Shownotes Transcript

Fayette Hauser is author of the book “The Cocokettes: Acid Drag And Sexual Anarchy”. Fayette was a founding member, and her book the wildly gender-bending 1960’s San Francisco theatrical group whose existence spawned disco star Sylvester and informed everyone from John Waters to RuPaul. Fayette’s been involved in every countercultural youth movement that’s occurred in the past fifty years- her life story is wild that this is the first of two episodes. She was a beatnik teenager in Greenwich Village, a hippie free spirit in Haight- Ashbury and in the late 1970’s was an integral part of both Manhattan’s Lower East Side CBGB scene and the Los Angeles punk scene, living with legendary band The Screamers. In this episode, hostess Pleasant Gehman and Fayette chat about her Manhattan beatnik days and her free-spirit communal lifestyle in the The Cockettes House in Haight-Ashbury. where everyone studied the magic of Aleister Crowley, and each day started with a “dope run” before turning into an extravaganza of costume and prop making and wild, improvised group performances.
