Born Gioacchino Vincenzo Raffaele Luigi Pecci on March 2, 1810 in Carpineto Romano as the sixth of seven children of Count Ludovico Pecci and Anna Francesca Prosperi Buzzi. Pope Gregory XVI appointed 27 year old Pecci as personal prelate and he received the Sacrament of Holy Orders on December 31, 1837.

Later, Pecci became Apostolic Nuncio to Beligum in 1843. Pecci became a member of the College of Cardinals on December 19, 1853. A conclave ensued after the death of Pope Pius IX and church-state relations was a central issue. Cardinal Pecci became pope on March 2, 1878.

Pope Leo faced a tumultuous world in which Church-state relations were in question.

Pope Leo XIII died July 20, 1903 and Pope Pius X succeeded him.
