Deep Dive

Chapters
The podcast discusses the possibility of the Detroit Lions trading for Trey Hendrickson. The hosts conclude it's unlikely due to Hendrickson's high salary demands and the Lions' existing financial commitments to other players. The team's focus is on retaining their current roster and making more fiscally responsible signings.
  • Trey Hendrickson is available via trade.
  • Hendrickson's expected salary is too high for the Lions.
  • The Lions prioritize retaining their current players and making cost-effective signings.

We'd love for you to be a part of this. Watch the show as well. Oh, the YouTube comments, they're through the roof. We love that.

Oh gosh. Some of the YouTube commenters are just the best, but thanks for checking us out, being with us here on this Thursday edition of Lockdown Lions. Thank you to our everydayers that are out there that watch the pod, listen to the pod daily. We appreciate many of you. Got to give a quick shout to some friends today. You're seeing the tie for those of you watching on the YouTube channel. You're seeing the shirt and tie. It was a,

a nominee for an award at the Troy Chamber of Commerce, where I am an ambassador and big believer in the Troy Chamber. I was up for the leadership award this year. Did not win it. Congratulations to Dr. Joan, my buddy, Hockenstadt, who ended up winning it. But I got to give some love to some friends that won some awards today. Number one, I never mentioned this guy on the show.

But my good friend, Ted Efros. All right. If those of you that know Ted Efros, tell Ted that he's getting mentioned on Locked On Lions, please. Ted and my buddy Emma Hampton won the Chamber Advocate Awards or they split it. But Ted loves the Lions. He's a big sports fan. He actually loves the Tigers more than the Lions. But got to give a shout out to Ted. And every day extraordinaire. And my good friend, Michelle Choice, pregnant.

looked great today in her blue dress, got up there and won for the four Pete for the young professionals award. And we're just so happy for her because she's such a great person. Her and her husband, Josh, their daughter, Lena, they're always watching locked online. So I had to give some shout outs to all of those folks. Michelle's mom, Nancy, we come on, Nance, Nance loves the lines. So I got to give shouts to all of those folks today.

For sure. All right. News of the day. Here we go. This happens like every day. Every day we got to sit here on this show and debunk that the Lions are going to hit some home run and sign all these players and trade for all these players and then not be able to afford any of them.

Trey Hendrickson is going on the trade market. He has put out a statement today with the Bengals basically saying, I love Cincinnati. Thank you, Cincinnati, so much. But I'm honored and happy that the Bengals are letting me look for a trade. Trey Hendrickson is apparently too expensive for the Bengals. And so he has been given permission to seek a trade. What happens when this happens? Well, we know.

Miles Garrett's seeking Trey. Oh, the Lions got to get Miles Garrett. Max Crosby says he's unhappy at the end of the season last year. Oh, the Lions got to go get him. Let's go back again. Number one, could the Lions use Trey Hendrickson? Yes. Should the Lions want Trey Hendrickson? Yes. Will the Lions trade for Trey Hendrickson? No. Why?

He's getting paid about $18 million this season, and then he's a free agent. And as we told you on yesterday's program, Max Crosby just got $35.5 million a year to stay with the Raiders. Hendrickson had a monster year again this year. Led the NFL in sacks for the second consecutive year. 17.5 sacks in back-to-back seasons.

And he has had at least 13 sacks in four of the last five seasons. He's 30 years old. Yes, I'm well aware that Trey Hendrickson, when he was with the Saints, was there during the years of Dan Campbell, Aaron Glenn, who's not with the Lions anymore, but you know, Alex Anzalone, all of that. All right. Final year of his deal, like I said, not 18.5 million. I screwed that up. 15.8 million this year.

for hendrickson but he's going to want a new contract and brad holmes has said it again numerous times they got to pay aiden hutchinson so they're not going to spend 70 million dollars on two defensive ends two edge rushers they're not they're just not again i'm all for trey hendrickson i would vote for trey hendrickson i would i would uh uh you know pick him up at the airport whatever

to have him here opposite of Aiden Hutchinson. But it is not happening. The Lions have to go cheaper. This isn't baseball. See, that's the biggest thing. The NFL is king. We all love football. We're all Lions fans. We're all watching or listening to this podcast because of our love for the Detroit Lions. All right? That's just the way we are. But this league is put together a certain way so that all of these teams... By the way, I didn't turn my other light on here. Hang on. We got to do this.

Stuff's flying here. All of these teams are going to be in the same category. They're all going to have a level playing field. There's going to be a level playing field when it comes to the NFL. This is not baseball where a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers can have a three to four hundred million dollar payroll. And your Detroit Tigers or my Cleveland Guardians can be in the high 90s or 100 for payroll.

