The podcast episode and thoughts below are ALL MY OPINIONS. All Elite Wrestling always hold a media scrum. A media scrum is a press conference right after a major pay-per-view where members of the media can as press-like questions. For the past 3 years that AEW has been around, every media scrum went well. This on in particular went south faster than anything before.
CM Punk started off talking about Scott Colton, also known as the wrestler Colt Cabana, who is employed by AEW. Everyone thinks that CM Punk was unprovoked and started ranting for the sake of ranting. In that rant, he mentions his feelings towards The Elite — Matt and Nick Jackson and Kenny Omega — and his feelings on Hangman Adam Page.
The only thing I DISAGREE with about Punk’s rant is how he threw Colt Cabana’s mother under the bus by REVEALING that mother and son share a bank account. I give this a lot of thoughtful points. Here are 2 main things:
The fans and the world DID NOT NEED TO KNOW THIS! That piece of information is none of our business.
If CM Punk did not mention this, I know for a FACT that someone in wrestling media will dig up dirt because they are never satisfied with answers or explanations and when they find that dirt on whatever it is they are looking for, will twist the words and post it for the world to read in the form of $5 - $13 a month. Then it’ll become a toxic truth gospel all over social media.
I talk about Dave Meltzer and how there is this sudden push to make CM Punk look like the bad guy. Sure, he’s a bad guy, a dick, an asshole, but just because he’s revealing things that no one else wants to talk about — because it needs to be talked about if AEW wants to survive — Dave is taking it hard since CM Punk called him out during the press conference. Punk also called out Alverez, too. Punk is still mad about what Alverez said on the podcast.
What provoked CM Punk was very simple. For months, a false report circulated where it accused CM Punk of having a hand in having Colt Cabana get fired. Colt Cabana wasn’t seen on AEW television for a good while, at least a year the same amount of time that CM Punk has been with the company. People speculated and put two-and-two together, and just believed that it was Punk’s fault. So, hearing all the nonsense from fans and online chirpers and that will eventually get to you. So, he set the record straight because he’s the only to have the balls to do so.
Did he do it right? No.
Huge frustrations, like the ones he held onto, needed to be talked about behind closed doors.
Everyone in the wrestling world already gave their opinion. This my opinion looking at everything with different lens. I even talk about the “fight” backstage that is getting reported by one side and then everyone else in wrestling media copies and paste. That’s the telephone game.
