I've often found myself unable to associate certain names with their short form. For example, when I heard the name Bob in English, I didn't know that it was Robert or that Chuck was Charles. Here in Switzerland there are also such abbreviations, depending on the dialect. In the Bernese dialect, many names end in '-u': Tinu for Martin, Winu for Erwin or, quite differently, Aschi for Ernst. Without this knowledge, people assume that there are two different people and do not realise that they are one and the same person. This also applies to negative behaviour in everyday life. Some things may be given a kind of official name that sounds so distant and abstract that you get the impression that it doesn't affect you, whereas such misbehaviour is clearly named in everyday language. Therefore, changing the name does not change the content and does not make it better or less bad.