All right. So in baseball, yes. Yankees want a player. Yeah. Dodgers want a player. They can go get them. They can sign as many of these guys and spend as much as much money as possible. There's a luxury tax on all of this. Not in the NFL. You've got to be smart with where you are with the salary cap in terms of how you spend and you can't abuse it.

This isn't like the 1997, 96, 97 Red Wings that when they needed a player added to it and spent more than other teams. So while we're sitting here today going, ooh, Trey Hendrickson. Yes, of course. Of course you'd want him. And I don't know. Will Brad Holmes make a trade for a guy on a one-year deal, bring him in and go for it and pay him 16 million this year, but then go, that's it, right? ESPN had reported last week

at the combine that the Lions were pursuing Miles Garrett at the trade deadline this past year, but they're not pursuing him now.

Because they know, maybe last year they were pursuing him thinking, we'll get him for this year and the next couple of years, and then he has to go. We have to let him walk because we can't afford, we're not paying Hutchinson 35, Garrett 35, or whatever. Let's say Garrett gets 35 and Hutch gets 30. I know that Aiden Hutchinson's coming off a massive injury, and I'm well aware he might not be the same player. But they're not going to spend that kind of cash on two edge rushers.

I think that this organization believes that they've got to re-sign and re-up guys on their current roster, right? I mean, Hutchinson's going to have to get paid. Kirby Joseph's going to have to get paid. Brian Branch is going to have to get paid. Sam Laporte is going to have to get paid. Jameer Gibbs is going to have to get paid. Who am I forgetting, right? So Lee McNeil got paid.

Jack Campbell's another guy down the road. Really good football player. Made the PFF top 101, which Jared Goff got snubbed off of that list, which we will talk about coming up here on Lockdown Lions. But you catch what I'm trying to say. I think Trey Hendrickson would be awesome. He's got Dan Campbell ties. But for what he's going to want after this season, unless the Lions decided to franchise tag him, which still would be a lot of money, I don't see this happening.

I think the Lions are going to, I'm saying they're going bargain basement, but we talked about it yesterday. They're going to be signing some players that they're not going to have to spend 30 million on. They're going to be in the six, seven, eight, nine, 10 range per year, millions of dollars because of how the roster is. When you're young and you're good, you want to keep everybody. And the Lions have been great so far in retaining their own players.

Panay Sewell got a long-term deal. Amin Rasain Brown got a long-term deal. Your quarterback makes $50 million a year. Lee McNeil got paid. Taylor Decker just recently got paid. They're going to need to re-up Carlton Davis. It's their best corner. Zeitler's not going to take another one-year $6 million deal, I can tell you that. It's only so much money to go around. This is why, and I know the Bengals are a little bit of a joke, but this is why the Bengals lose players.

Some of it they're not willing to spend, like I think Sheila is, but they're very choosy with how they do it. But again, they can't bring back everybody. And they're franchise tagging T. Higgins and now letting Hendrickson at least pursue something else unless they can come up with something creative to keep him. All right. It's a Thursday. Locked on Lions right here on the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.

Coming up next, yes, a list I saw today of 101 players, the best 101 players from my friends at Pro Football Focus, PFF. Love PFF. Jared Goff is not on it. I don't get it. He was a top five finalist for the MVP, but he's not on the top 101 list in the NFL. We'll tell you who is coming up next.

Special hello as well to another everydayer who I saw today at the Troy Chamber Awards. That would be the great Daniel Zek. We love DZ. He's always listening, always checking out the pod. Dan and his business partner, Cat Toon, are legends in the Troy community. So, DZ, thanks for checking us out daily, my friend. Great to hang with you today.

All right. I saw this list and I usually when PFF comes out with stuff and this came out last week and I missed it. So my bad. But Pro Football Focus put out their top 101 players list from this past season. I think PFF will do a kind of a preview for next year.

Um, well, they'll put out another list later on and we love PFFs lists, but this one, I could not believe, uh, that I saw today. And that is the pro pro football, pro football focus. Excuse me. If I could speak top 101 players list. Now this wasn't just based on the best grades for the season.

but it was close. All right. So I'll give you an example. Their top five NFL players from PFF from this season, Lamar Jackson, Miles Garrett, Jordan, my Lada, the tackle for the Eagles, Joey Burrow and Derek Henry. Those were the top five NFL players from this past season. What I found interesting on this list was I looked up and I saw one, two, three, four,

Four, five, six, seven, eight quarterbacks made the list, including Lamar Jackson was number one. Burrow, I said, was four. Josh Allen, six. Jaden Daniels, 20. God, I can't even read my own handwriting. Isn't this horrible? Justin Herbert, 33. Patrick Mahomes, 39. Baker Mayfield, 63. And Jalen Hurts came in at number 91 on this list. Jared Goff did not make it. Did not make the list at all.

