Liverpool dominated Manchester City in a 2-0 victory, with goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. The team was first to every ball, displayed superior energy, desire, and quality, and restricted City to minimal chances. Liverpool's structure and organization forced City into sideways and backward passes, and goalkeeper Quivine Kelleher didn’t make a proper save until the last 10 minutes.
Liverpool's nine-point lead is the biggest gap they’ve had at the top of the Premier League since their title-winning 2019-20 season. It’s also the largest gap between first and second place after 13 matches since 1993-94, when Manchester United led Norwich City by 11 points. This highlights Liverpool’s strong position but also underscores the long road ahead in the season.
Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, made bold tactical decisions, such as leaving out Darwin Nunez and playing Luis Diaz as a false nine to drag City’s defenders out of position. Slot also opted for a fresh Dominik Szoboszlai over Curtis Jones, which paid off with Szoboszlai’s energy and creativity. Joe Gomez’s solid performance at center-back and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return to right-back were also key to Liverpool’s dominance.
Liverpool’s first half was marked by relentless pressure and near misses. Virgil van Dijk hit the post, Dominik Szoboszlai forced saves, and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exquisite passing set up Mohamed Salah’s assist for Cody Gakpo’s opening goal. City didn’t register a shot until the 39th minute, and Liverpool’s 10-1 shot count at halftime underscored their dominance.
Mohamed Salah made history by becoming the joint-record holder for most goal involvements (goals and assists) in a single Premier League game, equaling Wayne Rooney’s record of 36. His assist for Cody Gakpo’s goal was his 75th in the Premier League, surpassing Thierry Henry’s 74 assists for Arsenal.
Arne Slot emphasized that consistency is key to winning titles, not just beating top teams like Manchester City or Real Madrid once or twice. He acknowledged the challenges ahead, including injuries and a packed schedule, but praised Liverpool’s ability to win in their own style against top opposition.
Pep Guardiola responded to Liverpool fans’ chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” with a six-fingered salute, referencing his six Premier League titles. He later expressed surprise at the mocking but acknowledged Liverpool’s right to enjoy their victory given City’s dominance in recent years.
Luis Diaz and Dominik Szoboszlai were instrumental in Liverpool’s victory. Diaz’s energy and clever movement as a false nine disrupted City’s defense, while Szoboszlai’s freshness and creativity in midfield helped Liverpool control the game. Their combined efforts set the tone for Liverpool’s dominance, particularly in the first 20 minutes.
