January, 1776. It is mere months before the signing of the Declaration Of Independence. The Stamp Act and the American Revolution that it caused are more than a decade old. Amidst the turmoil, the fights, and years of debate, the masses remain divided between the patriots of America and the loyalists of the British Crown. A man has set upon writing for all to see what he believes to be the truth, under the working title, 'Plain Truth'. Several weeks later, he publishes a 47-page pamphlet, strong in its motivation and clear in its argument. American Independence, he argues, was merely a matter of 'when' and not a matter of 'if'. In an engaging line of thought that flows from what government means, to the idea of Monarchy being against God, and finally to a call for America becoming its own land governed by its people, he makes a strong case. This week on Sunken Treasures we talk about that pamphlet. 'Common Sense' by Thomas Paine. Music by @fyahupondrums Sunken Treasures Email: [email protected]