Top 101 players in the NFL. So, for example, Dominic Puny, the guard for the 49ers, made the list, made the list over Jared Goff. Julian Love, safety from the Seahawks, made the list. Zay Flowers, the Ravens, is on the list at 95.

Charles Cross, tackle Seattle, was on the list. Aiden Hutchinson, number 86 for the Lions. And there were plenty of Lions on this list. The top graded Lion on this list was, I believe, Panay Sewell. And he came in a lot lower than I thought he should be. Panay Sewell was... No, Kirby Joseph was 19. Was Kirby better than Panay? No, Kirby was 19. Just lost my spot here. Kirby was 19 and Panay Sewell was...

Hang on, maybe Kirby Joseph was the highest graded Lion. Hold on, sorry folks. Ray Sean Slater was ahead of Panay Sewell. That I did see. Sewell came in at 26. So the highest graded Detroit Lion in terms of ranking was Kirby Joseph at number 19. Again, didn't make the Pro Bowl on the first vote, but he was the 19th best player on PFF's list. Here's the bottom line on this entire topic.

Jared Goff is a top 101 player. He just is. All right. As far as the quarterbacks go, is Jared Goff better than Baker Mayfield? I believe so. Yeah, I truly believe that. Baker was 63 on this list. Plenty of these other quarterbacks are all good. I'm not going to do the buzz buzz. Jared Goff better than Justin Herbert. I'm not going to do that. But to not be on the top 101 list of pro football focus. And I know Jared Goff had a bad last game.

and finish top five in the MVP voting is ridiculous. Come on. I get it's not a sexy name. I get that Jared Goff sometimes puts up numbers that people believe are due to the offensive line, the running backs, the receivers, and this past year, Ben Johnson.

But to not have him on the top 101 list of all NFL players. And again, they base it on everything. And it's not just quarterbacks. It's not just important pieces. It's not any of that. All right. But Khalil Mack is a top 54 player. Brian Branch was on the list, et cetera. But Bucky Irving was 58. All right. Good running back for Tampa Bay. You can't tell me Bucky Irving is 58 and Jared Goff's not on the list. Goff is excellent.

And it's going to be here for a long time and led this football team at the most important position on the field to 15 wins. They're sitting in Cleveland right now with no quarterback talking about bringing Joe Flacco back. They're sitting in New York right now with the Giants with no quarterback talking about maybe dipping their toe in the Aaron Rodgers cesspool. Like, come on now. Give Jared Goff a little bit more credit. Top 101 players. I like how they do 101. Not on the list.

I think that's ridiculous. All right. I want to shift gears for a second. Another player is asking for a trade, and that is DK Metcalf, the wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks. Again, every single time, a really good football player, and DK's excellent, asks for a trade, seeks a trade. Sounds like the Seahawks are looking to deal him. The Lions always come up because the Detroit Lions are going for it. The Lions are a contender, and people want to come here.

DK Metcalf, of course, is on the last year of his deal, but is looking for $30 million a year at the wide receiver position come next season. The Seahawks want a first round pick and reportedly a third round pick, according to Diana Russini of The Athletic.

The Detroit Lions right now have Jamison Williams, and they're dealing with his fifth-year option. They've got Amon Ross St. Brown. They want to keep J-Mo around. If you heard Scotty Montgomery talk at the Combine, he was talking to Justin Rogers or Burkett, one of those two guys. Scotty Montgomery is so excited for J-Mo for next year. So excited. So you're not trading for DK Metcalf. I have Lions fans hitting me up on social media. Diesel, oh, we're trading for DK. No.

Jameson Williams is going to be making, if they pick up his fifth year option, $20 million next year or the year after next. Amin Ra is already making close to 30. DK wants 30. And you're going to give up a first and third round pick for a wide receiver? Again, Brad Holmes is either going to re-sign Tim Patrick or find someone else to be his number three. I don't see the Lions adding DK Metcalf. He's a great player.

size speed never seen a receiver built like him and i know people compare him to calvin johnson dk is just my gosh he's a tank but um are the lions gonna add him no no they're not that would not be fiscally responsible would i want the lions to grab him for this season and put him on that offense and help out johnny mo john morton the new uh offensive coordinator sure

Is it feasible? No. And Brad Holmes loves the draft. Brad Holmes loves the draft, loves the slop, eats the slop. That's a Seinfeld reference. I don't think he's trading first and a third for DK Metcalf. I don't see that happening. So, but again, I would take them, but it's not feasible. It's not when you're good like this and you've been good for two and a half years, like the lions have, you're going to have to keep your own guys. And there's too many. You're not going out and fit. That's fantasy football.

Making a trade like that. They got other issues and other places to spend their money and figure it out. And Monday, when we find out what the Lions are starting to do in free agency, when the legal tampering period is underway, names are going to be flying early. I think it's at noon, maybe. I don't see the Lions immediately jumping into some of the bigger free agents. I don't.

