1. out on a limb 处于危险境地  Ross在许下新年愿望的时候说I'm gonna go out on a limb and say no divorces in '99! Out on a limb 是一个实用的短语，在美国口语中经常出现，意思是“处于危险的境地”，“脆弱”。limb在这里并非指“肢体”，而是“树枝”（tree branches），当你on a limb（爬到树枝之上），树枝随时可能折断，处境的危险不言而喻。该短语其实属于一种比喻性表达。实际上，go out on a limb在日常用法中逐渐衍生出一种新的含义，那就是“taking chances”（冒险） 所以这里Ross的意思就是我就大胆地许下这个愿望，99年不再离婚。 Ross: Y'know what? Chandler: Do you want us to leave the room, or? 2. plummet 暴跌，笔直落下  Phoebe告诉朋友们自己的新年愿望是开飞机，于是Chandler说想坐Phoebe驾驶飞机的人新年愿望是plummet to their death.   Plummet 本意是笔直落下。Chandler 说plummet to their death 找死 stock market plummets 股市暴跌 Phoebe: Ooh! That's a good one! Mine is to pilot a commercial jet. Chandler: That's good one too, Pheebs. Now all you have to do is find a planeload of people who's resolution is to plummet** to their deaths. Phoebe: Maybe your resolution is to not make fun of your friends, especially the ones who may soon be flying you to Europe for free on their own plane. 3. gossip 传闲话  大家说Rachel的New Year Resolution应该是少些gossip，gossip 当动词用就是嚼舌头根子。托美剧Gossip Girl的福，这个词已经很普及了。想到翻译是多么的重要，Gossip Girl 如果当时没有翻译成《八卦天后》而是《长舌妇》还会不会有那么多拥趸。 Monica: Hey Rach, maybe your resolution should be to umm, gossip less. Rachel: I don't gossip! (They all laugh.) Rachel: Well, maybe sometimes I find out things or I hear something and I pass that information on y'know kinda like a public service, it doesn't mean I'm a gossip. I mean, would you call Ted Kopel a gossip? Monica: Well if Ted Kopel talked about his coworkers botched boob jobs, I would. Rachel: What? They were like this! 4. that is a quite situation 情况严重  Ross的皮裤缩水后穿不上去了，他打电话向Joey求助，Joey的回复是  That is quite a situation 情况很严重啊。 ** Joey: (answering phone) Hello? Ross: (calling from Elizabeth's bathroom) Joey, it's Ross! I need some help! Joey: Uhh, Chandler's not here. Ross: Well, you can help me! Joey: Okay. Ross: Listen, I'm in Elizabeth's bathroom… Joey: Nice! Ross: No, I-I got really hot in my leather pants so I took them off but they must have shrunk from the-the sweat or-or-or my legs expanded from the heat. Look, I-I can't put them back on. I can't! Joey: Oh. That is quite a situation. Uh, do you see any like, powder?** Ross: Powder! Yeah! Yeah, I have powder! (Grabs some of her shelf.) Joey: Good-good, okay, sprinkle some of that on your legs, it'll absorb some of the moisture and then you can get your pants back up. 5. wrap up 结束 ** Monica 说Everything is wrapped up. 意思是事情都结束了。 ** Wrap up 结束**** I would like to wrap up today’s speech with a joke. 用一个笑话结束今天的演讲。** Monica: Hey, hey, look. Look Ross, Ben drew a picture of you! (Shows him Ben's picture.) Huh? You're-you're a cowboy! Ross: Oh, be-because of the leather pants.** Monica: See? Ben doesn't think you're a loser, he thinks you're a cowboy! Now that's something. Phoebe: Yeah! Rachel: That really is something; that's really cool. Joey: Howdy partner! Ross: Maybe I should get another pair! Ooh, y'know, they-they had some with fringe all down the sides. I'm gonna go kiss Ben goodnight. I can't believe he thinks I'm a cowboy. (Pause.) I would make a good cowboy.  Monica: Okay, now that everything's wrapped up here, I think I'm, I'm gonna go do my laundry. Chandler: Oh yeah, me too. Y'know if this shirt is dirty. (Smells it.) Yep. 6. be dying to do sth 迫不及待做某事 ** 得知Rachel也发现Chandler和Monica的秘密关系，Joey兴奋极了，终于有人可以倾诉了。他说I've been dying to talk to someone. **     Be dying to do sth = can’t wait to do = be desperate to do 迫不及待做某事**** Joey: (gasps) YOU KNOW!!!! Rachel: AND YOU KNOW!!! Joey: Yeah, I know!!!! Rachel: Chandler and Monica?!! Oh, this is unbelievable!! How long have you known? Joey: Too long! Oh my God, Rach, I've been dying to talk to someone about this for so long! Listen, listen, we can't say anything about this to anybody, they're so weird about that! Listen…  Joey and Rachel: Hey! Phoebe: Hey! It's raining. I don't want to fly in the rain. So… Joey: Oh, I am going to go for a walk in the rain. Rachel: Ohhh, yeah, me too. Phoebe: That's weird. (Pause.) I bet they're doing it. **
