him in a botanical chat. Mm-hmm.
We know what the most dangerous weed in the world is, don't we? The Japanese knotweed. Have you ever... Oh, goodness me. My grandparents are going through this at the moment. It is an awful plant. Where does that come from? Is it A, China? B, you get the idea, of course, the Japanese knotweed.
Let's stay in Japan now, or kind of, with boxer and Evertonian Tony Bellew on breakfast. Tony just tells us about the new stadium. They tell him it's going to be marvellous. Guys, it's just amazing. It's out of this world. It'll be the best stadium in the world when it's built. The things that are available, it's just, it's insane. I mean, you've got terrapin yaki restaurants.
Not sure I like the sound of that. I like a bit of teppanyaki, but terrapinyaki sounds like... I mean, I've never eaten terrapin. Just remind us what a terrapin is, Andy. A small semi-aquatic turtle. You are. Thank you. There we are. Um...
Well, that's it, gang. Thank you very much for listening on the TalkSport app or wherever you get your podcasts from. Make sure you have got the app downloaded tonight because we have got a huge game at the top of the championship for you on TalkSport 2 as Leeds take on Burnley. It's actually the other way round. It's at Turf Moor. Dean Ashton, the former England striker, will be alongside Joe Shannon for commentary. That's from AP.
Andy Goldstein, he'll be back with Jason Cundey on the TalkSport Daily tomorrow. And Goldstein will be back on drive from 4pm. Make sure you give us a nice five-star review on your podcast review page, please. Do everything that Jason Cundey normally tells you to do. Caress, lick, and yeah, all that weird stuff. And yeah, join us again tomorrow. This has been TalkSport Daily.