Maybe later in the afternoon, you know, remember they signed DJ reader. I think it was the third or fourth day of free agency last year to bring him in for a physical, make sure he was okay. And then they gave him that, uh, two year, um, what was it? 18 and a half million dollars or a $30 million deal, whatever it was.

All right, coming up next, a note about television, which I think is very, very interesting. It's something that I saw today in one of the local newspapers. We will get into that coming up next right here on Locked on Blinds. And a reminder, folks, Red Wings will play tonight down at the LCA. And don't forget, following the game, Jake Reitma will be on on Locked on Sports Detroit.

All right. So the other day I referenced an article by Carlos Menard as in the free press, which I thought was simply one of the worst articles I've ever read. I've ever read. It was in regards to the Tigers TV play by play guy before and all this stuff, whatever.

Today I read another one in the Detroit News, which was just hilarious, in regards to Johnny Cain's future. Johnny's a nice guy. But my gosh, it was like a rambling 25 paragraphs on the greatness of Johnny Cain. And in that article, I'm not even going to comment on the article, whatever. It's a guy writing about his friend. And that's kind of what journalism in Detroit has become, unfortunately.

Write about your friends. I mean, I don't and I never I'm going to keep my eyes shut. So but something in the article was intriguing, and that was that the Tigers are hiring an in-house sideline reporter slash reporter.

host to go along with uh Daniela Bruce who the Tigers are going to Tigers already employed uh for in-game stuff radio stuff they're bringing her on and they want to hire somebody else so they're not hiring they're not it doesn't sound like they're bringing back Trevor Thompson I love Trev Johnny Kane or anybody like that but in the article today it made a comment about

Fan dual sports, Detroit or whatever it's called. They change the name every five minutes and how eventually one day, maybe the Tigers are gonna have to take in the broadcast in house along with the Red Wings and the Illich's would have a network and maybe just maybe the Pistons would latch on. That's never happened. That's not happening. Can I tell you that right now? The Detroit Pistons will do their own thing before they latch on with the Illich's. It's already bad enough that the Pistons are renters and don't have their own building, but

whatever they're back in Detroit and that's what they wanted, but that's not going to happen. But here's what it has to do with the lions and why you're watching locked on lions. The NFL only plays only as 18 weeks and they only play 17 games. And eventually maybe they'll play 18, but man, what a difference these sports are and why the NFL just reigns Supreme. All right. Some of you complain and go, man, I can't watch the Thursday Amazon games. I don't have Amazon prime or whatever.

And some of you go, man, playoffs. And there was some games on Peacock or there were some games on Netflix or NFL Network, which I might not have on my cable or whatever. OK, and now everybody has streaming services and everything else. But you know where to find the games. And you know that for the most part, the Detroit Lions are going to play on Fox or CBS or NBC or for Monday Night Games, ABC and ESPN. And it amazes me that these hockey teams, basketball teams and baseball teams

It's a giant cluster on where these games are going to be coming up soon. Because for years we had Fox Sports Detroit, then it was Valley Sports Detroit, and the John Keatings of the world on the pregame, Mickey, and all these guys. We knew where to find the games. And it's going to be coming up soon where it's going to be very confusing on where you're going to find the games. For the Lions, you know, preseason games, Fox 2, right?

Regular season games, the networks I just mentioned, and the NFL has got it down to a science. Yes, they're going to make you pay for Netflix games, Amazon games, and all of that. But you're going to know where it is. You're going to know who the announcers are. The Tigers play in a few weeks. I think it's three weeks from today they open the season.

And we're sitting here reading articles in the paper about, yeah, well, we're not sure the host is yet for the studio show. And we're not sure that the West Coast games are even going to be, they're even going to have studio shows. Do you imagine if the NFL goes, yeah, we're just not going to, there's some weeks we're not going to do studio show. What? No.

NFL, it just goes to show, and I know the NFL network had some budget cuts and Andrew Siciliano, our good friend here on the pod was let go for, for budget reasons, NFL network and everything else. But it is just incredible me to me, how good the NFL TV deal is. And to be honest, the NBA national deals is going to be pretty good next year with Amazon and NBC and all that. Unfortunately, TNT and Barkley and those guys are gonna be gone, but

My point is that this stuff never happens in the NFL. They always have it down. Roger Goodell could get booed at the draft and people could think this and think that. And there's too many games being shipped overseas and all that. Bottom line is when it comes to following your teams and where you find content and the games, you know where to go. Then there's no questions about it. And these other teams in town, and I, you know,

I'm a Pistons fan. You guys know my work with the Pistons. I'm loving what they're doing this year, but not knowing that maybe next year you're not going to know where to find the games and maybe you're going to have to buy a streaming service for the Pistons network that they may have to do in-house. It's crazy how the times have changed there.
