Overthinking. Chronic worry. Mentally obsessing and ruminating. Contemplating worst-case scenarios. Racing heart. Sweaty palms. No, I’m not describing a character in a horror film. I’m describing something that many of us deal with on a daily basis: Anxiety.
Anxiety is directly connected to our primitive human fear response, and is actually a way our brain is just trying to take care of us and keep us safe. But that notion isn’t so reassuring when we are stressing ourselves out non-stop about what others think of us, worry we accidentally left the flat iron on, or obsessively worry we might die on our way to work.
On this week’s show, I am thrilled to dial up an expert on the subject. LaToya Newton and I met at the end of 2020 and instantly bonded over our anxiety disorders, our strict religious upbringing, and our mutual love of a good “f” bomb. I wanted to bring her on the show to discuss her journey with anxiety and depersonalization (a specific symptom of anxiety), her specific tactics to curb anxious behavior, and how she has found her own personal power through speaking publicly about her struggles.
We dig into the different anxiety treatments available from CBT therapy to cannabis and everything in-between. We also look at the stigmas around dealing with mental health that LaToya dealt with as a Black woman and how masturbation can help stave off anxiety. Yes, I said what I said. This was a super fun interview and you won’t want to miss it.
This pod explores:
LaToya’s personal story of dealing with depersonalization as a symptom of anxiety (and what that even means) Dealing with family and friends who tell you to “just pray about it” when you’re struggling with anxiety or mental health Multiple forms of therapy that can dramatically improve anxious tendencies (and we may also discuss masturbation as an anxiety relief tactic) LaToya’s personal “formula” for combatting anxiety and how you can create one for yourself
