Hello everyone, Gary Lineker here. I've just got a quick announcement for you. I'm sure you'll have noticed England are playing their first game under new boss Thomas Tuchel this evening. As a result, we've made a slight tweak to our normal schedule. Rather than releasing an episode in our usual Friday morning slot, we're going to do a special episode tonight at 10pm, immediately after the England vs Albania game.

It'll be a live stream of the rest is football, uh, YouTube channel. Uh, so you'll be able to watch live and join in with your thoughts and questions for us as we go. Uh, that recording will also then be released straight away as a regular podcast episode. So you'll be able to hear it in full, uh,

wherever you normally listen. But do join us on the live stream tonight if you can, as we give an immediate reaction to the game and how England are looking in the new era of Thomas Tuchel. It should be a lot of fun and a great chance for you all to get involved and have your say too.

That's 10pm tonight, pretty much straight after the final whistle on the Rest is Football YouTube channel. The link to take you directly to the live stream is in the episode description. We look forward to you joining us this evening. Before you go, though, if you're looking for something to fill your normal Friday morning slot, I want to tell you about Goalhanger's latest podcast, Journey Through Time.

Historians David Oleshuga and Sarah Churchwell are going to be telling the stories from history that you weren't taught at school. This week, they're looking at the terror attack that took place three generations before 9-11, ripped through New York, caused millions of dollars of damage, led to the establishment of new national security agencies and helped push the United States into the First World War.

It's the story of the 1916 Black Tom explosion, a major moment in American history that almost no one has heard of. Here's a little clip from it to get a taste. Manhattan Island and the surrounding territory trembled early this morning from the force of two terrific blasts. Windows were shattered and buildings shook to their foundations. The explosion shook the skyscrapers.

Clouds of dust spurted from doorways as great sheets of glass came tumbling from the skies. That's a newspaper report from the New York Tribune describing a terror attack on New York City.

An attack that cost American lives and caused millions of dollars of damage to buildings across Manhattan. It was a terror attack that shocked America. It led to the establishment of new national security agencies and it helped push the United States towards war.

But it's not the terror attack on New York City that you might be thinking of. But before we get into that story, let's introduce Journey Through Time, a new show from Goalhanger. I'm Sarah Churchwell, an author, journalist and academic.

I'm an American in the UK, and I've written books about everything from Marilyn Monroe to American fascism. And I'm David Olashoga. I'm a historian and a broadcaster. I've spent about 25 years making history documentaries. I also write history books on imperial history, the world wars, the history of cities, among other things. And in Journey Through Time, we're going to be bringing you stories from all over the world and across the centuries.

Stories that reveal what it was like to live through key events in the past, what it really felt like to be there at the time. We're going to be uncovering the hidden social histories behind famous chapters from the past, how they impacted on the lives of ordinary people. Looking at things like prohibition in the United States in the 20s and the Great Fire of London in the 17th century.

But we're also going to be uncovering forgotten events like the Great Storm of 1703, one of the worst natural disasters in British history. And we'll be meeting some of history's missing persons, these amazing characters who are just not that well known, but whose stories take us into incredible moments. So we'll be delving into events like the scandalous murder of the celebrated architect Stanford White, which was a crime that exposed the dark side of America's Gilded Age.

And we'll bring you one of my favorites, the frankly astonishing tale of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, two women who broke every convention of their age to become female pirates of the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy. And today's episode, I think, does all of that.

It is a forgotten story, that terror attack on New York City. And it involves a bizarre cast of forgotten characters. We've got Playboy diplomats. There's a stranded sailor, an opera singer who manages a brothel in New York, a useless spy who leaves top secret documents on a train. We've got bomb makers, Irish revolutionaries, and even an American president who wants to pretend that none of this is happening.

This is the first of two episodes on the Black Tom explosion, the terror attack on New York City that took place in 1916. That's three generations before the attacks of September 11th, 2001. And David, it's worth saying now that there are lots of parallels in the story we're about to tell between 9-11 and the Black Tom explosion.

That's right. And today we're going to discover why Black Tom Island was targeted, but also who the attackers were. And despite being largely forgotten, we're going to show that this was an event that really did change America. But it has been largely forgotten. This is not a well-known episode. I'm just curious, David, when did you first encounter the story of Black Tom? Well, I stumbled across it back in 2012. I was writing a book about the First World War. And

kind of did a double take when I read about it because it was mentioned in passing and I thought, how do I not know this?

And the more you read about it, the bigger that question becomes in your mind is how do we not know about this? But it is remarkable that it's been forgotten because it did have all kinds of consequences. That's right. This is an event that helped invent the notion of what Americans today call homeland security. And it has other consequences. It was to be used 20 years later to justify the internment of Japanese Americans during another war, the Second World War.

And it even, this is the most remarkable thing, it even played a role, a small role, but a significant one in the rise of Hitler and the Nazis. Yeah, I mean, I was just gonna say, when you said small, I was gonna say, it's not that minor.

It's limited, but consequential. As we will be revealing. And it's important also to say that when we say explosion, we really, really mean it. This is one of the largest detonations in history up until that time before the invention of nuclear weapons. It was a blast so powerful that it didn't just shatter the panes of glass in the skyscrapers of Manhattan. It even registered on the Richter scale, the scale we use to measure earthquakes.
